1 USTA PACIFIC NORTHWEST E-NEWSLETTER E MARCH 2013 By Matthew Warren Executive Director We are proud to introduce the inaugural issue of Passing Shots our monthly e-newsletter. During my Listening to You Tour in 2012, one of the major themes was that USTA/PNW needed to improve our communication. In response, we have developed this monthly e-newsletter which serves as your one-stop resource for all tennis opportunities in the Pacific Northwest. Our primary goal is to streamline all of our information to allow you to play as much tennis as possible. As the table of contents suggests, Passing Shots will provide important registration information and overviews of USTA programs and those of our organization members (clubs, facilities, etc.). Please note that, as a service to our organization members, we publish appropriate submissions that are furnished to our office by the deadline; we expect the number of submissions to grow over time and strongly encourage all of our organization members to take advantage of this opportunity. We hope that you enjoy this new resource, specially designed for you! Local Facilities Step Up to Save Sammamish Club USTA League Teams As of March 1 this year, there were 26 Sammamish Club USTA League teams that no longer had a home. This was due to the sale of the Sammamish Club in Issaquah, Wash., and having it no longer be an indoor tennis facility. Northwest Washington League Coordinator Kim Niino stepped up and immediately contacted all local facilities to seek out available indoor courts for the Sammamish teams remaining home matches. Despite tight court schedules, every facility that was asked to provide more courts did so. Eastside Tennis Center in Kirkland provided the most help, taking in 8 of 26 teams for their remaining home matches. Pro Sports Club, AV Performance Tennis Club, and Amy Yee Tennis Center also took a large number of teams. Thanks to all our partners in the greater Seattle tennis community that helped the Sammamish Club USTA League teams keep playing this winter! USTA/PNW Senior Mixed Teams Head to National Invitational The USTA/PNW has four teams that will compete in the USTA Senior Mixed Invitational in Chattanooga, Tennessee on March The USTA/PNW teams are: 6.0 Bellevue Club, Bellevue, Wash., (Captain: Clemente); 7.0 Sammamish Club, Issaquah, Wash., (Captain: Moffitt); 8.0 Sage Springs, Sunriver, Ore., (Co-captains: Vitolins/O Neil); 9.0 West Hills R.C., Portland, Ore., (Captain: Borchers). Good luck to all of our teams!
