One features Czech Nymphing and the other a bit on everything. October Activity Meeting The presenter for this evening in October is Trevor Hausler, formally the Water Watch Coordinator for the Merri and Moonee Ponds Creeks. As coordinator, Trevor supported a number of community groups that monitor the creeks using physical/chemical testing and macro invertebrate surveys. The talk, supported by a video presentation, will cover the main groups of invertebrates found in our waterways and their importance as indicators of stream health. He will focus mainly on those groups of interest to fishermen. Be assured, this will be an informative presentation. RED TAG NEWSLETTER September 2015

2 Vale Irene Ann McCaughey Members will be saddened to learn of the passing of Irene Ann McCaughey, wife of Red Tag life member Vin McCaughey. Vin joined the club in the early 1960s, and like most of the ladies of that era his wife Irene was at his side, along with their sons Stephen and Peter at almost every available social gathering, family weekend, and the Stawell Fly In. A fun loving person that had been a keen hiker and snow skier, Irene was diagnosed with Motor Neuron Disease (MND) in late 2012, and died 19 August This is a sad loss to Vin and his extended family, and the Red Tag Club. The following Red Tag members, John & Win Trengove, Harold & Mary Chessum, Geoff & Shirley Newman, John & Marlene Foy, Roger & Helen McKnight, Barry & Valerie Whelan, Brett Jones, and Steve McCormick, along with ex members, Peter Hayes, Barry & Loris Brown, Brian & Veronica Fennessy, and Libby Maynard, a friend of the club, attended the funeral. One of many items considered was the retrieve of a wet fly when fishing a lake. Put simply, Philip believes that the retrieve should imitate a non-escaping food source given that it is all about the trout making an energy profit from any prey it captures i.e. energy consumed over energy expended He suggested a slow figure of eight retrieve was the best method for a wet fly. This method was duly applied the following afternoon at the Upper Coliban reservoir in warm/ bright conditions with immediate results - a 35 cm brown trout. It may have been coincidence - it may not. Either way it is worth a try. John Trioli October Fly Fishing Trips X Stawell Fly In October at Lake Fyans, Stawell In existence for 40 years, this friendly weekend attracts fly-fishers and their families from many 2015 Wastell Trophy Saturday 18 October Sunday 19 October The Ballarat Fly Fishers Club invites Red Tag members to vie for the 2015 Wastell Trophy. On Friday the 26th of June, I made my way up to Lake Fyans Holiday Park in the Grampians. I was really looking forward to a break away, and the weather was looking promising. I arrived at my cabin at about 3.00pm. Niki, Anthony, Mike and Tim arrived around 7:30pm via a pub dinner in Ararat. We had a meeting in the Community Room at 8.00pm where we received our instructions for the weekend's competition. On Saturday morning, we made our way to the Boat Ramp. We had to be there at about 7:30am, be in the boats at 7:45 and at our starting point somewhere on the lake for an 8.00am start. Each boat had chairs up the front and back, which you would cast from. The water looked liked glass; it was a bit overcast, but very very cold. I was in a boat with a bloke by the name of Daniel. I was watching how he was flicking his RED TAG NEWSLETTER September

5 line, swinging it back and forth 3 to 4 times and then it literally zoomed out onto the water reaching at least 50 yards or so. He had a few touches as the line was coming into the boat, but was not able to nail the fish! At one stage he had to change his line, I was so impressed with what I saw; it only took at least 5-10 seconds to change it. I never had any touches, but was enjoying the scenery and learning lots of things. Anthony Urban was lucky enough to land a fish in the first session. The only one for Team Red Tag. When the morning was over, we only had an hour and a half for lunch. We made our way back to our cabin for some hot food. On the menu were some delicious Burgers. We didn't think it would take that long to cook, boy were we wrong! By the time they were ready we only had five mins to eat it! The afternoon session started at 12.30pm and finished at 3.30pm. Not many fish were caught by the members; it was a tough day but an enjoyable one. That night we had dinner at the Roscoe's Bistro, and met up with the other members of the competition. They were a really pleasant bunch and very helpful in all aspects of fishing. Sunday morning was looking promising; it felt warmer in the air. Again, we had an early start and we were to finish a bit earlier on this day, because people were going to make their way home after the comp. The sun was out, and I was really enjoying the sunshine so much, I fell asleep! I woke up just in time to hold on as the boat was moving off to a new spot! Michael Nolan and Tim Shannon fished the session together and Mike managed to pick up a fish in a very tough session for all. Lunchtime came around, we were a bit better organised this time, and had cooked the lunch the night before so we had plenty of time to eat it. The end result of the 'Ashes' competition was won by South Australia, I think their points were 1200 and Victoria was A great effort by all. Congratulations to David Jarman, a former Red Tag member, who won the competition. I stayed on for another night. It was a most memorable weekend with good company. I will definitely return here again for another competition. Janie A Very Friendly Fishing Competition On Sunday 9 August, members from three clubs competed for the Tri Clubs Trophy and the Gerry Bolt Trophy at Newlyn Reservoir, Hepburn Lagoon and Dean Reservoir. All up there was 20 in attendance, eight from Yarra Valley and six apiece from Southern and Red Tag. Although The water levels were very low and the fishing wasn't flash, all competitors had a great day out, apart from the Yarra Valley bloke that got bogged to the axle on an adventure across the old road, which was out of the water but rather sloppy at the east end. The Tri-Clubs and Gerry Bolt trophies went to the Southern member Steven Clements who caught and released the only fish landed, a beautiful 4lb Newlyn Brown. We were also paid a visit from Life Member Russell Dodds and ex member John Lanchester, (the creator of the fabulous Tom Jones fly) who joined the Tag in 1972, and three fishing inspectors.
