4 Executive Director s Report By Jeff Ellison, PGA March is Spring Meeting time Section and Chapter. I encourage you to attend your Chapter Meeting and also the Spring Section Meeting on Monday, March 19 at Columbia Edgewater CC. The Section Meeting starts at 7:00 PM following the first round of the Pro- Assistant Championship. After the normal business meeting, the Board will lead three Golf 2.0 Focus Groups and discuss solutions at public, private and resort operations. President Prugh and I will make four of the Chapter Meetings this spring. We apologize for missing the Oregon Chapter Meeting but we will be doing double duty at the Holcomb-in-One Las Vegas Pro-Am and the District 14 Meeting that day. Section Secretary Bryan Tunstill will attend and provide an update on Section activities. I hope you are playing in the Pro-Assistant Championship at Columbia Edgewater on March Sponsored by Bushnell and Cutter & Buck, we are looking at a $22,000 purse with decent field! Have a big staff? Last issue I mentioned the Member Service Requirement changes enacted by the PGA Board of Directors in Orlando. With the changes, we will again have four years to complete our requirements. The details of the new program can be found at pgalinks.com. In a nutshell members will need to achieve a total of 54 MSR but the required categories have been modified to 36 credits in any combination of PGA Meetings, PGA Education or approved Golf 2.0 activities. The easiest way to understand the change is that your MSR credits on June 15, 2012 will be your starting balance for a three year MSR cycle running from June 16, 2012 to June 15, Look for more details from National and please review it! The Washington Open Invitational is quickly approaching. Start working on your championship partner and please put the pro-am sponsorship information in front of potential sponsors. While there were a few major changes, there were also a significant number of wording and structural changes that in specific cases may result in a different answer from the good book. Please order new Rule Books and new Decisions Books from the USGA immediately. You will give incorrect rulings in 2012 from last year s book. Molly and I are both attending a workshop again this year it s that important. The PGA Compensation Survey is out and if you complete it by March 15 you will earn 2 MSR for your efforts. It takes just a short time to complete and the information is extremely valuable when it comes time to enhance your current position or when Jeff Beaudry is working to upgrade an open position. 6 Tournament News Tournament News Pro-Assistant Championship March at Columbia Edgewater CC The Champions Washington Open Invitational The Korey Pro-Am: May at Glendale CC Championship: May at Glendale CC The Champions 6,699 Yards, Par 71 Max. Field: 60 teams of two Professionals from the same facility. The Field & Sponsors Bushnell and Cutter & Buck are returning with representatives Sally Schmitz and Bryan Dickson as sponsors of the Pro-Assistant Championship once again. Expected to return to try and capture their third win is Head PGA Professional Steve Prugh and Assistant Professional Corey Prugh of Manito G&CC. In 2008, the Prugh s made history by being the first father-son duo to capture the title which they accomplished again in Other past team champions expected to enter is two time champions Head PGA Professional Mike Gove with Assistant Eric Berry of Inglewood GC, Head PGA Professional Marti O Neill with Assistant Josh Immordino of Riverbend GC and Head PGA Professional Bryan Tunstill with Assistant Adrian Burtner of Columbia Edgewater CC. Columbia Edgewater CC The historic Columbia Edgewater was founded in 1925 and designed by Vernon Macan, who the 18 hole course is also named after. In October of 1929, the Oregon Open Invitational was won by Horton Smith who defeated Walter Hagen. Smith would later go on to win the Master s the next spring. In 1955, two members, Bruce Cudd and Dick Yost made the prestigious Walker Cup team. Prior to Cudd and Yost, only once before had two members of the same club made the Walker Cup the same year. This was accomplished by Bobby Jones and Watts Gun from the Atlanta Athletic Club. The 1961 Portland Open, hosted by Columbia Edgewater CC, was won by Billy Casper who beat out Dave Hill, and the following year