Shri. P. K. Pahari, Special Officer, Deshapran FH inaugurated the programme and highlighted on safety & security during fishing and the facilities Sea Safety programme at Dash Mile

5 4 available in the fishing vessel in connection with security of the fishing boat. Shri. Abhijit Dasgupta, Station Commandant, Coast Guard, Freserganj was present in the programme at Dash mile, where he described the legal requirements for fishing in Indian water, conservation of marine fisheries, life saving equipments etc. State Coordinator, NETFISH described on safety and security at sea, importance of registration & licensing of fishing vessels, use of different life saving equipment such as life jacket, life buoy, life raft, Distress Alert Transmitter (DAT) machine etc., VHF, HF & MF transmission system, different communication measures during distress, rules of the road, marine signals etc. Essential training materials were also provided to the participants. The programme was very useful for the trainees, as these awareness is not only very essential for safe fishing but also for safe navigation of boats and therefore the skippers who attended the training appreciated NETFISH for conducting such a programme. SCO explained about the use of GPS in fishing and marking fishing ground. Shri. B. Thavudu, Programme Coordinator, DFYWA explained about the significance of handheld GPS in Motorized boats which are going for fishing with very limited quantity of fuel. Mr. Nagaraju from M/s. GARMIN Company explained about the different navigational devices used in fishing vessels. The available models of handheld GPS which can be operated with battery were introduced to the Tuna fishing boat owners and a demonstration of operation of GPS devices was also done. The fishermen then operated the device themselves and clear their doubts in marking route and fishing grounds. Hands on training programme on Value Added fishery Products was conducted at Mangamaripeta on 29 th June About 30 beneficiaries including fisherwomen, fish traders, wet fish vendors and the members of Small Fish Producers Society attended the programme. Shri. Arjili dasu, Executive Secretary, DFYWA explained about the importance of the programme and the demand of ready to eat fishery products at markets. Shri. P. Hanumantha Rao, SCO NETFISH described about the need of hands on training to produce value added fishery products. Shri. M. Shaji, Deputy Director, RD, MPEDA Visakhapatnam explained about the need to maintain the hygiene and sanitation and the demand of ready to eat fishery products in the markets. He also suggested to popularize the product with a brand name as Mangamaripeta Fishery Products. The fisherwomen were actively participated in the training programme and

8 7 finally prepared the tasty fish cutlets and fish balls. The economic benefit was also studied by calculating the cost of raw materials and the value of finished products. TAMIL NADU NORTH Along Northern coastal regions of Tamil Nadu, 15 awareness were conducted during the month, as briefed below. 9 Cuddalore PPC Cuddalore PPC Pazhaiyar SMP/FQM/CSF Poombuhar GPS Poombuhar Sea Safety Pazhaiyar SMP/FQM/CSF 30 In Poombuhar, a GPS training programme was conducted in association with member NGO MSSRF on 28 th June 2018 which was attended by 30 participants including drivers, boat owners and boat labours. The trainees were made aware on the functions of GPS, various GPS receivers, GPS accuracy, GPS signal reception, how to record a waypoint, how to navigate to the recorded waypoints, how to use GPS waypoints in rescue situations, function of proximity alarm, troubleshooting etc. Also the trainees were explained about latitude, longitude and how it relates to the degree, minutes and seconds of GPS coordinates. On 29 th of the month, a Sea Safety programme was conducted at Poombuhar with the coordination of MSSRF in which 30 fishers and fish workers attended. The trainees were made aware about the importance of personal safety, and demonstrated the safety equipments and how to manage the emergency situation. The trainees gained the knowledge about the safety equipments and they requested NETFISH to give lifesaving apparatus in subsidized rate. During the month, 250 numbers of plastic shovels and one square mesh cod end were distributed to the beneficiaries at Pazhaiyar fishing harbour as fishermen aid material. More than 300 participants including NSS Volunteers from S. N. College Kollam, TKM collage, Kollam and Pakkulam NSSHSS attended the programme. Shri. S. Venugopal, Vice President, Jilla Panchayath inaugurated the harbour clean-up programme. The plastic waste collected during the clean-up programme was given to Suchithwa sagaram team for shredding. Dr. Arul B. Krishna, SP, Kollam inaugurated the awareness meeting conducted as part of the celebration and Smt. Sangeetha N. R., State Coordinator, NETFISH proposed the vote of thanks. Harbour clean-up at Thankasserry NETFISH MPEDA in association with Neendakara Coastal Police and Alappad grama Panchayath celebrated World Ocean Day by arranging a harbour clean-up programme at Azheekkal fishing harbour on 8 th June About 200 members including NSS Volunteers, fish workers and coastal people actively participated in the clean-up programme. They were also passed the message on importance of keeping the beach and sea free of plastic. The collected plastic waste was sent to Suchithwa sagaram shredding unit. As part of the celebration a rally was also conducted to the harbour via Azheekkal.

