Rainbows 30th Birthday Challenge Anglia RbLP_BR_C

Welcome to the pack to help you plan your Rainbows 30th birthday celebrations! This challenge runs for two terms: April through to December 2017 so there s plenty of time for your girls to get involved and have lots of fun. The activities have been divided in to: Look Learn Laugh Love This will help you cover all of the Rainbow Jigsaw areas. They also cover the Five Essentials: Working together in small groups Encouraging self-government and decision making A balanced and varied programme which is girl-led Caring for the individual Sharing a commitment to a common standard When the girls are choosing their activities please do encourage them to cover the four areas and the Five Essentials. When you re planning your programme, you may need to adapt an activity so all of points are covered.

Although we have chosen the theme of Under the Sea, which was taken from the 30th anniversary being Pearl, we appreciate that not all units are near to the sea and you may choose to use other water sources for inspiration. Please use these ideas as a start point for your planning. To complete the challenge your girls need to take part in at least three activities from each section. Remember to carry out risk assessments for the activities you choose and be mindful of ratios for outside events. Also take in to account food allergies/ intolerances. Be aware of the Girlguiding guidance on water safety when completing some of the activities. This can be found on the Girlguiding website. Please share your photographs celebrating the Rainbows 30th Birthday with us on social media (make sure you have permissions) using the hashtag #Rainbows30 - our social network links are on the back of this pack. Have fun! 30 Rainbows Birthday Girlguiding Anglia

LOOK 1. There are many wrecks under the sea. Arrange a visit an old boat, ship, or a submarine. 2. Go rock pooling or pond dipping, and explore what lives in these environments. 3. Go crabbing. What food is best for catching crabs? 4. Make a model of under the sea this could be done individually, in small groups or as a unit. Don t forget to include seaweed and debris. 5. Make a jellyfish in a bottle (Look - Appendix 1). Can you make it float and sink? 6. Go on a walk by a beach, river, canal or lake. Try making a scavanger hunt to find different shells or plant life. 7. Play a pairs matching game - either using images of fish, matching the image to the name or matching halves of images. 8. Make a diver in a bottle (Look - Appendix 2).

9. In your unit, split into groups and investigate the fish, mammals and sea creatures from each of the earth s Ocean Zones. Use the globe from Roundabout Global Adventure or a large map to identify where they are. Cut out the pictures, maps and statements and the Rainbows then need to match the pictures to the correct Ocean Zone (you might need to put up clues around the meeting place). This could be used at the start of each meeting to set the scene covering topics from a different Ocean Zone each week. The pictures could also be used to create a set of Under The Sea Bingo cards. Use the pictures and make up a set of cards with nine pictures on each card, cut out a separate set of the pictures to use to call the pictures. Using discs of card the girls cover the pictures on their bingo cards as they are called out. First person to get a line or a full house wins. 10. Watch a film about marine life e.g. Finding Dory, Finding Nemo or The Little Mermaid and look at different types of fish and where they come from, talk about their natural environment and how we can help to preserve it. 11. Local Zoo Find out if you have a local zoo that has some aquatic animals that you could go and visit. Perhaps you could challenge the girls to come up with some questions for the keepers? For more information on zoos in your area, visit the British Zoos website or take a look at the partners and supporters of Girlguiding on thier website.

12. Sand Art What you need: Card PVA glue Coloured sand (from craft shops) Draw a sand art design in pencil on the card. Use simple shapes that will be easy to fill with sand. Cover one section at a time with PVA glue and gently sprinkle on your coloured sand. Tip any excess sand into a bowl to use again. Put PVA glue onto each of the sections of your picture and use different coloured sands to create your finished picture. 13. Bubble pictures What you need: Paper Straws Poster paint Water Washing up liquid Spoon Put a little water into a bowl, squeeze some poster paint into the bowl and add a squeeze of washing up liquid. Stir the mixture. Put the straw into the bowl and blow lots of bubbles until they overflow the top of the bowl.. Gently lay your paper on the bubbles don t press too hard. You can lay the paper over another bowl with different coloured paint to create more bubble prints. Discuss with the girls about the environment and oil on the sea, and its effects to wildlife.

