As an Engineer Officer in the U.S. Marine Corps, he was stationed at Camp Pendleton and quickly discovered the wonders of the blue Pacific. After several years in the military, he returned to college to study counseling psychology; however, the call of the sea was always tugging at his soul and he finally decided to make his livelihood from the sea. He continued his education to become a ship s captain and qualified for a U.S. Coast Guard Master s license in Just five years later, he had saved enough money to buy a boat and start his own maritime charter service. The MV Sea Star became both his boat and his office, where he continues to this day as the owner/operator. The Oceanside Sea Center brings together Captain Joe Cacciola of Sea Star Charters and Captain Ernie Prieto of Chubasco Sportfishing to develop a new landing experience in Oceanside Harbor. The landing will continue to offer traditional open party sportfishing trips with an emphasis on customer service, community involvement and the consistency you deserve. Find out more at 1

2 Susan Johnson Memorial Mission Bay Bass Tournament February 23, 2019 By Sam Lindsey Saturday was a great day for the tournament, it was a sunny and clear day with a mild breeze, and cool, very cool. We had a total of 33 anglers, with 7 being juniors. From all reports the bite was predominantly in the early morning. It was also reported that many, many short were caught and released. We had 11 anglers weigh in bass for an overall total weight of 38.1 of bass. Most were Calicos, with a few Spotties and one legal Sandy. Overall it was a great day on the water and on the beach at the weigh-in. Lots of stories were heard of what was hooked up and what was let go. The results are: Junior s No fish weighed in. Adults 5 th Place Jim Medlin with 2 fish for 3.7 lbs. 4 th Place Cesar Garcia with 3 fish for 4.4 lbs. 3 rd Place Ed Howerton with 3 fish for 4.5 lbs. 2 nd Place Dennis Burlason with 3 fish for 5.5 lbs. 1 st Place Norm Campbell with 3 fish for 6.6 lbs. Jackpot Norm Campbell with a 3.4-lb. Calico I want to thank everyone who entered and those who did not enter but still showed up to help out and support those who did. Our next tournament will be Saturday, April 27, It will be the Halibut Tournament. The entry forms will be in the April Newsletter, On-line and at the April Club meeting. I look forward to seeing even more club members and Guest at our next tournament. Thanks again, to everyone! OBB Fail Dwayne Patenaude, Director of the Open Bay Bass Tournament After rescheduling the 23rd annual Open Bay Bass Tournament (OBB) from Saturday, Feb 2 to Saturday, Feb 16 due to high winds, we were once again ready to go. Friday morning the trucks were all loaded, volunteers all set, delivery vendors all scheduled, and Mother Nature struck again. NOAA has now predicted small craft advisory for Saturday! We did not want to endanger the participants or the volunteers, so after a lengthy meeting on Friday morning, the decision was made to cancel. The only reliable way to contact everyone is by calling, so the arduous task was started with a hastily gathered group. By 8 pm we had contacted every participant, volunteer and vendor with the ugly news of canceling the tourney for 2019 and not rescheduling. We have a very busy schedule, both club and personal, and there was no open time to do this very large task. I guess, to look on the bright side, we will just call it a practice run for next year! 2

4 Lake Morena Campout 2019 By Tim Macauley The first weekend in June is our annual campout! We will be back at Lake Morena Friday, May 31, through Sunday. June 2. To reserve your campsite, please call Tim Macauley, at (619) Lake Morena has something for everyone: fishing, hiking, full trailer hookups, tent camping, hot showers (bring quarters), and evening get-togethers around the campfire. If you don t plan to camp out, come up for the day, join in the activities and stay for s mores around the campfire. Friday night will feature burgers and hot dogs with all the fixings with potato salad, ranch beans, and Jan s big chocolate chip cookies from 5-7pm. Bring your own drinks and feel free to add to the potluck! Saturday features the big horseshoe tournament beginning at 11:00. Debbie and Tina will again feature a craft project under the trees for the ladies and for the kids. The big potluck on Saturday night will again have Barbeque Mike at the Smoker, cooking tri-tips, chicken and sausages. Each family should bring a side dish to share and their own drinks. Come Sunday morning for the big waffle breakfast before going home. Where else could you spend the whole weekend with friends for only $50.00 for members and $55.00 for nonmembers! SDA Foundation Schedule The San Diego Anglers Foundation (SDAF) is always looking for help with all of the community events that is does. Anglers will be acknowledged and awarded for these catches at monthly membership meetings. Weight receipts received prior to the 10th of each month will be published in the monthly newsletter and awards presented at the next monthly meeting. PROCEDURE TO APPLY FOR AWARDS: Submit all weight receipts within 30 days of catch. 1. Weigh your catch. Any scale known to be accurate may be used. 2. Complete a San Diego Anglers weight receipt.
