1 ~~~~Bluewater Bulletin~~~~ February, 2017 San Diego Rod and Reel Club (760) Club Meeting February 2 nd, 2017 Happy Hour at 6:30 Meeting at 7:00 Speaker: Yanni Hassir President Tom Gruber Here we are starting a new year. Your board is working hard to get things started. I am really excited about this month s speaker. If you missed Let s Talk Hook Up last Sunday, you missed a great show. Yanni Hassir from Fisherman s Belly was Pete and Ricky s guest and it was one of the quickest shows I ve ever listened to; it was full of information and energy. I had to ask him to be our guest speaker so that the rest of you can enjoy the experience of listening to him talk. Fisherman's Belly is the brainchild of Yanni Hassir, a SoCal waterman whose passion extends from the ocean to his kitchen. FishermansBelly.com offers a growing list of seasonal SoCal sport fish recipes. There are tips and tricks for cooking yellowtail, rockfish, white seabass, halibut, lobster, tuna, trout, and more. Every recipe is easy to follow and made from everyday ingredients packed with flavor. In addition, enjoy Yanni and his buddies' SoCal fishing adventures. As a full blooded Greek, Yanni's thirst for the sea and its bounty can be attributed to his ancient fish-eating ancestors. Yanni learned to cook from his mother who was a sous chef at the King's Palace in Greece. Yanni uses big flavors, imagination, and his latest catch to please his family, friends, and, of course, his own belly. Our first event will be Poway Lakes on February 4th. We have a small tradition the morning of the event. The volunteers meet at Cully s Restaurant located at Poway Rd. (858) at 8:00am. Everyone pays for their own breakfast. Please RSVP at the February meeting if you would like to attend. The clamming event is scheduled for February 11th. This will totally depend on water quality. February 26th is the awards banquet, which will be held at the Admiral Baker Club House in Mission Gorge. There will be more info on this event later in the bulletin. March 11th will be a Bottom Fishing Tournament; details to follow next month. One of our biggest fund raising events is the Fred Hall Show, which will be March 23rd 26th in San Diego. We need a lot of help for these 4 days in the booth. Set up will be on Wednesday March 22nd around 4:00pm. More details to follow next month. Lastly, we are still looking for 1 or 1 more volunteers for the board. If you are interested, please see me at the meeting. I hope everyone is staying high and dry. 2 Hello FCMs, VP Bill Renick As most of you know, Norm is recuperating and I am sitting in for him. Norm is optimistic, but your prayers and good wishes will be appreciated. As I write this, the February meeting is ON and the March meeting is canceled due to the timing of the banquet. Upcoming events include: The Fred Hall Show in Long Beach on March 1 through 5th and in Del Mar from March 23 through 26th. Hope to see everyone there! The Poway Lakes Youth Fishing Derby is scheduled for Feb 4th and your help is needed. As always, we will do hot dogs, chips, and drinks. Lunch is usually served at 11 AM, so we need help for setup starting at 8:30 and help in serving the food. It s a very rewarding experience and the families are very much appreciative for our help. We are planning a Clamming Picnic at the Silver Strand State Beach on February 11th. Low tide is at 2:45pm, so the event will begin at noon and end around 5pm. Of course, this event is weather permitting remember that rain and water pollution will cancel the event, so let s hope for beautiful weather. Bill Weigh Master Curt Itogawa This month s tournament report is more about the weather than fishing reports. The state of California has been getting good amounts of rain and snow, with enough runoff to refill our lakes and streams. The rains will rejuvenate the river systems and hopefully improve the anadromous fish populations (An anadromous fish are born in fresh water, spends most of its life in the sea and returns to fresh water to spawn. Salmon, smelt, shad, striped bass, and sturgeon are common examples). All the nutrients washing into the Pacific Ocean will jump start the food cycle, increase the forage fish base, and keep the Yellowtail and Bluefin tuna in our local waters. Perhaps the Albacore will return to join the feeding frenzy this year. Speaking of feeding frenzies, we are cooking hot dogs for Captain Ron Baker s Kids Fishing Derby at Lake Poway on February 4th. The club members will cook and serve about 800 hot dogs to the kids and family members. We will need your help for this event. Staying with the food theme, our club s Awards Banquet is on February 26th at the Admiral Baker Resort. It s going to be a fun time, so plan to attend. I will be handing out a lot of awards for great catches, along with various perpetual trophies and the renowned Chuck Byron Perpetual Award for the member who contributes the most, but isn t on the board. 