14. Sand Dough What you need: 3 cups of play sand 3 cups of flour 1 cup of baby oil Measure and mix all ingredients together, - if dough is to oily, add more flour. This can be moulded, or cut out using biscuit cutters. 15. Beach Sand Slime! What you need: PVA Play Sand ½ cup of water ½ cup of liquid starch Mix ingredients together Enjoy! 16. Complete the seal wordsearch (Look - Appendix 3). LOOK

Ideas Please use this page to note down any additional ideas you may have or ways in which this challenge can work best for your unit.

Look - Appendix 1 Jellyfish in a bottle What you need: 1 x clear plastic shopping bag String or a rubber band One litre clear plastic bottle Scissors Blue food colouring Instructions: 1. Cut the handles off the shopping bag so that you have a plain square of plastic. 2. Bunch the plastic bag inside of itself and tie a section off with the string/ rubber band to make the jellyfish s head. 3. Cut the remainder into strips for the jellyfish s tentacles. 4. Push the jellyfish into the empty bottle. 5. Fill the bottle with water and add a few drops of blue food colouring. 6. Squeeze the bottle or tip it upside down to make the jellyfish swim up and down inside the bottle.

Look - Appendix 2 Pen Lid Diver What you need: 1 litre clear plastic bottle A pen-cap (one with a sealed top and no holes apart from the one for the pen!) Plasticine or Blu-Tack A jar or wide glass full of water Instructions: 1. First you must add weight to your diver (the pen-cap) with blue tack or plasticine. Put blobs on the arm of the pen-cap (but don t block the hole at the bottom - see picture in top right corner). Then test your diver in a bowl full of water. Drop the pen-cap in, so it catches a bubble of air and get it to float just on the surface. 2. Now fill up your plastic bottle nearly to the top. Drop in your diver (remember to catch a bubble of air in it!) Screw the lid on your bottle! 3. Squeeze on your bottle and watch the diver sink. Let go of the bottle and watch the diver come back again!

LEARN 1. Explore and discuss with the Rainbows all the things you might find under the sea and make a colourful display to share with the local community. 2. Visit a fish (and chip) shop or a fish monger, and learn about the fish we eat. 3. Do you know someone who scuba dives? Invite them to talk to the unit with their equipment. 4. Do an experiment with salt water, sugar water and tap water to explore sinking and floating. (Learn - Appendix 1) 5. Learn about the coral reefs including the different colour corals, the types of fish that live there and why that the reefs are dying due to pollution. How the girls can help e.g. recycling? 6. Take a trip to a local aquarium or invite someone with a knowledge of sealife to find out more. 7. Use your local library or research online to find out more about whales and dolphins. Get each Rainbow to compile five interesting facts to share at your meetings.

8. Create a dolphin necklace and learn about how playful and friendly dolphins are. What you need: White clay Cord Blue, white and green beads Instructions: Style a small dolphin from clay. Make a hole in the fin to hang the pendant by. Either leave your dolphin to harden or bake following the instructions. When the dolphin is set hard, thread it onto cord or elastic. Thread the rest of the necklace with the beads and knot the ends. 9. Make some jewellery using fake pearls and find out where real pearls come from. 10. Taste some sushi and find out which fish it comes from. You could buy this ready-made from a shop or have a go at making some yourself. 11. Create a coral reef aquarium so that the girls can get their own coral reef (Learn - appendix 2).

