1 J a nu a ry Long Lake Fishing Club Incorporated, P.O. Box 303, Campbellsport, WI llfclegend@sbcglobal.net Response to LLPA President s Pier Article The Long Lake Fishing Club Board of Directors support the following letters in response to the LLPA fall newsletter "Presidents Pier" article. This is in response to the LLPA s Fall Newsletter Presidents Pier Article: 1. It was more than just two of our directors that questioned the use of herbicides to treat the invasive weeds in Long Lake. 2. There was not an off agenda board vote at our regular meeting which our president was unable to attend. 3. Nobody on our board was convinced or coerced by anyone, multiple issues were discussed and we as a board decided not to get involved at this time for multiple reasons. We appreciate the LLPA s concern and attempt to take on the invasive weed problem directly and wish them great success at it. This course gives them identity and is noble but it is their baby and not ours. They hired Onterra and secured a government grant, we did not. Some of our directors saw red flags in the grant approach of which they had not. As for the science behind all of this, it is inconclusive. Not enough research has been done on the effects of chemical application and other impacted organisms for our directors to green light this project. A lake is not a test tube and the variables to us are too hard to control. Let us hope that both organizations are on high roads that end in the mountains and not some swamp. In the meantime we should not burn our bridges as we both at times may have to back track and take a different path less we fall over a cliff. The Long Lake Fishing Club has attacked invasive species twice already. We took on Purple Loofstrife with beetles to a degree of success. We took on the loss of cover for fish from zebra mussel infestation Please see Response on page 3 INSIDE THIS ISSUE Response to LLPA President s Pier Article 1 DNR Stocks Walleye in Long Lake 2 George Hudson Fall Fishing Tournament Results 4 LLFC Fisheree Golfing In January? 6 Upcoming Events 8 Win a Polaris Sportsman 570 ATV The Long Lake Fishing Club s Fisheree raffle is now underway. The grand prize, a Polaris Sportsman 570 ATV, is waiting for that lucky winner. Do you feel lucky? Besides the grand prize there will be many other prizes up for grabs. A Ruger American rifle with Tasco scope along with other cash and gift certificate prizes will be drawn at the Sportmans Club, Saturday March 7th At 2 p.m. a free fish fry will be served with the drawing to be held at 6 p.m. Tickets are $5 each or 5 for $20. Proceeds will help fund club projects for the betterment of Long Lake.

3 Response from page 1 with fish cribs. That success is pending yet the intent was for the fish. We hope that both organizations have success in their projects no matter what, for the benefit of Long Lake. We feel our identities should remain ours and not get all mixed up. Though are goals are similar, our paths should and will remain separate. Charlie Benson, Long Lake Fishing Club Director I just finished reading the LLPA s fall newsletter. I am sorry if Mr. Patton and/or any other LLPA board members are upset with the Long Lake Fishing Clubs decision not to support the weed spraying on Long Lake. I can see that you ve put a lot of effort into trying to be as proactive as possible on the invasive weed threat. I myself voted not to support the method of spraying to control the weed problem. I am very fearful that the long term effects from spraying have not yet been felt. I know that the company (Onterra) helping get your grant is convinced that there will be no harm done to the lake. I understand with all the recent developments in invasive species that it may be hard to find experts to help advise us in this matter, but with that said, I must admit that I myself need more information from other sources before I would feel comfortable dumping chemicals into Long Lake. I believe that if Onterra does not get the grant and does not win the communities support they do not get paid. I am very worried that their goal may not be the same as mine or anyone else that is concerned about the whole ecosystem on Long Lake. I am very confused why the Lake Ellwood issues are not concerning more people. Instead of a private vendor trying to make a sale, you have the head biologist that has studied Lake Ellwood extensively before and during the spraying process telling us what he has seen first-hand. I feel he needs to be heard from before it is too late. Once we damage the ecosystem we cannot go back. I am aware that there is a study that is being done on Lake Ellwood that will be completed in We are already spraying annually so any effects proven in that study will only be showing us what to expect not what we could prevent and it will be too late. The Lake Ellwood biologist sounded as if he would be happy to inform anyone about the data he has collected during the years before and during the spraying. He had many examples of aquatic life Page 3 that have been extremely devastated during the years the spraying occurred, including many native species that to the best of his knowledge no longer exist that have always called Lake Ellwood home. Most of these fish species have shorter life spans than our typical gamefish and there is a chance that reproduction failures could have actually caused then to now be 100% absent from the lake. What other species are being affected that he did not study and how will all of the compounded stress on the ecosystem show up long term in the food chain? I am worried that a very big mistake is being made. As a Fishing Club Director, that is why I voted not to support the spraying. Mr. Patton your newsletter calls out two of our directors as being mainly behind the opposition to the herbicide treatments. I, am also concerned about unknown damage that may occur to Long Lake to support this. This was not an easy decision for myself or our club to make, but after considering the information at hand I think this needs to be brought to the attention of the community. I am very thankful of the Long Lake Fishing Club directors that have tried to inform the area of possible problems, we only want what is best for the lake, as I am sure you do also. Matt Kissinger, Long Lake Fishing Club Director As far as the board meeting went, our President was on vacation and our Vice President was in charge. It was a unanimous vote to separate our club from the LLPA, as we feel that our club did not have an equal vote in decisions. We have no problem with weed control on Long Lake. We just ask to consider all options, as far as the fish cribs, we have put cameras down and we have seen an abundance of fish around the cribs, proof that they are successful. We, as the LLFC, have always strived for the betterment of fishing on Long Lake by our continuing to improve fishing, by stocking thousands of walleye. To date, there has been an increase in the amount of walleyes being caught. We will continue this for years to come, that is our mission. Fred Berthlein, Long Lake Fishing Club Director
4 Page 4 George Hudson Fall Fishing Tournament Results By John Hrovat This year s fall fishing classic took place the weekend of September 20 th and 21 st. Saturday was warm and windy. Sunday, after the cold front, brought strong north winds and rain making for a dismal day. Here are a couple of highlights. Thirteen men and women participated with 49 fish being registered. Susan Enders got SKUNKED again (2 nd time in 4 years). Lori Dhein almost jumped out of the boat after thinking she had a snag and boated a 28 ¼ inch Northern along with that ugly 13 inch Bullhead. That sly old Mark Byrum who took 1st place in 2009 with a 23 ¾ inch Walleye landed a dandy 26 ¼ inch Walleye this year. Prizes were awarded for total inches for one fish caught in each of the following species: Walleye, Northern, Bass, Perch, Crappie and Bluegill. Once again no one registered a fish in all six categories. The longest fish caught was Fred Berthlein s inch Northern. The smallest fish caught was Mark Byrum s 5.5 inch Perch. Thanks to all who participated, or helped in this event. It was nice to see new faces at the event. Once again thanks to Bensons Hide A Way for the use of their facilities. Place Name Total Inches 1 st Fred Berthlein nd Mark Byrum rd Lori Dhein th Boyd Stoeffel th Charlie Benson th Brian Ebert Please note in this tournament those small fish really count! As you can see by all the smiles fun was had by all. We hope you all consider entering the tournament next year to join in on the fun. Winners of the LLFC George Hudson Fishing Tournament. The fish registration will start at 6 a.m. and run until 4 p.m. when the prizes will be awarded. This is a great attraction. We are hoping to have some big fish to view in our ice live well (for the special catch and release drawing), as well as other trophy fish hanging from the board. Log onto for complete rules. A new prize will be added to this year s tournament. Ten dollars will be paid for the longest Rock Bass caught. Stop by the Fisheree tent for a chance to win a Vexilar FL-20 Genz Pack.
