Farrior, 62, Rancho Santa Fe, California, has been elected and installed into the San Mateo-based California Outdoors Hall of Fame (COHF) by a committee of his peers, the Hall of Fame Circle of Chiefs. Farrior was recognized by the COHF for his volunteer work on behalf of the International Game Fish Association (IGFA) and the Tuna Club of Avalon. He was described as a catalyst in arranging tournaments at fishing piers for the youth of San Diego, as well as the Michael Farrior/IGFA Junior Anglers Tournament, hosted by the Marlin Club of San Diego. He regularly donates fishing reels to the Make-A-Wish Foundation drawings as well as funding fishing trips for military patients recuperating at the San Diego Naval Hospital. Farrior has also dedicated himself to researching and uncovering fishing history to share with anglers in California and around the world bringing it alive for today's junior anglers and generations to come. A long-time member of the oldest fishing club still in existence, the Tuna Club of Avalon, Farrior was appointed historian for the organization and subsequently wrote The History of the Tuna Club In 2012, he was appointed the IGFA s first official historian and will record significant catches, statistics and notable events of the organization. With approximately 350 reels, 60 rods and 250 books (200 of which are collector-quality dating as far back as 1638), Farrior s entire collection is one of the largest in the world. His definitive collection demonstrates the development of saltwater fishing, and includes many items that were custom made by individuals who had performed significant fishing achievements. However, his collection is not limited to just rods and reels; it contains everything needed to saltwater sportfish, including rigging, wood spools of linen fishing line, metal and wood lures of many colors and shapes, plus memorabilia. Farrior has collected bills of trophy fish taken by well-known anglers of the period including Earnest Hemingway, Zane Grey and Charles Holder (one of the founders of the Tuna Club of Avalon). He even has post cards, weight slips and fishing licenses of many of the prominent anglers. In short, Farrior has become the recognized authority and historian of West Coast saltwater sportfishing. He was able to establish that the birth of big-game fishing occurred on the West Coast and the early fishing gear used to battle large bluefin tuna, marlin and swordfish evolved here. The sportfishing ethics and rules used today were originally drafted at the Tuna Club at Avalon on Catalina Island at the turn of the century. Excerpt from Sportfishing Magazine January 15,

2 2018 Awards Banquet By: Debbie Patenaude This years Awards Banquet rivaled any other in the past. Held at the Carlton Oaks Country Club in Santee, we had a huge room, beautiful decorations, great food, a fabulous view of the golf course, and overnight accommodations. This is the night we recognize those San Diego Anglers that have excelled in the sport of fishing in Many outstanding awards were given out. The Men s Angler of the Year, Tournament Angler of the Year, and Skipper of the Year places were awarded to Chad Gierlich. The Ladies Angler of the Year award went to Janice Krause. Our Junior Angler of the Year went to Luke Wiese, while Justin Larson took the Junior Tournament Angler of the Year award! This year, Dwayne Patenaude, Founding Member, Past President, Co-Chair of the OBB, Charter Master, and Secretary of the SDA Foundation, was recognized as Volunteer of the Year. This is also a time when we recognize the changing of our Board of Directors. 4 Day at the Docks By: Debbie Patenaude Another successful Day at the Docks. The big smiles on the kids faces while they were fishing, their laughter, and screams of excitement made it clear that another generation of fishermen got their start this year! The fish in the pens were a little picky at first using bait, but thanks to Hook-Up Baits for their donation, the mackerel put on a good show! The SDA Booth even got a visit from the KUSI news team! A huge thank-you to Jim Medlin, John Gleaves, and all the amazing San Diego Anglers volunteers who showed up from 5:50am set-up, through the day, and those who stayed until 5pm take-down! Lake Morena Campout The first weekend in June is our annual campout! We will be back at Lake Morena Friday, June 1st, through Sunday, June 3rd. To reserve your campsite, please call Tim Macauley, (619) Lake Morena has something for everyone: fishing, hiking, full trailer hookups, tent camping, hot showers (bring quarters), nature programs put on by ranger staff, and evening get-togethers around the campfire. If you don t plan to camp out, come up for the day, join in the activities, and stay for s mores around the campfire. Friday night will feature hamburgers and hot dogs with all the fixings, potato salad, and big chocolate chip cookies at Tim and Jan s campsite, No. 14. Come between 5:00 and 8:00 p.m. Bring your own drinks and feel free to add to the potluck! Saturday features the big horseshoe tournament, beginning at 11:00. Debbie and Tina will again feature a craft project under the trees for the ladies and for the kids. The big potluck on Saturday night will once again have Barbeque Mike at the smoker, cooking tri-tips, chicken and sausages. Each family should bring a side dish to share and their own drinks. Be there Sunday morning for the big waffle breakfast before going home. Where else could you spend the whole weekend with friends for only $54.00! Ticket Sales start at the May meeting. 4

