3 PREVIEW The Presbyterian College women s golf team will be returning seven letterwinners from last year s roster in addition to four freshmen. The team is scheduled to play in 11 tournaments in four states. Seven will be familiar courses while four are new additions to the improved schedule. The Blue Hose return two seniors in Amanda Hamlett and Blair Weatherly. Last season each saw equal action in the fall and spring, with Hamlett traveling to four tournaments and Weatherly two. Hamlett had one top-5 finish and led the team at the Boscobel Intercollegiate with identical personal-best rounds of 77. Her tournament score of 154 stood up as the team s best two-round score for the season and tied the school record. Juniors Kasay Holbrook and Carrie McClenaghan are entering their third seasons of collegiate golf. Holbrook saw action in eight total tournaments, leading the team once at the Jacksonville University Classic (159; 77, 82). Similarly, McClenaghan saw time in seven tournaments while leading the team at the Mimosa Hills Intercollegiate (156; 78, 78). The sophomore class includes Kim Carpenter, Kyleen Carpenter, and Micah Dowling. Kim Carpenter competed in seven tournaments last season and hit a second round of 73 at the Big South Championship to establish the school record. Kyleen Carpenter competed at the Boscobel Intercollegiate where she tied for 33rd and finished fourth on the team (171; 84, 87). Dowling had two top-ten finishes and competed in all nine tournaments last season. While leading the team at five tournaments, she established the school record for three rounds (234; 78, 80, 76) at the conference tournament. Morgan Bentley, Kalie Goodman, Mary Kathryn Linder, and Jennifer Paden make up a very strong and capable class of freshmen for the Blue Hose. Bentley was named valedictorian as well as first team all area. Goodman won various tournaments throughout her career, establishing a best round of 73 her sophomore year. Linder was a member of Oconee County s team that finished in the top three at the GHSA 3A State Championship every year. Her senior year she shot a round of 78 to finish sixth and help her team win the state championship. Paden also won various tournaments throughout her career. Her senior year she was team captain, MVP, all-district, and all-region. Our women s team has come a long way in a hurry, head coach Thomas Addison said. This year we ve added another four talented golfers to the squad and improved the strength of our schedule. If we continue to work hard and improve from week to week, I expect us to be in good shape during the spring. The Blue Hose will open their fall season with a trip to the Great Smokies Intercollegiate in Waynesville, N.C. from September The annual event is hosted by Western Carolina at the Waynesville Golf Course. PC finished 14th and were led by Dowling s collegiate best round of 75. From September 23-26, PC will travel to the Sea Trails Intercollegiate in Sunset Beach, N.C., hosted by Elon. Addison will then take his team to a more familiar course when they travel to the Winthrop Women s Invitational from Oct Winthrop University will host the event at the Rock Hill Country Club in Rock Hill, S.C. The Blue Hose last played at Rock Hill in March of 2010 when they finished sixth with a teamrecord three-round score of 983 (334, 322, 327). PC will then travel to the 2010 Boscobel Intercollegiate in Spartanburg, S.C. from Oct The event will be hosted by Wofford College at the Boscobel Golf Course in Pendleton, S.C. Last year, Hamlett finished fifth and tied the program s record for two-rounds. The Presbyterian College men s golf team will be returning six lettermen from last year s roster in addition to a freshmen class of four talented golfers and one redshirt freshman. The team is scheduled to play in 10 tournaments across three states. Seniors Kent Crymes and Rob McRae will provide the team with experience and leadership while also challenging for spots at the tournaments. Crymes saw time at two tournaments last season, including the Big South Championship tournament to end the season. McRae competed in five total tournaments for the Blue Hose, finishing second on the team three different times. Evan Phillips and John Solms return to start their third seasons of collegiate competition. Phillips played in two fall tournaments and all five spring tournaments last season. He led the team on two occasions, the Wexford Plantation Intercollegiate and Cleveland Golf Palmetto Intercollegiate. Solms played as an individual at the CSU Fall Invitational and finished tied for 34th. Sophomores Det Cullum and Matt Sizemore did not see many rounds of competition due to the strength of the team. Yet, Cullum tied for 34th at the CSU Fall Invitational. Sizemore tied for 13th at the same tournament as an individual. He returned to competition at the Big South Championship to end the season. His first round score of 65 was the tournament low, the second lowest in school history and a Division I record for the Blue Hose. His three-round score would have placed him 10th if the program was not still in transition. Four true freshmen and one redshirt-freshman will be vying for spots in the tournaments as early as this fall. Andrew Garner is returning after being redshirted last season. Colt Crymes, Carter Davis, Dylan Murray, and William Sigg make up another talented class of freshmen for the Blue Hose. I m excited for the strength of our schedule and think every tournament has a chance to be a big one for us, head coach Thomas Addison said. A couple freshmen should compete for spots, and the leadership of our upperclassmen will help everyone continue improving and excelling throughout the season. PC will open the fall season with a familiar trip to the Country Club of South Carolina in Florence, S.C. to compete in the 2010 Raines Development Invitational from September The annual tournament is hosted by nearby Francis Marion University. To end its fall season, Addison will take his team to the Kiawah Island Intercollegiate on Oct. 31 through Nov. 2. Charleston Southern University hosts the event at the Turtle Point Golf Club on Kiawah Island, S.C. 4 MEET THE BLUE HOSE Thomas Addison Head Coach Sixth Season John Farmer Assistant Coach Fourth Season Thomas Addison, a 2001 graduate of Presbyterian College, enters his sixth season as his alma mater s head golf coach. Addison replaced his father, Tommy Addison, at the helm of the Blue Hose golf program after serving as an assistant coach for two seasons. The elder Addison retired in 2005 after serving as head coach for 13 seasons. It is a privilege and honor to coach golf at Presbyterian College, Addison said. I have watched the program grow over the last 17 years. We are building a competitive women s program and continuing