Welcome Lady Golfers! Seabrook Island Ladies Golf Association (SILGA) is open to all Seabrook Island lady golfers who are Club members. Our organization is dedicated to supporting programs that make golf more welcoming and accessible for those who wish to play the game. We organize weekly competitive games, special events that emphasize casual golf and social interaction, as well as club and inter club tournaments. Our focus this year will be on welcoming interested ladies into SILGA as new members, and promoting activities designed to appeal to a wide range of interests and skill levels - involving both competitive and casual golf events. We also offer opportunities for those who want to increase their enjoyment of the game through USGA professional-run golf clinics for women, mentoring programs that focus on pace of play, golf etiquette and rules, and finding a buddy lady golfer with whom to play. So, whether you play 18 or 9 holes -- and whether you prefer casual or competitive play -- SILGA offers something to appeal to your interests and skill level. We hope to see you on the greens! Sue Dostal Chairperson, SILGA (203)
Questions & Answers How do I join SILGA? Signing up for SILGA is easy - either electronically by sending an to SeabrookIslandLadiesGolfAssoc@gmail.com or by calling the Golf Pro Shop at (843) Explain that you want to become a SILGA member and provide us with your basic contact information. What will it cost to join? The annual dues for SILGA are $25. Once the Seabrook Island Club gets your information, they will bill your Club statement for this amount, and your name will be added to our membership roster. Then you will begin to receive weekly eblasts announcing upcoming SILGA events, winners of recent tournaments and other activities of interest. The cost to participate in specific events varies. There is a minimal cost for events where prizes are awarded: weekly games where prizes are awarded cost is $5 for SILGA members, and $8 ($5 entry plus $3 dues) for non-members; cost for Major tournaments is $10. These additional charges cover the cost of that day s prizes. Some special events involve additional charges, which vary by event. What are the benefits of joining SILGA? First and foremost, SILGA membership gives you access to a series of tournaments and events designed to appeal to lady golfers of all levels. Our events range from casual golf events to major tournaments and include fun scrambles and shambles. We also offer opportunities to learn more about pace of play, golf etiquette, and rules that will give you more confidence on the course as well as a series of skill development learning sessions specifically designed for women. These activities are intended to give you a chance to improve your game, play competitively, make new friends and enjoy what Seabrook Island has to offer both on and off the links.
How do I find out about SILGA events? Our new website (SILGA.org) contains a wide range of information about SILGA and its events. On the website, you can find a schedule of tournaments and events, names of SILGA leaders, and a listing of SILGA members. To actually sign up for a SILGA event you need to register for Golf Genius which is an online tournament management system software program. Once you become a SILGA member, you will receive information on how to log on to Golf Genius, sign-up online for SILGA Events, edit or even cancel your reservation if needed. Should I play 9 holes or 18 holes? A secret to any golfer fully enjoying this sport is to find the right niche. Each weekly SILGA game is made up of players with varying handicaps and skill levels. Playing 9 holes is a good way to start for new golfers or those returning to the game after an absence of time. The play is relaxing, more casual, and there is a shorter time commitment (2 hours). Playing 18 holes is suitable for those who want to gain more experience, participate in fun competitive games and are willing to commit 4 hours to complete their game. If you are not sure where to begin, contact a SILGA officer who can talk to you about these options in more detail. If interested, ask for information about our buddy program which introduces you to another golfer with whom you can set up a casual round weekly, if you wish. I don t have a handicap yet. Is it required? Most events require a handicap, although the more casual events do not. As you play more, you will definitely want to establish a handicap. That way you will have a baseline against which to measure your progress. The Pro Shop will set you up and show you how to enter your scores. Posting scores is an important part of maintaining a handicap and ensures that your handicap is fair and accurate.