Jack Nicklaus won. CECC has hosted many Section events in addition to those events listed above. History of the Championship It all started in 1992 when the Pacific Northwest Pro-Assistant Championship got off to an exciting start. It took the Progress Downs team of Jerry Minor and Ralph West SEVEN holes of sudden-death to finally shake the Royal Oaks duo of Steve Bowen and Michael Wilkerson. After shooting 14-under at Tacoma C&GC, neither of the two teams could get a birdie putt to drop in the playoff. The 1995 Redwood GC team of Scott Williams and Mike Barnett still hold the tournament record after scorching the rest of the field with an 18-under 126 at McCormick Woods GC and winning by three strokes. This championship has fostered camaraderie between the Head Professional and his Assistant and is one of the most popular events of the Pacific Northwest Section PGA Ryan Malby & Jess Roper 10 - Steve Prugh & Corey Prugh 09 - Marti O Neil & Josh Immordino 08 - Steve Prugh & Corey Prugh 07 - Stu Aden & Kris Swanson 6,525 Yards, Par 71 Field size: 96 teams of one professional and one amateur. The Field & Sponsors Returning to try and defend his title for the individual championship is PGA Professional Tim Feenstra of Broadmoor GC. Feenstra also won this event in 2007 and holds the current tournament record which he accomplished last year. Other past champions expected to enter are: Jeff Coston of Semiahmoo G&CC (2010, 2001, 1999, and 1996), Brian Thornton of Meridian Valley CC (2009), Brian Nosler of Vanco Driving Range (2008), Josh Immordino of Riverbend GC (2006), and Keith Coleman of Harbour Pointe GC (2004, 1997), Todd Erwin of Tacoma Firs GC (2003, 2000, 1993 and 1992), Bill Porter of The Links at Moses Pointe (2002), Don Bies of Seattle, WA (1987, 1980, 1959), Mike Gove of Inglewood GC (1985), Steve Stull of Canyon Lakes GC (1982), Chuck Milne of Vanco Driving Range (1976, 1973), and Fred Haney of The Reserve Vineyards GC (1975). Glendale CC Glendale CC opened its doors in 1956 and was designed by local architect Al Smith. There have been several design improvements over the years and the newer designs come from renowned golf course architect John Harbottle III. Glendale CC is the site of twelve previous Washington Open Invitational. History of the Championship The Washington Open Invitational was established in September 1922 at Yakima Country Club. The Championship has accumulated an impressive list of repeat champions over the years. History was made back in 1978 at Glendale Country Club when Fred Couples became the youngest champion of the event. That historic year Couples beat Fred Haney, our 1975 Champion by one stroke. Charles Congdon won five titles over four decades. Al Mengert has won four times, including three in a row from Longremembered stand outs Bud Ward and Bob Duden have also had their fair share of the spotlight to name a few. Chuck Milne set the tournament record of 202 at Meridian Valley CC in 1976 and held it until Tim Feenstra broke it just last year with 200 at Glendale CC Tim Feenstra 10 - Jeff Coston 09 - Brian Thornton 08 - Brian Nosler 07 - Tim Feenstra 8 9

The Field We have many strong professionals that will be trying to capture the title of Senior Player s Champion. A few PGA Professionals to keep an eye on are past champions: Jeff Coston of Semiahmoo G&CC (2006,), Chuck Milne of Vanco Driving Range (2005, 2001 and 1998), Tom Carey of Meriwether National GC (2004), Don Bies of Seattle, WA (2003, 2002), Doug Campbell of Auburn, WA (2000), Fred Haney of The Reserve Vineyards (1999), Jim Wilkinson of Bend, OR (1997, 1995) and Jerry Mowlds of Pumpkin Ridge (1996). Indian Summer G&CC Consistently ranked among the bestconditioned courses in the state, Indian Summer Golf & Country Club has hosted the 1995 Washington Open Invitational, the 1996 Washington State Amateur, and the 1996 and 1997 Nike Tour events. Nike players voted it Best of Nike Tour and Golf Digest consistently names it one of the Top Ten Courses in Washington. The course opened in April of 1992 and continues to be one of the Northwest s premier private clubs. Much of the credit for the highly rated course belongs to internationally acclaimed architect, Peter L.H. Thompson. His ability to create a sense of place and to subtly remind golfers that they are part of a special environment is apparent