1 Fa l l Long Lake Fishing Club Incorporated, P.O. Box 303, Campbellsport, WI llfclegend@sbcglobal.net Turtle Hibernation Slow And Steady Wins The Race Reprinted from Lake Tides, Volume 37, No. 4 Fall/Winter by Kim Shankland, UWSP student, UWEX Lakes We all fondly remember the childhood story of the Tortoise and the Hare, especially when our parents would console us with the wise words of, slow and steady wins the race. This statement becomes even clearer when research studies prove turtles live past 100 years of age! The slow moving, yet cunning turtle that is depicted in the story reflects the true life of the turtle today. Turtles have fascinating abilities, especially during hibernation, that keep them safe and functioning until the first ray of sunshine on a 50 degree spring day. Turtles are known to be the longest living creatures on the planet. With their existence reaching back to 200 million years ago, fossil records indicate their extended time on Earth has not prompted much change to their individual makeup. With most turtles reaching 100 years of age, studies have proven some live for around 200 years with harvestings of musket balls and arrowheads found in their shells. While eleven varieties of species live in Wisconsin, the turtle most likely discovered in or around the water is the painted turtle. Ten out of the eleven varieties are known to hibernate in the winter season underwater either on top or beneath the dirt bottom. Recent studies indicate that some turtles don t actually hibernate, but remain semi-active by moving about the water in winter. Hibernation for other turtles involves more preparation and biological aspects that are unique to those turtles. The process of hibernation for turtles is INSIDE THIS ISSUE Turtle Hibernation Slow And Steady Wins The Race 1 Glenn Henning Tournament Results 2 Pictures From Glenn Henning Tournament 3 George Hudson Fall Fishing Tournament 4 Did You Know? 4 comparable to other animals and includes storing fall fat reserves, lowering their metabolic pressure, and sleeping through the weather when it is intolerable. Turtles hibernate at the bottom of water sources rather than on land due to water s ability to absorb tremendous amounts of heat with only a minor increase in temperature. At 39 degrees Fahrenheit, water also sinks to the bottom of ponds or lakes at its greatest density which enables the turtle to keep a stable temperature if they are deeper than the frost line. When the water goes below 39 degrees, the cooler water rises and the turtle is still safe, comfortable, and never reaching the point of freezing. The temperature stability for hibernating turtles gives them a comfortable environment, but breathing is also affected through the 39 degree temperature. The turtle faces slow oxygen starvation and a possible fatal accumulation of carbon dioxide while submerged. Turtles have two sources of oxygen to fulfill their needs during the winter: their throat cavity and two thinwalled sacs near the anus. These sources are lined with minuscule blood vessels that permit oxygen to be extracted from the water. Though this still may cause some oxygen deprivation, turtles can last for longer periods of time without oxygen compared to other Please see Turtle Hibernation on page 6
2 Page 2 Glenn Henning Tournament Results By John Hrovat This year s tourney took place Saturday June 2 nd with temperatures in the low 50 s at start time and only made it to the high 50 s by the finish. Nineteen entrants registered for the event but only 15 showed up for weigh in. Twenty-six Northern, 45 Bass and 4 Walleyes were registered. Contestants had 5 limits of Bass and 2 limits of Northern. If Steve could have stretched that 16 inch Walleye he boated and released to 18inches, with the new Walleye regulations in force he would have had 3 limits of fish. But then again 40 pounds of fish was an outstanding day of fishing. My record keeping for the tourney only goes back 10 years and that weight total for 1st place was the most we have had in that period of time. Finishing just out of the money by 5 ounces for the second year in a row was Ed Ebert. Once again thanks to all the volunteers, the many contestants that participated and Benson s Hide-A- Way for use of their facilities. Even though higher weights were mentioned at the tournament, this gives us a true weight measurement as we have done in past years. Pictures above are from the LLFC 5 to 95 Fish Camp held in June.

4 Page 4 George Hudson Fall Fishing Tournament 9/22 & 9/23 What will you be doing on the mornings on September 22nd and 23rd? Why don t you plan on entering the George Hudson Memorial Fall Fishing Tournament? If you only can make one day that s okay, you still have the opportunity to show off your angling skills, and you never know, you may win! The tournament format is a point per inch of legal fish for the following species: Walleye, Bass, Northern, Blue Gill, Crappie, and Perch. Only one fish per species will be counted toward your total points. See you there! Tournament Rules Must be a member of the LLFC. If you are not a member, a membership application can be filled out and dues submitted with your tournament registration no later than Friday 9/21/18. Entry fee is $10 per person. Only two members per boat are allowed. Six species contest: Walleye, Bass, Northern, Blue Gill, Crappie, and Perch. Only one fish per species counts towards your point total. One point per inch of legal fish will be awarded. If fishing both days, you can register longer fish on the second day. This will replace your previous day points. Highest point total wins. The top six will receive cash prizes. Fish registration will be at Benson s Hide A Way at noon each day. Prizes will be awarded Sunday shortly after the fish registration. Please fill out the tournament entry form on page 7. We re on the Web! Visit us at: Did You Know Fathead Minnows Help Control Mosquitoes? Reprinted from Lake Tides, Volume 39, No. 3 Summer/Fall 2014 Wisconsin s native fathead minnows have been stocked into sloughs, ponds, and ditches for mosquito control. Research on the fathead minnow in Madison found it to be effective in reducing mosquito densities in stormwater drainage channels and ponds, including those mosquito species implicated in the spread of West Nile virus. In the lab, a single minnow consumed an average of 74 mosquito larvae in a 24-hour period. Minnows may even be more effective at reducing mosquitoes than bats or purple martins! We don t recommend dumping minnows into your lake, which is both an expensive idea and could introduce invasive species or VHS disease. To help out fatheads, make sure that they have access to nesting sites. Fatheads usually seek out the underside of a submerged log or rock resting on a sand or gravel lake bottom. They will then excavate a nesting cavity underneath the object and the females will enter the cavity and attach eggs to it. Like sunfish, male fatheads will vigorously protect a nesting site and stick around to care for the fertilized eggs Wisconsin Lake Roundup Five Lakes With Largest Surface Area Lake Winnebago (Winnebago County) 137,708 acres Petenwell Lake (Juneau County) 23,040 acres Chippewa Lake (Sawyer County) 15,300 acres Poygan Lake (Winnebago County) 14,102 acres Castle Rock Flowage (Juneau County) 13,955 acres

During hibernation, it drops by another percent. Turtle hearts that beat 40 times a minute on a warm day in July drop one beat every 10 minutes in winter (Lee 1). Pictures from the LLFC Glenn Henning Fishing Tournament held in June. Wisconsin Lake Roundup Counties with the fewest lakes Brown and Outagamie - 4 So the turtle is fully functioning and safe until spring, right? Almost. There is one other role that the turtles body plays allowing it to survive the winter. Since the turtle is under the ice for months at a time, lactic acid begins to build up because of the motionless state of hibernation. Calcium salts from the shell of the turtle are gradually dissolved into the bloodstream to neutralize the lactic acid as well as keep the heart pumping and active. Turtles have remarkable adaptations that help them survive during the long and cold Wisconsin winters. Though they may be slow, their steadiness and determination toward an end goal aide them towards a victory of lying out on their favorite log on a fresh, spring day. The next time you think about the tortoise and the hare, rethink the story in a new perspective. Though the turtle beats the hare at the end of the story, the turtle realized one of the hare s greatest ideas: the nap
