1 J a nu a ry Long Lake Fishing Club Incorporated, P.O. Box 303, Campbellsport, WI llfclegend@sbcglobal.net The Long Lake Walleye With Whiskers By Charlie Benson Back on the evening of August 27th, 2016, I had an interesting fishing surprise. I was casting a crankbait around 10:30 p.m. off our big pier when I caught my first Long Lake Catfish. At first I thought I had a big Walleye but no such luck. The fish just didn t want to come in. He rolled on the surface at least twice and continued to go out. When he was out about 150 feet, I kind of panicked. If he got to the Coontail he would be gone for sure. I tightened the drag and pulled that big boy to the pier. A friend grabbed my big net and hooked the plug on the outside lip of the net. After about a minute the fish rolled in the net. So the twenty five minute ordeal was over, going from a huge Walleye to a world record Black Bullhead. 3 Page 3 The Long Lake Walleye from page 1 The split V tail told me I had a Catfish. My best guess is he was 27 inches long and about 12 pounds. Little did I know that I was now under the catfish curse as I have only caught one walleye this fall. He is still out there somewhere waiting to put you under his spell. Speaking of Walleyes, on September 27th, I had the privilege to stock with the DNR 4,235 five to seven inch Walleyes in Long Lake. A few went in by the DNR boat launch, but most were released in two spots. One was about midway between the deep cribs and the old state beach. The other was in the middle of the lake. The fish appeared very healthy and most were six to seven inches. It was impressive. The Pres, Charlie Benson Early Ice By Uncle Crobar Early ice has always been a favorite of mine and still continues to this day. I am constantly watching the long range weather forecasts as cold weather approaches which triggers me to go down in the basement and get the winter fishing gear ready. Many years back while ice fishing with my brother Bruce and dad we met an old couple Mae and John Patrick. The Patricks lived on the far southwest side of the lake. They had been fishing Long Lake since the early 40 s and stayed at an old boathouse on the Miller property when on fishing trips before building their retirement home. They loved ice fishing and Walleyes were the targeted gamefish. John told me it was nothing to have 50 flags go up on a night of fishing. This was gospel truth from him, because in the 70 s he was still getting 50 Walleye per hard water season. The Patricks were good conservationists as 95% of the Walleyes caught were catch and release. They just enjoyed catching them. Getting back to early ice, after getting to know the Patricks they let us access the lake from their property. This really helped because that side of the lake always froze over early usually around Thanksgiving. My family couldn t wait to get out on the lake and safety precautions were always observed. The sights and sounds of early ice always amazed me. After setting up for an evening of fishing and waiting for a flag to go up your senses would take over. On a calm clear night hearing the bells from the church camp on Vista Drive, cows mooing in the distance, or an Owl hooting on the ridge behind us made for a very peaceful night. Then as darkness really took over your eyes turned to the heavens, the Big and Little Dipper would appear in the northern sky then Orion would come up over the eastern shore. If you were lucky maybe a shooting star or two wow it was beautiful, and still is. The only thing that would top that was a flag going up with a Walleye on the end of the line. The Patricks have long since passed away along with my brother and dad. Their memories and myself meeting some really nice people through the fishing club will always keep me coming back to Long Lake. Hopefully early ice is in the near future and maybe you will meet an old timer out on the ice to befriend you and give ya a few pointers. Until then good luck, take a kid fishing and have a Happy Holiday. 4 Page 4 George Hudson Fall Fishing Tournament Results By John Hrovat This year s fall fishing classic took place the weekend of September 24th and 25th. Saturday and Sunday both had easterly winds with Sunday being a gorgeous day. Water temperatures were in the high sixties. Sixteen men and women participated. Sixty-two fish were registered, better than last year s fortysix. The longest fish was a thirty-two inch Northern caught by Mark Pentek. The smallest fish was a four and seven-eighth inch Bluegill caught by Fred Berthlein. Kristie Bartkus finished dead last, getting skunked better luck next year as there is a lot of room for improvement. Thanks to Judy Peterson, who filled in at the sign in table, Benson s Hide A Way for the use of their facilities and all entrants who participated. It is always enjoyable seeing the group get together trying to out fish one another and the good natured ribbing that goes along with it. Prizes were awarded for total inches of one fish in each species; Walleye, Northern, Bass, Perch, Crappie, and Bluegill. Lori Dhein registered fish in all six categories. Place Name Total Inches 1 st Lori Dhein nd Mark Pentek rd Kyle Benson th Jeff Berthlein th Brian Ebert th Tom Peterson Just out of the money was Fred Berthlein with a total of 55 7/8 inches. Hope to see you all next year. Winners of the LLFC George Hudson Fishing Tournament. From left to right: Brian Ebert, Jeff Berthlein, Kyle Benson, Mark Pentek and Lori Dhein.

