~~~~Bluewater Bulletin~~~~ November, 2015 San Diego Rod and Reel Club (619) Club Meeting Thursday, November 5 th at the Bali Hai 6:00 Happy Hour 7:00 Meeting President Alex Williamson Greetings All, Has it already been a year since they announced that we had to have FMT permit (Visa) to fish in MX waters? Well, I am sure we all feel safer and that they have made the paperwork so much easier to work since the announcement. Ok, maybe we don t feel safer, but worried that the military would damage our boats when they board us. I just don t like knowing there is a finger on a 90mm automatic pointed at the boat I am in as they race towards us. I know for me it is harder to get on a boat that is headed to Mexico as most of you want to now fish in US waters. I have been on several sports boats since the Visa requirements and find the sports boats are the only way to do it easier. By the way, the news now is that the military will no longer give you a slap on the hand and send you back to the US, they are now towing you to Ensenada (as reported recently on 976BITE.com). Officer elections are in December. Here is a quick review of what is requested to be on the board: You should be in our club for at least one year. We ask for a three year commitment, but some do more, others do less. Board meetings are usually every other month and are always the Tuesday after our Club meeting at 6:30 at the Bali Hai. The board meetings are usually over before 8pm. We have several events that we run throughout the year and ask for you to try to attend half of them. Major events are the Fred Hall Show, Day at the Docks, Big Fish, and four kid s events. Each officer also has their own specialized duties. At the back of the bulletin is a copy of the board positions and their responsibilities. In some cases the board positions are chosen or requested. So, if you have an interest in a particular position, let us know and we will hook you up with that board member. Your club needs you and your ideas, give it some thought and I look forward to seeing you at the next meeting on November 6th at the Bali Hai. Happy fishing, Alex Picture of the Month Doc Lee Fleming and crew managed to muscle this beast into the boat. Full story inside! 1
Hello FCMS, VP Norm Campbell I sure did miss all of you at the October meeting. I was putting in my "fishing time" on the Royal Polaris. I say "fishing time," as there was not much catching being done on this trip. Three days and a total of seven fish caught on the entire boat. We have to put the "fishing time" in to get to the "catching time" we all so enjoy! Let's just say my "fishing time card" has the ledger owing me some "catching time." So, on to the "catching time." The Tuna are still around; however, the main attraction for me is the Wahoo. The colors working are black with pink and purple Marauders, and the Tony the Tiger special in the black and orange. There is also interest in the lime green to chartreuse and black ones. The full size seems to work best and I have not seen any caught in the under 30lb class. It's a troll marathon until the reel starts screaming, shortly followed by the guy on the end of the rod, as we all know what's on the other end! Just be extremely careful of these tasty fish, the teeth work in a scissor action and do serious damage in the blink of an eye. Just welcome them aboard with the "fish stick" (mine is a baseball bat). This fishing season has been amazing in so many ways. You can experience catching fish on a overnight outing that you usually have to be on a five day trip. This is the time to spend some of the rainy day fund to get out and enjoy this awesome season! Our latest tournament... Can you believe Rolly and I actually caught a correct species of fish for the tournament!! I will tell you, it was meant to be. We had a full spread out in back of the Whaler, five jigs in total. Three Marauders and a Cedar plug daisy chain along with a Squidly daisy chain. (Both of these are Norm specials as I make them up and will show you how, just ask me.) This Dorado was so committed to being caught; it took serious effort to get the hook out. Usually you have to be so careful on the retrieve not to pull the hook! I mean seriously, Rolly was swinging for a home run to clear what we thought was a piece of kelp on the jig, it did not even come off the release pin on the outrigger. As it came in, and we saw it was a fish, we just kind of looked at each other in a good grief kind of moment. I mean honestly, we tried to shake it off! Just goes to show you, even two blind squirrels manage to find the correct nut once in awhile! Maybe the fish Gods read the last newsletter. So in closing, this is the time to raid the cookie jar and go fishing. Just tell the Mrs., "Norm said it was ok!!". Get out there and put a bend on that rod! ~Norm Sea Tow Support Our home during & outside of our meetings. Bali Hai Restaurant 2230 Shelter Island Dr San Diego, CA
