3 Tracer Overnight July 21 John Nutt This has to be one of the most wildest one-day trips on record for the club. We started out from the landing around 9:00PM picking up some nice sardines and into the moonlit night we went. Captain Tommy Scherl had asked us if we wanted to go after a morning bite of Albacore and if that didn t work out, head in for paddy hopping or just run down the beach and get right to the paddies. We chose the first and went south about 90 miles. After dropping some trolling lines, we started the hunt. We had a couple of jig strikes but just couldn t pull more than a couple of fish out of each strike. None were Albacore, just Dorado and Yellow Tail. So we headed in shore to find some loaded paddies. Again, it was a couple here and there, not a lot. Then we came up on a paddy that Tommy said, Get your 40# out!. These fish were not shy, and had lots of fight in them. Dorado, Yellow tail, and some Yellow Fin all came over the rail. We drifted on this continuous bite for what seemed like hours but we were actually dragging the fish with us. As we drifted along and the fishing started to slow we found ourselves drifting right into another loaded paddy. Bam, the Yellow tail started chewing and then some drags started really screaming. Yellow Fin! Some very active Yellow Fin, so for what seamed like another hour or so, we put the hurt on these and their other fish friends. After that Tommy said, Lets get trolling. After some time, he slammed on the brakes and said, Blue Fin!. He wasn t kidding, these fish hit the boat and then were gone. We did get a few. You had to be ready when these fish hit because they hit really hard. When we headed towards the barn, there were eighteen Dorado, sixty Yellow Tail, nine Yellow Fin, four Blue Fin, and one lone Albacore. That is one heck of a mixed bag of fish for an overnight trip. As far as the points: Marty Barden with a 33# Albacore won ten first place points. Again, Marty Barden picked up eight second place points with a 32# Blue Fin. Jack Nocera had a 29# Blue Fin that earned him six points. For the money: Shannon Nutt s 38# Blue Fin had first place money, Marty Barden pick up both second and third place cash with his Albacore and Blue Fin, respectively. This trip could have been a grand slam if we could have located on of those Big Eyes. Saltwater Gazette 3

5 Tracer two day August 2 John Nutt This trip has traditionally been a record setter for Albacore with easy limits and other mixed fish. This trip started out slow and we ran 100+ miles south and into some warm, beautiful, flat, blue seas. We trolled around in the morning, and then we started the usual scratch fishing of Dorado and Yellow Tail of small size. As we started getting further south, the fish just kept getting bigger. We found some great paddies that really tested our ability to fish as a group. The first day finished with a healthy load of Dorado, Yellow Tail, and a couple of Yellow Fin. The next morning again started slow with trolling rotations, testing everyone s stamina. The Tracer was pointed in a northernly direction the entire morning as we worked our way home on some flat calm water. As we started approaching the time to head home we ran up on one huge paddy that was brimming with Dorado and Yellow Tail. So we of course, had to stop to see if they were hungry. Guess what, they were! and we proceeded to fill our two day limits of Yellow Tail and put some hurt on a bunch of nice quality Dorado. At the end of the trip, Max Hinmon won the first day jackpot with a 24# Yellow Tail, while John Nutt found ten club points with a 23# Yellow Tail. On the second day, Jim Joseph picked up the jackpot with a 23# Yellow Tail and again, John Nutt found another ten club points with a 22# Yellow Tail. We ve brought back more tonnage with Albacore, but this trip easily found the same number of fish come over the rail as our past August two-day trips. Totals for two days were 43 Dorado, 140 Yellow Tail, and 19 Yellow Fin. Thanks to Tommy and the crew of the Tracer for going the extra mile to make sure our trip went off. At the end of this trip, High Desert Saltwater Anglers had only one Albacore caught this year. Hopefully the upcoming trips find some more, otherwise there will be lots of empty cans this year. 7 Steve Thompson new cottage John Nutt I have received several updates from Steve Thompson (formally the Tracer s Captain) and though I would pass it along as many of you have asked me if I ve heard anything. I ve dropped in the text and added the pictures below. Hi Everyone, Here are a few pictures of our house construction. From what I hear from Steve there's been quite a bit of progress since these were taken. They're framing the first floor foundation (14 feet up off the ground) and hopefully if the weather cooperates it will be poured beginning of next week. Last night was the first time we haven't had any rain in at least a week. They have quite the thunderstorms & light shows down here. I haven't been to the house site in a while due to the difficulty getting there with all the very large puddles in the roads, more like flooded roads, and I guess it's quite swampy around our house from all of the construction (they told me not to build a castle in the swamp, but I did it anyways!). Hope everyone is doing well, more later... Pam Hi Everyone, Thought you'd all like to know that our first floor foundation was finally poured on Monday. Guess it took about 10 hours so they were still working after dark. I didn't make it down to the site but guess it was pretty interesting since they only had a 1 sack mixer, then they dumped it onto a sheet of plywood, then with a lot of workers lined up they would pass the cement up in 5 gal. buckets 14 feet up! They have started laying the first course of block and Steve will probably start putting in the junction boxes and pulling wire in a day or so. Still having rain off and on all the time and it's been really humid. Having a few problems adjusting to the weather here but everyone tells me that your first year is the worst - hope they're right! Oh, I guess I better not forget to mention the sand flies (fleas), they're driving us crazy too! First it was the blister bug season, then the mosquitoes (which we still have some) and now it's the sand fly and regular fly season. Beginning to wonder if there's a non bug season! Other than house stuff, not much else is new so I'll send more info as it comes. 10 Recipes of the Month Pan Roasted Dorado 3 Tomatoes, medium diced 8 Ounces white beans ½ Bunch scallions, thinly sliced 1 Bay leaf 2 Red onions small diced 1 White onion, cut into large diced 1/3 Cup olive oil, plus 1/3 cup 4 Garlic cloves, sliced 4 Tablespoons aged Sherry vinegar 2 Tablespoons dry oregano Salt and freshly ground black pepper 12 (3-ounce) Dorado fillets, skin off 1 Teaspoon ground Cumin, plus 1 tablespoon 1 Serrano chile, very finely diced Olive oil for cooking In a mixing bowl, combine tomatoes, scallions, red onions, 1 teaspoon cumin, 1/3 cup olive oil, sherry vinegar, and Serrano. Season with salt and pepper, to taste. Set aside for 2 hours. In a large stock pot place white beans and cover with 3 times the amount of water. Add bay leaf. Boil until beans are tender at least 1 hour. Strain beans. In a medium sauté pan, sauté onions and garlic with 1/3 cup olive oil until translucent. Add oregano and 1 tablespoon cumin until aromatic In a food processor, puree beans and onion mixture. Season with salt and pepper. Set aside. Season the dorado with salt and pepper. In a medium size sauté pan, heat a little olive oil and cook the dorado for 3 to 4 minutes on each side or until done. To serve, place puree in large serving platter. Set fish on top of puree and top with tomato relish. Saltwater Gazette 10
