~~~~Bluewater Bulletin~~~~ September, 2012 San Diego Rod and Reel Club Meeting: Sept 6th, 12 Happy Hour 6:00 7:00 Meeting at the Bali Hai Mike Gardener President Rhonda Ito Hello FCM s Well we just arrived home from a six day trip to La Paz. Mike and I jumped on the paddy with Dave & Lori Sachau, Dave s brother Brian, and Lee & Cheri Fleming. We flew out of Tijuana, which really was a pleasant experience. We booked our trip with Jonathan & Jilly Roldan, the owners of Tail-hunters International. Everything that was promised was delivered. We arrived in La Paz and were immediately taken care of by Jonathan s team. We arrived at FUBAR/Tail-hunters International headquarters and finally met Jonathan and Jilly. What a wonderful couple. The view from their restaurant/headquarters was amazing. We had a couple of meals with them and everything was over the top! We all stayed at La Concha resorts. Again, everyone was helpful and attentive and the food was delicious! On the first day of fishing, we went out of Los Arenas. Mike and I slammed the Tuna while Lee and Cheri limited out on Dorado. Mike caught a 40lb tuna and Cheri landed a 40lb Dorado on the very first day. The next 3 days of fishing was mainly Dorado, but we also caught several other species. Personally, by the time the 3 rd day of fishing came around, I passed. These guys fish hard and long. After day two, I had logged in 18 hours of fishing. And here I thought I was going on vacation! I know our entire group would highly recommend Jonathan and Jilly in a heartbeat. We had awesome fishing, coming home with 4 coolers packed to the top. That's my fishing story, now what's yours? See you at the next meeting I look forward to hearing lots of stories! Rhonda Vice President Lou Douchene Hello FCM's Each year the club supports Catherine Miller and her I.G.F.A. kid's fishing derby on the Shelter Island Pier. We do the rod rigging, by getting about 125 rods rigged with weights and hooks, and control the handing out and getting the equipment back. While the event is going on, we undo birds nests, re-rig and help them fish. The weather was great, caught a lot of fish, and had great fish taco's by Tommy Gomes and his crew. Just a wonderful event and every kid walked away with a prize. We had very little support from our members in helping for this event. There was Tom Gruber, Ellie Duchene, and Curt Itogawa. Curt's wife Laura and daughter Sara were moving that day, but took a couple of hours to help in the morning. Plus I was there helping as well. We need more support from YOU, the members of our club. If you've never helped before, it is a Very Rewarding experience. 1
Just imagine when you were a kid wanting to learn how to fish. These are your opportunities to fulfill that same dream of another child. So, make some time to sign up and help at these events it really is a good time. Our biggest event of the year has come and gone, what a wonderful Tournament we had, and a great time was had by all. The seminar was excellent, great speaker (Capt. Ron Baker), as always Pepe and his crew served the best fish taco's in all of California and Baja, and a huge raffle with great fishing gear from generous donors. Everybody had a great time and the raffle winners were spread out across the board. This year the tournament was different the fish showed up! It's always good to have fish show up for our tournament. A lot of fish were weighed in, and there were very happy winners in all categories, taking home great prizes. The Big Fish Awards banquet was wonderful, with great Bali Hai food and drinks, excellent women's raffle and silent auction, and of course, the big spread on the main raffle table. All the items on all the tables were of top quality, and if you were lucky enough to get any of the item's, you got quality merchandise. We had a great turn out, with great participation, and a good time was had by. Congratulations to all the winners. There was many hours of hard work, meetings and door banging to put this tournament on. You can't imagine the work that goes into putting on this event. A great big thank you goes out to all who helped to put this tournament on to support our kid's fishing program and the Friends of Rollo kid's fishing program. KUDO's and THANK YOU for your support. At the September meeting I will be doing the raffle one more time. It will be much like the seminar raffle, with all quality gear, on a smaller scale, yet still LARGE. At the September meeting we will also have a special raffle where we will be raffling off Shimano's two top-of-the-line products. A Talica 12, lever drag, two speed reel and a matching Terez rod. This combo is valued at almost $900.00! Great top of the line equipment, a must have combo. We will ONLY be selling 100 tickets at $10.00 each, what great odds of winning this fantastic rod and reel combo. See you at the meeting, and thank you for your support. Lou Tournament Master: Lee Fleming Ahoy! Our next club tourney will be September 22, Weigh-in will be hours (6:30-7:30 pm) at the Wave on Shelter Island. The format will be Yellowtail and Dorado. The 3 heaviest fish wins 1st, 2nd, and 3rd place as usual and points awarded accordingly. The side-pot fish will be tuna (skipjack, albacore, yft, and bft). What, albacore? They've been showing up in the counts as of late! Entry in the side pot $10 per angler. If one is in on the boat, then all must be in on the side pot. A secondary optional jackpot will be opened as well. It will be $25 per boat for the heaviest combined weight of yellowtail/dorado. See me at the 9/6/12 meeting for sign-up and all the details. Lori B Sachau will not have her annual Fish-On tournament on 9/22, but she will have the Chuck Bryon Fish-on Kids Art Banquet on 9/23/12. This will be at the beautiful Bali Hai 2
