1 1 August 2012 Issue 6 A Word from the President Hi all, The seafood night was a great success with 36 members attending on the night. The chowder was of the usual high standard and the prawns and seafood platers were enjoyed by all that I spoke too. As asked for at the AGM, the fishing section is offering shirts and jackets for sale to the members. The shirts are $25.00 each and the jackets are $55.00 each. They will only be purchased by the section on an order basis, we will not be holding any stock. More details are else where in the news letter. The next event for the section is to Khancoban. More details are on page 2 as usual. The September event is to Eildon, staying at Bonnie Doon lakeside leisure resort. Contact details are elsewhere in the news letter. Cost for the weekend is $ Target species for the weekend are redfin and trout. You may fish the pondage and the river for a Kilometre downstream of the pondage wall. Tooma dam road is closed, therefore this dam will not be included this time round. Methods that have worked in the past including bubble floating mud eyes near the standing timber, flat lining wing style lures and flat lining CD5-7 Rapalas. Don t forget to work the Rapalas by moving your rod tip forward reasonable quickly then dropping it back until you feel the lure load the rod then repeat the process. Norman redfin tactics should work. When you find them, work the area or stop and cast soft plastics or blade style lures at them.

3 3 Daughterless carp program axed The ABC s Landline reported on 22 June that the MDBA s daughterless carp program has been axed. The timing couldn t be worse, with scientists predicting that several years of above-average rainfall in southern Australia have provided perfect conditions for European carp leading in some areas to a 4,000 per cent increase in numbers. The daughterless carp project was federally funded through the Murray Darling Basin Authority and was touted as offering a future means of carp control. According to the ABC report, the MDBA decided that progress has been too slow and there were doubts that it would ever really be effective. The authority has stated "Whilst we believe the daughterless technology for carp has merit, it is a potentially long term an expensive investment with no guarantee of success." Funding for the project has been stopped since 1 July although the MDBA will continue to fund research into the effectiveness and safety of koi herpes virus. Koi herpes virus emerged in the late 1990s and caused havoc to carp populations in the Northern Hemisphere. The risks it poses to Australian native fish is currently being researched and that work will take years to complete. The daughterless carp program was looking at genetic technology that induces carp to produce only male offspring, leading to the eventual demise of the population. Scientists working on the program claim they had succeeded with the method in laboratory tests on zebra fish and were about two years away from being able to prove that the same method worked on carp. This would have taken only a few hundred thousand dollars to complete, compared to the $4 million already spent. There was also hope that the technology could be applied to other pest species including tilapia and cane toads. Alpine boaters still not getting the lifejacket message A recent campaign to target lifejacket use on alpine waters has found a disappointing number of boaters are still not wearing lifejackets when legally required to, Roads and Maritime Services (RMS) Maritime Acting General Manager Maritime Operations Trevor Williams said. Twelve fines and eight formal warnings were issued for non-compliance with lifejacket laws during Operation Alpine which was carried out from May 17 to 20 on Blowering Dam, Talbingo Reservoir, Lake Eucumbene, Lake Burrinjuck, Khancoban Pondage, Tumut Ponds, Tooma Dam and Three Mile Dam. In all, 120 boaters were randomly stopped and checked by RMS Boating Safety Officers for compliance with safety equipment, especially lifejackets, during the campaign. Mr Williams said boating on alpine waters poses additional hazards to other locations, with water temperatures averaging below 14 degrees for much of the year, and dropping to six or seven degrees in winter. If you unexpectedly fall into the water, you may quickly become incapacitated as your body reacts to the cold shock of immersion, he said. Alpine waters are defined as Lake Burrinjuck, Lake Eucumbene, Lake Jindabyne, Khancoban Pondage, Swampy Plains River, Mannus Lake, Googong Reservoir, Blowering Dam, and all navigable waters contained within the boundaries of the Kosciusko National Park as reserved under the National Parks and Wildlife Act 1974 NSW. Since 1 November 2010, strengthened lifejacket laws in NSW have required lifejackets to be worn more often by those boating on alpine waters. Mr Williams said those who go fishing in small boats such as runabouts represent the biggest group who appear not to understand the new lifejacket laws for boating on alpine waters. There are no exceptions. If you are on a small vessel, then you need to wear a lifejacket at all times, Mr Williams said. Other times lifejackets need to be worn on alpine waters include: By children under 12 years, when in an open area of a vessel 4.8m to 8m that is under way When wearing waders on a vessel When being towed on water skis or other towing devices When canoeing and kayaking When using off-the-beach sailing vessels such as catamarans and centreboard boats When sailboarding When on a personal watercraft (PWC). For more information on when to wear a lifejacket in which circumstances, go to

4 4 Trout stocking delivers best fishing in 30 years Victorian recreational fishers are enjoying the best trout fishing in 30 years thanks to extensive fish stocking programs and the end of the drought. Drought recovery trout stockings are now delivering outstanding results, with young trout released two years ago now providing some fantastic opportunities for the state s anglers. As a result of more than a decade of drought, many lakes with high quality trout fisheries in central and south west Victoria dried up, but when rains arrived in the spring of 2010, many of them filled rapidly and came back to life. Fisheries Victoria together with recreational fishers moved quickly to rapidly stock an extra 187,000 trout into 14 formerly drought-affected lakes and reservoirs. Since then the conditions have been ideal for those fish and their growth rates have been exceptional. As a result, trout fishing in some Victorian lakes and reservoirs is now as good you will find in the iconic trout fishing destinations of Tasmania and New Zealand. There are reports of 75 gram trout released into Lake Bolac in late 2010 being caught 12 months later weighing three kilograms. That is a phenomenal growth rate that is also being reported at a number of other lakes where young trout were released, including Lake Burrumbeet where 2 kg trout are caught regularly. Since 2010, 25,000 rainbow trout have been stocked into Lake Burrumbeet. A further 5000 brown trout will be released into the lake in August. The $231,000 drought recovery trout stocking program was funded from revenue from the sale of recreational fishing licences. The program has provided valuable economic stimulus to drought-affected regions thanks to its effectiveness in attracting an increasing number of recreational anglers to those areas. For a full list of lakes and reservoirs stocked under the program, go to Illegal fishers caught out in South West NSW over long weekend Targeted patrols undertaken by NSW DPI fisheries officers in the State s south west over the June long weekend have resulted in 122 offences being detected and 48 penalty notices being issued. NSW DPI Director of Fisheries Compliance, Glenn Tritton, said teams of fisheries officers worked in conjunction with NSW Police and Victorian fisheries officers to deter and detect illegal fishing activity and provide advice and information to fishers. Almost 900 fishers were checked by fisheries officers in South West NSW over the long weekend, Mr Tritton said. About 86% of those checked were found to be doing the right thing, however that obviously still leaves a large number of people failing to fish responsibly. Fisheries officers issued 48 penalty notices ranging from $75 to $500 for a variety of alleged offences including failure to hold a fishing licence, fishing in closed waters, leaving lines unattended, possession of prohibited sized and mutilated fish, taking crayfish with ova and use of illegal fishing equipment. A range of illegal gear was seized including 41 yabby traps, 17 crab traps, 5 fish traps, 1 drum net, 38 hoop nets and 26 fishing lines. Thirty-two illegally taken Murray crayfish were also seized. Waterways patrolled over the weekend included the Murray, Murrumbidgee, Edward, Darling, Eucumbene and Thredbo Rivers. Mr Tritton said that NSW fisheries officers will continue to target illegal fishing activity in these areas during the colder winter months.
