4 JimRAGAN H E A D C O A C H N I N T H S E A S O N 2006 BIG 12 COACH OF THE YEAR In his ninth season as the head coach of the University of Oklahoma men s golf squad, Jim Ragan has gained a reputation for having his teams ready and playing their best at the end of the season. His ability to develop players has allowed his teams to win both conference and regional championships at OU. Whether traveling to the links with a group of seasoned veterans and winning the 2006 Big 12 Championship or earning Ragan s eighth consecutive NCAA Regional bid in 2008 when nine of the 10 roster spots were filled by underclassmen, Ragan has a knack for maximizing every player s potential. Under the guidance of Ragan, a youthful 2008 squad posted nine top-10 finishes, including three straight heading into postseason play. In 2006, Ragan led the Sooners to the school s first Big 12 golf championship, earning conference Coach of the Year honors in the process. The ninth-year coach has seen OU advance to NCAA postseason play in every year of his Oklahoma tenure while the 2008 season saw the Sooners finish 13th at the NCAA West Regional in Bremerton, Wash. Oklahoma narrowly missed a berth in the NCAA Championships, finishing just four strokes off the cut. A honors student at Mississippi State University, academic success has also been a benchmark of the OU golf program under Ragan. The men s golf team consistently produces academic honors at the conference and national level. In 2008, senior Phillip Bryan was named the PING All-Region team and earned first team Academic All-Big 12 for the third consecutive season. He was also named to the Cleveland Golf All-American scholar team in 2008 by the Golf Coaches Association of America. Craig Lurie earned Academic All-Big 12 honors as a senior in 2005, while a year prio, OU placed its three seniors Martin Flores, Doug Manor and Blake Martin on the Academic All-Big 12 first team. Martin was also named a Cleveland Golf All-America Scholar by the GCAA. Ragan also coached Vanderbilt s first two men s golf All-America scholars and, in 2003, produced a nation-leading and OU-record three GCAA All-American Scholars in Flores, Manor and Martin. In 2004, Ragan was honored as the Easton Golf Pride Regional Coach of the Year for the Central Region, an award he also won in In Ragan s first season, the Sooners had one of their most successful postseason runs in history. At the NCAA Championships in Durham, N.C., OU advanced to the third and fourth rounds for the first time since 1993 and finished tied for 12th overall the best finish since Ragan was the head coach at Vanderbilt for three years and was an assistant coach at the University of Texas for three seasons as well. Ragan has continued to develop his skills as a coach. He has recently completed Level 3 certification with the Titleist Performance Institute Certification Program. T.P.I. is a program based on evalutation and implementation of golf specific exercises and workouts to improve golf performance. Ragan s certification as a level three fitness professional places him in an elite category of just 74 individuals world wide with this certification. He is one of only a few PGA Professionals to compete level three on the fitness professional tract. I have always enjoyed and been interested in working out and how it affects golf performance, said Ragan. Titleist has made a huge comittment to our sport by allowing the resources for research and development to create the foundation in which player development will build on for many years to come. I feel fortunate to be on the ground floor which will undoubtably prove to develop healthier players who will play better golf than we have even seen before. Ragan has a reputation for recruiting highly talented players. While with Texas, he was highly involved in the recruitment of future PGA Tour player David Gossett. At Vanderbilt, he recruited Brandt Snedeker, who became the Commodores first All-American, SEC Player of the Year and won the 2003 U.S. Public Links At Oklahoma, Ragan signed the first two freshmen in program history to earn All-America honors Carlos Del Moral and Anthony Kim. Ragan lives in Norman with wife Jacque and daughters Kate and Haley. I am excited about Davis joining our team next fall, said OU head coach Jim Ragan. He is an outstanding player who has dedicated much of his life to developing his golf game. He made a commitment to live away from home where he could focus on reaching his potential as a player. I believe his plan has worked well and we are fortunate to have him decide to become a Sooner. Added Ragan, I have been very impressed from the moment I met Davis by his level of maturity and focus on and off the golf course. I believe he will make an immediate impact on our team. Lee joins a list of highly acclaimed players that Ragan has signed at OU including PGA Tour star Anthony Kim and European Tour players Carlos Del Moral and Jordi Garcia, along with a host of other players in the professional ranks. 