Restaurant. She may have some father/son combos that may want to fish our tournament. If there is any space on board your boat, please let us know. Rex Finney Lee Fleming Jawbreaker vhf-16,68,72 Rex Finney continues: I hope that you all have had an opportunity to get into the offshore fishing lately. I went out on the Pride and we had limits of Blue Fin Tuna amongst 14 anglers. I had at least three over 30 pounds each. One of them ran me around the boat three times. I don t think that there is a fish out there that pulls harder than a Blue Fin. As Doc informed you, our next tournament will be for Yellowtail and Dorado on September 22 nd. You weigh your heaviest fish of either species. There will be a $10 per angler tuna jackpot and a secondary jackpot at $25 per boat for the heaviest combined weight of yellowtail and dorado (caught on the boat.) The weigh-in will be from 6:30 to 7:30 pm at the Wave on Shelter Island. Note that the Big Fish tournament does not count for sport points, so please refer to the Bulletin for last month's current sports point totals. Go to the member s page of SanDiegoRodandReel.com for current sports point standings. Clothing Master Lori Byron We have all sizes and colors, and many styles to choose from: T-shirts, sweatshirts, hoodies, and more. Both men s and lady s styles. So come and check it out. I know we have many new members that may need to get their club shirts. We can custom embroider your name and/or your boat name on any of our clothing. I look forward to seeing you at The Table at the next meeting. Lori Byron - Sachau CHUCK BYRON YOUTH ART, INC. Chuck Byron Products Membership Daryl White Hello everyone, it was great seeing you all at the Big Fish seminar meeting. We had a great meeting with over 90 members and guests in attendance. We didn t do the badge raffle for the August meeting so that it would not interfere with the Big Fish activities. We will pick it back up during the next meeting, so remember your badge. We ve had some nice prizes in the badge raffle lately. Wearing your badge helps our new members and guests to know who you are, and then you get in the raffle for free. During the Big Fish seminar we had some new members join the San Diego Rod and Reel Club. Please join me in welcoming Mitch Aronson, and Michael & Margie Williams to the club. Be sure to introduce yourselves at the next meeting and say hi when you see them on the water. With these new members, and a number of members who recently renewed, our membership list is now up to 130 active members. We will continue to do new and innovating things to draw members to the club. 3
Well we have been waiting for this for the last two seasons, great fishing in local waters. If you haven t been out, now is the time to put the boat in the water, pull out of the dock or find a fellow club member to hop a ride with to get out there and catch some fish! I m hoping to hear many members come up during the September meeting to share stories of their great fishing trips at the local banks. Remember, if you need a crew or a boat to ride on, check out the Yearbook and head out with a fellow Rod and Reel club member. If you have other fishing friends that you go out with, bring them to the meeting and get in on the 10 free raffle tickets for bringing a guest. Well, that's it for this month. Let me know if there is any other information that you would like for me to put together and I ll get it going. See you on the water and keep them hooked up. Daryl White, daryl@sandiegorodandreel.com The Four D s, MMSI: Picture of the Month Gary takes sister-in-law Sandy to the 43 for her 1st Pelagic. An Epic day of Dorado s on one Paddy. Friend Jeff on board w/ 12 year old son Derek, who had his 1 st Dorado too! Ended the day with a Marlin on a bass rod! PR: Tim Foote Speakers We had an enjoyable presentation from Captain Ron Baker at the Big Fish Seminar. It is good to see that the fishing has been picking up in comparison to last year. What a successful Big Fish Tournament we had! For our September meeting, our speaker will be Mike Gardener. Mike is an expert bass fisherman with his specialty being fishing the bays of Southern California. He has an excellent video on the subject that is well worth getting if you want to hone your bay bass skills. He also has a web site with fishing tips at: g.com/ He's been a successful deckhand, tournament professional, fishing periodical publisher, and fishing guide. He still offers his services as a fishing guide, so you might want to look into that before our next bay tournament! Mike's first book, Fish Have No Hands, and his video "Trophy Spotted Bay Bass", provide in depth looks at Mike's techniques. He is a