12. Make a Socktopus (non-sew) (Learn - Appendix 3). 13. Make a Rainbow fish (Learn - Appendix 4). 14. RNLI If your Unit is close to an RNLI Lifeboat station, you could ask if someone could visit to tell you about their work, or better still, arrange to visit the RNLI lifeboat. There is lots of information on the RNLI outreach website. This is also a useful for a host of resources if you don t live close enough to one of the centres. 15. Origami Angel Fish (Learn - Appendix 5). 16. Try the Under The Sea quiz or make up your own! (Learn - Appendix 6) LEARN

Ideas Please use this page to note down any additional ideas you may have or ways in which this challenge can work best for your unit.

Learn - Appendix 1 Water Density Experiment You will need: Salt (table salt is fine) Sugar 3 sets of clear (glass or plastic) bowls filled with tap water Measuring spoons 3 eggs and other miscellaneous items in threes e.g. small plastic action figures Instructions: 1. Set out your sets of bowls and spoons filled with room temperature water. It may be worth trying warm water to encourage the salt and sugar to dissolve. 2. In one bowl of water, pour in about 1/3 of a cup of table salt. In another pour the same quantity of sugar. Leave the last bowl as simple tap water. 3. Test each item by placing it gently in the fresh water measurer. What happens? 4. Next, gently drop its counterpart into the salt water mixture. What happens? 5. Lastly, place the last of the objects into the sugar water mixture. What happens? 6. After testing all the objects, you can mix some food colouring with water and drop into each of the bowls to see where the colour settles. WHAT IS DENSITY? You can show that two things of similar size can weigh different amounts and that is what causes things to sink or float. Things that have a higher density may sink and things with a lower density may float.

Learn - Appendix 2 Make A Coral Reef Aquarium You will need: A cardboard box Paint, glue, glitter Fish pictures you can draw your own, use stickers or cut out pictures found in magazines or on the internet Cotton or string Play sand, stones, pebbles Small toys perhaps diver figures, a treasure chest, jewellery or pieces of treasure Glass pebbles (optional) Instructions: 1. Cut away one side of the cardboard box and make sure that all the other sides are still glued firmly in place maybe secure with masking tape if they don t feel very sturdy. 2. Paint the box inside and out. A mixture of blue, green and white paint can make it look like sea water. 3. Decide which side will form the bottom of the box. Coat with glue and sprinkle with play sand. If you like you could add a sprinkle of glitter, and you could also add some small stones, shells or pebbles. 4. Glue some of the smaller fish shapes or stickers on the back and the sides of the box. 5. Mount some of the larger fish shapes onto thin card and hang them from the top of the box using some cotton or string. 6. Finish decorating your aquarium with any small toys that you have around. The finished aquarium could either be used for display or for small world under the sea play.

Learn - Appendix 3 Make a Socktopus (non-sew) You will need: 1 sock (use a boot sock for longer legs) String this can be twine, jute or ribbon 2 googly eyes Fiberfill or cotton balls for stuffing Scissors Craft glue Instructions: 1. Lay out sock and starting at the opening, cut 3/4 of the way up toward the toe 2. Stuff the toe of the sock and tie it off using twine, jute, ribbon, or string 3. Cut the bottom of sock into 8 strips to make legs (pull each leg tight and release it to curl the edges if you like) 4. Glue on eyes Enjoy your new friends!

Learn - Appendix 4 Weaving Rainbow Fish You will need: Rainbow coloured paper Googly eye (or make one out of paper) White or black card stock paper Scissors/glue Instructions: 1. Make some Under the Sea props and large photo booth frame. Take some photos of your unit having fun under water! 4. Discuss with your unit and invent an underwater creature. What does it eat? How many legs or eyes does it have? You can then have a go at making or drawing it. 5. Have a Water Games session. 6. Go on a boat trip somewhere. 7. Make and play magnetic fish game (Laugh - Appendix 1). 8. Flatfish race. Get each girl to cut out a large flat fish shape from a piece of A4 paper, and decorate it if they want to. In small groups, give each girl a whole newspaper and get them to race a fixed distance (e.g. one end of the room to the other) using their newspaper to propel the fish along by flapping the newspaper against the floor. First one over the finish line wins!

