He grew up at San Clemente Sport Fishing, where his Dad started a 70-year-long career in the industry. His earliest memories are not of riding his bike with friends, but instead chasing bait around in the receiver. Thirty-something years later, after captaining many of the local sport boat s on the West Coast, private yachts, deliveries to Mexico and beyond, he still loves doing what he loves. All those years of experience have now culminated into Captain Dave s Saltwater Guide Service. He is a CAPTAIN FOR HIRE who loves taking clients fishing on their own vessels. Captain Dave s Guide Service offers those of you that own your own boat the opportunity to take the learning curve out of both boating and fishing, and/or refine your fishing skills, by allowing Captain Dave, to teach you various skills that are vital to successful fishing trips, including: (a) Boat handling skills (docking) (b) How to use your electronics (c) Fishing spots along our coast, and most importantly, how to fish them (d) Tying rigs and knots, (e) Bait selection. This is the tournament where any fish species is eligible and the club Angler of the Year point system is applied to the weight of the fish in order to level the playing field. This gives participants lots of options to plot their strategy as the winning fish could come from any species. There were some very nice fish submitted, so congratulations to all of the participants. There were also some other high-point total fish caught that would have been in contention for the top prizes, but the weight receipts didn't get submitted by the tournament cutoff. 3 Possible 2 day trip on the Liberty Now that we have been introduced to the Liberty and its bunks, a few people asked me about doing an overnight or 2-day trip on the Liberty. I talked with Taro about it a little bit and, now it is time to take a poll, and if there is enough interest in doing a Monday-Tuesday charter next summer, maybe Aug or Sept. (Price is way cheaper on weekdays then weekends!) It would be limited load of 24, cost would be about $650 including meals and permits. Anybody who would be interested in doing something like that, let me (Dwayne) know and if enough people say yes, then I will get it booked. Possible Rock Cod trip If enough people would like to do a rock cod charter later in the year, I can certainly look into it and charter a boat that would hold the amount of interested people. Let me (Dwayne) know and we will see about getting it done! 3/4-Day Reports from the San Diego and Liberty Charters From Dwayne Patenaude We have been lucky all year with our trip planning and catching fish with most of our charters this year, and these 2 charters were no different. We ended up getting limits of Yellowfin tuna on both trips (limited load of 30) with the last stop on both trips being what they call a "ripper"! Pretty much every bait that hit the water was inhaled. Screams of "use the heavy stuff" from the guys on the bait tank was echoed on both trips as the chaos ensued for a good hour or so on both trips. When we were done on the San Diego trip, Ryan called in the Liberty and in they came. The skipper swung the stern of the Liberty into the stern of the San Diego and as Paul, who was standing on the bait tank of the Liberty started brailing the chum, they went solid bendo as Ryan slowly drove the boat away as not to spook the fish away from the Liberty. It was quite a picture to see the Liberty go bendo with every rod and screams of delight from the passengers of both boats as the chaos developed! Quite a trip as many of the club members caught their first Yellowfin tuna and got to experience the pinnacle of tuna fishing as the fish were boiling and the passengers weaved their way around the boat trying to follow their fish so they wouldn't be cut off! Just a few days later we all boarded the Liberty to do the same thing. Captain Taro called me the night before and asked everyone to bring passports as the fish moved farther down the beach and started to move closer to the 12-mile limit where an FMM is required. Some of the boats had struck out the day before, so there was a little bit of worry as we steamed south through the Islands checking conditions just in case we had to scoot back to the Islands to save the day. It turned out that game plan was not necessary as Taro found a school about 1:00 PM in the afternoon at 42 miles from Point Loma. They wanted to bite and Capt Taro encouraged every one to use the 40 lb. from the top of the bait tank. It did not take very long before the sacks were full of tuna for everyone! Pretty much the same thing on Sunday as we worked together the best we could with all the adrenalin pumping through our veins putting tuna on the deck! The bite finally died and the long process of stapling the sack numbers on the gill plates as the fish were dropped into the ice water below decks for filleting in a few hours. We hit the beach about 6 or 7 pm with happy faces and full ice chests! See pages 5 and 6 for photos from the San Diego and Liberty charters September 20, /4-Day Charter on the Liberty From Bobby Rollins On Wednesday, September 20th, we all gathered at Fisherman s Landing to depart on the Liberty for a 3/4-day tuna trip. Right from the start we knew we could be in to a rough trip due to the quick breeze and cloudy skies. We were told the tuna had moved along the coast and south of the Coronados. The bait was good size, however a little tired. We headed southbound, on a 3-hour run to the area where the tuna should be. It took a few hours of trolling before we got all 4 rods hooked up. We picked up a few on bait, but it took a little more driving before we hit the mother load! Our skipper yelled, Throw heavy chum!!' We all knew this was the spot. We threw Colt snipers, flat falls and bait. It all worked, we got our limits in a few hours. The size of the Yellow-fin ranged from 15 to 20 lbs., with a few 25-lb toads. We stopped fishing around 1:30 and headed northbound for a 5-hour ride. The crew had a big job on their hands handling the cleaning of the fish. A big thanks for Earl, Louis and a few others for helping clean the boat of all the tuna blood and squished bait! The crew really appreciated the help. A big thanks goes to Dwayne for organizing another outstanding trip! 3
4 Hello Crew Members, 2017 Lake Cuyamaca Fishing in the Pines Kids Derby It was nice to feel the crisp Autumn air with a wonderful bunch of volunteer/participants. Dave and Destiny Chavez were probably the first to arrive early that morning. Nancy Ortiz, John Otto, and myself arrived about 9:30 and saw a lot of the site already set up. Dwayne, Mike Kezele, Glen Gerber, Mike Tombleson, and son Michael, Glenn Gerber, Donald Pehle were already there and surely were part of the setup. Thank You Guys! The three of us offloaded what was on my truck and headed down to the restaurant for breakfast that we missed out on earlier that morning. Once inside we were happy to see Doug and Dora Schulte and Eric and Kim Klingensmith enjoying breakfast, reading themselves for the day ahead. Returning to the derby site, we were welcomed by the rest of our crew including, Jill Broadfoot, Janice Krause, Paula from the lake and John Doe (trying to be all inclusive :) ). The gang had already gotten the grills going and started cooking up a couple hot dogs and hamburgers as well as the marinated fish that had been filleted the day before at Al the Sportsman s Pal s house by the following fillet masters ( Mike Tombleson, Dwayne Patenaude, Al Stasukevich, Mike Kezele, Rudy Garcia, Nick Nichols, Charles Fouquette, Butch, and myself ). Thank You Guys, it made a difference, no muss or fuss and especially no yellow jackets. Ultimately what a great day for all of the kids that came up with their parents and/or grandparents and friends to try their luck at landing all those great fish that Butch and Company planted for this event. The turnout may have not been as large as in previous years but still impressive. All of the chefs on the grill and the servers on the front line made it go like clockwork, as if we knew what we were doing, and thanks so much for volunteering. I hope you all had a good time, and it sure makes a difference for all of those kids. I don t know how many times I heard THANK YOUS for All of US, Great Job Gang! 4