regular speaker at the Fred Hall Shows and we are lucky to have him come speak to us. Please show your respect and keep the talking down during his presentation Big Fish Director Alex Williamson Holly cows, what a tournament! We had 16 boats with 57 anglers, some from other clubs. Fishing was much better this year than it has been in a long time. So, if your bait survived the run down, you probably did well. The Big Fish Banquet was a huge success. The raffle looked great and if you missed it, wow, you missed one of the best raffles I have ever seen. The food was great, and the winners were all around the room. I really hope you had a great time. As most of you know, my dad passed away on the 16 th and the club did something special for him, they handed out roses to the captains of the boats and asked them to put them in the water once on the way and to say a prayer for him. My mom and I were touched by this, I 4
can t tell you how much it meant to us. Thank you all. This year it paid to come in earlier as we had several ties; the first one in is the winner. For the Tuna category: Ben Arellanez wins 1st place with a 31LB 8OZ Blue Fin for $1500, plus a $500 shopping spree at Fisherman s Landing; as well as the $550 side pot. What a nice payday for him! Second prize was a tie between Bill Fleming and Mike Myers with a 30LB 8OZ blue fin for the Rod and Reel combo, but Bill had the earlier time, so he took it. For the Yellow Tail: John Carol with a 27LB 4OZ took 1st place for $1000, plus a $300 shopping spree at Fisherman s Landing and the $650 side pot. This is the 2nd year in a row that John and his team wins the Yellowtail division! Second prize was Jason Henderson with a 26LB 10OZ for the Rod and Reel combo. For the Dorado, White Sea Bass or Halibut: 1 st prize was a tie between Jay Perez and the young angler, Zack Henderson, with a 13LB 0OZ Dorado. Jay took the podium for a $750 prize, plus a $200 shopping spree at Fisherman s Landing, and the $550 side pot. Even though Jay made it in first to take first place, Zack was still quite happy with his rod and reel combo for second place. All the rods that were given to the 2nd place winners were hand crafted and donated by Ivan s Custom Rods. Anna, Ivan s wife, wrapped them and had the San Diego Rod and Reel Club 29 th Annual Big Fish Tournament embedded on them. They were absolutely beautiful. For me, it was the end of a large project. Luckily I had a lot of help this time around. I want to thank Rhonda for keeping me organized, arranging the dinner and tolerating me these last couple of months. Tim for all the s and reminders. Lee for picking up items and calling. Rex and Daryl for their help making calls and getting donations. Cheri for making the captains bags and keeping me on budget. Linda for keeping the minutes, Janet and Eli for making and the baskets and running the women s raffle. I want to make a special note and thanks for what Lou has done for me in this event. Not only did he secure a lot of donations, he was the force behind this being a success. Be sure to thank him for helping out. Remember, this is all done for free, we don t get paid, we just believe in what the club is doing. Best regards, Alexander Williamson Editor: Gary Mouritzen garyshomeloans@hotmail.com If you talk to any successful angler, you will hear about the research that s involved before heading out onto the big pond. It can be as quick and simple as hearing about the latest catches and where they were, but I think we can all attest to trying that spot the next day to find nothing. It s not just about the location from the previous day s fishing, but more importantly the pattern that leads up to that day. Let s face it, fish move, and so do the paddy s they sit under. Sure, the chances of the tuna pen at the 371 isn t likely to go anywhere real soon, but how often does that happen? Follow the water temps in conjunction with the fish reports to develop the pattern that s being set by these fish. Know that the kelp paddy will move a couple miles during the day, so find the movements of the currents. Put in the research and you will have a successful day. Now Gent Bent, Gary Mouritzen 5
BEILSTEIN 3-DAY ON PRIVATE BOAT One trip we will never forget!! Just returned Sunday (8/5/12) from a 3 day tuna trip. This trip was epic and could be one of the best trips ever! It started with a single jig strike on a rapala at 129 miles. We got a couple bait fish and they seemed to have left. After just a few pieces of chum, they came crashing to the boat and never left the entire day. Anytime you wanted to catch fish, just put on a bait and hold on. We ended the day at 5 pm with 48 yellowfin, 6 bluefin and 11 dorado. The yellowfin were from 30 to 50 lbs with most 35 to 40 lbs. The next morning we trolled for 2 miles and went by a small kelp and got a strike on a 15 lb yellowtail. We all went in and it turned into to a wide open bite on more of the 35 to 45 and a few at 50 lb yellowfin. Again, they never left the boat and any time you wanted to hookup, just put a bait in an look out!!! We called it at noon with a total of 60 yellowfin, 17 dorado,6 bluefin and 2 yellowtail. The fish hold was completely full, so we started releasing about 30 or so 40 lb. yellowfin.