7 PUMPHREY NAMED BIG 12 GOLFER OF THE MONTH: IRVING, Texas Fresh off a pair of career-best top-five finishes to end the fall season, OU s Riley Pumphrey was named co-big 12 Golfer of the Month, the conference announced Wednesday. The selection marked the first conference honor for the Georgetown, Texas, product, who shared the honor with Kansas State s Mitchell Gregson. Pumphrey led Oklahoma to back-to-back top-two finishes in October, including a win at the Macdonald Cup, its first team title since the 2006 Big 12 Championship. The redshirt-freshman fired a personal-best, 5-under-par 65 in the first round of the Macdonald Cup, vaulting to the top of the individual leaderboard after round one and giving OU a first-day lead it wouldn t relinquish. His tournamentopening 65 was the lowest round for any Sooner golfer during fall play and led to a fifth-place finish for Pumphrey. Pumphrey continued his stellar play at the Baylor Intercollegiate, finishing in a tie for second in the 66-player field that included four players ranked in the latest Golfweek top-35. His play vaulted OU to a share of second at Royal Oaks Country Club, in a field that included a pair of squads ranked in the latest Golfweek top-10 poll (No. 2 Arkansas and No. 10 Baylor). KIM CRUSHES GARCIA AS U.S. WINS RYDER CUP LOUISVILLE, Ky. (AP) -- Wearing a gaudy USA belt buckle and pumping his fist all around the course, Anthony Kim gave the Americans a crucial point Sunday as they tried to take back the Ryder Cup. Kim knocked off European stalwart Sergio Garcia 5 and 4, ending the first match of the day with an 8-foot par putt at the 14th hole. He handed the Spaniard the worst loss of his Ryder Cup career. Kim s point gave the Americans a 10-7 lead. They needed 14½ points to win the gold chalice for first time since Kim played with plenty of attitude against Garcia, who finished the weekend with an record. It was the first time in five Ryder Cup appearances that he failed to win a match. I wouldn t trade this for 10 million dollars, said Kim, at 23 the youngest member of the American team. This was the experience of a lifetime. Garcia had a lead in only four of the 65 holes he played at Valhalla Golf Club. I felt like I hit some good shots, he said. I just couldn t get anything right. Two fan favorites, Boo Weekley and Kenny Perry, were also playing well for the home team. Weekley did his best to fire up an already raucous crowd. After teeing off at No. 1, the country boy from the Florida Panhandle stuck the club between his legs and galloped down the first fairway as if he were on a horse. RYDER CUP RECAP CONTINUED: The Americans were trying to win for the first time since the Miracle at Brookline nine years ago. The only concern I have is guys getting ahead of themselves, U.S. captain Paul Azinger said. I ll try to keep them in the present. Kim set a blistering pace with three birdies in the first four holes, and Garcia couldn t keep up. His drive at No. 6 slid off the side of a hill and forced him to take an unplayable penalty after a lengthy discussion with the officials. At the next hole, he knocked two balls into the water and conceded the hole before the players even reached the green. There appeared to be plenty of bad blood between the players, especially when Kim kept declining to concede short putts to the Spaniard and seemed perturbed that Garcia wanted relief when his ball wound up next to a stone staircase at No. 6. Do what you ve got to do, Kim sniffed to the referee. The take-no-prisoners strategy paid off at No. 11, where Garcia missed from about 3 feet to lose the hole. Kim slapped hands with the gallery on his way to the next tee, and needed just three more holes to finish it off. That short miss at 11 kind of put the dagger in me, Garcia said. Kim didn t even realize he had won as he walked away from the 14th. Someone told him he didn t need to play any more holes, and he returned to the green to shake hands with Garcia. They appeared to be over any hard feelings, embracing warmly. Garcia patted his opponent on the chest and mouthed to him, You played great. KIM, RYDER CUP TEAM PLEDGE SUPPORT LOUISVILLE, Ky. -- Former University of Oklahoma All-American Anthony Kim and fellow U.S. Ryder Cup Team participants took time away from their preparations for the 37th Ryder Cup to lend a hand to U.S.