6 Page 6 LLFC Fisheree 2017 Set for Saturday, Feb. 25th Golfing in January? LLFC Snow Golf Tournament With winter fast approaching, we are gearing up for our annual Fisheree on Long Lake. This event is always a great time to come back to the lake for those who only spend the summers here and get caught up on the changing seasons. Club members will be out on the ice early Saturday morning selling the raffle ticket that will allow you to participate in the fisheree prizes. The fish registration will start at 6 a.m. and run until 4 p.m. when the prizes will be awarded. This is a great attraction. We are hoping to have some big fish to view in our ice live well (for the special catch and release drawing), as well as other trophy fish hanging from the board. Log onto for complete rules. Wisconsin Fishing Record Trout, Brook (outlying) (06/08/1999) 10 lbs 1 oz Length 24.5 in. Lake Michigan, Ozaukee County Stop by the Fisheree tent for a chance to win a Vexilar FLX-28 Ultra Pack. Tickets are only $10 each and only 100 will be sold. The Long Lake Fishing Club is again sponsoring our annual Snow Golf Tournament on Saturday, January 28th (weather permitting). The event has been very popular with area golfers and is always a fun time for families and friends. The nine hole course will be setup on Tittle Lake in front of Benson s Hide-a-Way, Dundee. Tee times can be scheduled from 9 am to 3 pm by calling Four-some play is $20 or play an individual round for $5. Prizes will be awarded for the top two men and top two females with the lowest scores and the top two four-some with the lowest team score. Additional prizes for the both men and women longest drive and longest putt will also be awarded. Registration, food and refreshments will be served inside Benson s Hide-A-Way. To check on the course (ice) condition on the day of the event, call Benson s Holiday Hide-A-Way Ice Fishing Catch and Release Protect the future of fishing; practice catch and release. A fish's body slows down in the winter reducing its need for oxygen. This helps make catch and release during ice fishing highly successful. Remember to handle the fish quickly and gently. Cut the line if the fish swallows the hook. The hook will dissolve inside the fish in a short time.

8 Page 8 Please see below the Notice of Pending Application for a DNR permit of a Rock Reef Fish Habitat in Long Lake. The Long Lake Fishing Club has applied for this permit for our project of creating a Rock Reef Fish Habitat on the East side of Long Lake with riparian owner, Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources, Jason Quast's permission. Notice of Pending Application for Proposed Habitat Structure The WI Department of Natural Resources, Jason Quast, N1756 Hwy G, Campbellsport, WI has applied to the Department of Natural Resources for a permit to place a habitat structure on the bed of Long Lake. The project is located in the SW1/4 of the SE1/4 of Section 13, Township 14 North, Range 19 East, Town of Osceola, Fond du Lac County. The proposed project will consist of constructing a habitat structure for the purpose of improved fish (walleye) reproduction in the lake. The proposed habitat structure s location will be approximately 100 feet from the eastern shore of Long Lake within the riparian zone of the State of Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources property. The GPS coordinates for the structure s four corners are: N W , N W , N W , N W During the winter of 2017, the Long Lake Fishing Club will place on top of the ice one foot of the suggested material (consisting 30% of 2-4 inch diameter rock, 70% of inch diameter rock) in a 30 ft wide by 100 ft long section. The anticipated start date would be when the ice is thick enough to sustain ATV/UTV travel for several weekends of material movement from shore to the desired GPS location. The Long Lake Fishing Club will rope off with reflective and/or caution tape the entire area within 15 feet of the rocks placed on the ice in the winter. Once the ice melts, the rocks will fall to the bottom of the lake creating the rook reef fish spawning structure. During open water seasons, the Long Lake Fishing Club will place a Hazard Warning Danger Rocks buoy at each of the north and south ends of the structure for public awareness and navigational safety. The structure will also lie within the no wake zone of Long Lake. The Department will review the proposal provided by the applicant and any information from public comments and a public informational hearing, if requested. The Department will determine whether the proposal complies with ss and 30.12(3m), Stats., and ch. NR 150, Wis. Adm. Code, and ensure that the required mitigation meets the standards in s (3r), Stats. if the project impacts wetlands. The Department has made a tentative determination that it will issue the permit or contract for the proposed activity. If you would like to know more about this project or would like to see the application and plans, please visit the Department s permit tracking website at and search for WP-IP-NE X11-01T Reasonable accommodation, including the provision of informational material in an alternative format, will be provided for qualified individuals with disabilities upon request. Any person may submit comments and/or request a public informational hearing by ing Jared.Seidl@wisconsin.gov or writing to Jared Seidl, 625 E County Road Y, Suite 700, Oshkosh, WI by U.S. mail. If you are submitting general comments on the proposal, they must be ed or postmarked within 30 days after the date this notice is published on the Department s website. If you are requesting a public informational hearing, the request must be ed or postmarked within 20 days after the date this notice is published on the Department s website.
