1 TM THE OFFICIAL PUBLICATION OF THE SAN DIEGO ANGLERS PUBLISHED MONTHLY VOLUME XXX NUMBER 11 November 2018 tm Nov 7th SDA Annual Tackle Swapmeet Portuguese Hall Point Loma Nov 14th SDA Board Meeting The San Diego Anglers Are Proud to Present SD Anglers Annual Fishing & Tackle Swap Meet at Portuguese Hall 2818 Avenida de Portugal San Diego, CA It s time once again to clean out that closet or garage, dig through all of your fishing and boating gear, raffle prizes, or any other fishing-related items you no longer need or want, and haul them to our November swap meet meeting to sell or trade. Doors open at 5:30pm This is a great time to make a bit of cash to put toward those upcoming tournaments and fishing trips, or maybe buy a nice surprise for that special someone. We will once again have the swap meet at the Portuguese Hall to make room for all the sellers and buyers. This is a big event, so come on down and browse the tables for that special lure nobody sells anymore, or a gently used reel to replace the one you wore out pulling on big fish. The swap meet is free for buyers and open to the general public, so bring a friend or two. 1
2 Warriors on the Water" aboard the "Liberty" By Debbie Patenaude, WOW Chairperson I believe this was our very best WOW trip yet! After deliberating with Captain Taro, weighing the pros and cons, we chose to go to the Coronado Islands in preference to off-shore tuna fishing, hoping to make sure everyone got fish. So, early, 4:15am, on Wednesday, September 26th, our SDA volunteers, Alisa, Bobby, Norm, Mike Kezele, Rudy, Dwayne, Debbie, Steve Carson all set with multiple Bonito rigs, and Chad, with plenty of Hook Up Baits to go around, the others bearing rods to share showed up at Fisherman's Landing ready to welcome our warriors. We thought we would be there before our WOW anglers but we underestimated how excited they were! Many showed up very early! About 5:30am, after all the paperwork was completed, Taro headed us toward the Islands. Calm seas and no one got sick. It seemed that in no time we had a quadruple hookup on Bonito, which happened nearly every time we moved the boat. The guys really had to work at getting the fish in with a moving boat! This gave them a chance to show off their muscles, amid cheers and laughter. We caught 27 different species (Thank you, Steve for tracking this for us), and everyone got several fish. We caught everything from Tree Fish to Tuna. One of the guys even got the nickname of the Yellowtail Whisperer after catching one Yellowtail and hooking 2 others. We headed in, tired, happy, and full from the great food on the boat. Several of the guys came up during the day to say how much they were enjoying the trip and how much it meant to them. At the end of the day, lots of hugs were given with promises to come back next year. A huge thank you to Aspire Center, AFYMCA, Joe Smith, and Fred Bransletter for helping us find our Warriors. Thank you to Capt. Taro and the crew of the Liberty who bent over backwards to make sure everyone was taken care of. A special thank you to Friends of Rollo, Frank Lopreste, and Jim Bostian, and the SDA Foundation for helping sponsor this trip. Without you, and people like you wanting to make a difference in the lives of these Warriors, these trips wouldn't be possible. grateful! We are so 2
3 2018 Vagabond 10-Day Charter Report By Dwayne Patenaude, Charter Master Captain Mike had given us a call asking if we could move the charter date up one day due to an upcoming doctor s appointment he had to make, and after asking everyone on board if it was OK, they all said yes. This early day would come in handy! We all gathered on Sunday morning, October 14, with the normal anticipation on where we would be going. Guadalupe, Alijos Rocks, the Ridge, looking for big tuna outside the lower banks were all options. The 16 of us loaded our stuff and took off for the 2-hour bait-loading process. Some immediately started rigging while others went into vacation mode (Doing nothing after shutting off the phones!). With hundreds of scoops of great sardines packed onto the boat, off we went with Captain Mike contacting the other boats in his code group to get fishing reports from all over. The Rocks were slow with a, few wahoo and tuna, Guadalupe was not going to happen as the boat needed a very important document from Mexico for permission and it had not been delivered by the time we had departed. Nobody had looked for the big tuna yet on the lower banks due to too warm of water (The sardines will all die when the water gets above 80). The ridge was getting better every day, as reported by the boats down below, so we set a course and settled in for the 2-day travel. Here is where the extra day comes in handy. ALL the boats were heading up the line to come home, meaning the ridge was going to have time to recover from the wahoo trolling. Wahoo become very beat up very quickly and become hard to get with too much boat traffic. Not only will we get it to ourselves but we will have an extra day to put the hurt on the