Trip to WACO By Joe Doyle Trip to WACO (Wisconsin Area Killifish Organization) Convention November Started out Friday Nov 4th at 3:00am for the 8 hour trek to Milwaukee Wisconsin for the annual WACO Convention. This year's event was a first for me. Left so early to avoid Cleveland & Chicago rush hour traffic. Stopped in Beaver Falls and picked up a killifish enthusiast, and stopped in Youngstown to pick up a member of YATFS (Youngstown Area Tropical Fish Society) who is also into killifish. We left Youngstown around 4:45am. Stopped for breakfast half way in Elkhart Indiana, this side of Chicago. We arrived in downtown Milwaukee at 1:00pm, at our first shop hop: BEST Fish 1335 North Doctor Martin Luther King Drive Milwaukee, WI Phone: (414) Hours: M-Sat 10:00am - 6:00pm Sun Noon - 5:00pm 20 Minutes from hotel This was the first of 3 shops on the agenda before we checked into the hotel. I was first struck in awe as I walked down a long corridor past rooms of tanks, driftwood, and approached a round tall tank Hippocampus erectus sea horses. They were full grown adults, listed at each. The whole weekend I thought of nothing but buying them. Somehow I found the strength not to bring them home. The store Best Fish had a great selection of eels, loaches, catfish--both L number plecos & corydoras. They had equal number of salt water tanks, altogether numbering more than 200 tanks. The length of the store was equal to House of Tropics in Baltimore. They carried black worms and live adult brine shrimp. This is one of those stores I need to go back to again very soon.
Next, we hopped on over to: Aquatics Unlimited 3550 S 108th St West Allis, WI Phone: (414) Hours: M-Sat 10:00am - 9:00pm Sunday 10:00am - 6:00pm 15 min from hotel This store was hard to miss. It had a big fish on the side of the building. The inside reminded me of a space station. The Isle on the outside of the store was a big circle, and two isles made a cross in middle. Two thirds of the store is freshwater fish, one third salt water. Reminded me a lot of Aquarium adventure in Columbus Ohio. The store carried mostly bread and butter fish, but also had a great selection of not often seen fish. Was surprised to find more than one species of a peat spawning killifish. They also had a great selection of apistogramma and corydoras species. Another store I need to return to soon. Am looking for an excuse. Just around the corner was our 3rd and final stop for the day: The Fish Factory 9218 W Oklahoma Ave Milwaukee, WI (414) Hours: 10am - 9pm They had just gotten in several boxes of wild fish and we're being processed and quarantined. The store looked like it was just renovated. The first level was dark lit so the fresh water fish stood out. The second level, two steps up, was decorated in a tropical theme, containing half fresh water and half salt water animals. In one corner were a tank of painted turtles. In the back last room of the store were salt water fish and corals, lighting done in all LED. Very well stocked with a variety of aquaculture not often seen together. On our way to the hotel, we discovered a classic Greek restaurant named: Pallas Restaurant 1657 S. 108th Street
West Allis, Wi Their Souvaki was delicious. If you are in the area they are a must stop, on the shop hop. Located just down the street from Aquatics Unlimited. See: for their menu. We kept returning to this restaurant for each evenings main meal. Such a variety, it was a challenge to decide on which entree to try next. My mouth is watering just thinking about their food. The song "Hava Nagile" is stuck in my head. Checking into the Days Inn hotel, Friday evening we felt like we had a full day of fish fun. Saturday morning WAKO fun kicked off at 9:00am with a box sale in the garden room. As each seller arrived and began setting out fish/plants around the edge of the room on tables for sale, a swarm of buyers pegged the seller with questions. My question was the same with each seller, "Hey do you have any Notho's?" Most said no, but some said yes, much to my excitement. As the morning rolled on and less and less sellers arrived, buyers and sellers gathered around tables in the middle of the room talking about killies and life. By 1:00pm, the box sale closed. The killifish show fish were on display for the public from 11:00am to 4:00pm. At 12:00pm Ken Normandin presented his talk "doing it the wrong way - breeding rivulus", then at 2:15pm Ken presented "Collecting Rivulus in Columbia". Afterwards, we were back on the road for new adventures. Aquatic Clarity was our first stop. Located about 40 minutes north west of our hotel: Most of Jeff Michael's stock are wild, and are put through strict quarantine process for a few weeks before being offered to customers. I was lucky enough to obtain a group of wild Pterophyllum leopoldi and Nannostomus beckfordi pencilfish. I was surprised when handed a net to catch my own. Felt very fortunate for the opportunity to meet a great fish keeper. a
Next, we hopped on over to Rob McClure's fish room. Each tank was carefully scaped with a porret foam filter, java moss, and sand. It was amazing the number of fish he was putting out. When we entered he had a number of Wild species spawning, fry on mini marina boxes growing out, and more tanks with sub-adult fry growing up. Was indeed a great opportunity to see how a master catfish breeder works his magic. We finished up the evening with a bite to eat at Pallas, then headed back to the hotel to hang out with killifish enthusiasts. The next morning was the big auction. There were over 300 pairs of killifish in the show. Many of them came up for auction. We stayed until 1:00pm then headed home. I rolled in around 11:00pm. All and all it was a great trip. Next killifish event is the Killifish Karnival in Elkhart Indiana, this side of Chicago See you there!

Committee Announcements (cont.) Breeder Award Challenge Program (BACP) The Challenge... We will begin accepting fish for this program at the meeting April 15, 2016 and it will continue until the meeting on March 17, 2017 that will be the last date for submissions. Any plaques that are earned will be awarded in April 2017 at our monthly meeting. This program is an extension of our usual BAP program. The basic program is still as it was and fish may be turned in from any category at any meeting. As you look at the information below you will notice that there are very few Central American, Tanganyikian, and 1 Malawian and no Victorian cichlids. The reason for this is that basically we receive a lot of these and the purpose of the program is to broaden your interests. If there are fish you would like to have designated as a Target Fish, you may submit it to me for consideration in person, by to Lotsapetsgarfhts@aol.com or even through Facebook. Please keep in mind that just because you ask does not mean it will be. The purpose of the Target Fish is to challenge you to breed something a little bit harder. I may add new Target Fish from month to month. I challenge you to complete 6 challenges in the next 12 months. Those that include at least 1 Target fish will receive a special award the others will get the points. Each of the 6 MUST BE from a different group, in other words you cannot turn in 6 Tetras. Again we are looking to EXTEND our interests. Only 1 item from each group will qualify for the Challenges, but of course you are welcome to turn in any fish as usual for BAP points. Finding Target Fish can be a problem. Places to look are Wetspot, Aquabid, the Auctions and even the local Pet Shops. If you need help finding something ask me I may be able to locate them for you.