the outstanding record of our men s program. Since taking over the reins of the PC men s golf program, Addison has coached the team to several first place finishes and numerous top fives. He was named the South Atlantic Conference Coach of the Year in Addison has built a solid reputation and a competitive program as the Blue Hose are still transitioning into the Big South Conference and NCAA Division I. Addison is a former three-year letter winner with the Blue Hose. During his playing career, he earned All-South Atlantic Conference honors for three straight years ( ) while also earning SAC All-Tournament honors in 2001 and SAC Academic Honor Roll selection in As an athlete, he helped lead the Blue Hose to the 2001 Food Lion/SAC Tournament title and three straight trips to the NCAA Division II National Tournament. He served as team captain during the 2000 and 2001 seasons. The team voted him MVP in 2000 and Addison earned the program s Scotsman Club Achievement Award in Prior to returning to PC, he spent three years as an assistant golf professional at Musgrove Mill Golf Club located in Clinton, S.C. Addison earned a B.S. degree in political science from Presbyterian College in Thomas and his wife, Katherine Johnson `03, live in Laurens and have a son, William, born on February 16, John Farmer, a 1974 graduate of Erskine College, is in his fourth season as the assistant golf coach at Presbyterian College. Farmer joined the Blue Hose in 2007 and works primarily with the women s golf team, which was founded in My three years coaching at PC have been very rewarding. I ve thoroughly enjoyed working with the women s program and helping it grow into a competitive squad within the Big South Conference and Division I teams. Farmer was a letter winner at Erskine College. After his graduation, he began working as a teacher and coach within the Clinton Public School District. During his 28 years of service, he coached many young golfers including head coach Thomas Addison while at Clinton High School. In 1980, Farmer earned a Masters in Education Administration from Clemson University. He later went on to earn an Ed.S. degree from the University of South Carolina in Farmer is married to his wife, Melody, and they have one son, John. WHAT IS A BLUE HOSE? A Blue Hose is a fierce Scotch-Irish warrior. If you have ever seen the movie Braveheart, you have seen a true Blue Hose. Despite this depiction, it still has been asked many times where Presbyterian College received its Blue Hose nickname. Several rumors exist and Ray Frank in his book, What s In A Nickname delved into the subject. Frank discovered that there were many opinions. One story had it that the Presbyterian Scotch-Irish wore blue stockings in the Puritan beginnings of our country. Another said that a fierce war-like band of Scotch-Irish named the Hose painted their entire bodies blue before going into battle. Yet, probably the true story lies in a letter dated June 15, 1935, written by then PC athletic director Walter Johnson to an inquiring English professor in Virginia... (quoting from Walter Johnson s letter) It was about the second or third year, 1915, if I remember right. I think it happened this way: I changed uniform colors to blue, wearing blue stockings and jerseys, and some sports writer started calling in his articles the Presbyterian College teams the Blue Stockings.... in later years Stocking became abbreviated to the Hose, particularly in newspaper headlines, and was more or less officially adopted by the student body in the 1950 s. All the PC media guides since 1996 continued to elaborate on the issue, quoting an article by Ben Hay Hammet entitled The Spirt of PC. The piece by Hammet articulated that, Johnson always insisted on the fact that his players wear long blue socks similar to stockings (after all, there were White Sox and Red Sox in baseball). Coach Johnson s explanation may simply be coincidental to the fact that the phrase Blue Stocking Presbyterian goes back informally quite a few years in the denomination s history. Nevertheless, PC s athletic nickname was shortened to Blue Hose in Presbyterian College Golf

He later graduated magna cum laude from Harvard University in 1972 with a Master s of Divinity degree, being named valedictorian and baccalaureate speaker of his class. Griffith received his Ph.D. degree in Intellectual Development from the University of Syracuse in He and his wife, the former Nancy Shell, are the parents of two sons: Matthew, a graduate of Davidson College, and Chris, a graduate of Dickinson College. Brian Reese, formerly Vanderbilt University s associate director of student athletics, has been named the new director of athletics at Presbyterian College. PC president Dr. John Griffith made the announcement on Monday, April 5, following a national search that attracted more than 80 candidates. I am enormously pleased to announce that Brian Reese has agreed to serve as our new director of athletics, Griffith said. His experience at Vanderbilt underscores the importance we place on academics for our student-athletes and we believe he will be a perfect fit for our community. Reese has served at Vanderbilt since 2002, when he first joined the school s athletics staff as director of football operations. In 2004, he was named director of sports operations at the university before being named associate director of student-athletics in Prior to joining the athletics staff at Vanderbilt, Reese was the head athletic trainer at Furman University from 1995 to 2002 and assistant director of sports medicine at the Citadel from 1989 to He is a 1986 graduate of Grand Valley State College in Allendale, Mich., where he earned a bachelor s degree in physical education. He also earned a master s degree in athletic administration from the University of Tulsa in Oklahoma in Reese has personal ties to PC; his wife attended PC while his brothers-in-law - Michael and William - were respective members of the Blue Hose football and baseball teams. During visits to campus both with family and as part of his job, Reese said he felt attuned to how special a place PC is. Presbyterian College has a great tradition of putting academics first for student-athletes, he said. When the job opened, I went after it knowing this was a good environment to live and work in. After meeting people here - the coaches, student-athletes, faculty, and the community - I knew this is where I wanted to be. There is so much potential here for us to have great success in Division I and doing it with honor. I m grateful and humbled to be selected. Reese follows Dr. William Bee Carlton, who served his alma mater as AD for six years. Reese and his wife, Tricia, have three children. He began his fulltime duties as director of athletics on July Presbyterian College Golf
