Bluewater Bulletin August, 2009 Meeting: August 4th, 09 Fish Tacos and the seminar starts at 6:15pm At the Bali Hai From the Helm, President Lou Duchene Hello FCM's Here we go! The season has started and it's a mixed bag. The fish are up and down, you just have to be in the right place at the right time - if you are GAME ON. The tuna stuck there noses up in our area and said, We are early and the SDRRC's tournament on, so we went back south for a couple more weeks. We will be back in local waters later we will see you then, Charlie Tuna. Your board is working hard to put together the Big Fish Tournament. It is tough out there; the economy is tight and a lot of our regular supporters have cut way back or withdrawn. It's tough, but we will have a great tournament nonetheless. If you can help, please contact one of your board members. San Diego Rod and Reel Club The Big Fish Seminar kicks off Tuesday, August 4th at the new outdoor venue at the Bali Hai. Start time will be at 6:15 PM. This will be for the early bird sign-ups, the regular meeting, Pepe's FREE fish tacos (while they last), a Mystery speaker who you will greatly enjoy, and we will bring you up to date on some very important issues. Plus, don t forget, a Great raffle is always had at the seminar! Remember - August 6:15 pm. Be there and be sure to bring a guest; tell them you will treat them to some great fish tacos. See you then and bring the whole gang! Lou Weigh Master: By: Tim Foote The next tournament will be the BIG FISH, August 15th. A lot of work has been done to put the tournament together, so I hope everyone will join in I received a lot of new weight receipts, including one from myself. I caught a 4.9 lb sand bass in San Diego Bay on 6 lb test, using an orange and brown Fish Trap with lots of Uni Goop. I was fishing with my family for father s day. We finally have two first fishes of the year. Gary Mouritzen caught a 6.25 lb Yellowtail at the Coronados during the Yellowtail Tournament and was the only one to turn in a weight receipt for his catch. You snooze, you lose. Gail Ross caught the first Albacore of the year for the club, a 16 pounder at the 295 spot. She used a sardine and caught the Longfin on 25# test line. She also caught a 5.44 lb yellowtail. Steve Ross sent in receipts for an lb yellowtail and a lb albacore. Harry Okuda caught a lb White Sea Bass at San Clemente Island. That may be a tough record to beat. Lan Tran Okuda caught a lb White Sea Bass at San Clemente Island as well. They both used squid on 50# test line. Give me a call if you have a weight receipt to hand in ( ), mail it to me or bring it to the meeting. Hook em and Weigh em! Tim Foote 1

Tournament Master: Fox Ludwig I think everybody spent a lot of money on fuel for very few fish for the Tuna tournament, but it definitely was a beautiful day on the water. The sun block was definitely needed! Congratulations to Andy Redding for his big Albacore and DJ Ludwig for her nice yellowtail for that side pot. Our next tournament is the Big Fish tournament, I know Billy will have a lot of big prizes coming up for the big fish seminar on Tuesday August 4th, which will help getting all our gear ready to land that big fish. The water has definitely warmed up and the fish are moving up the line within small boat range. If you need some fishing club members on your boat, or need a boat to go on, please contact me at born2fish4ever@cox.net or call me at (619) Remember, tight lines and sharp hooks, Fox Clothing Master Lori Byron Look good during the Big Fish Tournament while you sport the club s logo on a variety of hats, tanks, T;s and jackets. What better way to keep the sun out of your eyes than with one of our fire hats! They come in a variety of colors for you to choose from. If the trip out gets chilly, you better have one of our jackets on. Then, as the morning sun heats up, even out that farmer tan with one of our tank tops! You re going to look great out there while showing your pride of our great club. See you on the water and it better be in our clothing! Lori Raffle Master: Billy Roach MIA Membership: Daryl White Hello everyone, it was great seeing you all at the July meeting. We had a great meeting with over 60 members and 12 guests in attendance. I noticed that we had a few members who didn t stop by the membership table to sign in for the meeting. Doing so lets us know how many people are attending the meeting and plan accordingly. I ve tried to make the sign in list easier to navigate to, and I will continue trying to make improvements. Also, did you remember your badge? We ve had some nice prizes in the badge raffle lately. Wearing your badge helps our new members and guest to know who you are and you get the raffle is free. During the July meeting we had 2 new members join the SDRR club. Please join me in welcoming Alex Williamson and Paul Coomes to the club. Be sure to introduce yourselves at the next meeting and say Hi when you see them on the water. With these new members, our membership list is now up to 114 active members. We will continue to do new and innovative things to draw members to the club. 2