5 Halibut Tournament April 14, 2018 Sam Lindsey, Director of Tournaments The San Diego Anglers Annual Halibut Tournament was held on Saturday, April 14, under fantastic weather conditions: sunny, warm, with building winds. We had Anglers fishing in both bays and off the coast. The attendance was on the light side but those that attended had a great time. Our tournament winners were: Third Place: Dave Hanes with 4.7 pounds, Second Place: John Eaton with 6.3 pounds and First Place Norm Campbell with a 9.3 pounds. Unfortunately our two junior anglers: Luke & Micah Wiese had boat issues that kept them from getting on our leader board but still had a good time. We are looking forward to next month s Yellowtail Tournament starting May 3 rd thru June 3 rd. Gary Smith & Dave the Mission Bay Boat Ramp The fishing for Halibut was a Handful! San Diego Anglers Charters By Dwayne Patenaude Charter Master We still have a few spots on our club charters, 3/4-day, twilight and our new 2-day trip on the Liberty in August. On paper a lot of the charters are full, but do not hesitate to put your name on a wait list if a charter is to your liking. Many times as we approach the charter date, people have to back out as some kind of family function pops up. Even if you are like number 5 or 6 on the waiting list, sign up as sometimes I have to go down a the list pretty far to fill the empty spot. We are still about 5 people short on our Mothers Day, May 13, 3/4-day trip to the Coronado Islands on the San Diego. (Passports or passport cards necessary). If you would like to go, send me an (dwaynesda@juno.com) to jump on board. Also If you are on the trip and have a friend that might want to go, send me an also. Also, when I made up the charter list, I forgot to put a column for phone numbers. If everyone who signed up last month could take a moment to write a phone number after your name on the charter lists, that would be VERY much appreciated as it will keep me from having to hunt up your contact number as the charter approaches. Thanks! If you have signed up for the charters and have not paid, please bring a form of payment to the next meeting (especially the ones in May). As I write this, we are preparing for our first trip of the year on the Vendetta to the Islands (Sun., April 29). They started catching yellows again yesterday, so it looks like our timing might be right! 5

Anglers will be acknowledged and awarded for these catches at monthly membership meetings. 10 San Diego Anglers MAY 2018 MONTH-LONG YELLOWTAIL TOURNAMENT RULES AND ENTRY FORM MAY 3 rd thru June 3 rd, 2018 Tournament channel 72 PAGE 1 OF 2 1. The official starting time of the tournament is 12:01 am on Thursday, May 3 rd, The official ending time of the tournament is 11:59 pm on Sunday, June 3 rd, Boats may depart prior to the official starting time of the tournament. Boats must depart from and return to any port within the county of San Diego. No tournament fishing is allowed prior to the official tournament starting time. All club tournaments are operated on an honor system. 3. The fishing boundaries shall be limited to the waters of the Pacific Ocean within 125 miles of San Diego. 4. During the tournament, fishing can be done from any fishing platform, including Sportfishing boats. 5. Bait may be caught, purchased, or acquired as available prior to the official tournament starting time. Bait may be kept aboard tournament boats, used or transferred at the discretion of the anglers or skippers throughout the tournament. 6. IGFA angling rules will be used for this tournament. Angling rules can be found in the San Diego Anglers Yearbook under General Angling Rules. Anglers are responsible for compliance with all California or Mexican fishing and boating laws and regulations, as applicable. 7. Weight Receipts: It is the responsibility of each entrant to submit all weight receipts signed, witnessed, with time/date stamp to the Club Weighmaster no later than 11:59pm June 3 rd, Weight receipts received after this deadline will be disqualified. Weight receipts can be found on the Club website. Weight receipts can be scanned and ed to Club Weighmaster, or submitted via the online form. More than one weight receipt per angler may be submitted. 8. Species: Yellowtail. 9. Prizes will be awarded in the following Categories: Heaviest Single Yellowtail - 1 st, 2 nd, 3 rd, 4 th and 5 th place for adults; 1 st, 2 nd and 3 rd for juniors. There will be no ties in any categories. When two fish of the same weight are submitted, the first fish submitted by date and time is considered the winner. 10. All anglers are responsible to stay aware of current weather/sea conditions. Monitor NOAA weather radio for info. 11. All tournament anglers must complete, sign and submit a Tournament Entry Form and a COPY OF THEIR CURRENT BOAT INSURANCE POLICY prior to wetting a line in this fishing tournament. Entrants may sign up any time prior to the tournament starting date and time. The entry forms must be turned in to the locations or persons listed on the back of this form. All entrants in the tournament must be current members in good standing or non-members fishing as a guest of a club member. Entry forms can be scanned and ed to Tournament Director with all pertinent signatures, boat insurance info (if applicable), and date/time stamp. By signing the application, Applicant does assume all risks of injury or property damage, and does agree to hold the San Diego Anglers harmless should any injury, death or property damage occur. 12. Failure to comply with any of these rules will result in the offending angler's disqualification from the tournament and possible termination of club membership. 13. Tournament Angler of the Year points will be awarded for this tournament. There will be NO Skipper points awarded for this tournament. 11 MAY 2018 MONTH-LONG YELLOWTAIL TOURNAMENT RULES/ENTRY FORM PROTESTS PAGE 2 OF 2 1. The Protest Committee will be made up of: a. Sam Lindsey b. Adam Larson c. Jim Medlin 2. The Protest Committee has the right to disqualify any angler who exhibits unsportsmanlike conduct. 3. Any protest relative to the weight of a fish, manner of weighing, or the manner of catching/landing the fish must be made prior to the fish being removed from the scale. The protest must be made to the Tournament Weighmaster and Tournament Director at that time. 4. Any protest, except weight, must be filed in writing with the Protest Committee no later than 24 hours after the ending time of the tournament. The protest may be filed with any member of the Protest Committee. 5. The San Diego Anglers take no responsibility for personal injury, death, or property damage resulting from any misconduct, negligence, and adverse weather conditions or otherwise, of any persons or its members at sponsored events and tournaments. 6.
