Just wanted to insert a quick reminder to you all that the submission deadline for 2007 work cards is readily approaching. We have until 10/15/07 to get them into John s hands, but please don t wait until the last minute to submit them, as John needs time to review them for accuracy before submitting to the National Office. A few suggestions and reminders below: Please pay special attention to the items listed below, as they are the 3 most frequent errors on the work card: 1. Missing officials signature (on cover page) 2. Missing USTA card number and expire date (on cover page) 3. Missing 2007 class attended information (on inside) Easy fold directions for the card: fold it the long way, at 90 degrees to the fold that it comes with. It will fit, with this one fold, in a legal envelope, with one stamp. No need to add more. Some officials pay up to $2.50 for postage and a bubble wrap envelope, which is not necessary. No faxes accepted: you must send originals. Make a copy in case USPS loses your card. It has happened to officials in the past, so don t let it happen to you this year! 2 PNW Tennis Officials Committee By John Rodenberg Members of this 11 person committee are recruited and appointed by the Chair. Terms are indefinite and each person on the committee has a role to fill. Some take a lot of work, while some don t take much work or time. All are important because one person cannot do it all. In sections with many, many officials, like the 1500 in the Southern Section, there are many geographic districts that make up a section, and each may have a committee. Our committee rarely meets as a group, but meetings and phone meetings are frequent. There is not that much official business, most of it is just the work that is needed to recruit, train, outfit certify, assign and monitor the activities of a 90 person volunteer group that is only paid for time on the court. 3 The Official Uniform By John Rodenberg With summer turning to fall and with the new shirts now 6 months old, it is time to think of the complete uniform in cooler weather terms. Below you will find a breakdown of each part of the uniform. Shoes and socks: White socks should be worn with mostly white, clean tennis shoes. Avoid the shoes that you garden and mow lawn in. Consider wearing a pair that you bought for tennis playing but don t have much tread left. Dedicate them to your uniform. Shirt: The two colors of the new spandex tops are correctly called royal blue and bright red. A coordinated short or long sleeve undershirt in blue, red or white is fine. The long sleeve extending below the short sleeve shirt is fine. Slacks or shorts: Any shade of khaki is fine. Wear a khaki or brown belt, even if you don t need one. It makes your outfit look sharp. And always remember to tuck your shirt in. Full length pants or shorts are the only two choices. No capri or pirate pant length, no cargo pants (they have too many distracting tabs, zippers, snaps, buckles and are very loose fitting), no kilts, no skirts and no swimsuits. Outerwear: A navy blue pullover, jacket, or sweater is fine. It can be purchased from the approved source and will come with the USTA logo. You may also choose to search for a nice navy blue pullover, jacket, or sweater and attach one of the 1 x 4 sew-on labels that you can buy for $1 each. Make sure it is placed correctly and sewn nicely, and it will look fine. Navy button-down long sleeve shirts are not acceptable. Vests: Navy blue from approved source, or you can attach a label to your own, as above. Caps or Visors: Buy baseball style or floppy brim style from the approved source, and it will be correct color and logo. Or, find a khaki hat in the styles mentioned and sew the label on it. White is not approved for caps or visors, and other colors are marginal. You may be okay with these colors locally, but you may be asked to remove it at some events if it is not khaki. Consider rounding out your uniform with the correct tools stored in your pocket or carried in hand such as a stopwatch, coin, 36 measuring device and pencil. As always, be sure to turn your cell phone off and put it away. Page 3 of 5

4 Tennis Fest 2007: Ready to Rock the Rose City in October By Blair Thompson Tennis Fest 2007 is coming to the Portland area October An interactive tennis extravaganza, Tennis Fest will feature a free tennis carnival open to all: kids and adults, able-bodied and wheelchair players. The carnival will highlight the fun and fitness of the sport for all ages and ability levels. Additional Tennis Fest events will include a free professional exhibition featuring former world-ranked tennis pros Tom Gullikson and Patrick Galbraith along with three-time NCAA All-American and UW star Alex Vlaski. Both of those Tennis Fest events will be free of charge and open to the public at Portland Tennis Center and Tualatin Hills Tennis Center in Beaverton, respectively. When I was 23 I threw my back out, and then I had to suffer a drive from Anacortes to Seattle, barely able to keep my eyes open, and fighting searing pain. Bed ridden for a few days, luckily I was 23 and I recovered quickly. From that moment I started taking stretching seriously. First I had to correct my body s problem. I went to a chiropractor and a couple of pops later I was back to normal. However I did not want to arrive at this situation again. I looked into what caused the problem, and the text and information that kept pounding me in the face was the same, stretch and strengthen. There was something to the good old fashioned stretch and touch your toes approach. However I also needed to strengthen my abdominal muscles (Abs). Strong abs, also known as the body s core, created a strong back as the abs muscles support this vital body part. If I had taken this simple approach, I may never have thrown out my back in the first place. Now you might be wondering why I have broached this subject, simple, how many of us stretch while we are out on the court officiating? I m not seeing a lot of hands go up. As officials we really need to start watching the pros and following their lead. In this case a great local role model is Ichiro, next time you go to a game, keep an eye on the diminutive center fielder, as he will continue to stretch every inning. Is it any wonder why Ichiro has yet to get hurt? Page 4 of 5

5 Below are a couple of my favorite stretches, you might have your own, and maybe that would be a good piece for another article that s a hint! Common stretches you can do upon arriving at court or at your home for seconds. If any of these stretches are too tough start off easy and increase as much as you can without pain. -Reach down and touch your toes, but keep your back as straight as possible. To stretch you do not actually need to touch your toes. -While standing pull one leg up to your butt and try and point your knee strait down to the ground, keeping back strait, switch. -Lay on the ground and point your foot as high and strait as possible and then pull towards yourself and hold, switch. Make sure to keep shoulder blades and head on floor. -While still sitting bring your legs up towards you, cross one leg in front of the other, and with both hands reach under the leg that is NOT crossed and gently pull your leg towards your chest and hold, switch. You should feel a stretch in your hip. -Finally lay on a bed or a flat bench, head touching, and kick one leg back and hold. Abs exercises: Always make sure to flex your abs when doing an exercise -Take a light weight, or virtually anything, hold in your hand and lean to your right, just so you can feel your muscles work, do reps, and switch. -Lay on your back and while keeping your back strait do have a half sit up, do Do not pull from behind the head. -Best abs work out of all Flex your abs for as long as you can, as many times a day as you can remember, especially effective while on court, this is a great and easy strength builder. After saying all this, do I expect you to jump on the stretch wagon? No. Do I pretend to be all knowing in this subject? No. Am I a certified physical trainer or doctor? No. Am I hoping this article will get you thinking about shoring up your back and strengthen your abs? You Bet! As officials we spend a lot of time on hard court, I feel we should spend it wisely.
