1 Tight Lines June 2017 The monthly newsletter for the Red Tag Fly Fishing Club. Taponga/Big River Trip Early Friday morning after having the car packed the night before I drove out east, to pick up Dan Mamrot. We wanted to head up to big river early to check the possibility of an early morning deer stalk. We did have a scout out but spotted no deer... Now time to fish, we had a fish on the big river about 15 minutes drive from the cabin. At around lunchtime after an unsuccessful fish we headed to the cabin to find Tony Ryan, but no keys and the cabin still locked up. After a while I took a walk and found Janie, I got the keys and we set up the cabin, and got a fire going. I had a quick look at the Taponga, and Big river and did see fish rising in the Big. Dinner that night was full of laughter with plenty of drinks flowing, including Vin s kumquat liquor which was a hit. Dan s dad Ed had a great game to play which started with telling stories about the most stupid thing you have ever done. I won't share any stories. You just had to be there. The next day Dan and Ed got an early start, followed by Craig and Sam, then Bill and Vin heading off. Peter and Adam arrived at the cabin and headed up stream on the Taponga. Tony and I had a crack fishing the Taponga walking straight from the cabin. The Taponga was one of the most beautiful streams I have ever had the pleasure of walking up and fishing, but the fishing was slow and in about four hours only two fish landed. We did see a couple of rising fish, but both fish fell to an evil olive nymph. Later than evening Tony and I went for a walk down the Big and on the way back Tony saw a rising fish right by the cabin and we headed down and I put on a small parachute Adams. After three casts the fish was landed, a nice brown trout that's three for the day. The night was full of plenty of booze, and sausages sizzling on the potbelly stove and stories of the days fishing. Craig had around the thirteenth fish mark, and Sam with 2 in the Big river. No one else had that much success fishing.

2 On the Sunday I still wanted to persist with the Taponga, so Adam and I walked down to the spot I stopped at the previous day. On almost the first cast I caught the smallest rainbow on a size 12 parachute adams the fly was 1/8 the size of the fish. After walking a lot of water I caught a bigger rainbow on a nymph. Then it was time to head back to the cabin to help clean up and pack up. On the way back to Melbourne Peter, Dan, Adam and I stopped to fish the Goulburn near Blue Gums caravan park. We were lucky enough to be right in the middle of a hatch, with swallows flying all over, and fish rising everywhere but only two fish landed in a few hours of fishing. Peter had a nice one around a pound and a half, mine was a bit smaller. We all felt we should have done better with the conditions we had. Then we loaded up the cars and headed home! 4 Library News Hi everyone Just a reminder that the library is very much up and running so please feel free to borrow. Latest acquisitions include the following: The Last Wild Trout by Greg French Affirm Press 2016 In The Last Wild Trout, Greg French explores the last truly great and most coveted trout fisheries left on the planet. Roaming the final frontiers of trout fishing, Greg visits twenty locations including Tasmania, New Zealand, Iceland, the British Isles, Mongolia, Slovenia, British Columbia, Wyoming, California, Nevada and Hokkaido. Each chapter deals with a unique species or subspecies of wild trout, and tells a compelling human narrative set against a backdrop of conservation. Photo sections and taxonomy notes complete the picture in this fascinating book. Reflecting on the complexity of humanity s interactions with pristine natural environments and threatened fisheries, The Last Wild Trout is a reminder from one of the world s best fishing writers of the beauty and importance of nature in all of our lives. Please note that the cover is slightly damaged resulting in the last wild discount from Readings Bookshop. The Seven Rivers by Douglas Stewart Allen and Unwin Originally published in 1966 this is a re-print by Allen & Unwin, The classic account of fly-fishing in Australia and New Zealand. As Stewart makes clear, fishing is about much more than fish. 'Though there is a chapter about swordfish in this book, another about snapper, and even a piece about pig hunting,' wrote Douglas Stewart, '[this] is mostly a book about trout-fishing. I wrote it simply for the pleasure of going fishing again in retrospect along my favourite rivers.' Douglas Stewart loved fishing, but it was the wily trout that haunted his dreams. Bringing a poet's eye, a sense of whimsy and a generosity of spirit to this classic and celebratory account of fly-fishing in Australia and New Zealand, Stewart proves that even the ones that got away are worth writing about. The library is open every club night. If you have any donations, please contact me first. David Honeybone Page 3

7 Dog Hill Annual Fishing Competition A strong contingent of Red Tag members made their way up to Eildon over the weekend of 21 and 22 May to take on the members of the Northern Fly Club for the Royal Coachman Trophy. Vin and Tony went up early on Thursday to set up camp at the Eildon Pondage Caravan Park and quickly started to find out where the fish were (or weren t). The rest of the team, Bill, Barney, Janie, Ross, came up Friday arrived to be greeted by a wet drizzling day which made fishing somewhat challenging. Peter, Sam, Craig and David came up on Sat morning. Friday was all about where are you going to fish on Sat and Sun? A very successful and enjoyable Planning Meeting was held in Bill and Barney s cabin on Friday night where our battle plans were drawn up over quite a few lubricants. The full crew were rearing to go early on Saturday, with Ross trying to spot some early risers on the Pondage beside the Park that Vin had spied earlier. The Pondage was very full with few casting areas available and the Goulburn was flowing at a meager 150 ml/day. Would we be able to find any fish?? Peter and Ross decided to circumnavigate the pondage on foot and spied several large trout that proved elusive. Most others decided to fish the Goulburn downstream. The weather was good and most people were able to land fish, though many were on the small side, with few being able to reach the 25cm mark to count for the Comp. (it was for the longest fish). Barney and Janie though managed to bag a fish each of 36cm so we were on the board. Marshall made an appearance late Sat afternoon with a tale of the one that straightened his hook in the pondage! We had a meal at the Pub on Sat night then joined three of the members from Northern for a few drinks around the campfire. We arose to a good but cool, Sunday morning and headed out again. Most again were successful in landing fish and there were more stories of big ones that were just missed. By the end of the competition, Red Tag has the Royal Coachman Trophy back in the club after a 5 year hiatus. Thanks Vin for being the organiser for this terrific weekend with great company and good fun. Barney Stephens Page 6

8 On the Web Downloaded from the internet Red Tag member Donna Cardwell who lives up at Mitta. This Brook Trout caught several weeks ago on the Thredbo River. The estimated weight is 8lbs plus. Caught and released. NICE ONE DONNA!! This is one mammoth fish! This whoppa 16.5lb brown trout caught from the banks of the pondage inside the park! Cheers, Jon Page 7

The club will ask a small fee of $2 per person attending fly tying night to cover materials. All equipment is provided but you are welcome to bring your own. Come along get some fur, foam and feathers stuck in your teeth. The club like to offer our new (and old) fly tiers the opportunity to purchase fly tying equipment kit at a discount rate.
