MSC Tackle Box Allan Bristow, President Dedicated to Safely Fishing in and around Collier County September 2014 President s Message by Allan Bristow Hello Everyone. During the past few years, the Marco Sportfishing Club has seen unprecedented growth, more than doubling in size in the past three years. Currently, with 365 family memberships, we are approaching a point where it s becoming difficult to find venues to hold our events, and the big numbers can make the events difficult to manage at times. Your Board of Directors, Event Leaders, and other volunteers have enjoyed working hard to meet the challenges that the larger membership has brought. At the same time, we have been looking at ways to ensure that we can continue to provide outstanding, quality events in the future. With this information as a background, The Board of Directors has made a change to the club s bylaws that stipulates who will be able to join the club in the future. As of November 1, 2014, when membership opens up, the following will apply: New membership applications in the Marco Sportfishing Club will only be accepted from prospective members who live on Marco Island, Goodland, Isles of Capri or Port of the Isles or those who reside in one of these communities while in South Florida. Current members, no matter where they live, will be able to remain members of the Marco Sportfishing Club, as long as they are current in their dues. Registration for 2015 renewals and new member applications will open on November 1, 2014 and will close on February 5, We are convinced these changes will help ensure that the Marco Sportfishing Club can continue to provide outstanding functions, events, tournaments and services to its members in the future. See you on the water, Allan Bristow Fisherman's Tale: Do nothing, and nothing happens. Fishing, like life, is about decisions. You either make them or they're made for you, but you can't avoid them.

As a result of our experience in this area, they have asked the Marco Sportfishing Club for help and assistance. The "Fish the Everglades" clinic is being held at Fakahatchee Strand Preserve State Park, in Copeland, FL. (off Route 29, east of Everglades City). All educational materials will be provided, and kids who attend will be given a rod and reel. The "Friends" are expecting 150 children (and their parents) to attend. Announcements/flyers will be sent to all local schools in September. MSC volunteers would help at the "learning tables" where kids are taught about fish identification, knot tying, tackle box contents, and good angler ethics. Help is also need when the participants get to try out their new knowledge and new fishing gear in the nearby lakes/river. Volunteers are needed 9AM - 3PM. If you can go, please send an to Howard Laskau (hlaskau@comcast.net). Let him know if you can attend 9 AM - noon; noon - 3 PM, or all day. Once we know who is going, we can set up a car pool and make it a "road trip."

Kim s Korner Snook Salad Hi, MSC Newsletter readers! Snook is the September Fish of the Month. Here are two recipes, one each for salad and blackened: 1 snook filet, the larger the better 3 or 4 stalks of fresh celery 1 onion, chopped but not diced 2 eggs, hard boiled Sweet pickle relish ½ cup sour cream Mayonnaise, per your judgment Sauté the snook with some of the celery, chopped onion, salt and pepper until cooked through. Drain off all fluid and cool. Crumble the fish in a big bowl. Now add the hard boiled eggs, relish and remainder of the celery. Mix in sour cream and add just enough mayo to hold everything together. Use your judgment here. Salt and pepper to taste if desired. Chill for 24 hours before serving. Snook Blackened Preheat the oven to 350 degrees Fahrenheit. Sprinkle blackening spices on both sides of a snook fillet, pressing the spices into the fish. Tip: Combine salt, pepper, paprika, garlic powder and cayenne for a tasty homemade blackening spice. Heat a cast-iron skillet on the stove top over high heat. Heat a very small amount of a healthy oil, such as organic canola oil, in the skillet. Place the snook in the hot pan. Cook until the outsides of the fish are golden brown, about two minutes per side. Slide the skillet into the oven and finish cooking the snook. Remove the fish from the oven when the outside of the fish has turned black and is almost burnt. Serve the fish warm with lemon wedges for drizzling. Blackened fish is traditionally served with tartar sauce. About Snook Snook, robalo, soap fish, linesider, saltwater pike, are all names used to refer to what we know as the Common Snook. There are actually 12 species of the genus Centropomus that live in this hemisphere, with five of these occurring in Florida. Spawning snook are found in swift flowing passes in summer months. Snook are protandric hermaphrodites which means males can become females; larger fish are more likely to be females. This ability seems designed to maintain a strong breeding population. Snook live a long time (20 years).i d love to hear from you. I m looking for your favorite recipes to publish! Feel free to contribute to my Korner, thanks! KK kimking8722@gmail.com

