Volume 1, Number 14, August 2017 Editor - David Lubke View this in your browser Dear Members and Friends, welcome to the Axedale Golf Club August Newsletter
President's Report I wish to congratulate all the winners of major events during July and August. The Annual Tournament was very successful, with many golfers from other clubs participating. A very big thanks to the tournament director, Lesley Elvey for her time and organisational skills to ensure a smooth week. Also thanks to many other volunteers who contributed their time. Ian Martin and his team in the bar and the caravan, Fred Kath and the Ladies for the excellent catering and the Greens Staff and the Tuesday volunteers for the excellent presentation of the course. The club has obtained a grant from Strafieldsaye Community and District Enterprise to erect shade sails outside the clubhouse, which will be erected prior to summer. Thanks to Owen Davies for organising the submission. The club is hosting the State Team Championships in October and we need many volunteers to undertake tasks to ensure a successful tournament and it is an opportunity to showcase our course. The AGM was held on Wednesday evening of 16 August with an excellent attendance. The members agreed that membership fee be increased by $10 to $490 per annum with all other membership categories remaining the same as the previous year. I wish incoming President, Andy Watson and his team well for the 2017/18 year. The committee has now been reduced from 17 to 8. To the members of the Executive, General Committee, chairpersons and members of the sub committees, I extend my personal thanks for their dedicated support throughout the year. As at 30 June 2017 the clubs membership has increased from 318 in 2016 to 337 in 2017, it is encouraging that membership is growing. Yours in golf Rod Connelly
The new Committee elected to run the club for the year Back row L to R - Owen Davies (Secretary) Peter Andrew (Treasurer) Rod Jacobs (Captain) Peter Hoskin (Greens Chairman) Front - Loretta Prowse (Ladies Captain) Andrew Watson (President) Allan Andrews (Vice President) Raye Fleay (Ladies President) Congratulations and good luck. Welcome to Our New Members FULL MEMBERS Aidan Moore Returning to the club Michael Chilcott Ernie Fleming Brandt Fleming Peter Pannell transferring from Marong Golf Club
Colin Bush Lyn Bush SIX MONTHS : Oct March Ashley Smith (old AGC member) WELCOME BACK Phil Byrne returning from 6 months off after back surgery (will commence golf again next thur) Captain's Report August's Monthly Medal winner Warren Pollock. Congratulations to you Warren a follow up from winning the Peter Nielsen memorial last month. Mixed Canadian Foursomes Championship held on 15 th July with Ruth Iser & Fred Kath taking out the much sought after championship award from Raye & Daryl Fleay with Sue & Rob Minne in third. Congratulations to Ruth & Fred, who are great supporters of the club and do a power of volunteer work. Well deserved. Natural Hazards The fourth day of Natural Hazards (mixed event) was held on the 23 rd July. We had 26 players enjoying the day playing a round of Canadian golf. The winners with a tidy 89/21/68 were Jennifer Goddard and my good self. Thankfully Jen played some great shots and carried me over the line. Again it was great to see visitors from other clubs enjoyed both the course and our great hospitality. Annual Tournament Firstly a huge THANK YOU to Tournament Secretary Lesley Elvey on the magnificent job she did. Lesley had to battle two bugs, one the good old Flu, and two, a computer virus, during the running of the tournament. The amount of spreadsheets she has to actually simplify the whole process is unreal and worth having a look at, just to understand what is involved. A big thanks also goes out to the large number of volunteers (in the Kitchen, Captains Office, Bar, Caravan, Course Maintenance and anywhere else that I
may have missed). How well did our club present to our members and guests! We had 60 Ladies play on the Wednesday, 108 Men on the Friday, 66 Ladies & Men on Saturday and 80 players (over the morning & arvo comps) on the Sunday. We had a great field of Div 1. players play the 36 holes event, included Pros Kris Mueck & Lucas Herbert and they were great to follow around and see how they attacked our course. For all the results check the notice board or website. It would be remiss of me not to thank you, the members for your support in entering in these events, selling allocated raffle tickets, providing cakes, slices, sausage rolls, etc and in making the clubhouse atmosphere great. Thank you. One incident from the Annual Tournament that needs to be highlighted, is David Ivey achieving a Hole-in-one on the 14 th during Fridays Mens 4BBB comp of the tournament. David pretty much slam dunked it into the hole, with the ball wedged between the flag and the cup until a bit of a breeze moved the flagstick and the ball fell in. David went home with 8 balls from the