1 ~~~~Bluewater Bulletin~~~~ October, 2017 San Diego Rod and Reel Club (760) Club Meeting October 5 th, 2017 Speaker: Baja Fishing Convoys Happy Hour starts at 6:00 Meeting begins at 7:00 Hello FCM s, President Tom Gruber The Big Fish Tournament has come and gone. I hope everyone enjoyed the event. A Big Thank You to the staff at Silver Gate Yacht Club for making the banquet a great success. Thanks to the board and all the volunteers who dedicated numerous hours to make the event so successful. Our sponsors were most generous this year and we encourage you to do business with them year-round and thank them for their generous support of our club. I hear from rumors the tuna are still here, Yellowfin and Bluefin. I have seen some nice posts on our Facebook page of some of you catching nice Dorados, Yellowtail, and Calico Bass. If you haven t liked us on Facebook yet, check us out and join our group: s/ / We have a great speaker lined up for you this month; Orchid Martinez from Baja Fishing Convoys will be with us. Orchid not only does one stop fishing packages, but she also has a wealth of knowledge about getting the biosphere passes. Orchid was born and raised in Los Angeles County. Her professional strongpoint comes from working in the travel industry since 1992 after graduating from Travel & Tourism at Long Beach City College. She has worked for known companies; such as, Princess Cruises, AAA Travel and Cedros Outdoor Adventures. She started to fish when she was 8 years old with her father, Javier Martinez, at Long Beach Harbor. This was back when the Queen Mary was actually still floating in the harbor. Her first three fish were harbor king fish. Orchid now lives with her soonto-be husband, Jonathan, and her daughter Maria Isabel. Orchid & Johnny started Baja Fishing Convoys in August of 2015 and have been running it ever since. Baja Fishing Convoys offers turnkey, one-stop fishing packages to diverse fishing destinations throughout the Baja peninsula. Their job is to make your trip the most enjoyable by taking care of the smallest details so you don t have to worry about them. BFC offers self-drive, escorted and fly-in fishing destinations. They started off by setting up caravans (convoys) with people who really wanted to get down to fish in Baja, but did not want to do it alone. BFC destinations feature amazing Baja fishing spots such as Cedros Island, La Bocana, La Paz, Mag Bay, Loreto, Bahia de Los Angeles, Ensenada, San Quintin, San Felipe, Bahia Asuncion, San Bruno, and more. Now travelling to Baja to fish is a simple as picking up the phone and calling Orchid. Lastly, I know many of you have heard this before, but your club needs your help filling in board positions. We have several people coming off the board and the positions need to be filled. If you would like to help the club, please talk to one of us. It is a very rewarding experience. Till next month, Tom Tomg4fishin@cox.net 1
2 Hello FCMs VP Bill Renick The Chula Vista Harborfest event ( teaching casting ) was a winner. Nobody caught a fish, but we had a lot of fun. I am looking forward to next year. Some of us will be going out on a Kids Fishing Trip soon. It s for the Mayor s office, so we may get publicity out of it. I will tell all next month. That s all of the fun stuff until the Christmas Party. See you there! Please contact me if you have any suggestions or ideas for future club events! I look forward to working with all of you. Weigh Master Curt Itogawa After the very successful Lou Duchene Memorial Big Fish Tournament, we are back on a regular schedule of club fishing tournaments. The September Yellowtail Tournament was held at the South Shore launch ramp in Mission Bay. This was a much better choice than the zoo like activity at the Dana Landing launch ramp. The La Jolla area looked like a parking lot of boats, and most of them must have launched at Dana. There were plenty of Bonito to be caught, but the Yellowtail fishing was a challenge. Only some of the boats in the tournament were able to score some nice Yellows. The results of the Yellowtail Tournament are as follows: 1st. Place: Bob Clark (nonmember), lb. Yellowtail. 1st. Place Junior Angler: Marco Mouritzen, lbs. Yellowtail. (5 Junior s Sport Points) Side Pot: Gary Mouritzen, 2.22 lbs. Calico Bass. Be sure to sign up with Kirk Johnson for the next tourney Halibut on Oct 14 th with the weigh in at South Shores. So, until the next weight-in, stay safe and have fun. Curtis Itogawa Picture of the Month Gary Mouritzen with a personal best 120 lb Bluefin Tuna caught locally aboard the Islander. Support Our home during & outside of our meetings. Bali Hai Restaurant 2230 Shelter Island Dr San Diego, CA nd. Place: John Chuckta Sr. (non-member), lb. YT. 3rd. Place: Gary Mouritzen, lb. Yellowtail. (5 Men s Sport points) Sea Tow 2

