MSC Tackle Box Allan Bristow, President Dedicated to Safely Fishing in and around Collier County May 2014 President s Message by Allan Bristow Hello Everyone, Now that our bait fish have returned from a six month vacation, (where do those little fellows go?) our backwater fishing is coming alive. One of my favorite fishing trips is to get out early in the morning and work the beaches with top water plugs. I know a lot of us like to have that second cup of coffee and read the paper, but there s nothing like seeing the sun come up over the Everglades. Everyone knows how beautiful the sunsets are around here, but if you haven t been on the water to watch the sunrise, you don t know what you re missing! Mornings are also a great time to see our many tropical birds working for their breakfast. They are telling you where the fish are, so watch them carefully and who knows you may even catch a leaderboard fish! The month of May will also bring our off shore anglers more days to get out on the water. Seems like March and April have kept our Captains at the dock too often because of windy conditions. Grouper fishing is fantastic if you venture far enough west. Speaking of Grouper our third annual Rootin Tootin Red Grouper Tournament was the best one yet. Congratulations to all the winners. I can't wait till next year. Life on Marco Island will slow down as our winter friends return to their northern retreats. As the days heat up, so will the fishing. Don't forget, it s time to plan on returning for October's Red Fish Tournament. Save the dates: October 15 th to October 22 nd. LIFE IS GOOD! Fisherman's Tale: Nothing makes a fish bigger than almost being caught See you on the water, Allan Bristow

Overnight Kayak Fishing; Rabbit Key Early Saturday morning on March 21 st, 2014, four kayakers; John Baker, John Moore, Ron Linn and Vic Ordija set out from Everglades City on an overnight kayak fishing trip to Rabbit Key; a small outer island located in the heart of the Ten Thousand Islands. While we had to navigate through a thick morning fog, we encountered no difficulty following a route established on a hand held GPS. Following an outgoing tide, we paddled along Sandfly Pass to the Gulf, across Chokoloskee Pass, starboard of DemiJohn Key and finally on to Rabbit Key. The trip took three hours and we traveled 7.25 miles where we met up with our mother ship (Sandee Lee), captained by Allan Bristow and mate Jay Jones. Sea conditions were ideal and the Sandee Lee carrying most of our camping gear and provisions made the nineteen mile trip from Marco Island in a little over an hour. Low tide conditions around Rabbit Key that late morning made unloading a bit difficult in that all the equipment and supplies had to be carried a fair distance to our campsite. Nevertheless, the camp was set up quickly and enough time remained for the group to catch fish to complement a chili dinner brought by Captain Bristow. Baker and Jones both caught a nice Redfish and a couple of Grouper filets brought by Ron Linn were added to the evening meal which was cooked by Baker and Bristow. After an excellent dinner, we played horseshoes and as night fell, we built a big fire and sat around drinking beer and telling stories. A light ocean breeze kept the bugs away which made for a very comfortable evening. Allan Bristow decided to sleep under the stars; probably not the best decision as the breeze died towards midnight, the mosquitoes appeared and made sleeping quite uncomfortable. Morning brought more mosquitoes and no breeze, but as the sun rose, light winds dissipated the bugs and allowed the group to enjoy a breakfast of bacon, sausage, eggs and coffee. Due to a dropping tide, the decision was made to break camp early, load the mother ship and head back home. Captain Bristow headed out by 9:00 AM, while the four kayakers remained and fished around Rabbit and Lumber Key. Both Redfish and large Spotted Seatrout were caught and released. As the morning wore on, the group caught the incoming tide and paddled back to Everglades City, fishing along the way back. By 3:00 PM, the kayakers were back to the ranger station, completing an interesting and eventful kayak fishing trip.

