1 October 2014 Issue 9 A Word from the President This months event is to Khancoban. More information elsewhere in the newsletter. Last months trip to Talbingo was cancelled due to the lack of numbers. We need a minimum of 10 adults to make a trip. This left us in a bit of trouble with the place were we stay and in future we will need to pay a nonrefundable deposit to stay there. If you are going to Khancoban please let me or the secretary, if you haven t already done so, know in plenty of time in the event that we have to cancel to avoid getting the accommodation of side. Please be aware that there are changes to size and or possession laws for Murray cod in both Victoria and NSW. The NSW laws come into effect on the 3rd Nov, see attached documents. Presidents piece. Dartmouth Committee. Events Club Next trip Calendar. Next trip. Fisheries news Gus s puzzle & fishing news , Don t forget to keep the 1st and 2nd of November free for the Lake Hume classic. I need around 30 helpers for the weigh stations. This event provides valuable income to the section, and without your help we cannot make it happen. The training night this year is Sunday the 12th October at 6pm in the Banksia room of the mother club. Please advise me if attending or not to allow for catering and to supply weigh station equipment. We will be providing you with a meal for your help. Adrian Kent President. I have spent most of my life fishing, the rest I have wasted (Dick Saunders) Shirts & Adds 6- Birthdays Glenys Stratfold Chris McCann In the last news letter I missed the life members as being financial. My apologies to the three of you. Les Hawkins Garry Williams and Doug Walton Hints and tips for Khancoban We were last at Khancoban in August 2012 with the lures pictured at right getting most of the fish. The Tassie's can simply be trolled but the Rapala should be aggressively worked for best results. A helpful trick to overcome the weed is to connect the line on the Tassie s to your down rigger and run it so the clip is just under the water. This will help prevent the weed getting the rest of the line. When letting your line out, let it out slowly, stopping occasionally to ensure you have not caught weed, particularly if using overheads. With thread lines, cast them and stop the line as soon as it hits the water, more line can then be let out but again do it slowly. Bubble floating with worms or mud eyes can produce some surprising results. Drifting and casting small blades and bibbed lures may also produce fish. Good luck.

Saturday nights meal will be self catered by the club, so please ensure you let us know if attending to allow for catering. For the adventurous amongst us you may fish the following lakes and rivers. Tooma dam, Tumut ponds, Geehi dam and Khancoban pondage. You may also fish the streams, make sure you do so in accordance with the relevant rules as there is a closed section below the wall at Khancoban. Cost for the weekend is $10.00 per adult. See the section on page 1 for some helpful hints to fish this lake.

3 NSW Rule changes Key changes from 3 November Current rule Saltwater A daily bag limit of 10 for the following commonly caught species: Flathead (other than Dusky Flathead), Bream and Tarwhine, Tailor, Blue Swimmer Crab, Trevallies and Luderick. Possession limit to remain at 20 for the above species. Two crab traps and four witches hats/hoop/lift nets per person will be allowed. Freshwater A maximum size limit of 80cm for Murray Cod to provide protection for large breeding fish. Catch and release of large cod will be permitted. The minimum size limit of 60cm will remain in place. The taking of two Murray Cod per person during the closed season within Copeton Dam will be permitted. The spawning closure for Australian Bass and Estuary Perch to be extended to four months (May August) to protect early migrating bass. Note this a zero bag limit closure and catch and release of these species will be permitted during the spawning closure. Permit Yabbies to be taken using five hoop nets per person in Lake Lyell, Lake Wallace and Googong Dam. A strictly regulated pilot program to allow bowfishing for carp to be trialled in 2015 in key locations. To be closely monitored by NSW DPI. Daily bag limit of 20 Possession limit of 20. One crab trap and five witches hats/hoop/lift nets permitted. Minimum size of 60cm for Murray Cod. No take of Murray Cod permitted in any waters during the closed season. Spawning closure for Australian Bass and Estuary Perch for three months (June-August.) Up to five hoop nets per person in Lake Eucumbene and Lake Jindabyne only. Bowfishing not permitted on inland waters.

