2 What it means to be a bison... the pursuit of athletics in college need not interfere with a fellow s studies, and if you give a boy a well developed body his brain will get the benefit of it. Christy Mathewson, in his book Won in the Ninth, written in 1910 Jeff Pike earned a 4.0 GPA and a spot on the Patriot League Academic Honor Roll last spring. The term student-athlete signifies something extraordinary on the campus of Bucknell University. Being a Bison means that you have the rare blend of physical skills along with the drive and passion needed to succeed at the highest level of collegiate athletics. Being a Bison also means that you are a scholar first and foremost. You believe that values associated with Division I athletics, such as time management, leadership, teamwork and grace under pressure, contribute to a well-rounded college experience. At Bucknell, our students, faculty and staff pride themselves as national leaders in upholding the scholar-athlete ideal that balances a challenging academic program with the demands of successful Division I athletics. Being a Bison means that you have pledged to be a student-athlete in the purest sense. In doing so, you will be rewarded for a lifetime.

3 Bucknell Bison Athletics Setting the Standard of Excellence Bucknell takes great pride in its commitment to excellence on and off the playing fields. From Presidents Cups to Academic All-Americans to graduation rates that are ranked annually among the national top-10, Bucknell is clearly at the head of the class when it comes to upholding the scholar-athlete ideal. According to federal data released in the fall of 2006 by the NCAA and reported on by the Associated Press and The Chronicle of Higher Education, Bucknell s four-year student-athlete graduation rate was highest in the nation among student-athletes who entered college between the and academic years. Bucknell was one of four institutions to graduate at least 90 percent of its student-athletes who enrolled during that four-year period. Bucknell posted a 93-percent rate, followed by Davidson (90 percent), Duke (90 percent) and Georgetown (90 percent). Bucknell has claimed 108 Patriot League Scholar-Athletes of the Year since the league s inception as an all-sports conference in That is more than twice the next-highest total. Bucknell student-athletes comprised nearly one-fourth of the Patriot League Academic Honor Roll in A record total of 360 Bison recorded a GPA of 3.2 or better during their sport s competition season. Among all BU student-athletes, 245 made the Dean s List with GPAs of 3.5 or better in the spring of of Bucknell s 27 varsity squads posted team GPAs of 3.0 or better in the spring of In addition to the 114 ESPN the Magazine Academic All-Americans produced since 1970, Bucknell has also claimed 240 Academic All-District honorees over the same span, including 20 last year. With six more Patriot League championships in , Bucknell has now earned 65 crowns in 17 years in the league. In addition, Bucknell has had 85 conference players of the year, 76 PL coaches of the year and a whopping 442 individual league champions from sports such as cross country, track & field, swimming & diving, tennis and golf. Bucknell has captured the Patriot League Presidents Cup, signifying the league s all-sports champion, 13 times in the 17- year history of the affiliation, including nine of the last 10 years. Bucknell captured the overall, men s and women s Cup standings in , when the Bison teams won six Patriot League titles. It was the 10th straight year and the 13th time overall, that the Bison captured the women s title. In , Bucknell won titles in men s soccer, women s cross country, women s indoor and outdoor track & field, men s golf and women s rowing. The men s basketball, women s basketball and women s soccer teams also captured Patriot League regular-season titles. Bucknell ranks FIFTH in the nation (to Nebraska, Notre Dame, Penn State and Stanford) in total number of ESPN The Magazine All-America selections. A major element in ensuring Bucknell s commitment to athletics excellence is the Kenneth G. Langone Athletics & Recreation Center, which opened fully in One of the finest collegiate athletics facilities of its kind, the center includes the 4,000-seat Sojka Pavilion, the Olympic class Kinney Natatorium, the Krebs Family Fitness Center and the Berger Family Weight Room. A new Hall of Fame area, a display of Bucknell s Medal of Honor recipients, a sports medicine suite, modern offices for coaches and staff, and new locker room and classroom space are also included in the facility s layout.