Couples Charter Aboard Wild Thing by Kim King What a delightful day of couples fishing! Pictured: Captain Randy Hamilton, Kim and Ralph King, Lorna and Mike Verrastro, Belle and Derrick Raider aboard the Wild Thing on August 20. Luckily, the torrential rain held off until we were coming back to the dock. Started by catching pinfish for bait, then going approximately 21 miles offshore to find plenty of fish. While we didn t limit out, we nabbed 9 keeper grouper, 2 mangroves and 6 lanes. Lorna caught almost all of the snapper! A real fishing trip for the ladies we enjoyed Mimosas and gourmet foods along the way. Looking forward to a repeat in September. Charter Aboard Findictive by Keith Wohltman A charter trip on the Findictive with Captain Mike Avinon went out into the gulf for Grouper on Sunday, August 10th. Fishing that day were Fred Buckley, Tim Hamilton, Jim Chaffee, Dan Dupuis, Keith Wohltman and nonmember Richard. Here's the club members getting an early start. We had a great day fishing - lots of BIG red grouper and some Yellowtail Snapper. Fred Buckley won the pool with his 33 1/2" Red Grouper. It was a spectacular day on the gulf - waters were extremely calm.

Followed by a 32 1/2' fish caught by Jim Chaffee... Jim lead the pool until the very last fish came on board. Both fish were over 20 lbs. There were quite a few fish caught in the 30-32" range... Lots of big fish that day. Capt Mike Avinon did a great job of putting the anglers on fish 55 miles out in 120 ft of water. There was plenty of Grouper and Yellowtail fillets from this trip.

Kayak Fishing in Lighter Bay by Vic Ordija A small group of four kayakers set out on August 20th from the Goodland Bridge ramp. It was a warm and humid day and we were in search of Snook and Redfish. His efforts paid off and the fish was netted, measured and a photo taken before being released. John had an exceptional day. A couple of small Snook were caught early on around the bridge pilings and as the morning wore on, the group continued on into Goodland Bay focusing on Mangrove edges that jutted out into the bay. On one of the points, John Baker landed a small 20 Snook on a Rapala lure. While attempting to unhook the fish, one of the treble hooks imbedded in John's hand. John is a tough fisherman and managed to remove the hook and kept right on fishing. At the height of the tide, the group paddled through Hell's Gate and into Lighter Bay.As the tide reversed, fishing picked up with numerous Mangrove Snappers being caught by all. At midday, the foursome began the return trip fishing the Mangrove edges, when suddenly John Baker hooked into a large Redfish. Hollering for a net, John struggled to keep the large fish from darting back into Mangrove roots while trying to keep his kayak in position. On the return trip, the group encountered some breezy weather in the open areas of Goodland Bay. During the traverse, John Marchetti hooked a Catfish, and while leaning over to dehook the fish, John lost his balance and upset his kayak. Fortunately, the mishap only resulted in the loss of a landing net. John also had taken the precaution of keeping his cell phone in a water proof case. An enjoyable day was had by all.

September is Time to Refresh Boating Safety ~ Four Safe Boating Tips from US Power Squadron website. Each Year hundreds of lives are lost, thousands are injured, and millions of dollars of boat and PWC insurance claims are filed because of recreational boating accidents that could be prevented. Too often power boating outings turn tragic. You as as a boat operator, passenger, or concerned individual can make a difference. Here are several boat safety tips: Safety Tip 1 Wear Your Life Jacket Most people who are killed while boating drown and most people who drown are not wearing a life jacket. When you fall overboard, there is rarely time to get to a stowed life jacket. Modern life jackets are smaller and more comfortable than ever making it easy to "Wear It!" at all times. If there are passengers who can t swim, it is recommended to make them wear life jackets or have them stay on shore. Safety Tip #2 Stay Sober in Your Boat A boat operator with blood alcohol content above.08% is ten times more likely to die in a boating accident than an operator with zero blood alcohol. Other stressors such as sun, vibration and noise affect the body more when drinking alcohol. Operating a boat under the influence of alcohol or drugs is illegal and stupid. Safety Tip #3 Take America's Boating Course Regardless if you are a new captain or an experienced one, you should stay current with regulations and how to boat safely. Seventy percent of recreational boating accidents are caused by inexperience and lack of knowledge, particularly factors such as failure to pay attention, carelessness, recklessness, excessive speed, and failure to watch for hazards. The other 30% of accidents occur with EXPERIENCED boaters. Marco Power Squadron offers low cost boater safety courses and is a quick and great way for you to learn or refresh your boat safety skills, the rules of the road, and boating regulation. In many states, this safe boating course gives you the knowledge needed to pass your boat license or safety certification exam. You typically will be eligible for a reduction in your boat insurance costs. See listing below of courses offered on Marco. Safety Tip #4 Get Your Boat Checked The United States Power Squadron-Marco Power Squadron offers a free Vessel Safety Check (VSC). Their goal is to prevent boaters from getting equipment-related citations and to reduce safety-related accidents. These boating safety equipment checks are meant to be educational and helpful, and are a good follow-up to any water safety course. Their vessel checks are free and if it doesn t pass, they tell you what to do to pass. You then get an annual sticker for your vessel and this helps reduce chance for Coast Guard safety inspection.
