1 VetsNews October 2016 Finally, another issue of VetsNews. After my promises to communicate with you every three months I must once again apologise has been a very busy and exciting time in the VWGA office with two new committee persons, Vana and Lilian volunteering their time to help us out. This year I abandoned the Match Committee as it had achieved its aim and Jacky Parsons took on the role of Head of Tournaments. The focus in 2016 has been on revamping our tournament schedule, utilising technology and spreading the expertise on our committee to manage individual tournaments from go to whoa! In my last newsletter I mentioned utilising our new addresses at.org.au - membership@vwgansw.org.au, accounts@vwgansw.org.au, secretary@vwgansw.org.au. Whilst these are still online our BigPond addresses remain active whilst Telstra is converting from BigPond to their new TelstraMail service. Once our BigPond migration has occurred successfully we will revise our situation. Currently you are able to contact us through any of the addresses. Good news, finally the new box tournaments.vwga@bigpond.com has been activated. This gives you a direct link with Jacky Parsons, and should be used for all tournament matters. A farewell luncheon was held for Pat Ellis last Wednesday. Whilst she will always be our life member, she has not nominated to the committee in 2017 (since she was coopted 1988) due to the tyranny of distance. Pat looked radiant and has settled into her new home at Tewantin, Qld to be close to her family and especially her new greatgranddaughter. If you have a spare moment, she would love to catch up on the news by on patce1959@hotmail.com. The final tournament for 2016 will be held at Kooindah Waters (Wyong) on 21 st November 2016 (not 28/11/2016) The event is the President v Secretary Cup and will be played as a 4 person team stableford with 2 scores to count. Entry fee is $55.00 and includes a shared golf cart and a lunch box. Shotgun start at 8.30am. Jenni has arranged an accommodation package for Sunday night (20/11) and accommodation details and the entry form are available on our website at: This is a new initiative and is the first time we have held a one-day tournament on the Central Coast. We hope you can join us and celebrate the end of 2016! Annual General Meeting: Friday 11 th November, am The Agenda paper, amended minutes of the 2015 AGM, financial report and proxy form were bulk mailed to all delegates last Monday 17/11/2015. If you have not received your copy please contact us immediately. Unfortunately, an error has occurred in the writing of the notice of motion (item 10) relating to the fee increase from $3.00-$5.00. The effective date should be 1 January 2018 not 1 January 2017 (as stated). An amendment will be put to the meeting to rectify the date of implementation. Consequently, it is not necessary for you to collect the additional amount until membership fees are due for I apologise for the confusion that this error has generated. Name Badges: A new style of new name badge was introduced mid-year and we have received many positive comments on the new design. In order to minimise delivery costs we are only placing an order after 10 individual name badge requests are received. Cost has been maintained at $18.00 and the supplier has agreed to a week s turn-around
2 in delivery. However, if your members are not happy with the new style we will happily refund the purchase price. Merchandise: Our website now has an interactive site for the purchase of merchandise. Orders are able to be placed online and the purchase notification is generated to the Treasurer. Once the EFT has been received your order will be despatched within a few days. Check it out at: for your trophies, gifts etc year badges: Our wonderful octogenarian numbers continue to increase and with the majority of ladies still playing golf on a regular basis we decided to revamp the 80 year award. The old brooch has been replaced by a new design that can be used as a ball marker on a hat hat/visor clip. We hope that this is now a more contemporary and useful award. Indeed, Liz Ralston (Wakehurst) attributed her wonderful score of 44 points in September to her new badge! Well done Liz! RESULTS: Due to the lateness of this issue and limited space available for summation, our 2016 tournament reports and results are available on our website at: and In 2017, I intend to send the tournament reports to delegates with a registered address on a monthly basis. These can either be downloaded and placed on your notice board or distributed by to your members or simply ignored! If we don t have an address registered (i.e. you have received this by snail mail) please advise ASAP if you wish to receive regular updates. 