2 President s Message Happy Fall Everyone, It looks like fall is upon us now and its time to really start to think about our fall and winter hobby...our fish. Friday night we will be sponsoring the Pittsburgh Area Planted Aquarium Society for a talk and demonstration. They will be planting a tank along with a power point presentation. I am sure it will be really interesting and worth everyone's time. After the demonstration each member present will be given a ticket and the member with the winning ticket will be taking the fish tank home. I also want to thank all the members who attended the auction and helped out. As everyone knows an auction is a really big event and takes a large number of people. We had a lot of members who chipped in and it certainly made it a lot easier on everyone who worked that day. Also, on Friday night we will be asking members to sign up to take a position on the board or take on a committee. As a club, we need the help of everyone to make it successful. We cannot continue to rely on just a few to offer all the things this club offers its members. Think about it and if you can spare the time to continue to make this club a success, please sign up. The meetings of the board are held at 7pm, the day of the meeting. Any questions about a position please see me. Lastly, at this meeting we will be having a Chinese raffle for the following fish. These fish were ordered for the raffle, but the hurricane hit and they could not ship the fish in. Ngara Flametail Peacock Pair, Xeno Isanga Yellow 6 fish, F-1, Neolamp Daffodil 6 fish, F-1 Neolamp Daffodil 6 fish, F-1, Metraclima Williamsi North 6 fish, F-1 Metraclima Williamsi North 6 fish, F-1, Altolamp Calvus Black 5 fish, F-1 Julid. Ornatus 6 fish, I hope to see a lot of you there for the meeting. The Aqua Scape demonstration will be well worth everyone's time. See you Friday night., Dan
3 October Is Nomination Month This meeting we will be taking nomination's for the club's Board of Directors and Committee Heads. Every position is open and we are looking for members to step up and take a position to help make our club better. Below are the positions that are open. Please look over and if you can, sign up for the position you are interested in. Those positions that have 2 or more members wanting, the election will be held at our Saturday, November 11 th meeting. President Vice President Secretary Treasurer Editor Membership At Large (3 Positions) Bowl Show - committee Kitchen - committee Speaker - committee Breeder Award Program Social Media Raffle For those interested, yes, being a board of committee person does take some time. It is not as much as you may think. We hold our board meetings at 7pm the night of the meetings, so it is rare when we would meet at another time, although it could happen should we engage in something that is new to the club or may need more organization. As you know, we are a busy club with fish buys, food and hard good buys and yes, we are asking if you take a position, to stand up and help. We cannot leave everything to just a few people. The more help, the easier it is and the better we can make the club. Please give it some thought and if you can, sign up to take a position and help the club. Nominations can also be excepted up until 8:15pm at the November meeting. After that nominations will be closed and elections held if necessary. The new board will take effect January 1, 2018 Thank you.
4 Care and Breeding of Nothobranchius fuscotaeniatus By Joe Doyle Picked up this pair at the Catfish Convention (CATCON) in Washington D.C. by Gary Haas, renown killifish breeder and BNL newsletter editor for the American Killifish Association (AKA). Gary always has great species available for other breeders at various events. Kept pair in a medium size critter container. Water 150 tds, 4GH, 7KH, room temperature 74F, and a squeezed handful of coconut fiber. A local fish store chain sells coconut fiber in a brick 3-pack for $9.99. I always have a 5 gallon bucket half filled with water containning a brick of coconut fiber, which expands in a hour. Put a lid on of the top bucket and it never goes bad. Use the same stuff to squeeze in a deli cup with lid containing poked small holes for resting killifish eggs. Pulled and moved the pair to a new medium size critter container every two weeks. The old wet coconut fiber is drained into a baby brine shrimp net and squeezed firmly and spread out on newspaper to dry for 4 to 12 hours till it becomes the consistency of damp tobacco. The coconut is then poured into a small fish bag. Afix a label that contains name of fish, where obtained, dry date, wet date. In this case, the eggs are allowed to sit for 3 months and placed sealed in a fish bag in my dark sock drawer. After 3 months, cut open the bag, dumped contents onto a small critter container filled halfway up with aged aquarium water from another tank. Checked every day for fry. After 2nd day started feeding small amounts of microworms. At a week, filled up container rest of the way, started to see small fry. Added live bbs to daily feedings. In 3 weeks, can distinguish male from female. Moved all fry to a medium size critter container. At 6 weeks, they begin spawning, kicking coconut fiber away from the corners of the container. Easy peat spawning killifish. Don't tell my BAP peers about these fish. The BAP race is cut-throat in my club.

