1 1 July 2014 Issue 6 A Word from the President The calendar for 2014/15 has been finalised and is in the usual place in the news letter. Those going to the first event in 2015 need to book as soon as possible as the venue will only hold the rooms for a short time. Phone numbers on page 7 On this, we do not book the rooms, we only get them to hold a few for us and try to negotiate a better deal for the bulk bookings to help keep the costs down. There is a flyer for a salt water trip in this edition. We need a minimum of 10 people to commit to make this a goer. We need the numbers by the end of this month to allow us to book the accommodation. Contact Ed Merritt or myself if you are interested. Next months event is to Lake Hume. The evening meal will be on the Friday night at the Mother club with a 2pm weigh-in at Bowna reserve on the Sunday. Don t forget to keep the 1st and 2nd of November free for the Lake Hume classic. I need around 30 helpers for the weigh stations. This event provides valuable income to the section, and without your help we cannot make it happen. Our next event is the inter club challenge at Dartmouth. Warm clothing would be a must I think. More on page 2 as usual. 7 members represented the section at the Dart cup. As a team we came a reputable 7th, which isn t to bad considering the winning team had about 15 Congratulations must go to young Bridgette Le Busque for taking out the junior section. Young Ruby Van Ree won a lucky door prize along with a couple of the adult members. Adrian Kent President. For the 16 of us that made our way down the highway, we were greeted with strongish winds on the Friday that made fishing in anything but the sheltered bays very difficult at best. Saturday saw rain all day with only a couple of members braving it for the entire day. I personally only had one hit for the entire day. Sunday, whilst a little drizzly, was by far the best of the three days fish wise with the two boats who braved it both producing fish. Only 8 fish were presented for weigh in on the Sunday. Again, I must thank all the people who provided dish s for the Friday night. The food on offer was excellent as usual. These casserole nights help make the weekend what it is. I would also like to thank everyone who helped the committee clean up after the meals. Results for the weekend are. Men s best bag, Adrian, 2 fish, 1.58Kg. Men s best trout, Gus 540gm. Men s best redfin, Gary, 570gn. Ladies best catch of fish, Nola, 300gm. Girls best fish, Megan. Boys best fish Austin. Well done to all who caught fish.

The event is to be held at Dartmouth on the 25-27th July. There is a flyer on page 5 for the event. We had to cancel this event last year but it will not be cancelled this year. Last time I fished the lake pink and purple were working well around feet down. Cost for the weekend is $10.00 as usual. Tea Friday night will be provided for those staying in the motel.
3 3 Expressions of Interest, Eden Trip The trip is proposed for Saturday 14, Sunday 15 and Monday 16 March 2015 after the Eden Fishing competition and before Easter. Many of our members go to the South Coast fishing at this time of year and could participate as part of their holidays. Fishing can be from your own boat, shore based or fishing charter. The area to be fished will be Twofold Bay launching at Quarantine Bay, also fishing Wonboyn Lake 30 km south, Pambula Lake 14 km north and Merimbula Lake 27 km north. The lakes have been included in case weather conditions are unfavourable in Twofold Bay. The Quarantine Bay boat ramp is located in sheltered waters giving deep water access into Twofold Bay. We propose to base the trip at Shadrack Discovery Holiday Park Eden which is located close to the boat ramp at Quarantine Bay and offers a range of accommodation from self contained units on the beach front for $150 Suitable for two couples, other units $110 suitable for single couples and camping. Discounts are available for group bookings. We would like expressions of interest for this trip by the end of July so accommodation can be secured. Contact Ed Merrett Phone or edmerrett@bigpond.com Fishing charters are to be arranged and paid for by members choosing this fishing option. Freedom Charters operating from Snug Cove at Eden offer a range of charter options ( Those using their own boats have to be aware of the requirement for addition safety equipment in coastal waters. You will require distress flares, V Sheet, and a hardcopy map. NSW Maritime Boating Map 14A covers the area we propose to fish. You will not require an EPIRB for the port limit of Twofold Bay which is west of a line from Boyds Tower to Worang Point (North Head) this area is within 2 nautical miles (3.6 km) of the coast line. A very productive days fishing can be had within the port limits. You can access the snapper reefs north of the bay and the flathead and kingfish grounds south of the bay without going outside the 2 nautical miles limit which would require you to carry an EPIRB. Please check that you boat is safety compliant for coastal waters on
4 4 I have had no reports this month. Members fishing news. If you have been out, please drop me an and I will include your exploits. I will keep your name and exact location out if you prefer. Gus s puzzler Last months answer was a Teeth, well done to those who contacted me with the answer. Here is this months question. With pointed fangs I sit and wait, with piercing force I serve out fate. Grabbing bloodless victims, proclaiming my might; physically joining with a single bite. What am I? If you think you know the answer, give me a call, text, or let me know when you see me. Ph AH please New Murray cod limits proposed to improve fishery Freshwater anglers have 60 days to provide Victorian fisheries managers with feedback about proposed changes to Murray cod size limits that are designed to significantly improve stocks. Fisheries Victoria Executive Director Ross McGowan said more than two decades of fisheries science and some of Victoria's best Murray cod anglers had recently reviewed catch limits. Mr. McGowan said comprehensive modeling had informed the review and suggested Murray cod populations, and stocks available to anglers for harvest, would be much better off under a new slot limit of 50cm to 70cm and a reduced daily bag limit of one fish in rivers. Narrow slot limits are increasingly used around the world to improve the sustainability of long-lived fish and the quality of fishing for anglers, Mr. McGowan said. The current 60cm to 100cm slot limit has improved Murray cod populations over recent years, but scientifically-based fine tuning could do even more. A slot limit of 50cm to 70cm would prohibit the harvest of Murray cod larger than 70cm while allowing the limited take of smaller fish between 50cm and 70 cm. The research suggests that over 15 years, this would significantly improve the sustainability of the fishery, the number of harvestable Murray cod and the number of trophy fish longer than one meter. Murray cod take around 10 years to grow from 60cm to 100cm. Under current regulations they remain vulnerable to harvest for this period. However, Murray cod grow faster when young, taking around three years to grow from 50cm to 70cm, so are vulnerable to recreational harvest for less time. Larger Murray cod are older and more experienced breeders, produce more eggs and contribute more to future generations, so it makes sense to protect their reproductive capacity long-term. The proposed 50cm minimum length would permit anglers to harvest Murray cod at a size better suited to the table (around 2.3kg) and without the unpalatable fat that larger cod are known for. The reduced daily bag limit for rivers is designed to further protect large breeding fish and encourage natural breeding. The bag limit in lakes would remain unchanged at two, given many lake fisheries are stocked annually with Murray cod fingerlings and are thus much less reliant on natural breeding.