14 Munambam Sea Safety Munambam NFDB sponsored Square Mesh Conversion training Chettuva SMP/FQM/CSF Chettuva SMP/FQM/CSF Munambam PPC Munambam PPC Vypeen Sea Club Programme Edavanakkad PPC Edavanakkad PPC 30 To create awareness among the sea going fishermen regarding the necessicity of life saving equipments in fishing boats NETFISH conducted an awareness programme on Sea Safety on 13 th June 2018 at Munambam fishing harbour. Dr. Joice V.Thomas, CE, NETFISH took class on basic life saving equipments, navigation equipments, navigation signals etc. During the programme 81 Life jackets were also distributed to fishing boats. Sri P.P. Girish Chairman, Fishing boat Owner s and Operator s Co ordination Committee Munambam, Sri. Sudhas Thayat President, Munambam Yanthravalkrutha Matsyabandhana Pravarthaka Sangham and Sri. P.X. Stanley President, Fishing Boat Operators Relief Association also participated in the programme. Sea Safety programme at Munambam Distribution of Life jackets As part of the popularization of the square mesh cod ends in fish trawl boats, NETFISH organized skill development training programme on square mesh cod ends fabrication to net menders at Munambam, on 19 th June 2018 with the funding of National Fisheries Development Board (NFDB), Hyderabad and technical assistance of ICAR- CIFT, Kochi. Shri. T. Dola Sahankar I.O.F.S., Director (Marketing) MPEDA inaugurated the training programme. Shri K. Sivarajan, Deputy Director (SSP), MPEDA delivered the introductory speech. Shri. Noby P. S., Technical Officer, ICAR- CIFT and Shri. Binu P.J. President, Trawl net Workers Welfare Association, Munambam offered felicitations. Dr. Joice V Thomas, CE NETFISH welcomed the gathering and State

15 14 Coordinator Shri. Santhosh N.K proposed vote of thanks. Fifty net menders participated in the training programme. After the inaugural session, Shri. Noby P.S., Technical Officer, CIFT showed the technique of conversion of Diamond mesh to square mesh cod end to the trainees. Later on each trainee was given a piece of diamond shaped net material and they converted it into square mesh individually. Evaluation of the converted net was done and corrections were given wherever necessary. The trainees were satisfied with the hands on training and they were issued with participation certificate. Net menders engaged in mesh conversion Distribution of certificates NETFISH Sea Club at St Albert s College celebrated the World Ocean Day by organizing a beach waste disposal campaign and awareness programme at Vypeen and Fort Kochi beach on 26 th June The inauguration of the programme was done by Shri. A.K. Chaudhary, Director CIFNET in a function at the college presided over by the Vice Principal Rev. Fr. John Christopher Vadassery. Dr. M. L. Joseph, Principal of the college, Dr. Joice V. Thomas, CE NETFISH and State Coordinator Shri. Santhosh N.K. spoke on the occasion. Dr. Ajith Thomas John, HoD of the Research Dept. of Fisheries and Aquaculture delivered the welcome speech and Dr. Bijoy V.M. proposed vote of thanks. After the inauguration the sea club members and staff members cleaned Vypeen beach in the forenoon and Fort Kochi beach in the afternoon. About 40 students guided by 4 teachers of the Sea Club actively participated in the clean up programme. CE NETFISH and State coordinator also participated in the cleanup programme. Around 30 bags waste materials such as plastic bottles, glass bottles, empty cans of soft drinks, slippers, Styrofoam pieces, net pieces, plastic carry bags etc were collected from the beaches. The collected waste bags were taken to the waste collecting site of Kochi Corporation. NETFISH provided hand gloves, face mask, and caps to the participants.

17 Karwar Dry Fish Majali Dry Fish Malpe PPC Baithkol Dry Fish Gangolli SMP/FQM/CSF Baithkol SMP/FQM/CSF Karwar NFDB funded Square mesh fabrication training 50 NFDB funded Skill Development training programme on Fabrication of Square mesh cod end was conducted at Conference hall, CMFRI, Karwar on 29 th June Dr. Senthil Murugan, Senior Scientist, CMFRI, Karwar inaugurated the training programme. Dr. Shassi, AD, MPEDA urged the fishers to properly follow the conservation measures for future generations. Shri. Venkatesh Naik, Secretary, SCODWES and Shri. Dilip Chendekar, President, Trawl Boat Union, Baithkol were also present on the occasion. Shri. Riyaz, Programme Manager, SCODWES and Shri. Narayana K A, State Coordinator explained the objectives of the square mesh fabrication training. After the inaugural session, Dr. Hanumanthappa, Professor, Fishery Engineering Department gave a talk on square mesh in brief and urged the fishers to use only 35mm square mesh cod end. Practical section on how to convert diamond mesh to square mesh cod end was also demonstrated during the programme. Then all the trainees were divided into 10 groups and provided with net material, scissors, needle and twine to practice and fabricate square mesh cod end. Around 57 fishers including boat owners, skippers of vessels and net mending workers were trained by these. The officials of CIFT, through presentations, explained the trainees about the various types & patterns of nets used in fishing and the merits of square mesh cod end in the escapement of juvenile fishes. Shri. Jignesh Visavadia, State Coordinator, NETFISH also insisted the fishers that it is highly essential to use square mesh cod end in trawl nets to conserve the marine resources. Square mesh conversion training programme conducted at Veraval After the theory sessions, the technology to convert diamond mesh nets to square mesh cod ends was demonstrated to all participants. Thereafter the trainees were split into different groups and each group was made to prepare square mesh cod end themselves. The President B.A.Y.E.R.D.F.T, member NGO of NETFISH, had taken enormous effort in successful accomplishment of the. NETFISH Gujarat had celebrated world ocean day at Mangrol Fishing harbor on 8 th June 2018 by organizing a stake holder consultation on the topic Moving towards Sustainable Fishing and to stop juveniles fishing. Officials of the Department of Fisheries, CIFT, CMFRI, MPEDA, College of Fisheries, President and members of boat association attended the function. Mr. Jignesh Visavadia, State Coordinator, NETFISH explained the importance of celebration of World Ocean Day. Mr. Veljibhai K Masani, authority member delivered inaugural speech. Mr. Jitesh Solanki, Assistant Professor explained with a power point presentation on the present scenario of

20 19 marine fish catch and sustainable fishing. Dr. Prajith K. K, Scientist, CIFT explained the use of square mesh especially in trawl fishing to conserve the juvenile fishes and urged the fishers to avoid catching of juvenile fishes and to move towards sustainable fishing.