throughout Indian Summer G&CC. History of the Championship After last year s event, we decided to return to the original format of this championship based on your feedback. All competitions are based on gross scores. There will be an individual professional, individual amateur and four-ball competition. Individuals will be paid in three divisions Open, 58-64, 65+. Actual purse in divisions is based on distribution of entries. The Champions 06 - Jeff Coston 05 & 01 Chuck Milne 04 - Tom Carey Why You Should Begin Investing Now By Blake Parrish, Financial Advisor Merrill Lynch - Global Wealth Management I remember working in the bag room at Eugene Country Club during the 1980 s, wondering how most of the members were able to afford a membership. Better yet, how was the head golf professional able to retire in just a few years? I wanted to follow a similar path. Did I need to strive to get a prestigious Head Professional title at a Private Club, limit my golf instruction to wealthy pupils only, follow the sun during the winter months to maximize my paychecks, take on big risks in the stock market? The answer I came up with may surprise you. As Albert Einstein is often quoted as saying, The most powerful force in the universe is compound interest. The following example should help to explain what I mean. The power of tax-deferred compounding Consider this example: Sandy Saver starts saving at age 25, contributing $4,000 a year for 10 years into an IRA. Divot McLate starts saving at age 35, contributing $4,000 a year for 30 years into an IRA. Thanks to the power of long-term, tax-deferred compounding, Sandy s balance is more than $140,000 higher than Divot s even though she contributed far less for a shorter period of time. (Results based on both earning an 8% rate of return and retiring at age 65) Starting age Contributing time 10 years 30 years Total contribution $40k $120k Balance at age 65 $583,091 $453,133 For illustrative purposes only. Taxes will be due upon withdrawal. Key considerations as a golf professional no matter what phase in life you may find yourself, and no matter what the news of the world is saying: Start saving early to take advantage of the power of compounding. Just get started, even if 1%, $10 bucks a month, $5 bucks a lesson. Retirement plans may offer immediate tax advantages. 401(k) plans often come with an employer match- take advantage of this as it is just like giving yourself a raise! For even greater retirement savings, consider opening an IRA/Roth IRA in addition to an employer plan. With each paycheck comes your responsibility to assign each dollar toward something (bills, mortgage/rent, savings, retirement account, entertainment, food, etc.) but every dollar gets assigned. Just like in golf, always be aware of the things we can control like how much we make, how much is spent, and how much is saved. Why should you invest in an IRA? If your employer does not offer a 401(k) plan, you should consider saving for retirement on your own with an IRA. If you employer does offer a 401(k) you may want to maximize your contribution there ($17,000 in 2012, $22,500 if over 50 years of age), and then save even more toward retirement by contributing to an IRA (up to $5,000 per year, $6,000 if over 50). At the end of the day, PAY YOURSELF FIRST! Your financial security is in your hands today; you can t rely on employer or the government for your personal long-term financial security. 10 Employment Services Pros on the Move Jeff Beaudry, Employment Services Consultant As part of the PGA of America s commitment to employment, regional Career Service Consultants have been hired to serve the needs of PGA Members and clubs. The Northwest Regional Employment Services Consultant who services the Pacific Northwest is Jeff Beaudry. Jeff is a multi-year veteran of the Employment Services Department. He was the Executive Director of the Utah Section PGA for 14 years and is a tremendous asset to the members and apprentices in the Pacific Northwest. He works closely with the Section to improve employment situations, assist professionals in finding new positions or negotiating their current position, and act as an adviser on career related topics. He is instrumental in the administration of CareerLinks, and will help train our Career Services Committee in all aspects of their duties.