5 Bison Golf 114 Academic All-Americans Perennial Leader in Graduation Rates Jim Cotner, for nearly 30 years a teacher, coach and administrator in the Lewisburg Area School District, is in his seventh year as head men s golf coach at Bucknell. Cotner has rebuilt the Bison golf program into one of the best in the East, leading the squad to six tournament titles in the last three years, including the 2006 and 2007 Patriot League championships. Cotner has been named the Patriot League Coach of the Year in each of the last three seasons after guiding the Bison through one of the finest stretches in program history. The team was runner-up at the 2005 Patriot League Championship before breaking through with a first-ever PL title in Last spring the Bison defended their crown, capturing the title with a narrow three-shot victory over Navy. The league crowns automatically qualified the Bison for the NCAA Regionals, where they played at the famed Omni Tucson National Golf Resort & Spa in 2006 and at Arizona State s Karsten Course in We have been fortunate to get student-athletes who want to come to Bucknell for the top-notch education, but who are also very passionate about golf, said Cotner. The sport means a lot to them, and they have every opportunity to get better. The facilities here are first-class, with our own Bucknell Golf Club and a great teaching pro in Brian Kelly. A 2000 inductee into the West Branch Chapter of the Pennsylvania Athletic Hall of Fame, Cotner in 2001 retired from Lewisburg Area High School, where he served as the school s director of athletics for 11 years. Since moving to the district in September 1972, Cotner coached the Dragons boys varsity tennis team for four years ( ), the boys varsity golf team for five seasons ( ), the boys junior varsity basketball squad for two years ( ) and the boys varsity basketball team for 17 years ( ). A 1972 graduate of East Stroudsburg University, Cotner is active in the local golf scene, as well. For 10 years he has been president of the North Central Pennsylvania Golf Association, and he is a 10-year USGA Committee Member for Regional Golf Associations. 7 2007 Postseason 114 Academic All-Americans Perennial Leader in Graduation Rates LEWISBURG, Pa. Senior Charlie Waddell shot a 2-under-par 68 to help the Bucknell men s golf team win its second straight Patriot League championship at the Bucknell Golf Club. Waddell, Patriot League Co-Rookie of the Year Andrew Cohen and junior Keita Aoki all finished in the top 10 for the Bison, who claimed the title by three shots over Navy. Bucknell began the final round two strokes behind Army, but the nine-time champion Black Knights faltered on Sunday, posting a team total of 302. Despite counting an 80, Bucknell shot 295 in the final round to hold off Navy, which entered the day in third place, four shots behind the Bison. After opening with rounds of 74 and 73, Waddell turned in his best score of the spring with a 68. He bogeyed the par-5 third hole but never had another miscue the rest of the day. Waddell closed the front nine with birdies on the sixth and ninth holes, and after seven straight pars he made a clutch birdie on No. 17. He then made a terrific recovery on the final hole after his tee shot went well left, clearing the trees before settling by the first tee. He lofted a shot back over the trees near the front of the green and got up and down for par. Waddell, the only repeat Patriot League individual champion in league history, was looking for his third straight first-place medal. Instead, his 215 composite left him in third place, three shots behind Matt Czarnecki of Holy Cross, who shot to become the first Crusader to win the title. Still, Waddell graduated as a four-time All-Patriot League honoree, finishing sixth, first, first and third in his four conference tournament appearances. Cohen, playing in the final group, had a pair of birdies on the day and made a nice chip to save par on No. 18, clinching the title. He shot for a 54-hole total of 220, good for a tie for fourth place. Cohen joined Lehigh s Steve Suarez as the low freshmen in the field, and the two shared PL Rookie of the Year honors. With Bucknell s other three players struggling, Aoki s final-round 73 proved clutch. He shot for a 222 total, placing him in a tie for sixth place and earning him an All-Patriot League certificate for the first time. Aoki recovered from an early double-bogey on the tough par-3 second hole with back-to-back birdies at 9 and 10. Rahul Desai had a good day on Saturday with rounds of 72-76, and he entered the final round in the top 10 before shooting 80 on Sunday. Stuart Lindgren also posted an 80, while Kyle Moran, struggling with a sore back, finished with an 83. Bucknell head coach Jim Cotner earned Patriot League Coach of the Year honors for the third straight year. 8 2007 Postseason TEMPE, Ariz. Andrew Cohen carded a Bucknell tournament-best 2-under-par 70 and the Bison shot a closing 