1 USTA PACIFIC NORTHWEST E-NEWSLETTER E MAY Y 2013 By Matthew Warren Executive Director It s an exciting time for the USTA/PNW and we are working hard to expand and enhance your playing opportunities. We are currently in the process of evaluating and improving the USTA League experience for our adult players in the upcoming 2014 season. But it will be hard to improve on the performance of our USTA/PNW league teams at the recent national championships as we had several teams finish in the top four and two come home with national titles. We are also gaining momentum for our new recreational programs as Tennis Afterschool Zone (TAZ) kicked off last month and introduced the sport to kids in schools in Washington, Oregon and Idaho. Both kids and adults can find many ways to play this sunny spring, whether it s in tournaments, USTA Jr. Team Tennis or adult team tennis in our Mixed, 40 & Over or One Doubles leagues. We encourage you to take advantage of these opportunities! Part of this review has included Town Hall meetings throughout the Pacific Northwest, one-on-one meetings with many facilities, many and phone conversations, discussions with Local League Coordinators and meetings with the USTA/ PNW Adult Competition Committee. All of this information will be utilized in proposing changes which are intended to improve your USTA League experience. In 2013, release of this information will be delayed until after the next USTA/PNW Board meeting which is scheduled on May 18. We appreciate your patience as we conduct this review of our USTA League program. USTA/PNW Teams Win Super Senior and Senior Mixed National Titles The 6.0, 7.0, 8.0 and 9.0 teams from the Pacific Northwest competed in the 2012 USTA Super Senior National Championships in Surprise, Ariz., on various weekends last month. The 8.0 Men s team from The Irvington Club in Portland fought off a tough Missouri Valley team to win the national championship! Below is a brief recap of the other Super Senior divisions: 6.0 Women: Yakima Tennis Club defeated Texas to secure 3 rd place in the nation. 6.0 Men: As a Wildcard, Eugene (Ore.) YMCA took 3 rd place and Sprinker T.C. in Tacoma, Wash., finished in 4 th place. 8.0 Women: Vancouver Tennis Center (VTC) had a tough draw in round robin play with the eventual national champion Southern California in their flight. VTC was able to get one win in pool play. 9.0 Women: A USTA/PNW Independent team captained by Mary Kurz lost in the semifinals but defeated Texas to finish in 3 rd place. Senior Mixed National Invitational Since the inception of the USTA Senior Mixed National Invitational a few years ago, the Pacific Northwest Section has had a very strong showing at the event and this year was no different. The 7.0 Senior Mixed team from Sammamish Club (Issaquah, Wash.) brought home a championship by defeating Northern California 2-1 in the final! Here are results for the other USTA/PNW teams: 6.0 Sr. Mixed: Bellevue (Wash.) Club took 2 nd place nationally, narrowly falling to Southern 2-1 in the championship match. 8.0 Sr. Mixed: Sage Springs Club in Sunriver, Ore., defeated Florida 2-1 in the 3 rd place match after losing 2-1 in the semifinals to eventual champion Southwest. 9.0 Sr. Mixed: West Hills R.C. in Portland finished 2 nd in their round robin flight.

4 Tennis Afterschool Zone is a Smash in School Gyms This Spring The USTA/PNW Tennis Afterschool Zone (TAZ) is now a reality for ten schools in six school districts in three Pacific Northwest states. An estimated 150 kids will gain the benefits of playing tennis in a fun environment this May and June. Thank you as well to the 40 tennis enthusiasts who have applied to be instructors and are helping us to introduce tennis to kids in their communities. If you have contacts at your local schools and want to start the program in your community this fall, let us know. Our list of schools wanting to run TAZ is growing daily. We re also still recruiting for more of the very best TAZ instructors who are vital in our partnering with school districts. Outstanding individuals who enjoy working with kids are encouraged to apply at or taz@pnw.usta.com with any questions. Get in on the Fun: Play USTA Jr. Team Tennis This Summer The USTA Pacific Northwest invites all junior tennis players to play USTA Jr. Team Tennis. Summer teams are forming now. Jr. Team Tennis emphasizes teamwork, skill development and friendly competition in a fun and social environment. The program brings kids together in teams of similar age groups and skill levels. Each team is led by a parent manager or team coach who registers to form a team by contacting the USTA Jr. Team Tennis coordinator in their area listed below. Please contact the local coordinator in your area listed below or USTA/PNW Jr. Team Tennis Coordinator Mark Toppe at markt@pnw.usta.com for more information.
