7 PUTTING 2012 IN THE BOOKS PREPARING FOR 2013 Jeff Beaudry, PGA Employment Consultant In many parts of the country 2012 was a good year for golf, seeing increases in rounds and revenues. The year looks especially good compared to the very challenging Sort of like shooting 72 the second day after beginning with 77. It may not have been great, but it was definitely an improvement. Regrettably, most PGA Professionals have come to realize expectations have changed dramatically over the past 5 years. It seems in the past that employers recognized and made allowances for the fluctuation between good weather and bad weather years believing that it balanced out eventually. Because of tight economic conditions, we may have seen the end of that mindset. Like every other business, demands on golf operations continue to increase. How can PGA Professionals manage and meet those expectations? Think - rewind and fast forward. The instinct to put the 2012 season in the books and move on is strong, but employers increasingly want to know not just what happened, but why it happened and what you had to do with it happening. Completing the circle, employers expect to know what was learned, what worked, what didn t and what your 2013 plan looks like. The process could be likened to a post-event debriefing where you review a major function at your facility immediately afterward. It generally begins by documenting for next year all of the plans that went into it. That might include time lines, budgets and promotion. The report should then look at the elements that contributed to a positive outcome. Logically, the next focus will be on what could be improved, what can be finetuned and what should be eliminated. Three things to keep in mind for your document as you recap 2012 for your employer: 1. It should be readable 2. To the point 3. Quantified The PGA of America offers the PGA Professional Report template and is available at pgalinks.com. But choose and customize the format that allows you to tell the story the way your employer will best receive it. Fast forward to 2013 and lay out your goals, action plans to achieve them and complete the circle by demonstrating how the results will, increase rounds or revenues, improve customer service or control costs. The same three objectives apply and the format should meet your and the employer s
8 requirements. In some instances this is a full-on formal business plan, in others a pared down version listing goals, action plans, desired results and benefits will suffice. You know your facility better than anyone else so a list of action plans comes best from you. If you haven t implemented these already, a partial list of action plans for 2013 might include: Exploit the Internet survey tools available to seek your member s opinions Capture customer contact information Become an expert in player development and outline your 2013 strategy Update promotional materials Additional emphasis on sales and customer service training Personally call each member What new skills you have gained or will gain Engage the PGA s CPP 2.0 and become certified Institute a weekly or monthly employer communication vehicle As Seven Habits of Highly Effective People author Stephen R. Covey in his chapter on Sharpening the Saw, says; Your economic security does not lie in your job; it lies in your own power to produce to think, to learn, to create, to adapt. That s true financial independence. It s not having wealth; it s having the power to produce wealth. If winter is the off or shoulder season for your facility it may provide the best opportunity for you to sharpen your saw as well as decompress a bit as you prepare for Jeff Beaudry is an Employment Consultant for the PGA of America and a PGA Certified Professional. He can be contacted at (801) or by at jbeaudry@pgahq.com The 2013 PGA CAREERLINKS PROFILE SURVEY The PGA of America developed the award winning CareerLinks system to help golf industry employers and qualified PGA professionals connect for employment opportunities. The CareerLinks Profile is the method used to quantify the skillsets, background, experience, etc., of our PGA professionals and allows the system to search and identify matching candidates for jobs in the golf industry. In 2009, PGA made the decision to do the Compensation Survey on a yearly basis and they stopped sending out The PGA CareerLinks Profile as a survey. It is a document that PGA professionals have always had the ability to update at any time so they didn t feel the need to keep making them start from scratch. However in the past 4 years the industry has experienced change and the Survey has been enhanced with new questions based on the priorities of today s golf industry and the needs of employers, including player development and higher level management positions. On October 30th PGA professionals were sent an with a link provided to complete their new PGA CareerLinks Profile. This must be filled out to remain active in CareerLinks
9 after the December 31st deadline. If you have questions please contact PGA Employment Consultant Jeff Beaudry at or call PGA of America at PGA FINANCIAL ASSISTANCE FUND SCHOLARSHIP PROGRAM
