However it was very disappointing to be advised that some competitors hit quite a number of balls to the 8 th and 18 th greens, didn t repair their divots nor their pitch marks.. how inconsiderate!! Be aware (to protect the course) there are published conditions for practice on the course in the Program Book and they include maximum of 2 balls can be played Please be aware of these conditions, and don t risk disqualification. 3 FROM THE WOMEN Thank you to all the wonderfully generous members and businesses who donated to our raffle for Charity Day which this year supported Legacy. Congratulations to Marg O Connell for all her work on the raffle and to all committee for bringing the day together. Michael gave us an awesome driving display on the 18 th to enable some good scoring there. Also to the 100 players and visitors who supported the day by participating in all that was on offer - we thank you. A reminder that the Club s Annual General Meeting is on next Thursday October 27 at 7:30pm. Voting closes for Board election on Saturday October 22 at 5pm. Voting on the Life Membership nominees takes place at this meeting. Please take the time to read the information within the clubhouse at the voting table. The Women s Annual General Meeting and Presentation of Awards is on Thursday November 10 at 2pm in the Clubhouse. Jenni Brown and Tanya Heber have been entered to play the NSW Women s Foursomes as our reigning Club Champions. This makes them eligible to compete for the Champion of Champions trophy. They play at Campbelltown on Sunday November 6. Our final group in the Swingers Programme for 2016 have commenced their clinics with Michael. Great work done by Pam and all her helping hands to keep this working so well. As a courtesy to fellow players please do not use batteries or buggies other than your own. Difficult this week for one of our ladies who came for a social hit only to find her battery missing. It was returned after the round. Meantime she used a pull buggy. She is one of our more senior members. He played a provisional ball from the tee; it ended about 5 cm from the hole. He said, "my first ball is lost", and walked past the deep rough. As they walked towards the green, Jeremy, a fellow competitor, delved into the rough and within five minutes had found Alastair's original ball. Which of the following applies? a. Alastair has declared his ball lost so may abandon the original ball without searching and play out the hole with the provisional ball. b. Since his original ball has been found within 5 minutes, it is not lost, so he must abandon the provisional ball and continue play of the hole with the original ball. c. Alastair may now declare his original ball unplayable and use the provisional as his ball played under stroke and distance under Rule 28a for a ball unplayable. 5 FROM THE ARCHIVES At this year s Club AGM, two long-standing members of our club, who are so very worthy are being considered for Life Membership. I would like to ask the question, is it too late to nominate a past President for such an honour even though he died seventy-one years ago? Having received, 300 odd pages of correspondence from the National Archives which includes minutes, maps, diagrams and accounts relating to the Army s use of Long Reef golf Club during WW11, we have clear evidence of just how the then President led a committee, in his words, of old men, to save the golf Course from closure. He worked without a Club Secretary as he had been called-up for war duties. Arthur William Sneddon was the Club s President from 1940 to He wrote letters, and reports consistently, putting across the club s plight and also arranging meetings at the Barracks and inspections of the course. His letters were of polite persistence, business-like detail, yet with a full appreciation that the world and the army had much bigger problems to deal with. He communicated with Victoria and Roseville Barracks, The Lands Department, the Council and the Course Designer Mr E.L. Apperly. This correspondence commenced in 1941 and the gesture and offer of financial compensation by the army was finally settled in early 1946, allowing the club to start rebuilding the course. (The extent of the damage caused by the war and the army, from a sand invasion of up to 15 feet deep, to holes made by mortar shells will be explained at a later date.) The record of the achievements of all Life Members gives us a variety of criteria for the nomination. The Captain of the time V.S. Slocombe became a Life Member in So why not the President? In the end the answer was quite simple to find, when looking at the 1940 s membership book. He died while still 'in office in November 1945, having been elected as President again for the year. The new Captain V.K. Lloyd took over the role, along with his own until the next AGM. It is Lloyd s signature that is on the letter of acceptance for the compensation cheque. At least we have a framed photo of A.W. Sneddon, which is on display in the Members Bar at the moment. Sandra Mellowes Thanks to Joy Reece for her research and contact with the National Archives FROM THE JUNIORS ENCOURAGE SHIELD Week 2 saw the team head up the beaches to take on The Coast at Bayview. It was a difficult day for the boys playing off the blue tees and, with the course not ideally set up for kids to play match play, all the teams found it a challenging experience at times. The final score on the day was a 3-3 draw with wins to Sam, Tully and Chunta. Sam won his game very easily in the end with his opponent giving up when Sam went a few holes ahead. Tully ended his match on the 18th, after being ahead early he let his lead slip but came back when it mattered. Chunta, playing his first ever match, played some good golf to wear his opponent down to win on the 14th green. The other three games could have gone Long Reef's way but the boys couldn't finish them off. Jack playing his first ever match was behind early and kept himself in the game winning holes when it counted but just missed out. Luke played great golf tee to green but just couldn't get his putts to drop. Cian played well losing holes with pars as he had to give his opponent plenty of shots. Once again a big thank you to Les Browne and Mick Snell for walking around with the team offering their encouragement and support. This week we head out to Oatlands to take on the home team. Paul Hughes Team Manager

6 ANNUAL GENERAL MEETING FROM THE COURSE The Annual General Meeting of the Long Reef Golf Club will take place on Thursday 27 th October at 7.30pm. Due to the continuous strong winds we have been unable to get many planned jobs done. This week is the first week since renovations we have been able to dust the greens with sand to help fill the core holes and smooth the surface. Hopefully we get some regular rain and the wind settles down before the weather gets hot. It is very disappointing for the green staff to see a few selfish members damaging areas around greens, leaving dozens of pitch marks and trashing bunkers, practising for the championships. I hope the members who take rows of divots out of green surrounds and leave chunks of grass all over the greens after practising their chip shots are happy with themselves. They then leave all the damage for us to fix with no regard for anyone. I hope these members are not the ones that whinge when the greens are bumpy or they miss their putt; like I said very disappointing for us. ANSWER: b is correct. A ball is not lost simply because a player declares it to be lost...definition of Lost Ball. It is clear that Alastair saw an advantage in not finding his original ball, but because his ball has been found within 5 minutes he must continue play with the original. Realising the problems in the deep rough, where it may be impossible to play a ball dropped under the provisions of Rule 28b. or 28c, if he declares the original unplayable, he must return to the tee and play his third stroke, abandoning the provisional ball. A provisional ball may not be played in case a ball may be unplayable. A ball may only be played provisionally if a ball may be lost outside a water hazard, or may be out of bounds...rule 27-2.