3 Hello FCM s, Clothing Master Tony Belandres Hope you were able to grab some of our blow-out sale items. Items were flying off the shelf!! We do have a few shirts and a couple sweatshirts available, so just reach out to me and I will get you hooked up! Since we do have very few items left, there will be no clothing table set up at the next meeting. We are in the process of finding a new vendor to produce some new clothing for us. At that time we will put together an order of clothing for you to choose from. If there is a specific item you would like to have, please talk to me at the next meeting and I will put an order in for you. Shirts, jackets, hats... you name it and we ll order it! We can even customize it to have your name on it and, if you have one, your boat s name on it as well. Till next month, Tony Raffle Master Ellie Duchene Hello Club Members, The January meeting and raffle at the Bali Hai was a great time and enjoyed by all! Gabe did a great job shopping for the raffle. He bought quality items and everyone liked the results. Tony was the lucky winner of the gold Avet reel, so he went home as a happy new board member! For some reason, board members get lucky in the raffle. It s Karma! It is hard to always have a table full of raffle items that isn't full of items that all of our members and guests already have in their arsenal. If you have some ideas of what you would like to see on the table, please share them with me I will be sure to make a note of it! 4 Chef s Corner By Ellie Duchene Several club members asked me to put this recipe in the bulletin: Jewell Cookies The following recipe makes 2 dozen cookies, but you will want to double this recipe!! 1/2 cup soft butter 1/4 cup brown sugar Then cream both well together. Now add 1 tsp. vanilla 1 cup flour Chill dough roll into 1" balls. Prepare: 1 cup chopped nuts (either walnuts or pecans). and 1 egg separated. Now dip dough rolls into beaten egg whites and then roll them over the chopped nuts. Next ingredient: Raspberry jam. Press center of each cookie and put in 1/4 tsp. jam. He has consistently donated to our raffles as well. Chad speaks openly about fishing techniques when it comes to his lures. If you search for him on Youtube, you will find some videos on equipment and techniques used for either Bass or Yellowtail. When you see him at the meetings, be sure to ask him which lures work best for the different species you are targeting and where you plan on targeting them. He will set you up from fresh water to salt water. You saw the Picture of the Week well, it was really difficult to pick between that one and this 31 pound Home Guard Yellowtail: He caught this one with the 5/8ths Black & Gold. He also has a plethora of bass to his record. His lures really work! Get Bent! Gary 4

5 Hello FCM s, We have finally picked the location and date for the 2016 Awards Banquet. This year we will be at the Admiral Baker Club House in Mission Gorge. The date is February 26 th from 11:00am to 3:00pm. The cost of advanced tickets purchased before February 20 th is $30.00 for adults. After February 20 th the cost will go to $35.00 for adults. For kids 4-10 the cost is $ Children 3 and under eat for free. A small group of us met at Admiral Baker Club House for the Sunday brunch. The food and the view was wonderful. This is a full Champagne brunch serving: serving: Breakfast favorites Omelet Station Smoked Salmon with all the toppings Shrimp Cocktail Prime Rib, Ham, Chicken and Fish entrees Garden Fresh Salads and Vegetables Fruit, Cheeses and breads Desserts, pastries and ice cream bar Coffee, Tea, and Champagne. And Lots More! Because we are paying for the use of the facility, everyone in attendance must pay, whether you eat or not.