wahoo. As we got to the ridge, it was very obvious we were not going to have a problem with tuna as they were everywhere! They bit everything in the water and the guys up front throwing poppers were having a blast catching one on every cast after a massive explosion! We ended the day with everyone exhausted and moved down to the next spot under the cover of darkness. We woke up to a vacant, well rested wahoo spot and put the gear in the water. Norm Campbell brought a cowbell (Special wahoo lure) and it was obvious that was going to be the hot lure. But David Amieka was not going to be outdone and dropped his Sunset gold Marauder in the wake to have it engulfed just as many times. Tim Macauley tied his Hawaiian green and silver Marauder on Bill Brown s rod and the competition was on! For 2 plus days we whacked the wahoo with those lures. The boat was stopped constantly as Captain Mike expertly used his side scan sonar to hunt up the wahoo. I can not convey how much adrenaline was flowing these 2 days as wahoo fishing is as exciting as it gets as they attack the boat, scream line from one end to the other as everyone did a good job of being polite as their fish would get sawed off or they would fall off the trolling lures. And we had it all to ourselves! When it was all said and done, I think we boated about 109 wahoo and lost that many to boot. It was now time to finish up our tuna amount and look for yellowtail. The tuna did not disappoint as they again attacked the boat with abandon. We had our deckhand competition at the end of the day, with the tourney turning into a sundown popper bite. Massive explosions were seen. They engulfed the poppers being thrown by the crew, with all the passengers on the upper deck screaming words of encouragement. After 30 minutes of fabulous popper fishing, Andrew won again, for the second year in a row, and walked away with the $320 jackpot. The next few days were spent slowly traveling home, looking for Yellowtail. For some reason, the yellows have been hard to locate in Baja the last few years, so we worked our way home, catching a few at every stop but nothing worth sticking around for. We finally called it a trip and had our annual boat Halloween party with, Captain Mike being the MC of our prize giveaway. Games were played, prizes awarded and raffled off, with Jill and Vince ending up with the new Penn reels. The next morning we hit the dock in the dark and the unloading went without a hitch. Goodbyes and hugs were given with "See you next year! heard the most. Thanks to all who came and a special thanks to Norm Campbell for helping to make this year s boat raffle a great one! 5 Bass Slam Tournament By Adam Larson, Club President The Bass Slam started out with 16 anglers signed up. But by Wednesday the weather forecast was looking like we may have to cancel the tournament: heavy rain, possible thunder showers, with the possibility of lightning. We got several calls as to whether the tournament was still on. We decided that as long as there was no small craft advisory or lightning it would be a go. Saturday turned out to be a great day, small swells and light winds. It was a good day for all the anglers. Everyone caught fish, some bigger than others. It was a close tournament, with only one-tenth of a pound separating 3 rd and 4 th place and 2nd and 1st place. Everyone had a good time at the weigh-in. We are looking forward to seeing everyone at our next tournament. 11 CCA San Diego Chapter Banquet CCA would like to invite you to the 2018 CCA San Diego Chapter Banquet, which will be at the Hubbs Seaworld Research Institute in Mission Bay! We are celebrating Sustainability Through Partnership and what better way to celebrate our year than with all of our partners and supporters like yourself. Date: November 10th Cocktail hour will begin at 1 pm, and food will be served at 2 pm. The cost is $50 per person, or $500 for a table. This banquet will give you the opportunity to win great raffle prizes, and will also have both a live and silent auction as well. As an added bonus, we will be offering free tours of the facility and the opportunity to get an up-close look at some of the great things they are doing with the broodstock fish that CCA has helped collect. To purchase tickets online, please visit our Eventbrite site Open Bay Bass Tournament By Dwayne Patenaude Keep your fingers crossed as we will be applying to the Port to do the Open Bay Bass Tournament on Saturday, January 26, Only problem is that the Shelter Island Launch ramp is still not done yet, but it is very close! We anticipate it being done but the construction continues at a snails pace. The seawall is up and the ramp is poured. I went down on Saturday and they were getting ready to pour the top of the ramp concrete (flat area). The docks need to be installed and the safety rails on top of the seawall need to be installed also. If everything falls into place, we will need many volunteers to help us the day of the event, so save the date please! More details to come as the planning progresses. 11
