1 1 October 2013 Issue 9 A Word from the President Our next trip is to Dartmouth for the annual inter club challenge with the Alpine Anglers of Dartmouth. The score is currently one apiece and I am keen to make it 2 to 1 in our favour. More information is on page two as usual. The Leigh Martin Mercury Marine Lake Hume classic is not far away. Thankyou to everyone who has volunteered their time. Please don t forget the training night on the 19th of this month. The meal is at 6.30 sharp on the mezzanine floor area of the dinning room, then moving to the sports lounge for the training. The meal is for members whom have volunteered their time for the classic only. The November trip is to Nillahcootie. This will be our first trip to this lake since I have been involved with the club. The lake apparently has some big redfin and some good quality golden perch in it. There is also trout but at that time of the year I would have thought the primary targets will be reddies and yellas. The phone number for the caravan park is else where in the newsletter. The phone number for Talbingo in the last newsletter was incorrect. This was my fault as I supplied the secretary with the wrong number. The correct number is now in there. From all reports, the trip to Talbingo was very hard work with some anglers going home empty handed. Adrian Kent President. Presidents piece. Lake Hume trip Committee. Events Club Next trip Calendar. As one member indicated, it is the first time in a very long time that I was not able to produce a fish. I hope my luck is better for the interclub challenge. Well done to Ray Holley for his bag of 9 fish and Colleen wasn t far behind him. Well done to the pair of you. Friday saw it rain on and off for most of the afternoon. Friday evenings casseroles were of an excellent standard again and this has become a popular feature on the Friday night. Well done to all who provided. Saturday saw the sun shine all day and Sunday was the typical Talbingo with dogs being blown of their chains. Saturday nights meal was at the local restaurant were fine fare of schnitzels, pizza and steak were all on offer. Fishing wise, 90+% of fish were taken on fenders and worms. Only half a dozen or so were taken on other means with no colour being the standout. The majority of the fish caught were Rainbows. Two members tried Blowering for the day, trolling the entire length of a full dam, with no success. Only 24 fish were weighed for the weekend. Results for the weekend are as follow; Men s best bag of fish, Ray, 9 fish, 3.41Kg Men s best Brown, Dirk, 590gm Men s best rainbow, Bruce, 470gm Ladies best bag of fish, Colleen, 4 fish, 1.27Kg Ladies best Brown, Wendy, 540gm Ladies best rainbow, Fiona, 380gm. Ed took out the non category prize. Well done to all who caught fish.

For those staying in the motel there will be an evening meal provided on the Friday at the pub. There will be a meal with the Alpine anglers Saturday and a BBQ on the Sunday. You may weigh 5 fish at 6pm on the Saturday and 5 fish at noon on the Sunday. You may NOT weigh more than 5 fish each day and you must weigh your own fish. Cost for the weekend is $ You may fish Dartmouth and the pondage. I was there 3 weeks ago and pink early in the morning with gold-wing lures with darker colours underneath at 20 feet working well later in the day. Good luck to all who attend and hopefully we do well.
3 3 Victoria sets another native fish stocking record Funding from recreational fishing licence fees and the State Government s $16 million Recreational Fishing Initiative has helped Fisheries Victoria stock a record 2.3 million native fish into the lakes and rivers to improve freshwater fishing opportunities for anglers. This record season was also the third consecutive year that more than 2 million native fish have been stocked. Thirty waterways shared in more than 1 million Murray cod fingerlings last season, of which 520,000 were grown at the Snobs Creek hatchery. This is a production record for Murray cod at Snobs Creek and is the result of improved fish husbandry practices, more broodfish and upgrades to the hatchery s facilities. Other waterways that received native fish last season include Lake Nagambie, Gunbower Creek, Lake Nillahcootie, Cairn Curran Reservoir, Lake Hume, Kangaroo Lake, Taylors Lake and the Goulburn, Campaspe, Loddon, Wimmera, Broken, Mitta Mitta, Avoca and Kiewa rivers. Trout season in rivers now open The trout fishing season in rivers officially opened midnight on Friday 6 September. Trout opening weekend is a significant date in the calendar of thousands of freshwater anglers with the opening of rivers to trout fishing representing a new opportunity to explore Victoria s great outdoors. To celebrate trout opening, Fisheries Victoria and the Eildon community hosted the Goulburn Fishing Festival. On Friday 6 and Saturday 7 September, a variety of free events were held focusing on freshwater fishing and making the most of Victoria s tremendous lakes and rivers. Chinook salmon stockings expand Across Victoria, seven lakes will share in 22,000 extra Chinook salmon thanks to a project funded by recreational fishing licence fees. The seven lakes are Bellfield Reservoir, Lake Tooliorook, Lauriston Reservoir, Lake Elingamite, Bostock Reservoir, Deep Lake and Rocky Valley Reservoir. All the salmon were grown at the DEPI Snobs Creek hatchery near Eildon and are expected to grow to catchable size within 12 months. Recently Fisheries Victoria have been developing Chinook salmon fisheries in lakes Bullen Merri and Purrumbete, near Camperdown in South West Victoria. This year, they have received 20,000 and 25,000 Chinook salmon respectively. In November 2012, 10,000 Chinook salmon fingerlings were released into Lake Bullen Merri. This was the first time Chinook salmon had been stocked into Victorian waters for five-years. The closed season for Murray cod and spiny freshwater crayfish began on Sunday, 1 September The season will reopen on 1 December 2013 and for spiny freshwater crayfish on 1 June The three month closure for Murray cod provides the species with a chance to breed and contribute to future native fish stocks. Anglers who take Murray cod during the closed season face an on-the spot fine of $433 or a court appearance if the matter is more serious. For more information about freshwater closed seasons check the Recreational Fishing Guide at DEPI Fisheries or collect a free copy from your local tackle store or DEPI office. Alternatively, download the free Vic Fishing App for smartphones from itunes or Google Play.
4 4 Zero tolerance approach to boaters ignoring lifejacket laws Roads and Maritime Services Boating Safety Officers (BSOs) will be out in force at boat ramps across NSW from Saturday 21 September with zero tolerance to be shown to boaters not observing lifejacket laws. Roads and Maritime Acting Maritime Director Michael Wright said Operation Ramp Check will be carried out before the official start of the boating season to ensure boaters are educated and aware of key boating safety requirements as they launch and retrieve boats. Boaters must be prepared and understand changes to boating legislation introduced in November 2010 before heading out on the water, Mr Wright said. BSOs will carry out safety checks to educate boaters on lifejacket and other safety equipment, boat ramp etiquette and ensuring navigation lights are correctly fitted. Boaters will be reminded authorities have switched to zero tolerance mode when it comes to ignoring lifejacket rules and penalties will apply. The zero tolerance follows the last two boating season campaigns which reminded boaters lifejackets need to be worn more often and in more situations, depending on the boating activity, size of the boat and age of the person. "Just like seatbelts must be worn in a car, boaters need to understand lifejackets save lives. Lifejackets must be in good condition and either worn or available, depending on circumstances, easily accessible and be the right size for each person on board. Boaters need to ensure lifejackets are worn in times of heightened risk, regardless of the size and type of vessel."
