Some of you may have read a few of his articles in Pacific Coast Sportfishing Magazine Bob Hoose, of Mesa, California, has been in the fishing business for over 25 years. One of his first jobs was working on the water for Newport Bait Company. Here, Bob spent his summers selling live bait to the private and sport boats heading out to target albacore, tuna and yellowtail. It was through these contacts that Bob earned a deckhand job on one of the local Newport Landing six-pack charters. After a summer of working the deck on the charter boat, Bob was offered another deckhand job on a 72' Bertram, the "TREASURE CHEST". On the Bertram, Bob traveled down to Cabo San Lucas and followed the Black & Blue Marlin Tournament circuit for two seasons. It was in Cabo that Bob was trained by some of Cabo's best crews in the art of targeting large billfish on lures and live baits. After two seasons in Cabo, Bob returned to Newport Beach and was offered a job managing the tackle department at Bisbee's Sportfishing Headquarters. As store manager, Bob worked with all the local tackle manufacturers and outfitted a steady stream of brand-new yachts for local and long-range offshore fishing. When Bob Bisbee retired and moved to Cabo, Bob went to work for 7Strand at their long Beach manufacturing office. At 7Strand, Bob took on a West Coast marketing and sales role and worked directly with Bill Buchanan in promoting 7Strand lures for the West Coast offshore fishery. When 7Strand was bought by Pure Fishing-Bob went to work for Pure Fishing, where he worked as their Saltwater Field Service Manager for the west coast. Bob has also, more recently, worked for Penn. Come and join us for a very informative evening!

2 Susan Johnson Memorial Tournament On February 25, 2017 we had a great showing of 33 adults and 3 juniors that turned out within the confines of Mission Bay in search of the elusive 3-fish sack of 14" minimum size limit bass. The club kicked in an additional $20 per angler to really sweeten the pot and make for some fantastic payouts for this event! The heavy rains of this season took a breather and we were greeted with fantastic weather and a strong outgoing tide. Everyone enjoyed a great day on the water and some Subway sandwiches and refreshments to close out the afternoon. Once the dust settled, Tony Souza continued his hot hand from the 2017 OBB Championship to claim top prize honors; however, Michael Raven walked away with the most cash in his pockets from his second-place finish combined with the jackpot for the largest single bass of 2.7 lbs! Justin Larson took 1 st for a junior, with a 1.7lb Spotted Bay Bass. Great job to all, and come out to join us for the Halibut tournament on April 15th. Welcome aboard those new members that participated: Frank Lococo, Joseph Gonsalves, Carolina Gonzalez, Caesar and Louis Garcia, Ty and Luke Wiese, and Michael Simmons. Thanks and Welcome! A big thank-you to Joe Tickey for arranging the Subway Sandwich connection, and to John Otto and Gary Smith for setting up the station, picking up the sandwiches, and tallying up the beginning weights so the Tournament Master could fish. Charters We had quite a flurry of signups at the last meeting, and thank you very much! We still have a few spots on some of the ¾-day trips, but most of them are full and have standby lists. The twilight charters still have lots of room, with the trips starting in May. If you have signed up for any of the trips at the last meeting and have not paid, please pay for them at the upcoming April meeting. Now all we need is a few fish to show up!! Charter on ¾-Day Boat Liberty (Coronados) I have talked with Captain Taro and Doug Kern about chartering the Liberty at the Fred Hall Show Long Beach. It looks like we can get a Sunday Charter for $150 per person (club member price) plus permits. If we can get enough people (32), I will book the trip. I do not have a date yet as I want to see if there is plenty of interest in the idea before I commit to the charter. If you can t make the meeting, shoot me an to let me know at dwaynesda@juno.com.