-based charitable organizations, students at colleges and universities nationwide and the families of veterans who either perished or were wounded in the line of duty. Kim and the other U.S. Ryder Cup Team participants, as well as U.S. Ryder Cup Team Captain Paul Azinger, are contributing $100,000 to the charity of their choice; $90,000 to the college/university of their choice for Play Golf America University programming; and $10,000 to the Folds of Honor Foundation to support scholarships for families of veterans who either perished or were wounded in the line of duty while serving in Iraq or Afghanistan. 14 TOURNAMENT RECAPS Sooners Open Season In Seventh: CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. -- The University of Oklahoma men s golf squad concluded the 2008 Aldila Scenic City Invitational in seventh place after finishing the event with back-to-back under-par team rounds on Sept. 9, at Council Fire Golf Club in Chattanooga, Tenn. The 16 squads were forced to play 36 holes today after weather suspended Monday afternoon s round until this morning. OU entered today s action in 10th place, but quickly moved up the leaderboard after red-figure morning rounds from Ben Blundell (70) and Liam Logan (69). Blundell fired his third consecutive 2-under-par 70 in afternoon play, finishing the 54-hole event in 10th place to lead the Sooners. The Rowlett, Texas, native played the par-5 s in eight under fashion for the tournament and carded 16 birdies over three rounds -- third most among the 90-player field. Three shots back was teammate Liam Logan, who notched back-to-back rounds of 69 on Tuesday, finishing in a tie for 20th. Logan s consecutive 3-under-par rounds were the lowest for any OU golfer during the event. In his first collegiate action, redshirt-freshman Riley Pumphrey stood 40th after rounds of 72,74,72. Rounding out the OU scoring were Ryan Sirman (+4) and Tyler Rody (+11), who both shot 73 in Tuesday s final round. Sirman finished in 49th while Rody was seven shots back in a tie for 69th. Oklahoma Places 12th at Shoal Creek: BIRMINGHAM, Ala. -- The University of Oklahoma men s golf team finished the 54- hole Shoal Creek Intercollegiate in 12th place on Sept. 23, in Birmingham, Ala. The Sooners fired a final-round team score of 313 (+25) at the par-72, 7,154-yard layout. Pacing the Sooners was Liam Logan, who fired a final-round 76. The sophomore finished the event in 36th-place at +13. A stroke back was redshirt-freshman Riley Pumphrey, who concluded his second collegiate event in 39th. The Georgetown, Texas, product carded rounds of 78, 74 and 78. Tyler Rody stood 41st at 14-over after rounds of 81, 74 and 76, while Ryan Sirman placed 58th after shooting a final-round 86. After being disqualified late in round one, junior Ben Blundell carded rounds of 78 and 83 in closing the event. We are certainly disappointed with how we played this week, head coach Jim Ragan said. Consistency is vital with any squad, especially a younger one, and we will work on that as we prepare for our upcoming events. Overnight-leader Baylor held on for a two-stroke victory over Mississippi. The Bears shot a final-round team score of 299 (+11) for the narrow victory after Ole Miss carded a team score of 290 (+2) on Tuesday. Rhys Enoch of East Tennessee St. fired a 1-under-par 71 in catching overnight leader Zack Sucher (UAB) for medalist honors at -2. Sucher shot 73 in today s final round. Chattanooga, ranked No. 12 in the Golfweek preseason rankings, cruised to a 14 shot win after carding a tournament-record final round of 266 (22-under par). Southeastern Louisiana s Matt Carvell followed up his opening round 60 (-12) with rounds of 70 and 68 to earn medalist honors with a 54-hole tournament-record total of 198 (-18) BIG 12 CHAMPIONSHIP OU MEN S GOLF NOTES 14

