4 PRESIDENTS REPORT Well the colder weather is definitely upon us. With the streams now official closed we begin to look back around our local waters being the lakes. It has been good to see and hear of various reports coming from Barkers with some members including myself picking up the odd fish here and there. The fish being landed are from the stocking last year and are easily distinguished with double fin clip. The fish are in good condition and what is also worth noting is the clarity of the water as it continues to rise up over the weed and grasses around the edge. In particular with Barkers don t forget that if you do fish it, regardless of catch or time spent there that a report is sent thru to Steve Charles via the club . This is to enable us to keep records of what is actually happening with the stocking/ fishing which enables us to further talk with the powers to be to ensure a sustainable fishery going into the future. Without this evidence it makes it harder for us as a club to justify what we see as how the fishery is actually fishing. This coming weekend sees a group of members heading over to Lake Fyans for the Goldfields Shield against Ballarat. I wish all those travelling over the best of luck and tight lines. Let s see if we can t bring the shield back to Bendigo. We are also currently trying to work on a couple of additional trips. One we are looking at is a native weekend around Gunbower Creek based at Cohuna. This is looking at being in late August. Another trip which would back on the streams is late October early November is up at Eskdale. This trip plans to be a real good opportunity for those who haven t fished or wish to learn more about fishing streams. The area has a number of streams that are suitable to varying levels of ability, both fishing and physical. Don t forget the Annual Dinner to be held at the Kangaroo Flat Sports Club on Tuesday the 7 th of July at 6.30 pm for a & pm start. If you haven t already let Jeff know please do to ensure sufficient bookings. Damian June 15
5 Fishing Report Barkers Creek Res Finally it seems like Barkers is on the improve! The last month has seen trout moving from mid to late afternoon and taking wets fished close to the surface. Tony and Al had a good session a couple of weeks back, catching multiple fish, Bob Roberts caught a couple of beauties around the 2 lb mark, Damian and I caught a couple around the 1 lb mark and just last weekend Tony caught a lovely brown that would have been 3 lb! All members should get down there and give it a go; catch some fish locally! Successful flies include the Shrek, Alexandra, and Pink Woolly Bugger. If I ve forgotten anyone that also had catches at Barkers, my apologies. However it speaks to the importance of recording your catches. Report in when you fish Barkers, please! Eskdale Leon and I spent a long weekend fishing around Eskdale just before season close. We again had a great trip with loads of laughs, plenty of fish caught and some new territory explored in that area. Knowledge of different streams and access points can be a big advantage which I hope to put to good use in Spring with a club trip back to this region more details to follow! Friday we fished the Little Snowy Creek, Saturday local guide Scottie tagged along with us to the Little Scrubby Creek, and Sunday we fished the Snowy Creek and Lightning Creek. Four streams in three days great fun!!

9 STREAM FISHING NEAR BENDIGO During a recent (infrequent) tidy up of my fly-fishing stuff. I came across a book A guide to The Inland Angling Waters of Victoria. By B.R.Tunbridge and P.L.Rogan, Scientists, at Fisheries and Wildlife Victoria. The book is a comprehensive guide to what to expect to catch in Victorian waterways. My copy was published in I m sure many changes, droughts, subdivisions etc. have occurred since But trout are great survivors! 1976 was about the time I first discovered fly-fishing. So it became, somewhat of a bible for me. I grew up fishing the mid-lower sections of the Campaspe and Loddon rivers for redfin. This book listed the mid upper sections of these rivers and recorded that they held trout. In the main, small brown trout but also rainbows. I spent lots of time searching out new water on the Coliban and Campaspe rivers above lake Eppalock, near Malmsbury and Kyneton. I m not sure if these streams were stocked with trout, but do remember that Lake Eppalock was stocked when it was first filling. I assume that some of the trout in the Coliban and Campaspe came from Eppalock. Also from direct stocking and escapees from the Coliban lakes. The book lists some of the best fishing as being below waterfalls. In the Tyrone Thomas book 100Walks in Victoria he describes a walk to Mitchell s Falls on the Campaspe river at Barfold. The walk commences at a bridge on the Redesdale Kyneton road. The falls are downstream of the bridge. It is a spectacular walk, there are many geological features. Tessellated pavement, a deep gorge, and in winter a spectacular waterfall. Downstream of the falls a small creek Pipers Creek joins the Campaspe River. Pipers Creek was known to hold a good population of rainbow trout. Another waterfall, Turpins Falls is closer to Kyneton Another of my favourite haunts was the Coliban River, upstream of Lyles Bridge on the Eppalock-Redesdale road. I caught my first trout on a fly here. There is another bridge access on the Redesdale-Sutton Grange road. Then there are a few access points near Metcalfe and Taradale. I remember many years ago, some BDFFC members walked along this section of the Coliban spotting trout. We were surprised at the numbers of small trout in the river. Over on the Upper Loddon, the section of the river at Glenluce held trout. From there to Cairn Curran Reservoir, especially near Newstead was trout water, where the wonderful Jim Crow Creek joined the Loddon R. There were usually trout to be found. I assume there is still a population of brown trout in Jim Crow Ck. Droughts and pollution may have taken their toll. It is worthwhile exploring the small streams. Most are overgrown in parts, but if you adopt the Rob Roles flick technique, opportunities will open up. Please remember to ask landowners permission to cross their land. There are many more creeks to explore. My favourites were Jim Crow Creek and the Coliban R.. REMEMBER The Season is closed Good Luck, Joe Singe
