Dog days of summer around Seattle happen much earlier than the rest of the country. I hope this summer finds you enjoying the great outdoors. Summer usually means that there are lots of courts available at the club for you to practice and improve your skills for the upcoming fall. It s also a good time to get in shape as you spend more time doing nontennis activities. It looks to be a warm July so stay hydrated and play indoor tennis to stay out of the sun. To update you on some happenings around the club, two new water fountains have been Tennis Programs Submitted by Allan Overland We are excited to bring back our collection of summer junior camps for 2018! 2 Court Report Volume 25, Issue 4 Pro Tip: Serve and Volley Submitted by Bill Bartlett Page 2 July is the time of year when the serve and volley is used more often by the Pros. The grass court season is in full swing culminating with Wimbledon last weekend. If you had a chance to watch Wimbledon this year, you may have noticed how the Pros serve and volley. You will see them use three basic types of serves to set up an easy volley. The wide serve, the body serve and the kick serve. The wide serve is used to get the returner to take a step and reach for the ball. This will usually cause the return to pop up, enabling the server to hit a winning volley. The body serve also makes the returner take a step to get enough distance to hit the Junior Results Submitted by Jim Robison ball. This will often jam the returner forcing a weak return. Finally, the heavy topspin serve (kick serve) will position the ball too high for the returner to hit a strong shot. The kick serve will also give the server more time to get to the net. So to serve and volley well mix up your serves. Serve wide or at the body of the returner, forcing the returner to take a step to get into position to hit the ball. Use the kick serve to keep the ball high and out of the returner's wheel house. You will then be able to force your opponent to hit week returns. You will be surprise how easy it will be to serve and volley. Pete Sampras won 7 titles at Wimbledon from with his serve and volley game. Summertime offers numerous opportunities for pacific northwest junior players to put their skills to the test in tournaments throughout the section. Thirty-two tournaments were held in the month of June alone, including two tournaments held here at BETC and junior sectionals in Yakima.
