1 Neangar Park Golf Club Newsletter Neangar Park Golf June 2016 President s Prattle As the financial year draws to a close it is worth looking back at what our club has achieved and what has changed over the past 12 months. On the golfing front we have hosted another successful PGA Pro-Am, a Trainee Pro-Am, won an award for our previous years Trainee Pro-Am, taken out both the Women s and Men s Division 1 Pennant competitions, seen one of our young guns Lucas Herbert turn pro, extended our junior program to run all year round and commenced a new initiative with the Golf Premier League now underway! On the course we have seen the long awaited completion of the new machinery shed, the completion of a Tree Management Plan, the reconstruction of the bunkers on the 1st and we will soon roll out our new tee sponsors signs. This year we have also tried to improve the way we keep in touch with our members through the preparation of a regular newsletter. Feedback has been good, but we want to make sure everyone gets to read it, so if you are not receiving the newsletter via and would like to, please update your details with Brendan. Hard copies will also be available in the clubhouse for those of you that would prefer to read a printed copy. We have also partnered with Golf Central Victoria in developing a mobile phone app, and while we don t have much information on there at the moment, it would be great if you could download the app (search for Golf Central Victoria in the app store) as I m sure many golfers will start using it to find out what is going on across the district in the future. Finally, on behalf of your Committee of Management, I would like to thank you for being a member of Neangar Park over the past year and I hope you have enjoyed seeing and benefited from the improvements that have been made over the past 12 months and look forward to the next year as we continue to build our club to become one of the best in Central Victoria. Phil DeAraugo and his side played some impressive golf throughout the competition and thoroughly deserved the flag. Commiserations to the Division 2B team who were runners up. The title actually came down to a playoff in the end, but unfortunately things didn t go our way. fred Neangar Plate Congratulations to the winners of our latest gold letter event, the Neangar Plate. The event was played as a 3 person ambrose of any combination, with some excellent scores achieved. Top 3 place getters were decided by less than 1 shot! Results: 1st- David Bish, Damian Tresize and Shane Myers 64/55 2nd place- John Dullard, Ian Klason, Rick Goodwin 63/55.3 3rd Place- Rod Kane, Shane Muir, Steve Tonkin 58/55.7 Slow Play Just a reminder to be aware of slow play on the course. The vast majority of people are doing the right thing is this regard, but there have been some complaints of late. There are some simple things that golfers can do to ensure an acceptable pace of play so it is important that this is adhered to. Making sure that we don t fall into bad habits and a gentle reminder to our playing partners is all that s required when we start getting a bit behind. 2 Ladies Chatter This month has seen a couple of lovely rainy days, and the course is beautiful. On Friday 13th May we conducted the 22nd Annual Yvonne Boyd Bowl. The weather was magnificent. The Bowl is a Stableford event which was contested by 20 teams from far and wide. The Bowl was won by Axedale 2 (Maureen Grogan, Lesley Elvey & Sue Minne). Also running concurrently with the Bowl is an individual Stableford event, with a total of 73 players. A Grade Winner Sue Flint, Runner Up Jazy Roberts. B Grade Winner Noela Henning, Runner Up Gloria Conolan. C Grade Winner Maureen Grogan (Axedale), Runner Up Banksie Buckley (Kyneton) on count back from Michelle Bailey (Bendigo) and Cheryl Nolen. Thank you to Pat Macumber, Shirley Hammond, Sue Sutton and all our Lady Members that contributed towards a really lovely day. Pennant has now concluded with the district conducting Presentation Day at Neangar Park on Monday 23rd May. Fantastic effort and congratulations to the Neangar Park 1 team (Janelle Brown, Jenni Bilkey, Jan Conder, Bernice Campbell and Helen Leech) for winning GCV Division 1 Pennant. Division 2 was won by Belvoir Park, Division 3 was won by Castlemaine and Sandscrapes was won by Elmore. Also, thank you to all our players in Neangar Park 2 and 3 teams. The next major event on our calendar is in June after the long weekend, the Lady. Good golfing Course Report Well what a difference a month makes, the weather has certainly turned cold. At last we have received some rain, 83mm for May with the average for Bendigo being 45. We have started filling up the dams again pumping from Lake Tom Thumb and also gravity feeding as well with our new pipe we installed last year. The greens are now starting to run very nicely after our renovations; however we still have a few rough spots and holes to fill up. Could I please ask people to fix at least 2 pitch marks on the greens, this would help dramatically! During the winter months we will continue to make improvements to the irrigation system, with the 17th tee getting an upgrade and surrounds sprinklers on the 14th green installed. Numerous other small improvements will also be performed over winter. New tee signs and posts will begin to be installed around the course and they will be the same style as the RSD Accountants sign near the practice nets. Bunkers sand has been changed in some bunkers on holes 12, 13 and 14 and this will continue to other bunkers as required. The next bunker will be the 8th bunker; the sand from the bunkers is then used for various projects around the course. 