1 J a nu a ry Long Lake Fishing Club Incorporated, P.O. Box 303,, WI llfclegend@sbcglobal.net Muskrat Gets A Smack On The Snout By By Uncle Crobar Did I ever tell you about the time Mae Patrick smacked a Muskrat with her jig pole? Read on and I will fill you in. Last winter was the first time in a while I noticed piles of weeds stacked up on the ice where nothing should be. Upon further investigation I realized it was a breathing hole for that small fur bearing rodent the Muskrat. They sometimes use old ice fishing holes as breathing holes by piling up vegetation around it to insulate it thus keeping it open for a necessary gulp of air as they don t have gills like a fish. Getting back to Mae Patrick. She immigrated from County Cork Ireland many years back, and still had a bit of the accent in her voice when I first met her. She was a feisty lovable woman who enjoyed her panfishing. Her husband John (Jack) constructed a nice ice shanty for her to use in the winter which she enjoyed. Back in the 1960 s when you put your ice shack out it usually stayed in that spot all winter due to lack of mobility. You had to keep regular inspections on your shack so it didn t sink down in the ice or drop completely through as long time fishing club secretary Gladys Larson s did many years back on the north end. Fortunately no one was hurt, but they had a heck of a time getting it out. Anyway Mae had an issue with a Muskrat taking up residence in her shanty. Throughout the week every time she entered the shack a pile of weeds was on the floor. Mae was fit to be tied as it was infringing on her fishing time. Well she cleaned up the mess and started jigging for some Gils when up pops the Muskrat. I ll tell you that animal must of had a sore nose because Mae whacked it a few times with her jig pole. The little critter was stunned, but didn t go back down so INSIDE THIS ISSUE Muskrat Gets A Smack On The Snout 1 LLFC Fisheree Ticket Representation 2 Lakes 101 Not All Lakes Are The Same 3 George Hudson Fall Fishing Tournament Results 4 LLFC Fisheree Golfing In January? 6 Upcoming Events 8 Win a Polaris Sportsman 450 ATV The Long Lake Fishing Club s Fisheree raffle is now underway. 3 Page 3 The Muskrat from page 1 Mae clobbered it again. After that she had no more Muskrat problems as it learned a lesson and she got back to doing what she liked, catching those Gils and Perch. When we fished the south end and there was smoke coming out of the Patricks shack, we would say hello and set up shop in the area as we knew it was a good fishing spot. Well we might catch a few then venture over to the shack to see how Mae was doing. She would point to the pile of wiggling pannies on the floor and laugh like heck then invite us in to warm up. It was a pleasure to have known her and her husband. They are truly missed. When you are out ice fishing this season and have a pesky Muskrat annoying you use the Mae Patrick method of getting rid of it and whack on the snout. Good luck in the hard water season. that water enters and exits the lake. The source of a lake s water is vitally important to determine and protect its water quality. Drainage Lakes -These lakes have both an inlet, meaning they are fed by a stream, and an outlet. Fish populations in drainage lakes can vary depending on what is found in the stream. Drainage lakes may have higher nutrient levels depending on the watershed that surrounds the incoming streams. Drainage lakes typically have steady water levels. Seepage Lakes - Seepage lakes do not have an inlet or an outlet. These lakes are fed by rainfall, runoff and groundwater. Seepage lakes reflect the groundwater levels and rainfall patterns in the watershed. Because the lake reflects these, the water level of the lake may fluctuate seasonally. For example, if it is a dry year one may see the water level lower than a wet year. Seepage lakes also tend to have a fish population that is less diverse. Spring Lakes -Spring lakes do not have an inlet, but they do have an outlet. These lakes are fed by groundwater that flows into the bottom of the lake. Often times spring lakes are the headwater of a stream. These types of lakes are fairly common in Northern Wisconsin. Picture of the Fisheree Raffle prize number 2 - Cabin in the Woods Print- Donated by Twohig Furniture. Lakes Not All Lakes Are the Same By Michala Feigal, UWSP Student Lake Tides Vol. 42, No. 4 Fall/Winter 2017 Lakes provide a place for people to relax or play and a home for other mammals, fish, plants, water bugs, amphibians and other organisms. But, not all lakes are the same. Did you know that there are five main lake types? Lake types vary by the way Drained Lakes - Drained lakes do not have an inlet, but do have an outlet. These lakes are fed by precipitation and direct drainage of the watershed. Water levels in these lakes fluctuate depending on the amount of rain in the watershed. If there is not much rain or snow, drained lakes may have very low water levels, sometimes resulting in a dry lake. Artificial Lakes -Artificial lakes are human made. Sometimes these are also called impoundments, meaning there is some sort of dam influence on the waterbody. These lakes are also considered drainage lakes because they have both an inlet and an outlet. These lakes are fed by a river inlet, but fish populations will differ between the impoundment and the river that feeds it.