295 to mark their best team score of the three-day NCAA West Regional as they finished in 26th place at Arizona State s Karsten Golf Course. Cohen s performance in the final round was a career-best score, beating his 72 from the George Washington Invitational and the Patriot League Championship. Bucknell started on the 10th hole, and Cohen shot even-par through his first nine holes. He then tallied birdies on the third and fifth holes en route to his 2-under-par score. He finished at +5 for the tournament. Charlie Waddell shot a 1-over-par 73 in the final round and finished the tournament tied for 86th overall in the field of more than 140 golfers with a 1-over 217. He was the top finisher for the Bison. Brian Bartow, who fired an even-par score Friday, followed that career-best performance with a 1-over 73. Kyle Moran and Keita Aoki rounded out the five Bucknell competitors. Moran was at 7-over, while Aoki was at 8-over. In the team standings, Bucknell used its tournament-best 295 score to finish ahead of Monmouth in the team standings. After shooting 299 each of the first two days, the Bison leapfrogged Monmouth, which ended up 15 shots behind Bucknell, which was at +29 for the three-day event. South Carolina overtook UCLA for the top spot with a -44 score. The Bruins were second at -42. The top 10 teams in the 27-team field earned automatic berths to the NCAA Championship. 9 Preview 114 Academic All-Americans Perennial Leader in Graduation Rates BISON STILL BOAST PLENTY OF TALENT AS POST-WADDELL ERA BEGINS The five-man Class of 2007, headed by superstar Charlie Waddell, helped establish a winning golf legacy at Bucknell. Now it will be up to a younger generation to maintain the program s recent championship tradition. After finishing a close second in the Patriot League Championship in 2005, the Bison broke through and won the conference title in both 2006 and Recent graduates like Waddell, Kyle Moran, Chas Wagner and Patrick Yingling had a great deal to do with those championships thanks to their play on the golf course. Now it seems that their impact will last beyond their days in Lewisburg, as head coach Jim Cotner says their leadership and willingness to be positive role models for their younger teammates will have a lasting affect. When you look at the career of Charlie Waddell, other than the fact that he was an outstanding collegiate player and really set the standard for good scoring, his greatest contribution to the program was the value he placed on team success, says Cotner. He was a leader by example, and that s not only true on the golf course but in the classroom. He showed the younger kids the work ethic needed to get their games competitive at the Division I level. Cotner hopes that mentorship rubs deepest on what appears to be a terrific sophomore class. Andrew Cohen, the 2007 Patriot League Andrew Cohen Co-Rookie of the Year, along with Brian Bartow, Jeff Pike and Ryan Schneiter, all made immediate contributions as freshmen last season, and while Cotner is hesitant to dub any of the four the next Waddell, he would not be surprised to see all four in the starting lineup together at some point this year. The sophomore class really has the potential to be the key to our success in winning another Patriot League championship, Cotner offers. As freshmen, they did an outstanding job of following in the footsteps of an outstanding senior class while learning the skills necessary to be strong contributors this year. Cohen emerged as one of the team s top players last spring, after opening the season with an even-par 72 in difficult weather conditions at the George Washington Invitational on the Delaware coast in March. He shot in his first Patriot League Championship, helping the Bison to the team title while finishing in a tie for fourth place individually. Cohen finished off his rookie campaign with a terrific 2-under-par 70 at the NCAA West Regional at Arizona State, giving him a 76.5 scoring average for the year. Bartow also made it through team qualifying to play in the NCAA Regionals, and after a slow start finished with a respectable 72-73, Bucknell s best mark for the final 36 holes. He tied for seventh in the Colgate Invitational in his collegiate debut last September, and his 76.2 overall scoring average was the best of the rookie crop. Pike and Schneiter did not see as much action as Cohen and Bartow, but both finished in the top-15 at the Bucknell Invitational Pike finished with an even-par 70 and flashed a great deal of potential. Andrew s success ultimately proved to be the key to winning the Patriot League title last year, Cotner says. Brian really dedicated himself to getting off on the right foot with his academics and thus was a little slower coming along golf-wise. He has had a really good summer, though, and we are expecting big things from him. Last year was really important for this group to see the level of competition that s out there in Division