7 Venue: Freshwater Harvey / Waroona October 2016 Field Day Details Boundaries: Any freshwater body south of the Swan River open to the public for fishing. Dates: 22 nd & 23 rd October 2016 Field Day Fees: $10 per family, $5 per single Sign on: 11.00am Saturday 22 nd October at the Pinjarra Bakery in Waroona Lines Down: 12.00pm [noon] Saturday 22 nd October Sign Off: 12.00pm [noon] Sunday 23 rd October at the Pinjarra Bakery in Waroona Our default UHF radio channel is 10 Please contact the FDO before 8.00pm Thursday evening [20 th October] if you want to attend this Field day. 8 September 3 rd & 4 th 2016 Field Day Report Swan River Brian s tailor Saturday morning, at the appointed time, under the Narrows Bridge, Mark waited for members to sign on, Brian and Morris rang through their participating in the competition and indicated that they were going to fish from a boat with Peet W. Peter rang saying he would start later as he had things to do on his truck, Morris s winning Tailor Bruce was the only one who showed up at the sign on to collect his form and say that he was going to try his foldable boat at the lower reaches of the river. In Melville water and west Morris, Brain and Peet slowly trawled ganged mulies in the hunt for tailor. They cover a lot of ground before finding a pay-dirt patch late in the afternoon that provided them with tailor at every pass. Here Brian landed four tailor averaging 34cm and Morris caught seven including a nice 39cm specimen. Bruce had also put in his boat and tried freshwater bay, Blackwall Reach, Claremont waters amongst many other places but couldn t get a bite, and so had no fish in the comp. Mark went home to prepare for the evening fishing, Peter called around in the late afternoon and they set off together, briefly stopping at the Applecross Dominoes Pizza Place for a couple Pete s big blowie of pizzas and a garlic bread. After the welcome feed they headed west to just east of the old traffic bridge where they fished for a few hours catching only a little blowie each. Around 10.00pm the next stop was the E shed wharf where there were other fishermen not catching anything so we d try our luck, Mark landed a huge 10cm gobbleguts after 90 minutes of pickers. By midnight stumps was called and we headed home to warm beds. Sunday morning Mark arrives at the Keane street jetty in freshwater bay around 6.30am try for a flathead or two but the water was murky and cold and the fish weren t hungry so after a couple of hours went home. The signoff was at the Garret Rd Bridge BBQ area where the Hansens and the Stoeckels [with hounds Gypsy & Dougie] gathered for a social BBQ along with at least half the population of Bassendean celebrating Father s Day. As for the 5 people in the competition four caught 14 fish comprising 3 species: Tailor, Gobbleguts and Blowfish totalling 4.13metres. Morris caught the longest fish, a tailor at 39cm and also the longest bag of tailor at 2.38 metres. Maybe the next Swan River field day we ll wait for warmer weather/water to increase are chances of better bags. Our next FD is the freshwater competition based around Harvey/Waroona away from the saltwater, sand and seagulls, but amongst the tranquil dams, gumtrees and Kookaburras. 10 AAAWA State Dry Casting Competition This event will be held on Sunday 30 th October 2016 at Kings Meadow in Guildford. The event starts at 8.30am sharp. Please contact Peter Stoeckel on for more details. The Beachcomber s will be holding a sausage sizzle at this event so if you would like to volunteer your help for this, or to help with scoring the event, your offer will be more than welcome! 10