9. Jellyfish Jump Set 3-4 Hula-hoops on the ground. Explain to the Rainbows that these aren t hoops, but jellyfish, and their task is to jump from one jellyfish to the next. Their feet must land inside the hoops, otherwise they ve been stung. At first, lay the hoops at a short distance from one another. After one round of jellyfish jumping, increase the distance between the hoops and have the Rainbows jump again. Continue increasing the distance until the hoops are really far apart. The winner is the Rainbow who makes it through the hoops without ever getting stung. Can be played as a relay race in teams. 10. Find the Pearl Have a large shell cut out (size of template for badge design is good) for each girl and a picture of a pearl, laminate for durability. Spread the shells out on the floor and, unseen by the girls, hide a pearl under one shell. After the girls have swum around for a bit, call swim to a shell when the girls choose a shell and run to it. Call out Where s the pearl? and the girls look under their shell and the girl/s with the pearl get to hide it for the next game.

11. Octopus Tag One girl begins as the octopus in the middle of a large playing area. All other girls are fish who must try to run past the octopus to the other side of the playing area. If a fish is tagged, they then hold hands with the octopus and become a tentacle to help tag more fish. The last fish alive becomes the next octopus. 12. Fish, Fish, Shark (same game as Duck, Duck, Goose) In this game, Rainbow sit down in a circle facing each other. One person is it and walks around the circle. As they walk around, they tap people s heads and say whether they are a fish or a shark. Once someone is the shark they get up and try to chase it around the circle. The goal is to tap that person before they are able sit down in the shark s spot. If the shark is not able to do this, they become it for the next round and play continues. If they do tap the it person, the person tagged has to sit in the centre of the circle. Then the shark becomes it for the next round. The person in the middle can t leave until another person is tagged and they are replaced.

13. Foody Ideas! Oyster Biscuits You will need: Two biscuits (rich tea, digestive etc) Icing Marshmallow fluff Small round white sweet (white chocolate covered raisin, white chocolate button or chocolate snowball) Spread one biscuit with icing (or similar) Hinge biscuits together with more icing or marshmallow fluff so they look like a clam or oyster. Put a small round white sweet (the pearl) on the bottom biscuit to hold them open. You have created an oyster. Or you could make sandwiches cut into fish or star shapes! These could be served at your birthday party! LAUGH

Ideas Please use this page to note down any additional ideas you may have or ways in which this challenge can work best for your unit.

Laugh - Appendix 1 Magnetic Fish Game You will need: Card String Paper clips Hole punch Scissors Magnet Glue stick and white craft glue Sticks lollipop, thin dowl or small sticks found outside Pens, pencils or paint anything to decorate your fish! Instructions: 1. For the fishing game, you will want to make six or more fish. You can make a template for everyone to draw around or print off sheets with multiple outlines of fish. You can either print on coloured card or decorate any way you want, you may find this easier doing before you have cut the shapes and punched the holes. 2. Take your time to cut out your fish shapes and use your hole punch to make a hole in the nose of each fish. 3. Use a paper clip to slip through each fish s nose for hooking the fish. The size of the ring determines how difficult it is to catch a fish. Make one ring for each fish. 4. Make the rod from the sticks you have decided to use. Cut a length of string and tie one end around the tip of the rod. Secure the string with a drop of glue. Use a 1 or larger circular or horseshoe-shaped magnet, and tie it to the end of the string. 5. You will need the fish and rod you have just created, and a watch or timer to play the Fishing Game. You also need pencil and paper to keep score. Make a pond shape with rope or cord and put the fish inside the pond. The youngest player goes first, and then play goes clockwise around the circle. Set the timer for 3 minutes, and say Go!. The player sees how many fish he/she can catch before 3 minutes are up. Once the time is up, return the fish to the pond ready for the next player. The winner is the one who caught the most fish in the alloted time.