3 VALE: It is with regret that I report on the passing of a number of our members who have gone to golfing heaven. I extend our sympathies to the families, friends and golfing associates. Edith (Billie) Dennis (Coolamon): Billie left us on 11 March, aged 91 years and 8 months. She joined as a veteran in 1982 and remained a financial member until 2015 when she could no longer play 9 holes. Esme Hewitt (Singleton): Esme passed away on 15 May 2016 at the age of 84 years. She was a patroness of Singleton Ladies, played beautiful golf and always remained a true lady with a great sense of humour. Julie O Keefe (Wagga City): Julie went to golfing heaven on 29 th May. She was the Vets Delegate for 10 years from 2002 to 2012 and was responsible for a very successful VWGA country tournament in Alma (Ann) Mackay (Coonamble): Ann passed away in August. She was much loved member was on the committee and was always keen to keep out. All these ladies were loved at their respective clubs and will be sorely missed! CELEBRATION: Age is not slowing down Tamworth golfers Dulcie Newling (83) and Kath Donoghue (89) who finished 3 rd in the Foursomes Championship nett event only 5 shots behind the winning pair of Julie Nichols and Natalie Studte. What a wonderful achievement as Dulcie plays off a handicap of 45 and Kath 35, the winners are both of 7. Well done ladies! Wilma Artery (Oberon) was the Division 2 winner of the Mabel Mackenzie brooch in Wilma had a fabulous score of minus 8 to win on a count back. However, the win was a complete surprise. An afternoon tea was held to celebrate Wilma s success. The Mabel Mackenzie brooch is restricted to Country clubs and is competed for in April/May each year. Lapel pins are awarded to the five divisional winners in each club i.e. division 1, 2, 3, weekend and senior veteran. Following discussion at last year s AGM, a decision was made to cancel the 14 regional awards in the Mabel Mackenzie brooch competition from A silver teaspoon was awarded historically, but in recent years was replaced by a $10.00 voucher. The committee is seeking feedback `if the cancellation of the regional award had an impact on country areas for referral and discussion at the 2016 AGM. Please me your concerns at: vwgansw@bigpond.com. CONGRATULATIONS: Judy Finkle Judy is once again the 2016 Club Champion at Cootamundra for a remarkable 25 th time. Her winning margin this year was a massive 22 strokes. She has also been crowned Club Foursomes Champion 21 times. Judy is a very proud member of the Inter-Association (South West versus Riverina) team since She has served for many years on the Cootamundra ladies committee and on the South West Ladies Golf Association, where she is currently Treasurer. Judy has also been the Vets Delegate Page 3
4 for over 20 years. She has reduced her handicap from 10.6 (March) and currently plays off of 6.8. What a tremendous achievement Judy you are truly inspiration! I might get to play with the champ at the Cootamundra 2-day tournament in 2018! Hope so! FOOD FOR THOUGHT: In our last VetsNews Maggie Simmons (Delegate, Gerringong) queried whether Jean Attenborough had created a record - years versus playing golf on a regular basis. I m delighted that I ve had a number of responses! Muriel Wills (Cronulla): 93 years of age and still playing competition golf twice a week. Muriel joined Cronulla in 1963 and is always involved in what s happening at the club. She has represented Cronulla for over 50 years at the annual Ashes competition against Port Kembla. Muriel has won many events over the years Grade, Silver, Bronze 1 pennants, Bronze Medallion, and the State Bronze Foursomes with her partner Ena Fletcher. She achieved a handicap of 17 and today plays off 34. In 2015 she won the Challenge Brooch for her division at Cronulla. Muriel is unstoppable! She is an inspiration to all of the Cronulla members and whilst she is forced to ride in a cart these days (due to a knee injury), if bad weather prevails and no carts are allowed Muriel will walk the course with determination members think twice about cancelling whilst Muriel soldiers on! Pam Rigg, (Delegate, Harrington Waters) reported that the Club had successfully hosted the inaugural Australian OBE Golf Championships in April The competition included 3 x 9 hole competitions over three days and the players commented they had never been so pampered on a golf course with caddies and bunker rakers organised for all groups from club volunteers. Over Blxxdy Eighty (OBE) attracted competitors from as far away as Cobram Barooga (on the Victorian Border) with a wide range of handicaps. All competitors vowed that God willing they will return in 2017 and will have many friends in tow. The Ladies Scratch Champion with 19 points was Betty Andrews (Kew) and the Ladies Handicap winner with 42 points was Harrington local, Joan Fleming. DELEGATES PACKS: Delegate packs have been mailed to newly appointed delegates (on receipt of a change of delegate advice form) over the past months. From feedback, the delegates are delighted with the information contained as it answers many a question but will require restocking with 2017 information. It is intended that the packs will be handed over when a new delegate is appointed. I d love to hear from you the newsletter is only as good as the information I receive. I am available at any time via lynwalker2@hotmail.com or via my mobile Cheers until next time hopefully sooner and with no more apologies! Page 4