15 Sooners Win MacDonald Cup: NEW HAVEN, Conn. - The OU men s golf team picked up its first victory of the season with an eight-shot win at the rain-soaked Macdonald Cup in New Haven, Conn., on Oct. 4. The Sooners recorded a final-round team score of 289 (+9), defeating 13 other squads at the par-70, 6,750-yard Course at Yale. On top of the competition, OU had to also battle the elements as inclement weather forced a weather delay in today s final round. I was proud of our guys today, said head coach Jim Ragan. They played well on a difficult course in poor conditions. We did not score as well as we would have liked on the front nine with the rain delay, but came back and played really well on the back side. Starting one junior, two sophomores and a pair of freshmen, Oklahoma picked up its fifth top-five finish since the start of last season. I knew going into today we would come out of this tournament a better team, said Ragan, following the trophy presentation. The experience of competing for a win is a valuable lesson regardless of the outcome. We were fortunate to play well enough to win. Sophomore Liam Logan fired an even-par 70 on Sunday, finishing the 54-hole event in second a career best for the Fort Worth, Texas, native. Logan s 210 (E) tournament total was two shots shy of medalist Jason Thresher ( ) of Bryant University. Four shots behind Logan was Riley Pumphrey (+4). The redshirt-freshman tied for fifth place (also marking a career best) after a final-round 74. Competing in his first collegiate event, true-freshman Chris Wilson placed eighth after rounds of 71, 74 and 71. Rounding out the OU team scoring was Eric Durbin s 74 on Sunday. Durbin finished in a tie for 18th at +12 after his third consecutive round of 74. Cameron Meyers was disqualified in today s final round for signing an incorrect scorecard after rounds of 78 and 73 on Saturday. We had a great team effort this weekend, added Ragan. Liam played very well and Chris did a super job in his first tournament. Riley got us off to a great start in round one, Eric played steady and Cameron helped us out in the second round. Oklahoma Places Second Amongst Talented Field: DALLAS, Texas -- Matching yesterday afternoon s team score of 287 (+3), the OU men s golf squad defeated two squads ranked in the latest Golfstat top-10 (No. 2 Arkansas and No. 10 Baylor) en route to a share of second place at the Baylor Intercollegiate on Oct. 28. After opening the tournament with a team score of 298 (+14) at the par-71, 7,068- yard Royal Oaks Country Club, the Sooners played their final 36 holes a combined six-over, second-lowest only to tournament-host Baylor. I was extremely proud of the way we hung in there early after not playing our best golf to start today s round, said head coach Jim Ragan. Just as we did in our victory at Yale, we played our final nine holes under par, which really shows signs of maturity for such a young squad. Paving the way for Oklahoma were a pair of freshmen in Riley Pumphrey ( ) and Chris Wilson ( ), who finished in a tie for second and ninth, respectively. Pumphrey s runner-up effort marked a career best, while Wilson posted his second consecutive top-10 finish after placing eighth at the Macdonald Cup on Oct. 5. Sophomore Liam Logan rebounded from a first-round 76 with a 72 on Monday afternoon and sits at +6, in a tie for 18th. Ben Blundell ( ) and Liam Logan ( ) both tied for 21st at +9, while Eric Durbin finished in a share for 42nd at +15 after shooting his lowest round of the event (72) on Tuesday. We did a lot of good things out there, but also have some areas where we can improve heading into the spring, added Ragan. A good sign is that the guys are recognizing immediately some of those little mistakes and how they can avoid those in the future and I really feel that we can grow from that. No. 31 Texas A&M, the overnight leader, held on for a two-shot victory at 870 (+18) over OU and Lamar. Texas A&M and Lamar both carded final-round scores of 293 (+9), allowing the Sooners to close the gap after their strong final round. SMU s James Kwon garnered individual medalist honors after a final-round 69. Kwon finished the event at as the only golfer in red figures (-1), besting Pumphrey and Lamar s Justin Harding by a shot. Tournament host Yale finished second in the team standings after a finalround 293 (+13) BIG 12 CHAMPIONSHIP OU MEN S GOLF NOTES 15
