9 20 th & 22 nd October 2018 Field Day Report Cervantes Conditions: Starting Fine, Very Slight SW Breeze, flat seas, and little weed, building to rough and weedy conditions. Three Beachcombers (Mark Hansen, Ron Thomas and Mark Nurse), showed up for the sign on at the beach car park on a balmy Saturday morning, with Bruce Davies already camping at Black Rock ready to start the event. The two Mark s headed south to join Bruce through the scratchy scrub and up the awkward sand moguls, and arriving just before noon, while Ron head to just south of the car-park. Looking north along Black Rock platform to Bruce & Mark N fishing the beach On arriving they found Bruce comfortably set up with Bacchus, and all set to start the event at 12:00, and the reef was completely covered in sand with only a small part of the edge of the reef showing. starting to come in Mark s tent tucked in behind the rock making conditions a little more difficult, but still quite manageable, and the expectation for the arrival some Tailor was still quite high. Bruce s Whiting During the drive down from the car park the wind had increased from the South West, and the ocean was no longer flat and calm as it was earlier in the day. The tide was still quite high covering the edge of the reef, and the sea looked fishy but there was nothing for the first few hours. Late in the afternoon all members started to catch the odd Tarwhine, Herring, a small Flatheads, and Whiting. As the afternoon moved into the evening the wind had increased and some weed was As the evening came on Mark Nurse had a couple of good hits and bite offs, and then thought he had a good one on, but lo and behold it was it was just a troublesome NW One of Bruce s Tarwhines 9

10 Blowy, which may have account for the bite offs he had had earlier. Mark N was the first to get a few reasonable sized Tailor, with Bruce landing a couple of good size Tarwhine (27cm and 35cm). Mark Hansen left early in the evening with just the one tiny Tailor to show for his effort as he had another commitment the next day. Before leaving Mark H had a call from Ron, who had landed a 53cm Skippy, and a couple of NW Blowies, and Herring, and he too was about to leave for home. While Mark N landed a few reasonable Tailor early in the evening the rest of the night wasn t too brilliant and both he and Bruce had a relatively early night. They both awoke around 4:30am with the hope of better things only to find the wind was a bit stronger and the weed had moved in to make the fishing pretty hard. One of Mark N s NW Blowfish being carefully unhooked It wasn t too long before Mark had a good run of Tailor along with his share of weed, while Bruce not far from him just landing weed, and didn t get a bite to his frustration. Both Bruce and Mark packed up pretty early because of their battles with the weed, and called it a day with Mark Nurse being the clear winner for the weekend. Well done, Mark. The Four members caught 20 fish made up of seven species: Flathead, Herring, Tailor, Skippy, Whiting, NW Blowies, and Tarwhine totalling 9.56 metres. Mark Nurse s NW Blowie of 67cm was the longest fish, and his bag of 14 fish was the longest at 4.97 metres, and included the most species. 13 DRYCASTING BEACHCOMBERS 4 th November 2018 I find it very difficult to write a story when there is nothing to write about, and that is what is happening with dry casting, which is very unfortunate because it is a very enjoyable day out, and members and visitors that do attend, usually have a good time. I could tell you who won the day, and who got the longest cast and who won the DHA but you can read that anyway. Congratulations to Mark for the highest score in the SHA event. While I am writing this report?, which may be a little controversial, I would like to thank 2 or 3 members who do attend dry casting and the main one is Mark Hansen. Without Mark I feel that my job as DCO is almost a waste of time but I will keep on going for as long as I can or for as long as these members attend. DCO Ron Thomas Part of being in a club is being part of a club. There are always some members in any club who will go out of their way to provide their time, their knowledge and their friendship to any who choose to take it up. This is why it is always so disappointing when nobody takes advantage of what is offered. But on the other hand most are quick to complain when the service isn t offered. Do your part of being in a club and join in as often as possible, otherwise it might not always be there. Jennie 13

16 Chas, Morris, Ron & myself were the only volunteers which made it a long HOT day!! Chas was on site at 0500 hrs and left at approx hrs, I was there at 0630 hrs, left 1500 hrs and Morris came in about 1000 hrs and Ron a bit later both guys left in the afternoon sometime. A lot of interest from the crowd with a possible three or four persons who might be really interested? Time will tell. Chas did an excellent presentation on lure making, rigs a well-presented Table of Fishing gear, a display of rod stands and so on! I had a table of literature, an Alvey and Sea Martin reels on the rods display rack. Banners were flown too. We were next to Fishability's Unit! I obtained bottled water and cool drinks from the Beachcombers stash, they came in handed being a hot day for the helpers! Morris bought all of us an ice-cream, thanks Morris! Other than the above we met a lot of people of all ages, male & female! Thanks, Guys for your assistance today! Cheers John 16

18 My Thoughts. I don t know about you, but for me the silly season is starting already! It seems that there is some place to be or something to do nearly every day and evening. Work is starting to get busy with parents realizing that it is almost the end of the school year already! Kaitlin has her final Police Rangers graduation this Tuesday and then her Year 12 Graduation next Tuesday. Hard to believe that tiny baby that I gave birth to has grown up so much! As long as she doesn t stop being as crazy as she is all will be good! Now the challenge to find a job so that she can enjoy earning her own money. Next month will be the Club s Christmas meeting, so I am hoping that all members can come along and join in for the evening. Save the date.wednesday 19 th December 2018, 7.30pm. Take care, there are some crazy drivers on those roads out there! Jennie 18