You may not have fished our biggest tournament of the year, but that doesn t mean you can t get the shirt! On a black T-shirt, with a big, beautiful Yellowfin tuna on the back, it commemorates our 34th Annual Big Fish Tournament. It s great advertising for our club and for the sponsors who helped fund our kids and wounded warriors fishing programs. Wear it proudly, wear it everywhere! We have very few ladies V-neck Tees left (no pockets on the ladies shirts, no printing on sleeves). Men s pocket Tees are available from Medium to 3X. Get spares, so you can still be looking sharp after your first shirt eventually starts to show its age ($15). The nice people at TCB Embroidery gave us a slew of jackets, shirts, and ball caps for the tournament. All the jackets, and some of the hats and shirts, went to tournament winners. The remaining hats sold out at the banquet. We re down to a few beautifully embroidered shirts in various sizes and colors. They d LOST, FOUND, AND ABOUT TO BE GONE This heavy coat was left at last December s banquet at the Silver Gate Yacht Club. Since then, it has been living at our club s clothing table. However, its time is up and it will be gracing the racks at Goodwill if it isn t claimed at the October meeting. Please check with the lovely person you were with at the banquet to see if you can t help it find its way home again. Mary Belandres Hello FCM'S, Raffle Master Ellie Duchene We had another great Big Fish seminar raffle. Thank you to Mary for the delicious cookies, and to Janet for the silent auction basket. Norm bought the Lake Cuyamaca basket, but we have more for the Big Fish Awards Banquet. It was Gary and Marco's night to shine. They won prizes for the BBB tournament and took home many raffle prizes as well. Always great to see our Jr. s win! It takes a team to make the Big Fish successful. We are so fortunate for all the donations we have received for the Big Fish raffles. We will continue to make the raffles fun and I thank you for your support. Hope to see you at the next meeting. Roll the Barrel!! Ellie 3
4 Membership By Rhonda Gruber Hello FCM s, Where has the year gone? Starting in the month of October, we will begin Early Bird Signups. The price is still the same, $60.00 for a single membership and $70.00 for a family membership. Badges are still only $5.00. We will be raffling off a Sea- Tow Membership at the December meeting for those who sign up early. This year I will be asking that each of you complete the membership application in full. We already have plans to have the new yearbook printed in the month of January and we want the most accurate information when we go to print. The 2018 membership application can be found on our website or you can download it from the bulletin. Till next month, Rhonda Gruber Editor Gary Mouritzen GarysHomeLoans@hotmail.com Hello Fellow FCM s, Wow, what a year this is turning out to be! I had my personal best Calico and then a personal best Bluefin. To top it off, my son Marco gets his personal best Yellowtail. Life is good on the ocean this year. Looking at the weight receipt list, I know there are some of us who have caught a Yellowfin Tuna, but the 1 st Yellowfin of the Year spot remains open. I also know that local Dorado have been caught, but the 1 st Dorado spot is still open. I know I personally messed up on that because I ve caught a bunch, but never weighed them! Probably because I thought I would get beat out by a bigger one. So, keep that scale with you, weigh your catch and then take 2 minutes to fill out and turn in a weight-receipt to Curt Itogawa. At the meeting, tell me what 2 spots are open for a ticket. I have to give a shout out to my best fishing buddy my son Marco Antonio! He has been such a fishing trooper!! For those of you that have been in the club long enough know that I kept anxiously waiting for him to be older and be able to pull in bigger fish. Marco is a fighter and loves pulling on heavy fish! I couldn t be more proud of him, and even more so that he is going to be Jr. Angler of the Year. What will be more special is if we can win it together!! I am currently in 1 st place, but there s a lot of room behind me for people to catch up, so I m not taking it lightly! The competetion is tough and it just takes a missed fish to lose the spot. As my title shows, I do Home Loans and our fellow FCM Rick Beck just completed a quick refinance with me. I wanted to share his testimonial: We needed to do some consolidation of debt, so we pulled out equity from our home. This time, instead of our bank, we decided to deal with a fishing pal and FCM. Gary Mouritzen gave us excellent service and the loan was promptly executed with a minimum of hassle at a fair cost. Highly recommended and keeping it in "the family"; I'd much rather pay him than a soulless bank. Tight lines, Rick and Helen Beck Purchase or Refi, I m here to help! Call me for an honest opinion. FCM s are family! Gary Mouritzen 4

7 All this to raise money to take kids fishing, for which we just finished our first Kids Fishing Trip in September:
8 Big Fish Sponsors RULE!! The people and companies that sponsored our Big Fish tournament made it a HUGE success for the club, for the competitors, for us all! We had a raffle at the banquet that was just amazing in its size and scope, ranging from gear, to clothing, to camping/fishing trips, to fishing tech. Jewelry, varied boat services, fish processing, bait, fun outings for singles & couples & families, flowers, art, rods and reels, taxidermy, resort stays, the amazing gift baskets, the list just goes on and on. There were over 60 donors and sponsors! We didn t have the time to raffle everything we took in, so swag in Fall meeting raffles will be very, very good. Don t miss a meeting! Their generosity, combined with our members support and participation in this tournament, has helped fund our year-round kids and wounded warriors fishing programs. It s a major boost to our budget. We re asking you to take this effort and build on it. We ve probably lost some donors because they feel like we come around once a year, hit them up, and disappear until the next year. Check out the list of donors, and the ones you go to? Take half a minute to tell the people there something like I belong to the San Diego Rod and Reel Club. Your company contributed to our Big Fish tournament and helped make it a big success for our kids and veterans fishing programs. We appreciate your support - please tell the owner that s why I m YOUR customer. It s good to thank our supporters every time you see one. More than once doesn t hurt! Thanks again for supporting the San Diego Rod and Reel Club. It s simple, painless, and it pays off. Please do your part -- take the board s efforts and take it all the way home.

For those of you who did not take us up on the 2 ½ Charter on the Islander, you missed an epic trip. My first fish was a personal best Bluefin at 80 pounds, until I got my 2 nd fish and new personal best at 120 pounds! My friend Justen Brown scored the jackpot fish at 155 pounds. His 2 nd fish is that little guy to his right quite a different battle, I would say!!