I. They all became quickly aware of the work they needed to do in order to fine-tune their games to become consistent scorers without so many peaks and valleys. Keita Aoki, Rahul Desai and Stuart Lindgren comprise a senior class that has enjoyed its share of exciting moments over the last three years. All three were in the lineup at the 2007 Patriot League Championship, and Aoki finished tied for sixth to earn All-Patriot League honors for the first time. Of the three seniors, Aoki has played the most throughout his career. He has been a regular starter since the start of his freshman year and has averaged 76.9 or better all three years, including a career-best 75.6 last season. He capped the 2006 fall campaign with his first career victory, winning the Mount St. Mary s Invitational with rounds of in gale-force winds. He was also runner-up at the Colgate Invitational and tied for fourth at the Bucknell Invitational. Desai turned in top-10s at Lehigh (7th) and Lafayette (T-4th) last year, and his opening-round 72 at the Patriot League Championship helped get the Bison going on the right foot. Lindgren posted his first career top-10 at Mount St. Mary s (T-8th) last October. Our success this year will depend on the seniors stepping up and being consistent players, says Cotner. If Keita can focus on just playing golf and posting scores, as opposed to trying to make a perfect golf swing, I can see him being the strong player needed to make statements at tournaments. He has such high standards of perfection when it comes to hitting a golf ball, and he needs to realize that golf is not a game of perfection. Rahul has been a nice addition to our senior class. He came in as a freshman without the competitive experience of our recruited players, and he didn t make the team then. But he made it through qualifying his sophomore year, and during the past two years he has worked very hard on his game, become a consistent ball-striker and has really developed into a tough competitor. Joining the squad this fall are three talented young recruits in Ben Mattingly, Parker Phillips and Andrew Wallish. All three bring impressive credentials at the high school and junior golf levels, now they must adapt to the collegiate setting. Traditionally when freshmen come in, it s an eye-opener, Cotner says. It takes some time to learn how to balance life between academics and golf. We always try to get them to play at least twice in the fall, once at home in our invitational and once on the road. Concepts like how to study on the road, how to play a practice round on a new course and how to adapt to weather changes are important lessons. Despite the loss of a two-time league champion and four-time all-conference performer in Waddell, defending the Patriot League title again and getting back to the NCAAs are certainly chief among Bucknell s goals for We will take time in the fall to get the younger players tournament experience so they are ready to play in the spring championship season, notes Cotner. I really believe we are capable of finishing in the top five in every tournament on the schedule, and I d like to think we can win at least two of them. I d also like to see one or two individual champions. Of course, the ultimate goal is to win the Patriot League and go to the NCAAs. Brian Bartow 8 Bucknell Men s Golf

10 Flashback BISON REPEAT AS PATRIOT LEAGUE CHAMPIONS IN 2007! For the second straight year, the Bison hoisted a championship trophy in Bucknell won three tournaments last season, including a second straight Patriot League title, and advanced to the NCAA Regionals for the second year in a row. Below is a brief tournament-by-tournament recap of the fantastic year. Binghamton shot 300 on Sunday and finished in second place, three strokes behind the Bison. After carding a pair of 73s to open, Waddell and Aoki bettered their first-round scores by one stroke in the final round. The duo finished in second place, two shots behind medalist Dan McCarthy of Le Moyne. Waddell was awarded the runner-up medal on a match of cards. BUCKNELL INVITATIONAL (SEPT ) The Bucknell men s golf team showed off its depth on its home course, as all 10 Bison players shot 77 or better in the final round and Bucknell s two entered teams finished second and third, respectively. The all-underclass team, made of up of junior Keita Aoki and four freshmen, took second place with a 54-hole team score of 874 ( ), 16 shots behind champion Rider. Aoki tied for fourth individually after finishing with a 1-over-par 71. He shot 213 for the tournament ( ). The Blue team s low round was an even-par 70 by Jeff Pike, who debuted Friday with a pair of 76s and wound up in a tie for 13th place. Also, Ryan Schneiter carded a final-round 75, after a opening, and he snuck into the top 10 with a tie for 10th. Charlie Waddell, Bucknell s No. 1 player, led the all-senior contingent with his second straight round in the 60s. On the first day of play Waddell