LOVE 1. Find out the date your own unit started, and have a party. Invite previous Rainbows, Leaders etc. You may wish to use some of the activities from this pack during the party. 2. Hold a beach clean-up or a litter pick as a way to show the girls what they can do to help sea life. If you don t live near the beach many girls will have been or walked along a riverbank etc. so discuss the importance of not leaving litter in such areas. 3. Make your own sea creature from recyclable materials. Encourage the girls to bring things from home. 4. Raise money for a marine conservation charity Some ideas for fundraising: Hold a swimathon Decorate and sell under-the-sea themed cupcake Name a fish/dolphin/whale stuffed toy

5. Read The Rainbow Fish by Marcus Pfister and think about what you could share with others like the fish shares his shiny scales. This could be used as turning tale, i.e. Rainbows sit in a circle and are given a character from the story, when their character is mentioned, they stand up, turn round and sit down. 6. The Caring and Sharing Mermaid: As a Unit, make a the outline of a mermaid on a large piece of paper. Decorate segments of paper plates. Ask each girl to write behaviours that show sharing and caring mermaid would show on her plate scale. Stick the scales to the mermaid and challenge the Rainbows to do their best to do them during the forthcoming weeks. 7. Individually, Rainbows make a love starfish and ask the Rainbows to write on each of the legs one thing about a loving starfish would do for its friends under the sea. Link to caring about environment under and round the sea (or other waterways), or the girls Rainbow friends. 8. Talk about rubbish pollution around and under the water, and what we can do to reduce this and care for the oceans and waterways. 9. Visit an aquatic shop or centre and find out how the fish are looked after so they are kept healthy and happy. What food do they eat? How do they keep the water clean? How do they transport the fish?

10. Make a Rainbow-Multipus! Cut out a large body shape of an Octopus. Ask each girl in your Unit to cut out a leg shape that is large enough to write on. Discuss with the girls how their wishes for sea and water wildlife. Examples include I wish there was less oil in the oceans, more fish in the sea, more colourful coral reefs and cleaner beaches. 11. Make a Birthday Card as a Unit, and send it to another unit in a different District. Make the card Under the Sea themed and share some of the activities you have done to celebrate the birthday.you could take this further by having a joint meeting with another unit. 12. Make a marble picture (Love - Appendix 1) Use the globe from Roundabout Global Adventure to show the girls the oceans that may need to be crossed when goods travel by sea. The discussion may move on to pollution of the air so you could develop this by discussing the pros and cons of both sea and air transport. 13. Discuss types of fish that we eat who likes which types and who doesn t? Talk about sustainable fishing. Information is available online on sites such as or Make a tuna mobile, or collective collage, girls can colour in the fish or decorate with shiny paper. LOVE

Ideas Please use this page to note down any additional ideas you may have or ways in which this challenge can work best for your unit.

Love - Appendix 1 Make a Marble Picture You will need: Cooking oil Food colouring (lots of colors) Small bowls Fork Shallow pan Water Medicine dropper (optional but it makes it easier for the little ones) Paper you will want to use something a little thicker than regular paper. Instructions: 1. Put about 1/2 tablespoon of cooking oil and 1 teaspoon of food colouring into a small bowl. 2. Beat it hard with a fork until well blended. Repeat this for multiple colors in separate bowls. 3. Get a shallow pan that is large enough to fit the paper you ll be using and fill it with just enough water to cover the bottom. Please note that if the water is too deep, and you work too slowly, the colour will sink. 4. Take the dropper (or gently pouring if you don t have a dropper), and place drops of the oil and food colouring mixture on top of the water. 5. When the kids are happy with their design, have them place the piece of paper gently on top of the water. In the future we may try making designs using a toothpick or fork to make patterns and swirls in the colours. 6. Let it sit on top of the water for about seconds. Slowly remove the paper from the water to reveal the cool design and let it dry.