Weigh Master Curt Itogawa The normally pleasant October Pacific Ocean and weather conditions were more like the inside of a Maytag washer with the occasional rain shower during the last club fishing tournament. The targeted pelagic fish were far and few between with most of the kelp paddies empty of fish. Many of the tournament boats were looking for the elusive wahoo to take the jack pot. Even though Doc Fleming s boat was not fishing the tournament, he made a memorable catch of a 456 lb. Blue Marlin. Unfortunately the fish became tail wrapped and died, but it will not go to waste. The results of the tournament are as follows: 1 st Place; Dennis Johnson, lbs. Yellowtail. (Men s sport points 5) 2 nd Place; John Plemons, lbs. Yellowtail. (Men s sport points 4) 3 rd Place; Rolly Lira, 6.04 lbs. Dorado. (Men s sport points 3) 1 st Place Junior; Leonardo Torres, lbs. Yellowtail. (Junior s sport points 5) Side pot; George Ito, lbs. Wahoo. So, until the next weigh-in, stay safe and have fun. Curtis Itogawa Fellow FCM, Membership Gabriel Segura We are offering an incentive to renew early this year. You will receive one ticket for the Rod and Reel combo that we are raffling off if you renew in November until all the tickets are gone. There are only 35 tickets left, so come see me first thing. Once all the tickets are gone, we will be pulling a name and one lucky person will be the winner of the rod and reel combo. The tickets sell for $10 each, that s a $10 value for renewing early. We want to put it out there that we will no longer be mailing out bulletins as most can get it by or on the web. We will be having some copies available at the meeting for you to peruse. As always, Fish-on club members!! Gabe Segura Raffle Master Ellie Duchene Hello FCM'S, Hello FCM'S, Thank you for your continued support of the club raffle. Kellee and I are enjoying doing the raffle and, with your help, we want the raffle to be fun and profitable for both you and the club. Please continue to give us your suggestiions on what you would like to see on the table. We try to put out a quality rod and reel, along with other tackle you might need. Since we didn't have a basket last month, Janet is planning on doing one for Thanksgiving. So, don't miss your opportunity to buy tickets at a chance to win. Looking forward to seeing all of you at the meeting. Roll the Barrel!!! Kellee and Don 3
Tournament Director Rolly Lira Annual Interclub Bay Bass Tournament: SD Rod and Reel Club vs. SD Anglers November 14 th, 2015 San Diego Bay Lines in at first light. Weigh-in 2:00-3:00 pm Target species: Largest bass... Sand Bass or Spotty. 1 st, 2 nd, and 3 rd place awards. Side-pot: largest Halibut Inter club scoring will be based on the heaviest fish: 1 point for spotty, 1 point for sandy, and 1point for halibut. 2 out of 3 will win the trophy. BBQ to follow. Restricted to San Diego Bay (imaginary line from Pt. Loma Light House to the tip of Zuniga Jetty) Sign up at the next club meeting or call me before 9:00 pm, Nov. 13 th at See you then, Rolly Editor Gary Mouritzen garyshomeloans@hotmail.com Hello FCM's, We brought home the trophy, with SDRRC representing 1st and 2nd place for the Let's Talk Hookup tournament in memory of Lou Duchene. My team consisted of Curt Itogawa and David Rehrer. We arrived just in time to Palmas de Cortez for the tournament meeting. After getting the rules, t-shirts and hats, we headed to get our boat confirmed for the tournament. Turned out our boat became dry-docked for repairs, so they hooked us up with another boat which turned out for the better! We deceided to pre-fish the tournament and targeted Marlin. We ended up catching and releasing 2 marlin and 1 sailfish, as well as losing one due to the hook coming out. Since the tournament included Wahoo, Tuna and Roosters, we decided to see what we could get in that respect. We ended up catching 2 small Skipjack. After hearing other reports, we decided to stick with the Marlin, even though there was a cash payout for the top Tuna and Wahoo. First day of the tournament we got a marlin and a sailfish, giving us 80 points and put us in 2 nd place. The next day we caught 4 marlin (and lost a sailfish), giving us an additional 200 points and the win for the tournament! Curt Itogawa named our team appropriately: Lou s Tomodachi (Japanese for Lou s Friends) There was a point where I prayed to Lou for a little help in the tournament and I remembered him winning this tournament with the same type of results 4 marlin on the last day. Thanks Lou we did it! Now, Get Bent! Gary 3518 Barnett Ave, SD,
The Big One that didn t get away From Doc Fleming: Hooked up at 1205 hours and landed at 1445 hours. Location was just outside the middle of the 9 mile bank. Weighed in at SD Marlin Club. 456 lbs!!! Rod custom built by Squidco XXH Seeker, 5' Shimano 30W 130 spectra with 100 yds of 80# hi-vis yellow with an Albright Special knot connection. She came in tail wrapped and died around 2 hours in the fight and about 30 yards of mono away from a bill noose. We had every intention of a release. Her air bladder all of a sudden collapsed and down she went. I was on the reel at the time (a team fought fish), and I thought she got a 2nd wind. There were no head shakes, just dead weight, and down, down she went, through all the mono and about half of the braid before I stopped the spool with a gloved hand and the drag buttoned down, she was probably feet down at that point. I never thought we would get her up. We all took turns pulling the line with gloved hands and a half crank on the reel. We went through 2 pairs of Aftco gloves on the braided line. Once we got to the mono, things began to go a little faster. At deep color, my son, Dan Fleming, donned a mask and dove down and saw that she was tail wrapped. He came back up to the surface and I tossed him a mooring line. He dove down and looped the tail. It took 5 of us to man-handle the fish through the transom door, tail first. They don't go backwards very well. Lori Byron Sachau was 1st on the reel, so she got the credit at SDMC, but it was a boat fish. It took all of us to get her in. Doc