opened with a 76 but rebounded with a career-best-tying 67 in the second round. He then finished with a 1-under 69, and his 54-hole total of 212 was good for his second straight T-2nd finish, one shot behind medalist Tyler Brewington of Rider. Keita Aoki captured his first career victory at the Mount St. Mary s Invitational last fall. KEENAN INVITATIONAL (SEPT ) Charlie Waddell s final-round 72 helped Bucknell to a 299 team score and a ninth-place finish at the Keenan Invitational, hosted by St. Bonaventure at Bartlett Country Club. Waddell s 36-hole total of 148 was good for a tie for 21st place and made him Bucknell s top individual finisher. Keita Aoki shot and finished a shot behind Waddell, tied for 24th overall. Host St. Bonaventure won the team crown for the second straight year. CORNELL INVITATIONAL (SEPT. 30-OCT. 1) Charlie Waddell shot a 2-over-par 74 to finish in fourth place individually, and Bucknell finished up with a 301 team score to place fifth at the Cornell Invitational at Robert Trent Jones GC. Bucknell shot an even 900 for the 54-hole tournament and finished 14 strokes off the winning pace set by Rider. Waddell s showing was good for sole possession of fourth place. MULEKICKER FALL CLASSIC (OCT. 7-8) Charlie Waddell continued the magnificent start to his senior year by winning Army s Mulekicker Fall Classic in a three-hole playoff over Rutgers Seth Hirschhorn. Waddell s 1-over-par 141 helped Bucknell finish in a tie for third place with the host Black Knights in the team standings. Waddell shot 71 in the first round and even-par 70 in the second. The September Patriot League Golfer of the Month had already finished second at both Colgate and Bucknell and fourth at St. Bonaventure. The Bison shot 298 on Sunday, nine strokes better than their first-round total. Keita Aoki was the only other Bucknell player to finish in the top 20 (T-18th). DON MERSHON CLASSIC (OCT ) Charlie Waddell and Rahul Desai both posted top-10 finishes to the lead the Bison to a second-place tie at the Don Mershon Classic, hosted by Lehigh at Indian Valley CC. Led by an even-par 72 from Waddell, Bucknell shot 301 after a first-round 313. The Bison tied with host Lehigh for second place, two shots behind team champion Saint Francis (Pa.). Desai shot and finished alone in seventh place. MOUNT ST. MARY S INVITATIONAL (OCT ) Two days of gale-force winds made scoring extremely difficult at the Mount St. Mary s Invitational, but the Bucknell men s golf team had enough to edge out Fordham and pull out its second victory of the fall season at Quail Valley GC. Keita Aoki was one of only three players in the field to card two rounds in the 70s (75-78), and he captured his first career individual title by two shots over Rob Gallagher of Long Island. Aoki birdied his final two holes of the weekend, which not only helped him win medalist honors but also pulled the Bison back into a first-place tie with Fordham. After shooting 308 in the first round to take a three-shot lead over Fordham, the Bison slipped to a season-worst 330 in the tough conditions on Sunday. The Rams shot 327 to catch Bucknell, but the Bison were declared the winners based on a comparison of No. 5 player scores. Bucknell s fifth score was an 89, while Fordham s was a 92. Charlie Waddell and Stuart Lindgren both finished in a tie for eighth place. Waddell shot 76 in the first round and was 1-under through 10 holes on Sunday, but he ran into trouble on No. 11 and finished with an 83. Lindgren shot GEORGE WASHINGTON INVITATIONAL (MARCH 24-25) Bucknell struggled in the closing round of the George Washington Invitational at Bear Trap Dunes in Bethany Beach, Del., managing only one score in the 70s en route to a team total of 320. Chas Wagner shot a team-best 78 as the Bison finished in 19th place in a 24-team field. Penn shot 299 in the final round and 585 overall to win the tournament by three shots over Longwood. WILLIAM & MARY INVITATIONAL (MARCH 26-27) Playing the famed River Course at Kingsmill Resort, the Bucknell golf squad shot 305 to finish in 18th place at the William & Mary Invitational. Senior Charlie Waddell bounced back from an opening-round 79 to shoot a 2-over-par 73 in the final round to lead the team. 18 Hall of Fame BUCKNELL GOLF WELL-REPRESENTED IN ATHLETICS HALL OF FAME The Bucknell Athletics Hall of Fame was established in 1979 to honor the very best in the history of Bison Athletics. There are now 199 outstanding student-athletes, administrators, coaches and friends of Bucknell whose contributions to Bucknell Athletics are forever preserved in the Hall of Fame, including the five men listed below who were associated with the golf program. HAROLD EVANS CHICK WAGNER BOB ETZWEILER No man played a larger role in solidifying Bucknell s golf program than Harold Evans, who served the university for more than 70 years until his passing in Evans came to Bucknell as caddie master in 1931 and Harold Evans took over as head