1 Hello FCM s, ~~~~Bluewater Bulletin~~~~ April, 2017 San Diego Rod and Reel Club (760) Club Meeting April 6 th, 2017 Tony from Freedom Boats Happy Hour at 6:30 Meeting at 7:00 President Tom Gruber Where has time gone, it will be April before we know it! The Fred Hall show was great. I really need to thank a lot of people because without their help, we could not make it work. Curt Itogawa, Bill Renick, Joe Tickey, Michael Guidroz, Tony and Mary Belandres did an excellent job helping to get the booth set up on Wednesday afternoon. We had a great group of volunteers for the 4 days! Ellie Duchene, Sharon Chelette, John and Sue Jocher, Tony and Mary Belandres, Bill and Deb Renick, Wes Ciesielski, Tim Foote (who had just flown in from Puerto Vallarta), Eliseo Sisneros, Manny Granillo, Curt Itogawa, Dave Rehrer, Jeff Feehly, Alan Leff, Michael Guidroz, Daryl White, Miguel and Christina Cabrera, just to name a few. (I apologize if I left anyone off the thank you list; the 4 days are a blur right now). This year we had great sponsorship by Monte at M&M Custom Rods, Joey at SquidCo, Harvey Tucker with AA s and Doug at Fisherman s Landing. But I would especially like to express my appreciation to Mary Belandres for making sure our entire booth always had fresh, homemade food every single day! Mary you ROCK!! So what is next you ask?? Day at the Docks is April 9th; we definitely need all the help we can get. This is a fun filled day watching the kids catch their first fish, and then telling everyone how big it was and how much fun they had. This year we will be assisted by the boys from St. Augustine and San Marcos High Schools. But we still need everyone s help to pull this off as it is a long day for some of us! Anyone interested can contact me at the club meeting or me at TomG4fishin@cox.net. We are gearing up to have a club surf fishing tournament on April 29th with a club picnic on the beach as a potluck. It will be the same as last year, Torrey Pines State Beach. We will plan on starting to fish around 9:00 am till about 1:00pm, so we have a lot of time for the picnicking and socializing. This is a great event to bring the whole family out to. We will have more info at the April meeting and via blasts, so be looking for information from Tim Foote s s. Check out the raffle this month, we will be raffling off 2 surf fishing rods and reels, along with the sand spikes, best of luck to everyone! This month s speaker is Tony Alston with Freedom Boats. If you don t own a boat, this may be your ticket. If you are looking to buy a boat to store in San Diego, or you like to rent boats multiple times per year, this is a new alternative without all the hassles that come with owning a boat. Whether you are a diver, fisherman or just want to enjoy a day on the water, Freedom Boat Club has the boat for you and will save you thousands of dollars and hundreds of hours of doing the things you don't want to do. They are here to revolutionize Boating in San Diego! At our April meeting, we will also be giving away the rod and reel combo to the lucky winner from the Del Mar Show! Hope to see you all at the meeting, Tom Tomg4fishin@cox.net 1
2 Picture of the Month Tony Belandres (Right) caught this 125 pounder between Christmas and New Years 2016 Tony also had this recent catch of a nice Sheepshead while fishing in Loreto. This was not the largest he caught, though his larger model weighed in at 10.2 pounds. Tasty treats right there! Sea Tow Tournament Master Kirk Johnson We had a great turnout for our first tournament of the year. The morning weather was crisp and clear with an orange colored sunrise. The water was smooth and glassy on our way out of San Diego Harbor. Mid-morning we saw the fog come in like a heavy wall. The temperature took a dip and the wind kicked up. We spotted a very large railroad tie floating off the kelp beds of Point Loma. We presumed it must have been debris from the recent stormy weather we ve seen. Just another reminder to be careful out there. We, like many others, had a slow day. Lots of mackerel and a few rockfish here and there. We listened to channel 72 and the chatter amongst those we know as they shared reports and locations. It was a fun day over all and congratulations to Pepe Valdivia who took first place with a 4.62 Vermillion Rockfish. Way to go Pepe! Get your lines wet! Kirk Weigh Master Curt Itogawa The first tournament of the season had good weather, a good turnout, and it appears all the boats caught some fish. I opted to fish three local areas where I had caught rockfish last year; however, this time I was not able to meter any rockfish and very little bait. They have fins, so they are not going to sit in a spot where there isn t any food. I may have to look in the deeper canyons, or find where the red crabs are hiding. Team Hijole knew where to find the rockfish. Pepe took his boat to his famous rockcod hole and swept the tournament. The results of the Bottom Fish Tournament are as follows: 1st Place: Gordon Howe, 4.62 lbs. Vermilion Rockfish. (5 Men s sport points) 2nd Place: Pepe Valdivia, 3.74 lbs. Vermilion Rockfish. (4 Men s sport points) 3rd Place: Hector Lopez, 3.52 lbs. Vermilion Rockfish. (3 Men s sport points) Side Pot: Hector Lopez, 5.70 lbs. Lingcod. So until the next weigh-in, stay safe and have fun. Curt Itogawa 2
3 Clothing Master Tony Belandres LOOKING GOOOOD! We were down to a handful of clothing items, but that s all over now! Just in time for the April meeting, we re going to have some EXTRA-reasonably priced embroidered ball caps. Some are navy, some white with a navy brim, some white with navy brims and mesh backs (for hotheads!), and some really nice khaki caps with navy brims. With our full-color logo and the name of the club, they ll see you coming and know you re part of a great group! We ve got twenty not-too-thin, not-too-heavy, silk screened hooded sweatshirts, all XL in navy, at a one-time amazing price. Come prepared with checks, cash, or a credit card (etc.), because it s such a deal, they ll most likely be gone by the end of the meeting. TOTALLY NEW: We have UPF 40, moisture-wicking, high neck, long sleeved technical Tees for both men and women. The men s are navy, the ladies are Columbia blue, a pretty shade (not too dark, not too light). The ladies shirts run large, so we suggest that you consider buying one size smaller than usual. These shirts block 90 percent of the UV rays, breathe like you won t believe, and are lightweight and comfy. Check around; you ll see that these babies, printed with our logo, are a smokin deal at barely half the usual price. We anticipate selling most of this new stock at its debut in April. If you miss out, let us know what you want, and we ll get another in your size in the next order. There will also be T-shirts and wide-brimmed hats. Next up: Check out the dressier, modern-styled, soft-shell, fleecelined, water repellant, embroidered Jackets on display. (Psst great for Mother s Day -- that s ten days after the May meeting). Place your order and deposit now so you ll be stylin in May. We ll have a size chart, so measure something that fits your sweetie well, and come ready to order. In sizes for men (also talls), women, and youth. Tony Belandres thebigkatuna@cox.net Support Our home during & outside of our meetings. Bali Hai Restaurant 2230 Shelter Island Dr San Diego, CA Raffle Master Ellie Duchene Hello Club Members, We didn't have a raffle in March because of the awards banquet the end of February, but I m excited about the raffle in April on the 6th. Tom was able to get some deals at the Fred Hall show in San Diego, plus Tony and I got a couple reels in Long Beach so we will have some new tackle on the table. Sharon and I will be trying the wish bags on a few items to see if that works for club members that may only want to try and win certain tackle that you may need. Please give us your feedback on what you think about this idea. Looking forward to seeing everyone in April. Till then, Roll the Barrel!!! Love, Ellie 3
