7 January [22&23] 2011 Field Day Report OPEN The boundaries for an Open Field Day are anywhere in WA where you are legally entitled to fish. As the car was already packed, it was just after tea on Friday evening when Mark and Wendy decided to go to their choice of field day venue, namely Cervantes, for the first Open in the new competition year. We left at 8.00pm and arrived at Black Rock just on 10.15pm expecting to see heaps of suicidal roos during the twilight drive up the Indian Ocean Drive but thankfully only seeing 2 and an emu on the track in. The cruiser was parked up above the high watermark and the rooftop camper made ready for a restful night s sleep listening to the soothing lullaby of the waves gently lapping the shore. The next morning we were up early, moved the vehicle into a better position for any other Beachcombers wanting to fish there, set up the awning, deployed all the usual camping gear so that breakfast could be got under way and finally after brekkie the fishing tackle broken out and organised ready for lines down at noon. Peter and Charles arrived late morning and were soon set up for the start. The promising conditions of an overcast sky and gentle SE wind were soon nullified by the sea breeze and copious quantities of weed in the water, which Peter was expertly landing like the true greenfingered champion that he is. All through the afternoon and into the evening we took turns in fishing with varying degrees of success: Mark and Wendy zip, Peter a whiting and Charles with a few herring and a tailor which he donated as the maincourse for Sunday s breakfast; the fish were scaled, filleted with the skin left on and the soaked in a mixture of seawater and honey for an hour. Next morning the fillets were hot smoked over Teak sawdust for twenty minutes then eagerly devoured by the hungry campers. With breakfast over it was back to fishing with a few gardies, 7
8 whiting, herring and a dart being added to the tally. Around 10.30am the sea breeze made conditions uncomfortable so we decided to call it quits and packed up with our well-practiced efficiency and drove into Cervantes for a pastry lunch. As we had a bit of time up our sleeves, some sight seeing was in order, one interesting spot just south of the town is a hyper saline lake called Lake Thetis which has its own ancient colonies of stromatolites and thrombatolites [living rocks] as well as the odd reptile of the racehorse variety. After looking at a couple of other points along the coast we made our way home driving through the sandstorms generated by the extra strong sea breeze. Meanwhile, at 8.00am on Saturday, some of the other more nautically inclined members [Greg, Chas and Morris] had taken to the sea in Greg s boat, casting off from Ocean Reef Mariner, the 5 km trip out was a little choppy and the risk of blowing chunks was quite high but the green-gilled Beachcombers [you know who you are] managed to contain themselves. The trio started fishing for pleasure/practice before the start of the competition. Morris caught a sting ray which was pulled up the side of the boat and a bit of a struggle ensued in which Greg copped a stingray barb a couple of inches into his thigh. Fearing the worst, Ocean Reef Sea Rescue was contacted for information on the toxicity or otherwise of stingray venom. Upon discovering that that species of ray was non-venomous, the boys put away their thoughts of a mercy dash back to the nearest hospital or even worse the 8
9 traditional burial at sea and went back to fishing in the competition catching a good mixture including flathead, gardies, leather-jacket, rock-cod, skippy, trumpeters, wrasse and western blackfish. The lads returned to shore around 5.30pm and didn t go out again the next day. Chas won the longest total length at 5.21metres also the most points [1390] and species [7] measured; Charles measured the longest scale fish a tailor at 44 centimetres. Our next field Day is from the Yanchep Lagoon to Seabird, which is nice and close and hopefully full of tailor and mulloway. 11 ASF Dry Casting Chas Riegert has advised that the ASF State Championship Dry Casting will be held at Kings Meadow in Guildford on Sunday 27 th February The first cast is at 8:00am. ALL weights and line classes will be available at the ground, including leaders for those needing them. Casters need only bring their rod and empty reel. Jeremy Schrader from Melbourne and MAYBE a couple of others will be attending this event. A Century Red is up for first place and Chas is still seeking a suitable prize for the aggregate champion. This sounds like a great day and we look forward to seeing many of you there!! A mother and a baby sardine were swimming in the North Sea when suddenly the baby sardine saw a submarine go by and asked its mother what it was. The mother sardine said "It's all right dear, it's just a tin full of people!" 11
12 My thoughts... Another month has flown by and we are nearly half way through the second! This is an exciting month for the Beachcombers we have a website! Thank you to Phil Brayne for a great start on this. It looks fantastic and I am sure that we are all looking forward to seeing the finished result. As you have noticed, the meeting day has been changed to Thursday evenings instead of Wednesday. This is due to Kaitlin s gymnastic training so thank you to all for accommodating the Stoeckel taxi service! The February Field Day sounds like fun several of us have booked into Club Capricorn. While the men are out fishing, the rest of us will have to laze around the swimming pool sipping on a glass or two (?) of wine. Oh dear, someone has to do the hard work!!! I will be doing some more work on the title page before the next issue of Shorelines. This was just a quick job and definitely needs touching up. Thank you to Mark Hansen for the design much more artistic than myself! We look forward to seeing you at the next meeting and then the Field Day. For those who celebrate it Happy Valentine s Day!!! Take care, and look for the magic in every day. You only have to open your mind to see it. Jennie 12
