1 ~~~~Bluewater Bulletin~~~~ August, 2017 San Diego Rod and Reel Club (760) Picture of the Month Club Meeting August 3 rd, 2017 Big Fish Seminar $1.00 Fish Tacos Happy Hour starts at 6:00 Meeting begins at 7:00 Dorado caught under the paddies with the Yellowtail. I would like to thank the volunteers who came out and helped with Crystal Pier and Captain Ron s fishing event. We would not have been able to do all of volunteering we do if it wasn t for everyone donating their time. Hello FCM s, President Tom Gruber The year is just racing along. Here we are at Big Fish Tournament time with the seminar on August 3rd at the Bali Hai with the one and only Pepe s Fish Tacos! The fishing is starting to heat up for the first time since I can remember. I don t remember the last time all 3 species of the Triple B tournament were caught, and not just by one angler, but four. A huge shout out to Junior Angler Marco Mouritzen who also caught all three, plus a couple of yellowtail!! Way to go, Marco!! There are a lot of Yellowfin tuna down south; we just need a little push to get them up into our waters. The Bluefin are still being seen, but still with lock jaw. There have also been a few As Big Fish approaches we will need help with the two weigh stations. If you have a little spare time, let us know. Our next event is Shelter Island Pier on August 12th. Our club assists with rigging rods and keeping score of what the kids caught. For some of these kids, it is the first time they have ever fished, and the smiles you see make the day worth it. Lastly, your club is in the need of a few good people who are willing to get on the board. Several positions will be opening up and we definitely need new blood on the board! Hello FCMs, VP Bill Renick The Lindo Lakes event (Kids fishing Derby) was a big success. The kids caught a lot of fish and we served a lot of hot dogs. I am looking forward to next year! By the time you read this, the Crystal Pier kids fishing event will be history. The usual gang 1

2 will have been there serving pizza, untangling lines, and helping kids fish. I am sorry if some of you missed it it s always a great even! Next up will be two kids fishing events and you are all invited. We will be recruiting future fishers (girls and boys). The first of these will be the Shelter Island Pier event on the 12th of August. Typically, we assist with the gear (I have tied on a lot of hooks), and sign score cards. The second will be the Chula Vista Harborfest on the 19th of August. We will be teaching kids to cast and will have a lot of fun. Prizes will be given to all (nearly all) of the kids and we get to see the festival. Bali Hai Restaurant 2230 Shelter Island Dr San Diego, CA Weigh Master Curt Itogawa The Club s Bass, Barracuda, and Bonito (Triple B) fishing tournament was a success with all the boats catching some fish. There were two boats that caught all three species, and they took the first two places in the tournament. Gary Mouritzen, fishing with his son, Marco, trolled lures to catch most of their fish. They went the extra mile to fish the Coronado Islands, as well as Rex Finney in his boat. They all managed to catch the fabled Three B s. This is something that has not happened in recent memory. But then, at our age, we can t remember what we had for breakfast The water condition along the coast was a dirty green, but there were fish biting. Tim Foote had the Calico bass biting in the Point Loma kelp, and then he went outside to looking for Bonito, but found a Barracuda to give Gordie Howe the third place in the tournament. I was fishing with Tony Belandres in my boat. I caught a heavy weight Barracuda off the point and Tony caught a nice Sand Bass off Imperial Beach. I hooked a heavy fish while fly lining a sardine. It made some long runs, took me around my boat, and then I pulled the hook after a 15 minutes battle. I hate these big mystery fish that I do not get to see. I have a feeling it was a large White Sea Bass. As they say, That is fishing! Wow, how about Jr. Angler Marco Mouritzen catching a Bass, a Barracuda, and a Bonito. He also caught two Yellowtails. This makes Gary a proud father! The results of the tournament are as follows: 1st. Place: Rex Finney; 2.06 lbs. Calico Bass, 6.98 lbs. Barracuda, 4.50 lbs. Bonito, for a total weight of pounds. 2nd. Place: Gary Mouritzen: 2.42 lbs. Calico Bass, 3.70 lbs. Barracuda, 4.70 lbs. Bonito, for a total weight of pounds. 