Seabrook Island Club - Local Rules Environmentally Sensitive Areas These areas exist on holes 15, 16 and 17 on Ocean Winds. The hazards are marked with red or yellow stakes with green tops, but the contours of the hazards do not necessarily conform to a straight line between the stakes. To further define the hazard boundaries, it must be inferred that the line of the hazard should conform to the unmown grass or vegetation that is approximately between the hazard stakes. Play from within the environmentally sensitive areas is prohibited. If the ball lies within the hazard, the player must take a penalty stroke and proceed under Rule 26-1 (water hazard). If the ball does not lie within the hazard, but the player must stand in the hazard to play the next stroke, he must take relief (without penalty) no closer to the hole such that the stroke may be played without standing in the hazard. Ocean Winds #15 Tee Shot A drop area is available on #15 as an additional option for balls hit into the fronting water hazard.
Seabrook Island Club - Local Rules Sprinkler Heads Close to Putting Green Relief from interference by an immovable obstruction may be taken under Rule In addition, if a ball lies off the putting green but not in a hazard and an immovable obstruction on or within two club lengths of the putting green and within two club lengths of the ball intervenes on the line of play between the ball and the hole, the player may take relief as follows: The ball must be lifted and dropped at the nearest point to where the ball lay that (a) is not nearer the hole, (b) avoids intervention and (c) is not in a hazard or on a putting green. The ball may be cleaned when lifted. SILGA Local Rule When hitting over a water hazard defined by yellow lines and/or yellow stakes (green topped or not) the player may drop her ball in the designated drop area after she has hit two balls in the water. The scoring is as follows: 1 in the hazard, 2 penalty, 3 in the hazard, 4 penalty-the player is hitting 5 in the drop area. There is not an additional penalty for dropping the ball in the drop area. This local rule will be in effect for SILGA events including the Member-Guest Tournament. It will not be in effect for other major tournaments.
Pace of Play Tips {Excerpted from USGA s suggested tips for improving pace of play: Pace of Play is an important concept all golfers need to apply to their game if golf rounds and clubs like ours are to run efficiently. Playing at a better pace is not about hurrying up or rushing around the course. It is simply about being more efficient with your time, as well as everyone else s. Here are some simple tips for improving pace of play: Start smart: Make a point to arrive at the tee early with your golf equipment in order, ready to play. Have essentials on hand like tees, gloves and appropriate clothing for the day s weather conditions and always carry two balls with you in the event you need to hit a provisional. And remember, if you come early enough to practice your swing and your putting, you are less likely to need multiple practice swings during your round.
Minimize your time on the tee: Hit when ready. If you think your original ball might be lost or out of bounds, save time by playing a provisional ball. Plan your shot before you get to your ball: Always think ahead. Determine your yardage and make your club selection before it is your turn to play. You can do this while others are playing, without disruption. If you re not certain which club to use, bring 2 or 3 clubs with you and walk to your ball, line up and take a practice swing as long as you are not in the way of anyone hitting the ball. Once you hit the ball, hold onto your clubs in the cart until you reach the next place where you or your partner will hit. Return those clubs to the bag at the same time you are selecting clubs for your next shot. If done for each shot and by each player, returning clubs while you select your next clubs can speed play significantly. Even a small step like this saves time. Keep your pre-shot routine short: Most importantly, be ready to hit when it is your turn. Try to take no more than one practice swing, then set up to the ball and play your shot. Be efficient after your shot too. Start moving toward your next shot promptly. Aim to play in 40 seconds: From club selection to pre-shot routine to club to ball impact, strive to hit your shot in 40 seconds when it is your turn to play. Help keep play moving at a brisk pace. Develop an eye for distance: If you need to determine precise distance, try to find a yardage marker before you reach your ball, or step off the yardage on the way to your ball. If others you are playing with have a range finder/gps, you can ask that player for yardage information without penalty.