One of the things I ve been telling people about the club is how it is a great way to hook up with people who are looking for people to fish with. If you are a member with a boat and you are heading out to put fish in the box, and you are looking for someone to head out with, look to your fellow club members. If you are that member who is willing to pitch in for gas and bait to go on a run with, let us know. Sharing some info will enable all of us to spend some more time on the water. Did you happen to pick up a Boat List at the membership table? Each month I will have an updated list of the different boats in the club. On the list I m including the MMSI numbers of those members who have it. If you have a boat and want to share your DSC contact number, it to me at daryl@sandiegorodandreel.com and I will add it to the list. If you don t have a DSC MMSI number, you can sign up for one at y/mmsi.asp or home.php Well, that s it for this month. Let me know if there is any other information that you would like for me to put together and I ll get it going. See you on the water and keep them hooked up. Daryl White Big Fish Director Hector Lopez It s that time of the year again. The San Diego Rod and Reel Club s 26th Annual Big Fish Tournament is coming up and the timing is good since the tuna fishing has started to take off, along with a few Marlin showing up. This is going to be a great tournament with some great prizes! Please plan to join us for the Big Fish Tournament Seminar which will be held at the Bali Hai Resort at 6:15 pm on Tuesday, August 4, The seminar will be in place of our August club meeting. Pepe will have his Famous Fish Tacos free for everyone attending. Friends and guests are welcome at the seminar and for the tournament. The Seminar boasts our best raffle of the year, and it is the best time to sign up for the tournament. The proceeds from the Seminar raffle are used to finance the saltwater fishing trips we sponsor for underprivileged children, youth groups and children of deployed military personnel in our community. The Tournament itself takes place on August 15-16, The mandatory Captain s Meeting is Friday evening, August 14th, and fishing begins at midnight on August 15th. Final weigh-in will be at 10:00 am on August 16th, followed by the banquet and awards ceremony at 12:00 noon at the Bali Hai Resort. Tournament prizes include trips for two to the East Cape for first place in each of the three categories, Marlin, Tuna and IGFA. Second and third place in each category will win custom rods and reels. The tournament is open to all fishermen, and the entry fee is $75 per person. Side pots will pay out 100%. If you don t have a boat and want to join someone that does, let one of the board members know, and we might be able to hook you up with a captain. Hector Editor s Corner by Gary Mouritzen There are a lot of fish out there right now as far South as 120 miles and to the North of the 182. There have also been reports of Marlin, with the first of the year being caught just a couple weeks ago. This year s Big Fish Tournament looks like it s going to give the weigh stations a lot to work with!!! It almost doesn t matter which species to target, because they are all out there biting the same lures and eating the same bait. So, be sure to sign up. In the mean time Get Bent! Gary 3