4 NSW continued Minor changes from 3 November Current rule Saltwater The bag limit of small baitfish to increase to 100 per species. Freshwater Permit fishers to retain yabbies caught in a shrimp trap and shrimp caught in a yabby trap. Bag limit of trout in general inland waters to reduce to 5 five and possession limit to 10. Saltwater and Freshwater Set recreational nets and traps to be marked with the fisher s initial, surname, year of birth and postcode Transhipping fish from one boat to another (except specified bait species) will not be permitted. Bag limit of bait fish: 50 individuals of a number of species permitted. Shrimp caught in yabby trap or yabbies caught in shrimp trap could not be retained. Bag limit in general inland waters is 10 and possession limit is 20. Bag limit in general trout streams and dams is 5 and possession limit is 10. Full name and home address required on set recreational nets and traps. No specific legislation regarding transhipping. An advisory period of three months from the commencement date of 3 November 2014 will apply to allow fishers time to adjust to the new rules. Updated brochures, guides and sticky rulers will be available from your local tackle shop or fishing licence agent from 3 November New recreational catch limits for Murray cod in Victoria New recreational catch limits for Murray cod in Victorian waters will improve the species sustainability and improve fishing opportunities for anglers long term. Recent public consultation indicated support for the introduction of a 50 70cm slot limit and a reduced bag limit in rivers of one Murray cod per day. The current cm slot limit does not sufficiently protect the older, more valuable breeding Murray cod, which are the future of this iconic species. Compared with current regulations, a 50 70cm slot limit is expected to improve sustainability outcomes by 68%, increase the number of large breeding fish by 147% and increase the availability of fish to catch by 12%. The bag limit of two fish in lakes will remain unchanged because most Murray cod fisheries in Victorian lakes are stocked populations, where angler harvest does not pose a sustainability threat. The reduced bag limit in rivers will enable anglers to take one smaller fish for the table, whilst ensuring all large breeders are returned to the water and contribute to future populations. The new Victorian regulations will be introduced for the opening of the Murray cod season on 1 December For more information visit

5 Members fishing news. Dirk fished lake Dartmouth for over 10 fish in a mornings session, keeping only those over 40cm. All were taken on 3 colours of lead using the white clown. A couple of others fished Hume the weekend we would have went to Talbingo with no success. If you have been out, please drop me an and I will include your exploits. I will keep your name and exact location out if you prefer. Gus s puzzler Last months answer was a key board, no one seemed to know this one. Here is this months question. Gentle enough to soothe the skin, light enough to caress the sky, hard enough to crack rocks. What am I? If you think you know the answer, give me a call, text, or let me know when you see me. Ph AH please Five million fingerlings stocked in past year Minister for Primary Industries, Katrina Hodgkinson, says the government has released more than 5.6 million fingerlings, including a record 413,000 bass, into lakes, dams and rivers across the State this past year. Ms Hodgkinson said 2.7 million native fish and 2.9 million trout and salmon have been released under the NSW Government s freshwater stocking programs in 2013 and These fish releases provide huge benefits for regional areas by boosting tourism and providing economic opportunities for regional economies. The NSW Government s Port Stephens Fisheries Institute has produced and stocked a record number of 413,000 bass into 22 dams across the State, including Toonumbar Dam, Glenbawn Dam, Lake Lyell and Tallowa Dam. Successful production of native fish was also achieved at the Narrandera Fisheries Centre, with the highlight being 526,500 Murray Cod stocked into dams from Pindari Dam in the north to Blowering Dam in the south. The Gaden Trout Hatchery in Jindabyne produced brown trout, rainbow trout, Atlantic salmon and brook trout and Dutton Trout Hatchery in Ebor produced brown trout and rainbow trout for fishers to enjoy throughout the New England, Central Tablelands, Southern Highlands, Monaro and Snowy Mountains regions. Ms Hodgkinson said production of fish at the four NSW Government hatcheries and at commercial hatcheries, through the dollar-for-dollar program, is supported by funds from the NSW Recreational Fishing Trusts. In addition to the freshwater stocking program, this summer the DPI will also stock more than four million eastern king prawns in estuaries up and down the NSW coast for the first time, Ms Hodgkinson said.
