The news that all but two commercial netters will be handing in their Licences as of April this year, which will only leave 8 long line licences and 2 netters working in the Bay until 2020 at the latest. 530 MAHONEYS ROAD CAMPBELFIELD FOR ALL BAIT AND TACKLE NEEDS PHONE JOE or FRAN on (03) Victoria s home of Haines Hunter boats Yamaha outboards and Mackay Trailers New & Used boats See Phil Pierias at 2/10 Wallace Avenue, Point Cook Ph: sales@portphillipboatingcentre.com.au If anyone has any pictures or fishing reports that they would be happy to share with other club members in future newsletters, please send them to Joe Barresi on or jbarresi1@hotmail.com. Let s hope this fishery improves and we can all benefit from the change, as it did in Western Port when they removed all netting activity. In addition the announcement of scallops being harvested by hand is another good step in looking after the bays weed and grass beds, you would imagine it could only get better. As we see more controversy with the Geelong Star having other species trapped in the nets I don t think it will be too long till we ask for your support and rally together to send it away. Fishing has been really hot and I was lucky enough to have a week on the Marlin. With a really hot bite a few weeks earlier we hoped to do really well but as you all know there are no guarantees in fishing, but we manged to Get one that put a huge smileon our faces. There are some great junior comps coming up so I hope you can bring them along. Life's Short, Fish Hard - Spent Half my life fishing the other half I ve wasted Ray Caruana Above: After plenty of work, the boys were finally rewarded with a beautiful marlin. Well done to Chris Zammit, Ray Caruana and Chris Farrugia. 3 FISHING REPORTS: Local Waters: The whiting are still going strong along the western part of the bay with Werribee still producing good numbers along the Wedge Spit with pipes being the best bait. Evenings are producing more fish than mornings with burley a must to keep the fish around once found. Squid are also being caught in good numbers with Queenscliff and Flinders piers producing quality sizes. Reports of tuna at Portland continue to filter in with Matt Hunt producing quality school fish in close. The odd kingfish continue to be caught in close at Portland and with the warm weather on the way, the Kingfish bite should improve. Freshwater: Lake Mulwala is producing really good Murray Cod with plenty near the magical meter mark being caught. Surface lures before sunrise and after dark are really proving successful. Lake Fyans is already heating up with good quality trout and redfin being caught regularly. Fisheries News February has been a busy month for the fish stocking team. 23 waters have been stocked with 280,980 fish. This includes 160,500 golden perch fingerlings, 120,050 Murray cod fingerlings, 400 catchable rainbow trout and 30 ex brood brown trout. The receiving waters were: Cullulleraine Lake, Broken River, Numurkah Lake, Victoria Lake, Nagambie Lake (including the Goulburn River to Seymour), Sumsion Gardens Lake, Allans Flat Dredge Hole, Tronoh Dredge Hole, Buffalo Lake, Eildon Pondage Weir, Mitta Mitta River, Goulburn River (Goulburn Weir to McCoy s Bridge), Broken Creek (Dip Bridge), Nillahcootie Lake, Benalla Lake, Goulburn River (Murchison), King Lake, Anderson Lake, Sambell Lake, Stanley Ditch Dam, Eldorado Dredge Hole, Seven Creeks and Arboretum Dam. Fish stocking is funded by recreational fishing licences fees and Target One Million. Below : A few recent pictures of what s on offer at Lake Mulwala. Lots of huge fish are being caught there of late, with surface lures after dark doing plenty of damage. Hope to see plenty of members there for the competition. Fisheries News People are reminded that the use of Opera House nets is illegal in public waters in Victoria. There has been plenty of news about at the moment of multiple platypus deaths due to being caught in the nets being set in public waters while fishing for yabbies. If you find one of the nets set in a public waterway, contact 13 FISH. Below: Great news with Fisheries improving the boat ramp for Lake Bullen Merri. This will allow for easier access to the water for many boat users. Yibbida Yibbida! Talking Fishing host David Kramer joined Minister for Fisheries Jaala Pulford and Rex Hunt for a big announcement last week. All but 2 netters in Port Phillip Bay will hand their licences in on 1st April. A historical day for recreational fishing in the bay! Above: A terrific mixed bag of Trout and Redfin caught recently at Lake Fyans. They were caught bait fishing with mudeyes under a float.