professional in After organizing the school s club golf team, he became the Bison s first intercollegiate golf coach in He won a schoolrecord 144 dual matches during his nearly quartercentury tenure as head coach and was inducted into the Bucknell Athletics Hall of Fame in Evans led the Bison to five Middle Atlantic Conference championships from , and helped two of those teams to the NCAA Tournament. The beauty of the Bucknell University Golf Club is a tribute to Evans and his wife, Mary Louise, who planted countless trees and flowers and shaped the appearance of the course through the years, including the expansion from 9 to 18 holes in A Bucknellian in the truest sense of the award, Tommy Thompson spent 44 years as either a player, assistant coach or head coach at Bucknell. A three-year starter in baseball and basketball and captain of both teams, Thompson served Tommy Thompson in the U.S. Army, pitched in the Detroit Tigers system and coached baseball, basketball, golf and tennis teams at Bucknell until retiring in He amassed more than 1,000 victories as a Bison player and coach. He was team captain of the basketball team and led the team in scoring as a senior at 16.3 points per game. Also a star on the baseball diamond, Thompson was named the outstanding athlete in the Class of From he was head baseball coach, and he helped author one of the greatest turnarounds in Bucknell history in any sport, taking the Bison nine from an 0-15 record in 1968 to a 15-4 mark and a Middle Atlantic Conference title in He took over as head golf coach in 1981 and directed the Bison to an impressive dualmatch record, to go along with seven tournament titles. He was named Patriot League Coach of the Year in Thompson was inducted into the Bucknell Athletics Hall of Fame in Chick Wagner, a 1984 Bucknell Athletics Hall of Fame Inductee, played in the 1975 and 1976 NCAA Golf Championships and was winner of the 1975 ECAC Fall Championship. Co-captain of the 1975 and 1976 Bucknell teams, Wagner Chick Wagner helped lead the Bison to the 1973 Middle Atlantic Conference championship and to second place in the 1974 Eastern Championship. He was on the Bucknell team that traveled to Scotland in 1973 for the St. Andrews International Intercollegiate Championship. A member of teams that had a combined record in dual matches, Wagner set a school and Bucknell Golf Club competitive course record with a round of 66 in 1975, and he set Bucknell scoring records with a 73.8 season average (1975) and 76.4 career average. The recipient of the Edward W. Pangburn Award, he finished in the top 10 in the conference championship tournament three times and was twice in the top 10 in the Eastern Championship. He was the 1983 champion of Oakmont Country Club. A 2000 Bucknell Athletics Hall of Fame inductee, Brad Tufts served the Bucknell athletic department for over 30 years as either coach or administrator. He was the men s golf coach from and led Brad Tufts his teams to Middle Atlantic Conference championships in 1967 and His men s teams posted an impressive dual-match record. Tufts became the firstever coach of the Bucknell women s golf program in 1998 and retired from coaching, and Bucknell, following the 2000 spring season. He served in various administrative roles, including sports information director, associate director of public relations, director of information services, assistant and associate director of athletics and interim director of athletics. Tufts received the Lester Jordan Award from the College Sports Information Directors of America in He is also the 1989 recipient of ECAC-SIDA s Irving T. Marsh Award and the 2001 recipient of ECAC-SIDA s Bob Kenworthy Good Person Award. Bob Etzweiler is still remembered as one of Bucknell s top golfers, and he occupied the No. 1 or 2 position on Bison squads that captured three straight Middle Atlantic Conference championships. Etzweiler won the MAC individual title in 1959, tied for Bob Etzweiler second in 1960 and placed fifth in He qualified for the NCAA Championship during his senior campaign and became one of only five eastern players to qualify for the match-play field of 64. The York, Pa., native was also selected to play in the East-West Match at that tournament. In an era when virtually all of the competition was in match-play format, Etzweiler had a career dualmatch record of and was against MAC opponents. He helped lead Bucknell to a 25-9 record during his career, including a school-record 10-2 record in Etzweiler, who in 2003 became just the second golfer to be inducted into the Bucknell Athletics Hall of Fame, later won numerous amateur titles in the York area. TOMMY THOMPSON BRAD TUFTS CHARLIE WADDELL He will not be eligible for the Bucknell Athletics Hall of Fame until 2017, but Charlie Waddell is a good bet to one day join these elite ranks. A 2007 graduate, Waddell is arguably the finest Charlie Waddell golfer in Bucknell annals. He won Patriot League championships