Kayak Fishing Changes by Vic Ordija For the remaining 2014 kayak fishing events beginning with the April 23 rd event, I am revising the 2014 Kayak Fishing Challenge to include the Largemouth Bass as one of the four target fish species. The Sheepshead, one of the original fish species, will be dropped. The lucky kayak anglers that during sanctioned kayak fishing events catch the largest Spotted Seatrout, Snook, Redfish or Largemouth Bass will win a high quality fishing shirt embroidered with the Marco Sportfishing Club logo. Any of four fish species caught during both scheduled and impromptu kayak fishing events, will need to be photographed, measured and recorded. Measurements will made to the nearest ¼ inch using the pinched tail method and rounded up or down as appropriate. At the end of the year, the kayak anglers with the largest Spotted Seatrout, Snook, Redfish or Largemouth Bass will be awarded the aforementioned prize. Only one shirt prize will be awarded to any individual angler even if the angler catches more than one of the largest target fish species. The general membership will be notified of upcoming scheduled kayak fishing events by MSC newsletter, MSC website and by . On occasion, notices of impromptu kayak fishing events will be sent by to kayakers who are on the MSC kayak list. These are members who have previously indicated an interest in kayak fishing. These impromptu kayak fishing events are outings that are organized on the spur of the moment taking advantage of water and weather conditions and other circumstances. Fish caught during impromptu kayak fishing events are also eligible to be entered in the 2014 Kayak Fishing Challenge. Additionally, since some kayak fishing events (ex; Port of the Islands freshwater canal) have been and will be held outside of MSC backwater fishing boundaries, the aforementioned boundary restrictions are waived only for the sanctioned MSC kayak fishing events. Therefore, fish caught outside of the MSC backwater fishing boundaries are only eligible to be entered in the 2014 Kayak Fishing Challenge contest and are not eligible for entry in the Leaderboard or Fish of the Month (FOM).

RECENT CATCHES- Submit Photos of Your Catch! April 19th, MSC members Dick Larson and Kirk Evans Win Walkers Tournament! They won the open division in the second annual Walker s Silver King Classic Tarpon Tournament. For their efforts, they walked away with a check for $3, This is the second year that the tournament has been held, and both years the winners have been from the Marco Sportfishing Club. Walker s Marine sponsors the tournament, with proceeds going to the Michael R. Raisor Foundation for Brain Cancer Research. This year, the tournament raised over $8,000. Congrats to Sponsor and Winners! Jimmy Walker (Far R) presents $3000 Check and Trophy to Kirk (L) and Dick Offshore Charter aboard Findictive MSC Offshore Charter on April 22nd aboard Findictive with Capt Mike Avinon, included Mike Verrastro, Derrick Raider, Jim Chaffee, Gary Roth, Roger Lindhurst (not an MSC member, friend of John D.) and John Dolanski. The winner of the biggest grouper is Derrick Raider who won the pool.

MSC Athletes Take On Marathon Key Over April 24-25, 12 MSC Athletes ventured to Marathon Key to take on the local fish population. It was arranged by Ed McCarthy and Bob Trento. Their fellow athletes included Jim Romerill, Tim Hamilton, Jerry Fialkewicz, Derrick Raider, Ralph King, Steve Stevenson, Ron Mack, John Mueller, Dan Moll, David Rasmussen and his Guest, Dennis Lantzy from Ohio. A local charter boat company, Best Bet, was selected as they offered both offshore fishing as well as bay fishing. Half of the Athletes were selected to fish offshore on their 35 Cabo on Thursday while the other half were split to ride on either an inshore 24 Pathfinder or a 28 HydraSport. The Offshore/Inshore guides provided great help in locating the species the Athletes were looking for. The dates were selected to hopefully find the Tarpon in the bay and Mahi Mahi, Permit and Tuna in the open water. While the weather was calm, so was the fishing at times. While there were some attacks on our bait, no one hooked up during the morning three hour session with the acrobatic Tarpon on the first day and the second day the results were the same. The inshore captains then ventured to challenge Snook, Snapper, and the closed season Grouper near the Long Key bridges and shore. The offshore captain headed for the Marathon Hump. It is an underwater area where the bottom rises from 800 to 200 and various species feed there. We were there to find the powerful Permit and Tuna. The captain trolled weed lines periodically on the hour long ride to and from the Hump in search for Mahi Mahi. There was a fishing contest for the largest Mahi Mahi and Derrick won that with a 28 victim. The Mahi Mahi were scarce and small. The season hadn t really started yet apparently. We had dinner Wednesday thru Friday at local restaurants and on Thursday night, we all contributed catch so that all could feast on it at Franks Grill. While the name and location were nothing special, their Italian fare was outstanding. We had three different types of pasta and they prepared the donated Permit, Snapper and Mahi Mahi three different ways. The only thing missing was the Grouper that was out of season. Next year, the trip will be at the end of the first week in May so we can include the tasty Grouper. While all had a story to tell, Tim Hamilton provided the following about Bob Trento taking on a large legal Snook: Bob had cast up into the Mangroves along US 1 and the sheet pilings. The Snook came out to get the Live Pin fish then immediately headed back into the overhanging limbs and got Bob tangled up. Bob kept working and believe it or not got him out. Bob brought him out almost to the boat and the net. Well as so often happens he took one look at that net just outside of reach and headed back. Well apparently the leader had been weakened and so long Mr. Snook. That Snook was a slot Snook on the upper end. Bob was so excited and disappointed at the same time.