3rd. Place: Gordie Howe; 1.80 lbs. Sand Bass, 3.70 lbs. Barracuda, for a total weight of 5.51 pounds. 1st. Place Junior Angler: Marco Mouritzen; 1.44 lbs. Calico Bass, 2.62 lbs. Barracuda, 3.72 lbs. Bonito, for a total weight of 7.78 pound. 3 Clothing Master Tony Belandres COOL THREADS, MAN! We re all in agreement that this is a pretty toasty and muggy summer we ve got going, considering where we live and fish. But we have the clothes that will help you keep your cool and be cool, too! We have the very lightweight Eddie Bauer vented fishing shirts in performance UPF 50 or cotton, long or short sleeves, and in several very attractive colors. People are also ordering the dressier camp shirts with the woven-in leaf pattern, available in five colors. The ladies version is a bit shorter than the men s, and more form-fitting. These two types of shirts can be embroidered with our logo and your name, team name, and/or boat name, and will be waiting for you at the very next meeting. For those who are serious about both sun protection and comfort, we have UPF 40 long-sleeve, high-neck performance Tees available at the clothing table in both dark and light blue, in every size from XS to 2X. They are cool, stretchy, breathable, and will protect you from the sun all day long. While you re at it, pick up a club ball cap to shield your eyes. Get a deal, protect your health, and stay cool! It s getting close to last call for that coat, it s about to make that last lonely trip to Goodwill The raffle table was quite busy at the last meeting. Good Stuff! Hello FCM'S, Raffle Master Ellie Duchene The July raffle was a big success. Members and guests seem to like the target opportunity raffle. Mary's homemade goods are always a big hit - thank you Mary! Dennis got some luck and won the reel. The jewelry did well, thanks to Rhonda and Sharon. I'm hearing that the next meeting, which is the Big Fish Seminar, will have a huge raffle and silent auction items; so please plan on attending. I always love seeing everyone. We hear that our baker is experimenting with espresso powder and chocolate Check in at the raffle table to see what shows up this time. Our membership prices are still the same and we don t anticipate an increase for If you need a new badge, please let me know. Remember in order to turn in weight receipts that count towards awards or get sports points you must be a member in good standing at the time you submit your receipts or participate in a tournament. For the Big Fish Tournament, please take some pictures (Action and Trophy) of your catches and then send them to me so I can post them in the next newsletter. You don t have to give away your secret spot, but try to give a small detail about the event. The Triple B tournament, as you read earlier, was a big success. I have been a member since 1997 and I do not recall anybody catching all 3 species for the event. 20 years later (really?! Wow, that s hard to chew on!!!) we get 4 anglers getting all 3. My son Marco and I went to the islands to catch our triples, most of which were done by trolling lures or slow trolling deans and a Wax Wing! We trolled a Black & Purple jet head, a plain cedar plug, a skirted cedar plug and an XRap all 4 lures got hooked up on! Then we slow trolled sardines and a Wax Wing yes, you heard correctly. Try slow tolling a Wax Wing and see the action; I even gave mine an extra pull every once in a while. Sure enough, I scored my Barracuda on that (no short bit allowed!). Marco got his Calico on a Sardine, so we were game-on! Now we were down to needing a Barracuda for Marco and a Bass for me. I broke out the Hookup Baits and scored my Calico within 15 minutes, along with some rock fish and smaller Calico s. Now it was time to get Marco a Barracuda, so I broke out the Rapala s and XRaps, trolled around and caught a Yellowtail that bullied him a bit, and then he finally got a legal Barracuda. High Fives all around the boat!!! We then set the boat up for me to attempt to catch the side pot Halibut, but all I got was a large school of Calicos. Marco and I had fun with the double rigged Hookup Baits it was almost comical how many we were catching!!! Most were legal sized fish too! It was a great day on the water. Marco even came to me later that night and said, Hey Dad, great day of fishing! See you at the Big Fish Seminar, and be sure to ask me for a free blue raffle ticket by mentioning my fish story.