in 2005 and 2006, making him the only player in league history to win the league title twice. He also finished sixth in 2004 and third in 2007, giving him four All-PL plaques. Waddell won four career tournaments and helped Bucknell to back-to-back Patriot League team championships in 2006 and 2007, leading to NCAA Regional berths both years. The school record-holder for season (73.5) and career (74.9) scoring average, Waddell was also an outstanding student at Bucknell. He was an ESPN the Magazine Academic All-District selection and was a nominee for the Byron Nelson Award, presented to the top golfer in the nation who also demonstrates good sportsmanship and citizenship Presidents Cups Two Consecutive Patriot League Golf Championships

The 18-hole course is complemented by a full-service restaurant and well-stocked pro shop, managed by veteran PGA Class A Professional Brian Kelly. The BGC also features a large practice range with both grass and artificial stalls, two large practice greens and additional short-game areas, including a practice bunker. The original nine holes were built in 1930 and designed by renowned course architect Emil Loeffler, who was the greens superintendent and architect of the famed Oakmont Country Club near Pittsburgh. Loeffler s original nine was altered in 1947, and the course was expanded to 18 holes in Course architect Edward Ault of Silver Springs, Md., was hired to supervise the expansion. The course plays to a par 70 and is measured at 6,400 yards from the back of the championship tees. Despite the relative lack of length compared to many modern golf courses, the Bucknell layout presents a stern challenge to golfers of all abilities, playing to a rating of 70.0 and slope of 132 from the blue (back) tees. The club has hosted numerous U.S. Open local qualifiers and annually hosts the North Central Pennsylvania Golf Association s Men s and Women s Amateur Championship. It is also in the regular rotation to host the Patriot League Championship, and has done so in 1994, 2000, 2005 and No. 3: a tough 209-yard, par-3 The signature par-5 9th requires an approach over a large pond The par-3 13th The BGC s historic clubhouse Postcard-size greens at No and No. 11 A pretty walk home from the 18th A view from the tee at the tough 5th BGC s cart garage/picnic pavilion The beautifully landscaped elevated tee box at No Bucknell Men s Golf

20 Athletics Facilities Sojka Pavilion Kinney Natatorium Krebs Fitness Center Gerhard Fieldhouse West Fields Phase III Varsity Softball Field Davis Gym Christy Mathewson-Memorial Stadium Varsity Tennis Courts KENNETH LANGONE ATHLETICS & RECREATION CENTER The Bucknell University Department of Athlet ics and Recreation prides itself on setting the standard of excellence when it comes to success both on the playing fields and in the classroom. With 13 Patriot League Presidents Cups in 17 years, national leadership in graduation rates, 114 Academic All-Americans in 37 years and 108 Patriot League Scholar-Athletes in 17 years, Bucknell is clearly at the head of the class in terms of upholding the scholar-athlete model. The addition of the Kenneth G. Langone Athletics and Recreation Center, one of the finest collegiate athletics and recreation venues of its kind, ensures the continuation of that success. The facility enhances each of Bucknell s 27 varsity programs and greatly expands the scope of its growing intramural and recreational sports offerings. A visually appealing structure located along Moore Avenue on the downhill side of campus, the Langone Athletics and Recreation Center was designed to reach out to all members of the campus community, including the student body, varsity student-athletes, faculty, staff and alumni. Three primary venues lie within the facility: the Arthur D. Kinney Jr. Natatorium, the 4,000-seat Gary A. Sojka Pavilion and the Krebs Family Fitness Center. Other features include a new location for the Bucknell Athletics Hall of Fame, a display of Bucknell s Congressional Medal of Honor recipients, a brand new display highlighting Bucknell s all-time Academic All-Americans, a sports medicine and athletic training suite, classrooms, modern offices for coaches and staff and increased locker room space for varsity and recreational athletes. The facility is named in honor of Ken Langone, a 1957 Bucknell graduate who, along with his wife Elaine, pledged $11 million toward the center s construction. Langone was a member of the university Board of Trustees from 1980 to One of the special qualities of the Langone Athletics and Recreation Center is the manner in which it supplements the pre-existing facilities. The construction surrounds Gerhard Fieldhouse and historic Davis Gymnasium, which has been restored as a competition venue for the Bison wrestling and volleyball teams, as well as intramural, recreation and other varsity practice activities. As Bucknell continues to strive toward its mission of setting the standard of excellence in college athletics, the Langone Athletics and Recreation Center becomes the centerpiece in an already impressive cache of athletics facilities that includes the 13,100-seat Christy Mathewson-Memorial Stadium and its newly installed FieldTurf and 8-lane track surface; the scenic Bucknell Golf Club; Depew Field, the home of the Bison baseball team; the spacious West Fields for softball, Varsity Soccer Field and Graham Field, including the new Phase III portion of the West Fields project that includes covered grandstand seats, ticket and concession areas, team rooms, a training room and a press box area for soccer, field hockey and women s lacrosse. 