Eagles Nest (thanks Cool Frog Pete) and $100 donated by Carley Advisory Service (thanks Mike). Competition entries With an increasing number of members using motorised carts, the club has a maximum of two carts per foursome policy. So, if you are in a cart by yourself, can you please seek out a possible buddy to join you in your cart, prior to entering for the comp. With the great numbers of entries for any given Saturday, the volunteers in the Captain s Office have a hard time co-ordinating the setting up of groups and eventually send out. By having you and a mate in a cart this will certainly streamline things and help the Captain s Office get people away to tees on time. Captain s Office Volunteers As the old saying goes many hands make light work, if you can help out in the Captain s Office on comp days, please let me know. At the moment we have about 17 members volunteering their time. This means they may be called upon (no surprises though there is a roster) on average about once a month or so, to help out. Obviously, if we get a few more members willing to have a go, this will push out to about bimonthly. If we do get a few interested in learning the position/s, I am sure we could arrange an instruction night or two. The Office roles are; Entry that involves setting up the comp on the computer and entering players as they come in to register. Send Out Taking the comp fees from members, getting the player s cards off the printer and organizing the cards into groups to then be sent out at 12noon. Send Out Assistant When closer to send out time, take late entries (and comp fees), allowing Send Out person to concentrate on arranging groups for send off.
Results taking the results of players having entered their rounds in the computer system and inputting the results onto a templated form for the Captain to then read out at Presentations. Assist with collating the various prize winners (i.e. N.T.P. Ball Winners & Vouchers) and finalising the competition results with Golflink and the Bendigo Addy Give me a ring ( ) anytime, if you have any enquiries about the roles or are keen to help out. Finally, I would just like to thank outgoing Club President Rod Connolly, and outgoing Secretary Stephen Lee for all their efforts over their tenure in the positions. You have served you club well. Congratulations to incoming Prez, Andy Watson and Secretary Owen Davies, Vice Prez Allan Andrews on your appointments and look forward to working with you and all committee members over the next twelve months. Thanks Rod Jacobs Men's Knockout winner Peter Hoskin being presented with the David Lubke shield by Captain Rod & David

I wish to thank them for sharing their time, talent, energy and enthusiasm in a multitude of ways to help make the annual event a success for our Club. We have celebrated birthday milestones and held a Pink Day, where we raised funds
for Cancer research and I thank everyone for participating and generously supporting this event through fines and by sponsoring prizes. Our Christmas in July was combined with Friends Day where we shared Christmas spirit and remembered our friends who are no longer playing golf or who have passed away. With the course in excellent condition we look forward to hosting the Silver and Bronze Division District Championships conducted by Golf Central Victoria on Friday, 25 th August. On behalf of the Ladies Sub committee I wish to thank the outgoing office bearers for their dedicated contribution to the ongoing success of our great Club. Raye Fleay Silver Salver at Belvoir Park Our ladies team who won the 2017 Silver Salver at Belvoir Park on Monday, 31 st July. It is the first time our ladies have won this event. Team consisted on Di Wenzlau, Jan Walklate and Deb Bish. Congratulations Ladies

Copy of message sent to Kris Mueck & Lucas Herbert by Secretary Owen To Kris we said: Big shout out from Axedale Golf Club, mate. We very much appreciated your support in playing our 36-hole tournament yesterday. And what a great second round - 63 on our shortish but demanding course. It would be oh so easy for a top sportsman to forget where he comes from and your support for one of your formative clubs marks you as a true professional. All the best from Axedale for the future. He replied: Thanks Owen, I love getting back when I can and will always love the joint! Without it I wouldn't be where I am today! Thoroughly enjoyed yesterday and the course was fantastic and will continue to be in the future I'm sure! Thanks mate Our Lucas message: Hi Lucas. A huge thank you from Axedale Golf Club for supporting our tournament by playing yesterday's 36-hole event. With a flight to Fiji just hours away, you showed fantastic commitment to grass roots golf by showcasing your skills on a local Bendigo course. We very much appreciated your participation and wish you every success in future. He replied: No worries Owen, it was some good preparation for this week.. Below - Some of the Tournament winners