4 Page 4 George Hudson Fall Fishing Tournament Results By John Hrovat Raise your hands if you like fishing in 90 degree temps, no cloud cover, high humidity, and light winds I didn t think I would get any takers. This year s tourney took place September 23rd-24th and it was the hottest in recent history even some of the fish registered looked pre-cooked as water temperatures were in the mid 70 s. Twenty-two men and women registered, but not all fished due to the heat. Fifty-one fish were registered, less than last year s 62. The longest fish was a 33 1/2 inch Northern caught by Jeff Berthlein. The smallest fish was a 4 7/8 inch Perch caught by Mark Byrum with Tammy Eickermann next in line with a 5 1/8 inch Gil. No one registered fish in all six categories as no Walleye were brought in. Thanks also to Diane Bruendl, who helped at the sign in table, Bensons Hide A Way for the use of their facilities and all entrants who participated. Let s hope for cooler temps next year. Prizes were awarded for total inches of one fish in each species; Walleye, Northern, Bass, Perch, Crappie, and Bluegill. 6 Page 6 LLFC Fisheree 2018 Set for Saturday, Feb. 24th Golfing in January? LLFC Snow Golf Tournament With winter fast approaching, we are gearing up for our annual Fisheree on Long Lake. This event is always a great time to come back to the lake for those who only spend the summers here and get caught up on the changing seasons. Club members will be out on the ice early Saturday morning selling the raffle ticket that will allow you to participate in the fisheree prizes. The fish registration will start at 6 a.m. and run until 4 p.m. when the prizes will be awarded. This is a great attraction. We are hoping to have some big fish to view in our ice live well (for the special catch and release drawing), as well as other trophy fish hanging from the board. Log onto for complete rules. Wisconsin Fishing Record Alternate Method White Bass (06/29/2011) 1 lbs 8.3 oz Length 14.5 in Lake Mendota, Dane County The Long Lake Fishing Club, Inc. was created to protect, maintain, and improve all the environments necessary for present and future generations for the enjoyment of successful fishing on Long Lake, a multi-use lake in the Northern Unit of the Kettle Moraine State Forest, Fond du Lac County, Wisconsin. The Long Lake Fishing Club is again sponsoring our annual Snow Golf Tournament on Saturday, January 27th (weather permitting). The event has been very popular with area golfers and is always a fun time for families and friends. The nine hole course will be setup on Tittle Lake in front of Benson s Hide-a-Way, Dundee. Tee times can be scheduled from 9 am to 3 pm by calling Four-some play is $20 or play an individual round for $5. Prizes will be awarded for the top two men and top two females with the lowest scores and the top two four-some with the lowest team score. Additional prizes for the both men and women longest drive and longest putt will also be awarded. Registration, food and refreshments will be served inside Benson s Hide-A-Way. To check on the course (ice) condition on the day of the event, call Benson s Holiday Hide-A-Way Ice Fishing Catch and Release Protect the future of fishing; practice catch and release. A fish's body slows down in the winter reducing its need for oxygen. This helps make catch and release during ice fishing highly successful. Remember to handle the fish quickly and gently. Cut the line if the fish swallows the hook. The hook will dissolve inside the fish in a short time.