3 Tony Reyes 6-Day Midriff Island Trip September 17-23, 2017 Last year I put together a 6-day Midriff Island trip on the mother ship Tony Reyes out of San Felipe for a bunch of my fishing friends. There has been a lot of interest to fish the Midriff Islands here at the SD Anglers club, so I got the same dates as last year. The 107 steel-hull boat, the Tony Reyes, is named after Tony Reyes Sr., a fishing legend in San Felipe. The boat is now run by his son, Tony Reyes Jr. The boat can take 27 anglers for the 9 pangas she carries, but last year we went limited load and took only 18 anglers. She has more than enough air-conditioned staterooms for 18 people. This made for a fantastic trip. We had plenty of room on the boat and in the galley, and by going with only 18 anglers we fished only 2 anglers per panga instead of three. The cost is $1,870 per person and includes all meals, all drinks, fish filleting and Mexican fishing license. Your panga guide, cooks and crew get tipped extra. Drinks include water, sodas and beer. You are welcome to bring anything different on board to drink if you wish to. The meals alternate between Mexican and American and are very good. If you have a special diet, let us know so we can let Tony know. It is about a 5-hour drive to San Felipe from San Diego. I usually go down on Friday, and I will always stay the night the boat returns to port. That way I get a nice 9-day vacation. I recommend you get there at least by Saturday. If you want, I can reserve rooms at the El Capitan in San Felipe. Last year the rooms cost $55 per night with 2 people per room ($27.50 each). Otherwise you are on your own for lodging. Total trip cost is around $2,300 after you figure in the charter, tips, rooms, gas, insurance, travel visas and in-town meals. You will need a current passport and a Mexican travel visa to go on this trip. Everyone is checked on the boat by Mexican authorities. We have 10 people booked now, so there are only 8 spaces left on the charter. For those who expressed interest or signed up, please, bring a $500 deposit. I am starting to collect the money now. 4 As most of you know by now, the San Diego Anglers continues to expand its charitable mission by establishing the San Diego Anglers Foundation. The Foundation is set up as a 501(C)(3) non-profit organization in order to expand its charitable fishing programs. Would you like to help volunteer or make a donation, then please contact Louis Almeida, Jr., Dwayne Patenaude or Jill Broadfoot. Also, please make sure to visit our website at to learn more about us or make an online donation. Price, approximately $1,950 per person. Date is yet to be set, hoping for end of July or August. If interested, call Louis Almeida, Jr. for more information, at (760) Tournament of Champions (Top 25) Every year we invite back the top 25 teams from January's Bay Bass Tournament for another crack at $1500. We used to have a winner-take-all format, but we recently have broken it down to 1st, 2nd, and 3rd place taking home the cash ($750, $500, $250). This year's date that will fit into the busy schedule and not interfere with Easter, Day at the Docks, and the Sierra trout opener will be Saturday, April 22. The format will be the same: two-man teams, 3 fish per boat with an optional jackpot for the largest bass of the event. Cost will be the same, $145 per team. The only thing that will be different is where it takes place. Due to the scheduled Shelter Island Launch Ramp redevelopment, we will not be able to use the ramp. The only usable launch ramp will be in Chula Vista. We will work out the details and get them out to all the participants soon.

5 2017 DAY AT THE DOCKS This annual event is located at the sportfishing landings in Point Loma and is on Sunday, April 9, 2017, from 9am to 5pm. Come tour the sportfishing fleet, ride on a boat, learn from the experts, and check out the gear. One of the great fishing shows in San Diego, and best of all, it s FREE. How many remember the first fish they caught? My first fish came from surf fishing. I remember we first had to dig in the sand to catch the sand worms for our bait. If you came across some grunion eggs, you knew there were worms nearby. Come help a young angler catch their first fish by volunteering for a short shift at the Kids Fishing Pen while you enjoy your Day at the Docks. Etch a permanent memory in a kid s life as they catch a slimy, wiggling mackerel, and the smiles they give back, you will not forget. Before or after your 2-hour shift, check out your last chance before summer to score on some great deals on fishing equipment and terminal tackle. There will be food, seminars, cooking demos and of course the FREE Kids Fishing Pens. John Delaurentis is retiring from running this program. Thank you, John, for your years of service to the kids. You can take it back anytime you want. John Gleaves is attempting to fill his shoes and keep this wonderful program going as the San Diego Anglers run these Kids Fishing Pens. As always, we will have our club information booth located right in front of the Fisherman s Landing Pier. At the booth we encourage passersby to learn about our club and hopefully become new members. Cold water & sodas are provided for the volunteers at the booth area. Bring your lunch or eat at the various food booths. We need your help. If you have not already ed me to volunteer for one of the 2- hour time slots, please make sure to sign up at the next club meeting on April 5th or John Gleaves at : jsimongleaves@gmail.com. The kids have a great a time, and the more volunteers we have the better. Be sure to stop by.