Kim s Korner Hi, MSC newsletter readers! The May fish of the month are King and Spanish Mackerel. I thought you d like some info on the difference, and various ideas on how people cook them: (fishinfranks.com) The lateral line on Spanish mackerel slopes gradually from the top edge of the gill to the tail. In contrast that of the King mackerel takes an abrupt drop at mid-body. The first (spiny) dorsal on Spanish mackerel has a prominent black patch. The King mackerel has none. As both species normally keep the first dorsal folded back in a body groove, this difference is not immediately evident. Spanish mackerel have prominent yellow/bronze spots on the flanks at all sizes. Young King mackerel have similar, but slightly smaller spots; adults are silvery with no spots. Question from Reader: Does anyone have a good recipe for Spanish Mackerel? I have a freezer full of the things, and I've never cooked any. Living on the Gulf Coast, we have three basic ways to cook anything: fried, fried, and fried.

Kim s and Others Answers: I'd go grilled, grilled, or grilled here. The flesh of a Spanish is too firm, like tuna, to fry in my opinion. Not a good batter fish. Try this if you want something different: In a Ziploc mix 1/4-cup soy sauce, 2 cloves minced garlic, tablespoon lime juice, teaspoon seasme oil, tablespoon ground fresh ginger, teaspoon honey, few splashes of rice wine vinegar. Marinate the fillets in there for 3 to 4 hours. Then get just a little mayo and mix it with equal amount Chinese hot mustard. Take the fillets out of the bag, brush on just one thin coating of mayo/mustard mix and grill. I used this on all fish with similar flesh...spanish, Atlantic bonito, blackfin tuna, albacore. Speaking from (delicious) experience: steak out the king fresh, don't freeze it. Marinate steaks in Italian salad dressing for 6-12 hours. Fire up the grill, using real wood like mesquite or oak. Grill the steaks, and throw a pat of butter on each one before you take it off the grill, just after you've flipped it. This, my friend, is the way to prepare king mackerel for eatin'! I would do something similar to the first answer...but sprinkle some chopped scallions on it before serving. The scallions are a nice contrast to the soy sauce marinade and the flavor of the mackerel. PS. also, grill it don t fry it. I grill all of my saltwater fish and they taste damn good. Grilled or broiled with lemon butter! They don't tend to freeze well due to their high oil content but I have had luck freezing fillets using a vacuum bagger. An easily modified recipe is oil a baking pan, add fillets skin down and brush flesh with oil and bake for about 20mins on 350*, then broil for about 5 to crisp up the tops. I say easily modified, b/c adding lemon, sesame, pepper, whatever you like, still seems to come out amazing. In my opinion, this is second only to a grill over wood. Plank it on the grill. Get a cedar plank, soak the plank in water(make sure it is submerged in the water), put the wet plank on a hot grill, put the fish on that, rub some lemon pepper on it and wait until its flaky. Maple works really well for this too. Throw them away. There is nothing worse than frozen mackerel. Go get some fresh ones. Skin them. That dark strip than runs down the sides is a sense organ that is used to locate predators and prey. It is very bitter. Get a razor-sharp knife and remove it. Cut a fillet off one side. Dip in corn meal batter and deep fry. You will find them to be unsurpassed. (fieldandstream.com) Thanks again to all involved in the Baiting Beauties Event. I am delighted to report that there will be a BB2! Please remember feel free to contribute to my Korner. Thanks, KK

