1 2018 PLAYER WEBINAR NOTES (Adult 40 & Over Section Championships) Welcome by TD Congratulations and welcome to the Adult 40 & Over Section Championships. USTA League in the Pacific Northwest has over 36,000 participants. You are a very elite tennis population and should be proud of the accomplishment of getting to sectionals!! USTA PNW Adult Competition Committee CAPTAINS! Captain Bag and Folder Each captain will still receive a bag with their team s T-shirts and any extra local league awards (if applicable) to be picked up at the site of their first match on Friday. You can come anytime on Friday at the site of your first match to pick it up. There will also be a folder, which will have: o Match schedule o Slip with all the T-shirt orders name and sizes o Tournament Info Sheet o Outdoor court map o Columbia Employee Store passes 10 in each folder. Each pass allows 4 people to enter Match Site Important Info All Sites: bananas, ice, water, restrooms & at least one official (these may not be available at alternative sites if matches are moved there due to weather issues, but our main 5 sites will have these) Club Green Meadows (7 indoor courts) o Club opens at 5:30am, but courts are not available to USTA for warm-up/set-up until 7:00am o Players are welcome to use club facilities, but must bring own towel for shower or court use o No outside food or alcohol allowed, but you can purchase some on-site o Café is open at 7:30am; Lounge opens at 12:00pm (noon) - they will have a special Tournament Player Menu o For any stringing needs, contact Nancy at Mountain Park Racquet & Fitness Club (using 5 indoor & 5 outdoor courts, then 6 indoor and outdoor after 11:30am) o Club opens at 6:00am, but courts not available to USTA for warm-up/set-up until 7:00am o Blended pickleball lined outdoor court will be used for match play o Players are welcome to use club facilities, but must bring own towel for shower or court use o Please park in the club s parking lot in a designated parking space. If all spaces are taken, use side streets with designated street parking. Cars parked illegally are subject to towing at the car owner s responsibility.

2 o For stringing needs, contact Mike Yee at (503) You can drop off and pick up your racquet at Mt. Park Sunset Athletic Club (6 indoor courts) o Facility is open 5:30am on Friday and 7:00am on Saturday, but tennis area is not open until 7am either day. o If you re the first match of the day, use the entrance farthest from the street! o Sign in at front desk o 4 courts are in the main tennis area (area closest to the street), while the other 2 are across the building. o Players can use showers and locker-rooms (sauna and hot tub included), but no other club access is allowed o Food or snacks for purchase as well o USTA will provide ice on-site they also have non-potable ice for injuries o Be respectful of facility rules Tualatin Hills Tennis Center (6 indoor & 8 outdoor courts) o Staff will arrive 1 hour prior to scheduled match time - courts not available for warm-up until a half hour before match start time. o This is a large facility with multiple sports. If the parking is full, there is an Overflow Area (gravel road/ grass parking off of Walker Road). Plan ahead for the walk. See image: o Players can use showers, but must bring own towels o Outdoor and indoor restrooms will be available o USTA will provide ice on-site o No smoking, vaping, or alcohol is allowed on any THPRD facility or surrounding grounds o Be respectful of facility rules West Hills Racquet & Fitness Club (using 5 outdoor courts) o Club opens at 6:00am, but courts not available to USTA for warm-up/set-up until 7:00am o There are pickleball courts next to match court o Pool and gym is off limits, but players may ride bike for warm-up if needed o Food or snacks for purchase on-site as well Page 5 of 5