3 Jarrod Lyle Fundraiser The club hosted a Sportsmans Night during May, with the guest speaker being US PGA Tour player Jarrod Lyle. The night was a fantastic success, with the crowd enjoying stories from Jarrod. Thanks to Geoff Briggs for his work as MC, and thanks to all members and guests who came along and raised some much needed funds for the Challenge Foundation. General Managers Notes It s that time of year again, Membership renewal is due on the first of July and a box with membership renewals will be left in the pro shop for our regular golfers and the remaining mailed out. Please make the effort to pick yours up as it reduces the cost of postage dramatically. Wayne DeAraugo is running a VRI golf day at Neangar Park on Sunday the 12th June, 11a.m. assembly for an 11:30 shotgun start. 18 Holes stroke. Please contact Wayne on or ; you can also contact the pro shop as well Premier League Golf is into full swing and is proving popular. 3 rounds have been completed and the ladder is below. Pro s Tip of the Month A firm footing is important! As winter rolls in, the conditions change with the wet winter grass now becoming a factor. Re-spiking your shoes should be addressed as our lower half needs to stay fixed and stable to the ground so it will allow our top half to do its job. If our lower half can t stay stuck to the ground, then the chances of our golf swing returning to the correct position is little to none. For any advice please see my friendly team in the Pro-shop. 4 Junior Banter Well the 2016 winter season of the Neangar Park Juniors is under way with four of the first five rounds done, with the Mother s Day match ending up being rained out. We have seen a few different faces popping up in the winner s circle. Sponsors Spot Sponsor of the Month: All Seasons The last two rounds have seen a little family rivalry between the likes of Dylan and Evan Weston battling out in the nine hole short comp in round four with Dylan holding off his younger brother with a score of 54/27/27 to Evans 45/16/29 and then turning the tables in round five with Evan running second with a 51/16/35 on a count back to Dylan's 60/25/35. Another family rivalry this time between brother and sister duo of Shanae and Tyson Aisbett with round five results having seen both take out wins, Shanae in the nine hole short with a score of 62/30/32 beating both Weston boys, and Tyson in the five hole short scoring a win with 41/25/16 on a count back from recent newcomer Declan Tod Hunter score of 44/28/16, ahead of Ryder Marriott with a 41/19/22. We also saw Evan and Tyson for the last two weeks running both grabbing the nearest to pin wins. A large group of our juniors also took part in a morning golfing clinic on the 28th with a visit from Shepparton golfing sensation and Australian international Champ and PGA, US Open competitor Jarrod Lyle who visited the golf club for a round of golf with many local faces and sportsman's night. Jarrod generously gave up his time to show the kids the finer points of golf and giving them a few tips along the way at the practice fairway, the kids were all very happy and grateful to receive the help from the golfing celebrity The All Seasons is one of Bendigo s premier venues for casual drinks, family dinners, gala events and weddings. There is something for everyone, and if you re over that side of town drop in and treat yourself to a meal and a few drinks with friends. Other Items Slow Play: As the winter golf season sets in, things tend to slow down around the course sometimes. Just a reminder to all players to vigilant of their pace of play etiquette. Generally the club has few issues with very slow play in comparison to many other clubs, but we should always be looking to improve. Small things such as being ready to play your shot, clearing the green as soon as possible and moving quickly between shots can making a surprising difference to the flow of play. The last thing players want is to be standing around waiting too long in the cold winter chill. Update: The club is trying to improve its communication to members, and one of the best assets we have available is . We currently have addresses on file for around half the membership base only. This is entered in for all new members, but for longer term members of the club, we may have not have your details on file. Please pop in and see Nic in the office to confirm if your details are complete. Tree on 18th: The members will notice that the large Ironbark tree on the left hand side of the 18 th fairway has just been removed (the large one with a big fork in it). The club had a professional audit completed on all of the trees at the course, and a number were flagged as high risk of falling, and needed to be removed. This one was the main offender, but there will be a few more lopped down over the next few months. The club will be looking at options to make adjustments to the hole layout (new hazards or trees) to ensure the hole doesn t play too easy with the big tree gone.