Rootin'-Tootin' Red Grouper III - Tournament. Another Rootin'-Tootin' Grouper Tournament is in the history books. As usual, the weather played a key role in this event. We had a fantastic evening at Bistro Soleil for our kick-off dinner with the tropical sounds of Jamaica Dave complementing the sumptuous buffet. The only downside was the forecasted weather conditions for the days selected as our fishing days. Winds were scheduled to continue to blow and get worse as the week progressed. The only glimmer of hope was a small window of clear weather before the targeted fishing days. Howard mentioned the possibility and several captains knew they would miss the event if we decided to go early. As it turned out - that was exactly what we had to do. The fishing day was moved up to Saturday, April 5th. Some boats and crews had to make last minute changes. Keith kept an eye on the weather all night, just in case there was a last minute weather change. The boats in the 60 NM division were on the water early and found perfect conditions for their voyage to their "secret spots". Very small waves and calm conditioned prevailed. However, boats and crews weren't the only scramble necessary by the date change - we had to improvise the weigh-in as well. Instead of the planned weigh-in and awards celebration at Walker's Hideaway Marina, we held a "blind" weigh-in at Allan's garage on Saturday, followed by an awards celebration on Monday. That too was a blessing in disguise. The blind weigh-in allowed the exhausted anglers a chance to rest after their long day at sea. The awards event was well attended with relaxed anglers and their guests. Winners in the 20-mile division (one legal red grouper per boat) were: There were no 3rd place or 2nd place fish weighed - so all the prize money went to: Team Contender - Captain Ralph Crowell and his crew; Ed Brown, John Baker, Mark Tanner, and Joe Cafferelli for their single Red Grouper weighing in at 8.52 lbs. Team Contender also won the mystery fish prize with their 0.92 lbs Lane Snapper Team Contender also won the Captain's Calcutta - a very nice payday for Ralph and his crew!

Winners in the 60-mile division (two legal red groupers each boat) were: 1st Place: Team Rona - Captain Roger Linder and his crew; John Burback, Gary Lamotte, and Harv Perusse for their 2 Red Grouper total of lbs 2nd Place: Team Marco - Captain Bert Hoell and his crew; Fred Kouhi, Paul Milici, Ron Mack, and Ed Vesley for their 2 Red Grouper total of lbs 3rd Place: Horse Conchs - Captain Ed Adams and his crew; Jim Mueller, Pete Arcidiacono, Allan Bristow, Ron Linn, and Roger Shavlik for their 2 Red Grouper total of lbs Team Rona also won the 60-mile division Captain's Calcutta. Winner of the Wild Card Fish (Lane Snapper) for 60-mile division were: 1st place Double A - Captain Ben Aronson and his crew; Available Bob Trento, Leo Sutera, Jay Jones, Dick Yeaton, and Phil Madonia with their fish weighing 1.02 lbs 2nd place Desperado - Captain Al Jennings and his crew; Frank Renkel, Cornel Irimies, Steve Macko, Ed Ludwig, and Mike Ludwig with their fish weighing 0.85 lbs Congratulations to all who competed in the event, and special thanks to our tournament sponsors, Walker s Marine, Pursuit Boats and Raymarine for helping to make this a first-class tournament!