13 Presidents Cups Two Consecutive Patriot League Golf Championships 19

21 Bison Golf 114 Academic All-Americans Perennial Leader in Graduation Rates BISON GOLF: LEADERS ON THE COURSE AND IN THE CLASSROOM Bucknell athletics teams are well-known for their prowess both on the playing fields and in the classroom. The Bison men s golf team is no exception. In fact, Jim Cotner s crew had an stellar combined grade-point average of 3.42 in the spring 2007 semester, one of the highest of any of Bucknell s 27 teams. The following Bison men s golfers eight of the 13 members of the Patriot League championship team achieved a 3.2 GPA last spring and earned a spot on the Patriot League Academic Honor Roll. In compiling a collegiate ranking system intended to be used as a guide for junior players, Golf Digest rated each school in five categories: academics, climate, coach/facilities, team scoring average and player growth. The editors used academic statistics from U.S. News & World DID YOU KNOW? Half of the classes at Bucknell have 17 students or fewer. All classes are taught by professors, not graduate assistants. Student-Faculty ratio is 11:1. Bucknell s 94% retention rate and 89% graduation rate are among the highest in the nation. Bucknell students annually receive $33 million in institutional financial aid. Report s 2007 guidebook, America s Best Colleges, and golf scoring data from golfstat.com. To assist prep golfers who may have different educational priorities, the magazine created three categories of rankings: Golf First, Academics First, and Balanced. In each category, Golf Digest weighted the values of the five ratings to correspond with what student-golfers are looking for. Both of Bucknell s teams received top-40 rankings in the Academics First category. The Bison women s squad, a member of the Big South Conference under head coach Kevin Jamieson, was ranked 31st nationally, the highest in the conference. Coach Jim Cotner s men s team, the Patriot League champion in both 2006 and 2007, was ranked 36th, also tops in the league. Both teams rankings improved from In the Balanced category, both Bucknell teams also fared well in the rankings. The Bison women were listed 59th, while the men were 63rd. In its second decade of combining academic and athletic excellence, the Patriot League sponsors championships in 23 men and women s sports. Initially started as an NCAA Division I-AA football conference in 1986, the Patriot League became an all-sport conference in 1990 and includes American, Army, Bucknell, Colgate, Holy Cross, Lafayette, Lehigh and Navy as full members, and Fordham and Georgetown as associate members. These institutions are among the oldest and most prestigious in the nation and their alumni have, and continue to play leadership roles in shaping our country. Since 1998, the Patriot League has ranked first each year among all Division I conferences awarding athletic aid in the NCAA Graduation Rate Report. In addition, the Patriot League finished first in the new NCAA Academic Progress Report (APR) among all Division I conferences awarding athletic aid (combining with all eight of its full-time member institutions for an average of 984 out of 1,000). The APR is used to measure academic eligibility, retention and graduation of student-athletes. Patriot League student-athletes and teams continue to enjoy success at the national level, with opening round victories coming in several NCAA Championships, including consecutive wins in men s basketball, a final four appearance in men s lacrosse and a sixth-place finish at the NCAA Cross Country Championship. The Patriot League s mission is simple, to provide successful competitive athletic experiences while maintaining high academic standards, and to prepare its student-athletes to be leaders in society. THE PLAN FOR BUCKNELL Bucknell is a unique national university where liberal arts and professional programs complement each other, where 3,350 full-time students are educated for a lifetime of critical thinking and strong leadership. The Plan for Bucknell was unanimously approved by the Board of Trustees on April 29, 2006, having previously been approved by the students and faculty. We have begun implementing it and are determined to make it a reality over the next decade.
