1 President PO Box 5095, Alphington, Vic Secretary TBA (web) John Trengove ( ) Newsletter April at Red Tag Activity Meeting Wed 3 April at 7.30pm It s time to revisit those poorly tied knots. With demonstrations from the more experienced guys and plenty of sample cord for you to play with, you ll never lose a trophy trout again! Come along and join in the fun. Club Fly Fishing Trip Duration: One entire week more or less Date: 6 to 14 April Venue: Mitta Mitta River and the smaller local streams District: North East Victoria Camp at: Magorra Caravan Park at Mitta Mitta. Caravan and camp sites available. Site bookings, phone the manager (02) Trip Coordinator: Geoff Newman or Note: There is no fuel at Mitta (and there hasn t been fuel at Dartmouth for a few years) but there is fuel at Eskdale, both at Murray Goulburn and the store. Also, local club member Donna Cardwell is as usual well stocked up with fly fishing gear for sale. Fly Casting Various activities are scheduled. Refer to the calendar on the last page of this newsletter. Fly Tying Fly tying is having a rest until after Easter. Snippets Learning to Fly Fish Red Tag will shortly commence working on an induction program for new fly fishers and we need your assistance. Put yourself in the shoes (waders?) of a potential new fly fisher. You ve heard about Red Tag and rocked up to a monthly meeting. Ok, so what happens next? How do you make the transition from someone who has no gear or experience to someone who can independently catch trout on a fly? Got some ideas? Please send them to the Red Tag mailbox. New Red Tag Website Due to a change in hosting arrangements, Red Tag is taking the opportunity to overhaul its website. Bill Jackson has taken on the role of head of operations and is overseeing the redesign and rewrite. It will be online in a few weeks and we will be asking for your feedback. Red Tag Librarian Did you miss your calling in life? Given your time again would you try something new? Well, it s not too late! We are looking for a librarian, ie someone to check in/out books and electronic media once a month at our activity meetings. It sounds simple because it is simple. Let Geoff Newman know if you can help out. Adrenalin Flies During Brian Kent-Hughes recent visit to Tasmania he met a local fly fisher by the name of Glenn Szalman. Glenn, who runs a business called Adrenalin Flies, offered Brian plenty of local advice including donating a lovely box of flies to the Club. Refer to the Sponsor s page for a link to Glenn s website. Casting Notes The Jack Myles Open Distance Trophy, scheduled for 18 May, has been cancelled. The Victorian Casting Championships, scheduled for 25/26 May, will be hosted by Ballarat Fly Fishers. Paddys Corner The Aboriginal Land Claim for the Paddys Corner Reserve on the Thredbo River has been dismissed and the Monaro Acclimatisation Society (MAS) will be installed as Trustee Managers of the reserve. The MAS will now be seeking funds to upgrade Paddys Corner Reserve and will also be endeavouring to contact the local Aboriginal Land Council to consult with them over the management of the reserve. On behalf of the MAS I wish you all good fishing and I hope your access to the Thredbo River through Paddys Corner Reserve is respected as a privilege. Steve Samuels, President, Monaro Acclimatisation Society Inc. Page 1

Long playing leads to metabolites, such as lactic acid, building up in the muscles and this kills fish. The use of a wide-mouthed net to minimise handling. The use of barbless hooks. A pair of pliers is all that is needed to crimp the barb. The use of artery forceps or slim-jawed piers for removing hooks. Care in handling fish: wet the hands first, avoid the gill area, do not squeeze the stomach, and take care not to rub off scales. Holding the fish belly-up often quietens it. Take care not to drop the fish from height when taking a photograph. Once the hook has been removed, hold the fish back in the water, head facing upstream if fishing a river, and do not release until it begins to gently struggle. If possible, it is best to remove the hook with the trout still in the water. If the fish is bleeding, especially from the gills, then its chance of surviving is considerably reduced. An open letter to: The Red Tag Fly Fishers Club Inc. from John Trengove Dear Vice President, Geoff Newman, Past President Brian Kent-Hughes, the Executive, the Committee, and Red Tag Members, I reflect back to the year Driving home from work one Friday night in June 1994 and listening on the radio to the Rex Hunt fishing show, I heard that the Australian Fly Casting Championships were to be held in the southern suburbs of Melbourne. Not previously aware of such an event, I thought it would be worth attending, and on arriving home mentioned it to my wife Win. Further enquiries at the Box Hill Compleat Angler provided the exact venue, and the following weekend saw me enthusiastically on the way, early on a Saturday morning with cut lunch, to attend this auspicious event. In my mind s eye I had pictured a large crowd, possibly queuing to get into a grassed arena surrounded by a white picket fence, with the tournament taking place out in the middle. I wanted to be early to get a good seat, and not be back too far. I had even taken my field glasses. On the way I was pondering how much it would cost to gain entry. Well as it turned out there were no crowds, no charge, no picket fence, but open parklands with a small group of contestants competing in distance casting, and virtually no spectators. Despite this non-conformance of my mental picture I had a most enjoyable day and returned the next day to see the accuracy casting on water. I was handed some information about a fly fishing club, and such was the beginning of my association with tournament casting and my subsequent membership of the Red Tag Fly Fishers Club in September For someone fly fishing for many years who was not interested in joining a club, it has turned into being a major interest in my life and the making of new and lasting close friendships. Twelve months after joining, and following the 1995 Annual General Meeting, I made the innocent error of asking if there was anything I could do to help Life Member Charlie Brittain suggested that as the club required a secretary I should take it on! In August 2013, it will be eighteen years since I took Charlie s advice, and at oft times, although challenging the wisdom of it, I have felt very much part of and involved in the life of the club. However, I feel the time has now arrived, and is my obligation to timely advise you, that I will not be accepting re-nomination as Secretary and Public Officer of the Red Tag Fly Fishers Club at the end of this current term in August This is something that has exercised my mind for a little while, and has not been an easy decision, but as a Life Member of Red Tag, it is my hope that I will still to be able to contribute to the club, now celebrating its 80 th year. It will be very different sitting on the back benches so to speak, but I am sure the view will match and remain that of my first encounter of Yours sincerely, and with somewhat mixed feelings, John S. Trengove, Secretary, Public Officer, and Life Member Page 4