When sharing a cart, use a buddy system: Don t wait in the cart while your cartmate hits and then drive to your ball. Where appropriate, get out and walk to your ball with a few clubs. Be ready to play when it is your turn and then let your cartmate pick you up. Or, drive to your ball after you drop your cartmate off and then pick him or her up after you hit. Be helpful to others in your group: Follow the flight of all tee shots, not just your own. Once in the fairway, help others look for their ball if you already know the location of yours. Volunteer to fill in a divot or rake a bunker for another player if needed. Be ready to attend the flagstick for others. Keep up with the group in front of you: Your correct position on the course is immediately behind the group in front of you, not immediately in front of the group behind you. Arrive at your next shot just before the group in front leaves the area in front of you. If you are consistently not able to keep up and a gap opens in front of you, invite the group behind you to play through, irrespective of the number of players in the group.
Be efficient on the putting green: Mark your ball, lift and clean it when you arrive at the putting green so you will be ready to replace it when it is your turn to play. You can usually line up your putt while others are putting, without disturbing them. Leave your clubs on the side of the putting green closest to the next tee, and leave the green promptly after holing out. Wait until the next tee to record your score. Remember to pick up your ball if you are out of the hole. If not in an individual stroke play competition, it is generally OK to pick up your ball and move on to the next hole if you are out of a hole and want to maintain pace of play. This applies in match play and many forms of stroke play, including Stableford and best-ball play.
Annual Awards for Play During SILGA Events SILGA awards prizes annually in three categories: Birdies Ringers Most Improved Golfer Birdies and Ringers are tracked by our Pro Shop in Golf Genius, along with all other SILGA scores. Most Improved Player is determined using handicaps tracked at the beginning and end of the year. Results and awards are announced during Annual Meeting. Events & Terms Defined Ace of the Month: Each month, an 18 hole individual net best ball event is played. The winner is titled Ace of the Month. All Aces play in a Shootout Tournament at the end of the year to determine the Ace of the Year. Best Ball Events: Best ball events can be played using 2-, 3- or 4-person teams. Each player on the team plays her own golf ball throughout the round, and on each hole the low score (or best ball ) of the group serves as the team score. Equitable Stroke Control (ESC): This is part of the USGA Handicap System, and is a feature that is designed to minimize the effects of disaster holes on your handicap index. Equitable Stroke Control sets a maximum per-hole score that you can turn in for handicap purposes. Consult the Pro Shop to determine the maximum number you may post on any hole. 18-Hole Equitable Stroke Control Course Handicap Maximum Number on Any Hole 9 or less Double Bogey 10 through through through or more 10 9-Hole Equitable Stroke Control Course Handicap Maximum Number on Any Hole 4 or less Double Bogey 5 through through through or more 10
Events & Terms Defined Handicap Index: Your handicap index is not meant to reflect your average score, it s meant to reflect your best potential. Major Tournaments: The maximum handicap allowed in these tournaments is 36. Players with higher handicaps are welcome to play, but the highest handicap used for tournament players will not exceed 36. All ladies playing in a major SILGA tournament will hit from the yellow (finch) tees. Match Play vs. Stroke Play: In stroke play, golfers accumulate strokes over the course of 9 or 18 holes. The golfer with the fewest strokes at the completion of the round wins. In match play, each hole is a separate competition. The player with the fewest strokes on an individual hole wins that hole; the player winning the most holes wins the match. The stroke total for the 9 or 18 holes simply doesn t matter in match play. Stroke play is more a player vs. the course approach; match play is directly player vs. player, or side vs. side. Scramble or Captain s Choice: A scramble is usually played with 4-person teams, but 2- or 3-person scrambles are popular, too. Each player tees off on each hole. The best of the tee shots is selected and all players play their second shots from that spot. The best of the second shots is determined, then all play their third shots from that spot, and so on until the ball is holed. Shamble: Like in a scramble, all members of a team tee off and the best ball of the four tee shots is selected. All players move their balls to the spot of the best ball. From this point, the hole is played out at stroke play, with all members of the team playing their own ball into the hole. So: select the best shot off the tee, move all balls to that spot, then play individual stroke play until each member of the group has holed out.