11 The Western Australian Branch of the ASF will be holding a special Casting weekend over the 12 th & 13th November This event will be held at our NEW casting field located off Taranto Road, near the Binningup desalination plant. Anyone wishing to attend merely needs to travel south on the Forrest Highway until they reach the Gull servo just south of the Myalup turnoff, then travel west on Taranto Road about 800 metres and follow the direction signs to the right. Saturday 12 th November will be a coaching and training day under the auspices of Jeremy Schrader from Melbourne. For those who don t know Jeremy, he would be, in my humble opinion, the foremost and best casting coach in Australia. If anyone would like to stay the two days, then camping is permitted on the property and a very satisfying camp can be erected beneath the Peppermint trees surrounding the area. If after casting you would like to fish, then simply travelling down Taranto Road to the west puts you on the beach between Binningup and Myalup. It would take longer to let down your tyres than it would to travel the distance to the beach from the casting field Nominations need to be in before competition starts on Sunday 13 th November. You can bring your own fishing gear if you like, however there are rules requiring certain line diameters for safety aspects. All line to be used is monofilament and will be available at the location. NO extra cost. The ASF organisers will have the required line and leader available for each and every weight cast. Weights used are: 50, 75, 100, 125, 150, 175 & 200 grams. A small cost will be incurred to cover all matters. $40 includes casting nomination/insurance, line, markers, weights used and ASF Membership to ensure everything is within the rules. ASF financial members will only need their standard $10 casting fee. All casting will be under the auspices of the ASF Rules for casting and safety is paramount. Any inquiries can be directed to Cha s Riegert on: mob or riegert@iinet.net.au From the casting field to the Gull servo is about 2 kilometres, and all food, drinks and ablutions will be at that facility unless you bring your own. 11

13 Bowline Knot Tying The Bowline is identical in structure to the Sheet Bend - in both knots a bight locks into a loop. However, in the Bowline the tying is carried out using the bight whereas in the Sheet Bend it is usual to use the loop. The bunny goes up the hole around the tree and bank down the hole. Tighten the knot by pulling on the tree and both bunny trails at the same time. Uses Use the bowline anytime you wish to have a loop that will not slip. This knot is commonly used in rescue situations. No matter what load you put on the knot and line you can easily undo the knot 13

15 Mango & Coconut Chicken Skewers Equipment: You'll need 8 pre-soaked bamboo skewers. Ingredients: 800g chicken thigh fillets, trimmed, cut into 3cm pieces 1/2 cup mango chutney 1 tablespoon crunchy peanut butter 1 tablespoon soy sauce 270ml can light coconut cream 100g Asian salad leaf mix 3 radishes, thinly sliced 1 Lebanese cucumber, peeled, thinly sliced 2 teaspoons Asian salad dressing Step 1: Thread chicken evenly onto 8 skewers. Combine chutney, peanut butter and soy sauce in a bowl. Transfer 2 tablespoons mixture to a small bowl. Brush mixture over chicken skewers. Reserve remaining mixture. Step 2: Heat a well-oiled barbecue or chargrill pan over medium heat. Cook skewers, in batches, for 3 to 4 minutes each side or until browned and cooked through. Step 3: Meanwhile, place coconut cream and reserved mango chutney mixture in a small saucepan over medium heat. Cook, stirring, for 6 to 8 minutes or until reduced by half and mixture has thickened slightly. Step 4: Place salad mix, radish, cucumber and dressing in a bowl. Toss to combine. Place skewers on a platter. Drizzle with a little coconut mixture. Serve with salad and remaining coconut mixture. BBQ Rainbow Trout 1kg rainbow trout fillets 65g butter, melted 2 tablespoons lemon juice 1/4 teaspoon paprika 1 pinch cayenne pepper 1/4 cup barbecue sauce Preheat a barbecue for medium heat and lightly oil the grate. 2.Arrange the trout fillets on a large piece of aluminium foil. Whisk together the butter, lemon juice, paprika and cayenne pepper. Brush the mixture onto the fillets. 3.Cook on the preheated barbecue until the fish flakes easily with a fork; about 10 minutes. 4.Brush the fillets with the barbecue sauce; cook another 2 minutes. 15

16 My Thoughts. My favorite time of year Halloween!!!! Did you guess??? Unfortunately, we don t have time for a party this year maybe next time. Lots of changes for us recently. Peter has had a change of employer and will now be driving a truck up North of WA for his job. It will be strange to have him away so often, but work is work. Lucky I have a dog, two cats and a budgie to keep me company! Oh yeah..and a Kaitlin! It will mean quite a few changes for as far as the fishing club goes as well because Pete won t know when he will be home or not for both Field Days and Dry Casting.