ANDY REDDING S TOURNAMENT REPORT One Fat Albert 7/11 The tale of Fat Albert and Mr. Toad We were in the water and left the bait barge by 12:05. The plan was to fish the 1010 Trench and then work back in towards the Double 220 and the Upper 500. The run out was beautiful, with the ¾ moon showing through the high cloud cover. The seas were running maybe 2-3 feet, and the wind was blowing 5 kts or less. We were able to make about 15 knots comfortably, both ride-wise and visibility/safety wise. By 5:30 am we had lines in the water and began to troll just a few miles above the Not more than ten minutes after we started, I spotted a school of breaking tuna. AWESOME! Or so I thought. The fish sunk out as fast as we saw them. Now would be a good time to mention that fishing turned out to be slow this day. The minutes dragged into hours. Literally. We were dragging a daisy-chain smorgasbord of black and purple all though the morning. We had black and purple daisy s, a black and purple feather, a black and purple cedar plug, and even a couple of black and purple mini jet heads. Match the hatch, baby! NOT!!! Eventually the sun did break through, so we switched up the spread to include a lot of bright colors. We had made our original loop of the 1010 to the Double 220 to the Upper 500 and were now heading back out westward toward the 1010 again. Eventually we spotted a couple of kelps. As we trolled towards one of the kelps, we suddenly saw tuna bombing through the water. Big looking tuna. And not breaking the water, but just motoring along. We swung a large arc around the kelp and set up to make another pass at it. As we passed it, Mike saw a huge bait ball under it. Just after passing the bush, the starboard outrigger with the pink and white mini jet goes off. HOOK-UP! I grab it as John clears lines. Then the port outrigger with the blue rapala goes off. Mike grabs it, but somehow the fish comes unbuttoned. Bummer! I fight my fish, and it s putting up a good fight. I get the fish (still hot) up to gaff and John sticks it like a pro. He heaves this fish over the rail, and we re all looking at a really big albacore. The digital scale reads out 42 lbs and change. COOL! High fives all around. At the next patty we pick up another Yellowtail on the mini cedar plug. It goes 8 lbs. Eventually we find a pretty thick patty. We troll past and Mike sees a big Yellowtail under it. First pass with the trollers and nothing happens. We circle around and make another pass. This time Mr. Toad comes out to check out the spread one monster Yellowtail cruising along just inches behind our pink and white feather. I ve never seen a Yellowtail cruise along like that. Shortly he peels off and heads back to the safety of the patty. We cranked in the trollers, head back up swell and set up to do a live bait drift. Brandon Hayward came to our Rod and Reel Club meeting to talk about fishing shoulder hooked his bait for better presentation. Taking his suggestion, I grabbed a nice lively dean and pinned it on. We drift past the patty maybe 15 to 20 yards off of it. As our baits come in line with the patty, Mr. Toad leaves his hiding spot underneath and suddenly the water where my bait was boils and explodes. GAME ON! The big fish started peeling line off my reel. In no time I was past my 50 yard top shot and the braided line was singing off my reel. By this time the boat had drifted quite a ways from the patty, I could see my line heading towards the patty, Rod tip up, I added just a little more pressure, he stuffed his head in under the bush, the added pressure of the boat being pushed by the wind was too much, and suddenly POP, Mr. Toad was off. The drags were set right, I played the fish well. I just couldn t understand it. I reeled in my line and then the cause of the failure was clear There, I remember that I had been fishing 12 lb fluorocarbon leader. What was I thinking? In my haste to get a bait on that fish, I had grabbed the wrong rig. Ugh!!! I had just lost what would have been the jackpot fish for the side pot in the tourney. Then, the 8 pound Yellowtail had been beaten out by a mere 33 seconds left to go when another club member came running up to weigh a bigger fish for the side pot. Thanks a lot DJ! Andy Redding

Photo Gallery for August, 2009 Bob Woodard Jr. Was with my cousin and was sworn to secrecy by the devil himself on our location. We had a 37 a 44 and a 50, all at night on live squid! On another after Ghost fishing, he sent me this message: my big is 48.4 we got a on the boat I was running today. No pictures sent on that one, but I got some filets for proof! Donald Crain in Texas, titled Too Hot To Fish In the AC and in the shade, catching fish. We had too many fish in the tank and some had to come out. It was impossible to catch them with the net, so I rigged up a rod and went at them. After I caught the two biggest ones, the bite shut off. Fish aren't as stupid as we make them out to be. Fox and DJ It was a great trip!!!!!! Check out these Dorado, Fox's is 24 lbs and mine is 26 lbs. It was so awesome! These were caught 120 miles south of San Diego. We caught lots of yellow tail also, but my camera battery died. So, no pictures of the yellowtails :(

HECTOR S EAST CAPE TRIP My wife and I went down to the East Cape with Chris Kugel, his wife and another couple from Long Island right after Lou and Ellen came back from Rancho Buena Vista. I told my wife it was just a trip to relax and lay back and not do much. She became suspicious when I was spending too much time packing in my workshop! She wanted to know why I was taking long tubes and several bags of gear, which amounted to 3 times more than our regular bags. So, being the smart guy that I am, I said maybe I can sneak in a couple of days for fishing. Well, she soon found out it was a tournament and I was in hot water! Not only that, but we soon found out how much it cost for carrying extra heavy fishing gear on planes nowadays!! Well, to make a long story short, I spent a few days fishing and we saw each other in the late afternoons. My wife managed to have a good time and said she will join me next year. On the first day we fished inshore and caught lots of baby Rooster fish. They were boiling all over. The biggest was about 21 pounds. We also caught some pompano. On the second day I caught a 350 pound The third day fishing was very slow and we decided to go outside to look for tuna. We found the porpoise about 50 miles out! We managed to catch about a dozen tunas between 15 and 25 pounds. At about 3:00 pm we hooked two large tunas. We lost one right away. For the second tuna hooked, a member of our team fought it for about 45 min. Then I took over and fought it for about 1 hour and 15 minutes and we lost it at gaff!!! The weight of the tuna was estimated by the captain to be around 175 pounds. We were sure to have won the tournament with that fish!!! There was silence in the boat for a while on the way back and after several Pacifico's, we decided what the heck, that's why they call it fishing and not catching! By the way, the name of our team was "Nosotros Chupamos" definition - "We Suck"!!