10 Underwater By STM Hello everyone and I hope all is well with you and your fish. Several months ago our very own Captain Frank Orteca had a chance to attend Guido Ponzinni s 97th birthday party. Let s hear about what captain Frank encountered... The date was August 15th. Guidos 97th birthday party. Tons of people both family and friends in attendance. Mountains of Pasta and Niagara s of wine. When the live band started playing the traditional Italian folk song the Taratella,Frank in shock seen Guido jump up and start dancing. For his age he is a fine physical specimen and can still cut the rug. Since it was his birthday party he could not get away too long but he did find twenty minutes to take Frank down to his fish room. He has condensed the amount of tanks and strains of guppies, by doing so he has improved the quality of the fish by his heavy handed culling. He currently is keeping 2 strains. One are half black reds that date back to Fred Samuelson of Germany. This line was set in the 1950 s, it is said to be the first ever line of half black guppies. It makes Frank appreciate his even more seeing that they were given to him from Guido some 10 plus years ago. The second line are reds and they have the lineage to the 1950 s and go back to Larry Alger who received his initial stock from Paul Hahnel and actually beat Hahnel in head to head competition. The real surprise in Guidos room were the bettas he started working with just recently. They were red half moon and red double tails. The bettas are like living art work. When he took the cards out from between the jars and they started flaring it was a sight to behold. Frank is currently redoing his fish room and when its said and done he will go back to Guidos for some bettas and in twelve months start showing them in the NEO bowl show. See everyone this coming Friday night...and remember...i m on your side...

19 Committee Announcements (cont.) NEOfish BOWL SHOW 2017 Guidelines for Judging a Tropical Fish Show The 10 Point System The 10 Point System taught to be by a Cleveland Aquarium Society founding member. One of the best Tropical Fish Judges that has passed away Mr. Mike Neelon, who taught me how to judge. As you all know there are rules that govern all aspects of today s society. All aquarium societies or clubs have a constitution and by-laws that are in place that the societies or clubs follow. Some clubs follow what is called Robert s Rules of order, which are very specific. Other clubs follow a less restrictive route. A club s bowl show also have specific rules that entrants must follow to show their fish in competition to either place 1 st, 2 nd, or 3 rd. and the winner might win points, or cash. There is a year- end winner. The monthly bowl show prepares the entrant for various club mega shows. The entrant can speak to the judge and find why their fish didn t place, or didn t take 1 st. At various club shows, there are the same categories and more depending on the club. The fish are also judged 1 st, 2 nd, or 3 rd, along with other major categories that the 1 st place winner of each class will compete for the Best in Show. Allot of judges utilize their own way of judging fish but when I judged, I used Mike Neelon s, 10 point system. The 10 Point System This is the system that I used when I was on the judging circuit. First item of judge was to check the entry name and number against the entry form and to make sure the entry was what it was supposed to be. I recorded each individual fish discrepancy on the entrants form. I also made notations on the form to help the hobbyist in future shows if the minor flaws could be corrected. If there were permanent flaws that couldn t be correct I also made the notation the form. The 10 Point System covers the following 3 basic items: Show Tank or Bowl Water Quality The fish it self Tank or Bowl Appearance (possible loss of 1 point) This was the first area that I would look at. Questions: Is the bowl the right size for the entry? Example: If the entry was a Cory Cat the Cory will show better in a 2-1/2 gallon tank vs. a bowl because it with swim erratically no stop and can t be judged. The tank or bowl outside face must be clean; no water marks and scratches free to see the entry. Is there a background on the tank or bowl, this is a requirement in all shows. The tank needs to be free of any object that may damage or kill the entry. Example: Air Stones that are made of glass beads can cause major issues when the fish scrapes against it when frightened. Styrofoam air diffusers will not cause damage to the entry. Keeping the entry in the open and in the center of the tank or bowl is to paint the bottom with black paint or black tape and the fish will stay over the area. If the fish cannot be seen or the judge has to constantly coax the fish into the judge s view, the fish will not be judged.
20 Committee Announcements (cont.) Water- Possible loss of 1-point 1. When a fish is in a confined space for a period of time the water must be clean, free of debris, (hint) stop feeding the entry for at least 3 days, this will cut down on fish waste. Specific fish such as catfish can go without food for 4 days and there will be minimal fish waste. 2. When I judged I removed the cover of the bowl and smelled the water to check for ammonia which can actually burn the fins. Ammonia also comes from fish- waste; food that the entrant thought the fish was hungry. Water can be changed prior to the actual judging. Also, fish- waste must be cleaned out of the bowl or tank before judging, if not points will be taken off the fish. If the water is cloudy, 3. And smells the entry can become stressed which in turn may possibly cause harm to the fish. After the show you will have to acclimate the fish at home before placing it back into its permeant home. Fish entry-major loss of points When the entry is judged, there are numerous areas that must be addressed. The judge has to be knowledgeable of all the fish, fin shapes, total length of the fish, color, and sex of the entry. Deportment- meaning is the fish displaying its fins fully, or is it hiding and will not come out to the front of the tank or bowl. Are there flaws, such as fins: a damaged or broken fin ray that was a result of a tank mate or, damaged when removed from the permeant tank with a net. Scales missing or color faded. Any infection the fish may have which will automatically disqualify it. All imperfection will be listed on the judging sheet by the judge s assistant. If asked the judge will explain why a particular entry didn t place and explain to the entrant when they can or cannot do to work on the fish. After the judge assess each fish, the judge that picks the 1 st., 2 nd., and 3 rd. place winner in the class. Then all judges will form a consensus on what 1st. Place entries qualify to be awarded the best of the Division. Then after that is completed, the judges usually vote on a runner up to the Best fish in the show. Depending on the club there would be other various awards.