3 Warm Up Courts Use map on website for suggestions of public courts nearby. Only suggestions and can t guarantee open. No warm-up courts at tournament sites! (only first match of morning for about 15 minutes) Weather Update.Currently under an air quality issue. Good news Portland air quality should clear up by Thursday. Weather will be mid- 70 s. Potential rain Saturday night, Sunday morning. But as of now, looking pretty good. If need back-up indoor courts, will make that decision as needed Sectional Changes No more athletic trainers, but brought back USTA Officials at each site plus a Head Referee Match Format Format: best of three tiebreak sets with a match tiebreak (first to 10 points, win by 2) in lieu of a third set, play out the ads Tiebreak Procedure: Coman Tie Break procedure for all tiebreakers (set or match, inside or outside) Pre match instructions 1) Line-Up Cards. Captain must now get these from the tournament desk. 2) Double check line-up card before turning it in. 3) All players should be on site ready to play before turning in line-up. 4) Once line-up is turned in, there are no changes. 5) Be sure to write legibly and do not use nicknames or shortened versions of names please be consistent with the roster names when completing the scorecard/lineup. 6) Report to tournament desk 30 minutes before scheduled time of match and submit scorecard/line-up. 7) The 30 minutes is highly recommended to keep matches moving so we don t get behind. The default clock does not start until the actual match time or when a court is available, which ever is later. 8) Matches will be called on a followed by basis captains and their teams must keep in touch with the tournament desk in case their matches can be called earlier than the scheduled time. 9) Court scorecards/scorekeepers must be used and you will be told by the tournament desk staff which side of the scorecards to use as each team s match is called. 10) 10 minute warm-up Post Match Instructions: 1) Winner must report scores and return balls and opponents please confirm scores. 2) Both team captains must sign scorecard after all team matches have been completed. Standings/Scores 1) These will not be posted on site. You can access the up-to-date standings and scores on tennislink.usta.com using your mobile device, tablet, or computer. 2) Instructions will be available at each tournament desk if needed. 3) If you look online and see an error in the scorecard, text or call TD (Adam) to let him know. Finals 1) We will get matches in as soon as we can so you know who wins each flight. 2) Flight winners will play each other in the Finals (if there are two flights in your division) 3) Once both flight winners are determined in each division, the primary and secondary contacts from each team will be texted confirmation of the Finals match. 4) The Section Champion will receive awards, a Championship banner, and of course an automatic birth into the Adult 40 & Over National Championships to be played this fall. 5) Players must have 3 matches, 1 can be a default, to qualify for National Championship Regulations NTRP Dynamic DQ s will be run throughout the weekend o If a player is Dynamically DQ d (receives 3 strikes), Adam or Alyssa will contact the captain or Primary Contact ASAP.

Anything to identify you re there for the section championships Shopping Deals o Nike Employee Store: USTA League Members are invited to shop at the Nike Employee Store from August 9-27, Membership must be current as-of August 6. Invitation is valid for one-time entry only during the time period. Valid photo ID is required. Each USTA Member may bring their spouse/permanent partner or dependent children under the age of 24. The spouse/permanent partner must also provide valid photo ID. Dependent children must be 22 or younger with the same address, 24 or younger with valid college ID. Any child 15 or older must have some form of ID (i.e. Student Body Card, Driver's Permit, License, etc.). Please refrain from wearing any competitor brands in the store. 40% off most merchandise, and be advised some merchandise may be available to employees only. Our USTA staff will pick our favorite photo from the event and give away a prize to the winner. Sportsmanship 1) We want to hear great stories of sportsmanship this weekend. TD has some pins she will give out to players who show great sportsmanship. We are only allotted a certain number of pins per event, but we still want to capture and recognize all stories to share later. 2) Each tournament desk has a sheet you can fill out to nominate a player. We like to track them on the sheet so we can maybe post it on social media or in our E-Newsletter down the road. Sectional Balls Using Pro-Penn Marathon Regular-Duty balls Photos 1) As mentioned, we have a Tournament Photographer. There is no longer a photo waiver to fill out. 2) Instead, our photography policy will be posted on-site if you want to review it (if any issue, have them talk to you after) T-Shirt Design Contest Winner A special shout-out to Steve Mileham of Portland, OR, the winner of our T-shirt design contest this year. 5 Head Referee/Officials 1) One official per site (two at Tualatin Hills and Mountain Park) 2) Head Referee, Darryl Kealy, will remain mainly at Tualatin Hills 3) If questions come up, please flag down official. Once you make contact with official, continue play until they arrive. 4) If you cannot find an official, find a staff person in a bright green STAFF or USTA shirt. They can contact the official if necessary. Darryl Kealy We look forward to being part of this event! When an official is on court and a ball from another court comes onto the court, we will be calling a let. If an official is not on a court and your ball rolls into another court, please say ball on court and do not call a let let the players on that court decide. If you have a medical time out, the official will ask if you have someone to treat you. Once treatment starts, you will have 3 minutes, and then you must decide if you will continue or stop play. Officials will try to count down 3 minutes, 2 minutes, 1 minute. If your match goes into a third set tiebreak, an official will gravitate toward your court. If you see an official, they may ask if you d like them to keep score for you. You can tell them yes or no. If all say no, they won t stay on your court. Yes, if a ball rolls on court after a first serve, the server gets a first serve. The player who hit the ball is the one who calls it if a double bounce occurs, or if an official is there, they can call it. The first three games are continuous play, but you can certainly stop and get a drink, but don t sit down - just drink and continue on Who can call a foot fault? If there is not an official, you can let them know they are foot faulting, but you cannot call one for them. Ask an official to come to the court. They will stay for that serve, and stay for other players service games on that court as well, most likely. Will official call a foot fault? If an official sees a foot fall, they will call it.
